While this may not be universally accepted by all, can and should the private sector tourism industry do more to help itself? The simple answer must be yes!

I firmly believe there are so many more ways that we can build smart partnerships to build our destination awareness in all the key markets. As an example, many years ago we persuaded the three largest villa rental agencies to jointly produce a full page ‘ad’ that appeared in leading travel magazines like Caribbean Travel and Life. By collectively sharing the costs they were able to attract an audience that would have been price inhibitive if attempted individually.

As first you may think that you were collaborating with the ‘enemy’ and handing valuable business to your competition, but in today’s reality the consumer is savvy and well informed. They can make a defined choice based on their own preferences. There would be nothing stopping our car rental agencies, major attractions and small hotels doing exactly the same and ideally, in one concerted effort, together.

The re-organisation of what was the Barbados Tourism Authority has presented the commercially driven tourism partners with an opportunity that must not be squandered. Yes! We are all aware of the financial contraints but there is no much more that can be done nowadays with the Internet without spending small fortunes.

Certainly at the recently held Connect 2014 tour operator’s event I left with the feeling that both the private and public sector interests were reaching out with renewed enthusiasm, while actively looking for improved communication channels and ways of co-operating. Perhaps the new Delta flights from Atlanta and New York could be the catalyst for some creative way of joint advertising. Generate interest in the destination and then present multi options of accommodation choices and ancillary services.

Atlanta especially excites me, with a population of six million living within an hour’s drive of Hartsfield Airport (ATL). Having spent a week driving around the city and its suburbs some years ago the overall demographics look tempting. One concern is the current high airfares at around US$700 economy return. The inconsistencies of the airline business is that fares to Barbados from Atlanta routed via Toronto are presently almost US$250 cheaper. To ensure the route is sustainable that will have to change if we are going to maintain the service.

Through a website called Airfarewatchdog.com, it’s easy to monitor all the ticket prices to other Caribbean islands and it would be foolhardy not to take into account that our potential visitors are doing this as well.

I also wonder after the 49 per cent acquisition of Virgin Atlantic by Delta whether there is an opportunity to offer triangle fares London-Atlanta-Barbados-London. Two or multi destination holidays have long been popular, especially among independent travellers and there clearly is a market, citing Florida as a proven example.

With less than three months before the flights recommence, there is certainly a lot of work to do. Let us hopefully make it happen together.

  10. Well said @BOOKWORM, well said.

  11. For many tourists Barbados is a 3 star destination with 5 star prices. That is the big issue. Delta at $700 is aimed at returning Nationals and not the average tourist. If you want to fill some hotels, put a package together with someone like Allegiant or Spirit airlines and get a 7 night stay put together at $1200-$1300 and we will see results. It is all about the internet and shopping competitive prices. Times haves changed. Keep in mind any airplanes flying from the USA have lots of warm destinations so much closer to the North American continent than Barbados is.

    Pitcher: Avoid LIAT
    SANKA PRICE
    September 12, 2014

    BOYCOTT LIAT FOR a day.

That’s what publisher Robert Pitcher is calling on the regional public to do to send a clear message to the airline that they are fed up with its high airfares and poor quality service.

He also advised the regional governments looking to invest in the island hopping airline to keep it afloat not to put a cent into it until it changes its board, which he contends, is not suited to oversee the affairs of running a modern airline.

Instead, a group of successful Caribbean businessmen from the separate territories should be appointed to the board with a Caribbean chief executive officer at the helm who understands the market.

Speaking at a press conference at his Rendezvous Gardens, Christ Church offices this morning, Pitcher a director of Fun N’ Sun publishing, also took issue with the announcement that LIAT would be flying to Haiti four times weekly from December.

Pitcher said presently the airline cannot even service their existing routes efficiently and this move would be to a country where loads would be doubtful, similar to the unsuccessful route to the Dominican Republic.

He charged this decision was more ludicrous given the financial crisis the airline was in. He said the situation was so serious that staff received an email recently telling them they would not be paid on the 15th of the month as scheduled, but on the 22nd instead.

The publishing executive said the airline should be concentrating on turning around its fortunes given the $100 million loan and purchase of new aircrafts it recently received.

They can do this, he suggested, by reducing airfares to the various destinations and filling seats, rather than keeping prices high or increasing them which has led to less people travelling.

Pitcher called on Barbados to allow Antigua to take over the majority shareholding in LIAT as they have excessive staff there which they are refusing to cut, and the airline is based there as well.

He said it was not fair to Barbadian taxpayers to be footing the largest bill in LIAT but yet the prices are so high to travel to different regional destinations that people travel to Miami or New York instead.

Pitcher said, too, if it was not for the United States embassy which processes visas for the people in the Eastern Caribbean being based here, then Barbados would not receive such high numbers of regional visitors.

The 74-year-old executive also called on Prime Minister Freundel Stuart to report to the Barbadian public on the discussions about LIAT at the last Heads of Government CARICOM summit.

He said it was time for a frank discussion and assessment on LIAT and how much it is cost Barbadian taxpayers.

“For many tourists Barbados is a 3 star destination with 5 star prices. That is the big issue.”
If you can see it and I can see it then why can hotel owners not see it?
The hotels that are full and doing well have tailored their prices and packages accordingly.
There are too many hotels trying to live off a long devalued “Barbados” myth.

    @ David [BU]

I had noted that too “Richard Sealy wins the CTO Chairmanship ”

Maybe the requirements of that post will so engage him outside of the cuntry that he will not be here to f up our tourism product more than he has done these last six years

Does anyone have any statistics on the throughput and increase in the number of tourists at CTO level that might be directly related to the 2year tenure of Chair and CEO who is also selected from the member cuntry of the Chairman?

It is so lamentable that white Bajan business select their CEOs based on their performance during their tenure (and fire them in a heartbeat if they don’t perform see Cave Shepherd, Williams Industries etc. yet black enterprise does so based on ensuring that they are incompetents and fellow lackeys who run the enterprise into the ground. I wonder what the statistics were for the past CTO chair lady from the USVI ?
