“Free at last, Free at last, Thank God almighty we are free at last!” (Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.)

The GTUC shares with the world and more so Guyanese the celebration of 1st August which 180th years ago brought an end to chattel slavery in the British Empire. Full emancipation came four years later after the slaves served a four-year period of amelioration (1838). Freedom in its present form is a continuous process of education, putting in place systems, and safeguarding same in order that people and society can be rid of the shackles of that era in whatever form it appears today. One does not have to be physically enchained to be mentally enslaved. The mind is a powerful tool and weapon and when it remains shackled to messages of non-achievements, worthlessness and inferiority, there is no need for physical chains to enslave, oppress and marginalise.

Our African ancestors were brought to the so-called New World against their wishes and through sweat, blood and tears-despite the whips reigning down on their bodies- they contributed significantly in laying the foundation and topography for this land. They built a system of dikes and drainage canals, seawalls and roads network, constructed buildings and factories, laboured in the sugar and cotton estates, planted rice, fruits, ground provisions and other crops with their hands.

Our forebears fought against the oppressive system, with some giving their lives for the cause that led to chattel freedom, indentureship, internal self-government, independence and republican status. It is because of them we have a constitution of our own and laws to protect us from marginalisation and discrimination from any individual, group or system. They have fought the good fight for equality and dignity grounded in the belief that all men and women are capable of acting toward each other in a spirit of brotherhood and sisterhood. This ideal was institutionalised in the 1948 United Nations Human Rights Declaration.

In as much as there were exploitations and their labour was unpaid and undervalued, immediately after emancipation they set about ensuring a society that will have their meaningful participation. Through the cooperative economic model they pooled their moneys and bought villages that started the Village Movement and development of their communities, a system of local self-government, education, health and business ventures, coupled with the values for discipline and family structure with the needed mix of religion and entertainment. The African proverb, “It takes a village to raise a child” was not only exemplified in the biological extended family but in the wider community, including the school, church and even on the streets. These foundations are still relevant today.

Even as society becomes more complex these values must not be lost on us. For it is out of and through them the sense of belongingness and fairness are shaped. As Guyanese, irrespective of our racial identity, association, sex, class or other experiences, the foundations laid by others are what we today walk on and must build on. Given that this nation has travelled the path of resistance against domination and oppression- through its various forms- it behoves us today as we commemorate another year of chattel freedom to rise up and re-commit to continue the journey started by our forebears for our inalienable right to equality and dignity.

1834 (Amelioration), 1838 (Emancipation) , 1905 (trade unionism), 1917 (end to indentureship), 1947 (universal adult suffrage), 1953 (internal self-government), 1966 (Independence) and 1970 (Republican status) are significant dates in this nation’s calendar, but these achievements can only have meaning when we not only work to deepen and strengthen the march for freedom, but we also resist the efforts and actions, in whatever form they appear, of those who seek to undermine and undo these achievements.

Less we forget, freedom is not free; it requires eternal; vigilance, struggles and sacrifices to protect what have been achieved and ensure the enabling environment to realise civil, social, economic, cultural and political equality and dignity. Only then as a people all voices can truly ring out, “Free at last, Free at last, Thank God almighty we are free at last!” (Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.) The work began in 1834. It is not yet completed. But the dream still liveth and the hope must never die! There is still work to be done and as brave warriors we must put our shoulders to the wheel and march on….!

  1. Happy Emancipation Day Barbados, we have come a long away but the journey will be long to true emancipation.

  2. I wish all my brothers and sisters in Barbados a very HAPPY & PROSPEROUS EMANCIPATION DAY.

Only yesterday a friend of mine for over 40 years had a conversation in regards to Jamaica, Barbados, and all the other islands in the Caribbean being Independent, and the difference of the Independence of the USA. The conversation lasted for over an hour, and we both were still at a lost. All I could come up with was, maybe the difference is that the USA fought the British and got theirs, while the Caribbean Islands were given theirs.
But my biggest question is. “If you have gained Independence why then does the Queen still have a Representative in the form of a Governor General in the island? But here in the USA no such position, or person exist. If being Independent means FREEDOM from your oppressors. Why do you feel that you need the Queen’s blessing, or even the title of Knighthood? If you are going to FREE yourself from those that once enslaved you, then I see no need for any blessings or titles from either King, or Queen.
So are you as FREE & INDEPENDENT as our ancestors have struggled to achieve?
Freedom starts from within SELF. But if you still carry around the feelings that someone needs to give you the rights to be who you are as a productive citizen, then something is very wrong with this picture.
All the fighting, blood, sweat and tears that our ancestors has shed seem to be all for nothing.

  3. But my biggest question is. “If you have gained Independence why then does the Queen still have a Representative in the form of a Governor General in the island?
    +++++++++++++++++++++++

My grandfather years ago was confronted by a man in Bridgetown who asked for money as it was getting up to Independence.

He asked the man if he was independent to which the man replied of course!!

My grandfather then told him that independent people don’t beg and continued on his way leaving the man to scratch his head.

    America doesn’t beg!

    That’s the difference.

The Queen’s Representative doesn’t enter into this basic equation.

  4. Because our econmies remain linked to those of the colonisers.

  5. What would you have written if the UK had just cut the Cbean OFF? AS in GET LOST! Your points are correct in that we dont require Knighthoods etc BUT how many have REFUSED a Knighthood? Several Cricketers recently received Sir Andy, Sir Curtly et al Dem did NOT tell the UK to”F OFF and Die!”

While black peeps MUST NEVER FORGET about Slavery, it makes no sense to SHOOT yourself in the foot either. Is all about being successful and therefore GETTING Back because there are still Whites that dont think Blacks are equal! U are personally responsible for PROVING THEM WRONG!
John is such a well educated gent, no moping and coming down on himself, no self defeating nonsense—ONLY PROGRESS!

Jews still buy goods from Germany and certainly SELL to Germany. Many Westerners still dont like Jews, BUT they TAKE ACTION through EDUCATION and UNITY to ensure Success.

I know of only one man in Barbados who ever returned an MBE to where he got it …. Colin Hudson may he Rest In Peace.

    http://www.unitedcaribbean.com/drchtoedit.htm

“In 1975 Britain recognised his services to Barbados by making him a Member of the British Empire (MBE) (which he was to return in 2003 in protest against the British Government’s war against Iraq). In 1994 Barbados awarded him the Gold Crown Merit.”

  7. …. but I know of two who have been stripped of their knighthood

    Allen Stanford and Robert Mugabe!!

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_politics/7473243.stm

    http://www.telegraph.co.uk/finance/financetopics/sir-allen-stanford/6489156/Allen-Stanford-stripped-of-knighthood-in-Antigua.html

…. and I could think of a few here who seriously need their knuckles rapped by Her Majesty …. God Save the Queen.

You imagine if we didn’t have Her Majesty as the Queen of Barbados we would have no hope of ever seeing peoples being called to account!!!!!!!!!

  8. Think about this.

Sir Elton John, Sir Mick Jagger

  9. ”If you have gained Independence why then does the Queen still have a Representative in the form of a Governor General in the island?”

    Fairly simple to answer.

Because still, we do not trust ourselves and our representatives to represent and govern us fairly, justly and in good conscience.

Unfortunately, with current actions and events, maybe we are right?

    Nuff said.

  10. Emancipation day from what, we are falling into the hands of an unjust economic system that generates growth at the expense of jobs, continues to marginalize the poor and tear the safety net

Hudson was a White fella if I remember correctly, music teacher!

WE NEED another Emanicipation Day in 2014. From the YOKE that is this DLP.

First let me say that I am sorry for you and for your friend. You both should make a trip to your nearest public library to read some Caribbean and some United States history, and maybe at the same time attend some history classes at your nearest community college or university.

The British gave the Caribbean nothing. The British have gained more form their relationship with the Caribbean that the Caribbean will ever gain from the British.

America is not great because they fought, and the Caribbean is not poor because we were “given”

America is great mostly because when the European settlers came they exploited the indigenous peoples, took their land, and for hundreds of years rode on the backs of the enslaved African peoples who received no labour for their work, and so were unable to accumulate nothing to leave to their children.

That sort of brutality practiced in America tends to make a people rich. Very, very, rich.

I could be rich too if I was prepared to brutalize the American youth by shipping cocaine and other drugs to them.

But I have no wish to be rich,

So I have no need to be brutal.

I have no desire to corrupt the American youth.

So good afternoon to you and to your friend, and a happy Labour day, Thanksgiving and Christmas to you.

  13. for hundreds of years rode on the backs of the enslaved African peoples who received no labour for their work, and so were unable to accumulate nothing to leave to their children.

CORRECTION: Received no wages for their work

  14. And America is not so great

Even now in the 21st century African Americans are generally poorer, in worse health, have shorter life expectancy, are more likely to be arrested, are more likely to be convicted of a crime, are more likely to be imprisoned than white Americans or than Afro Caribbean peoples.

Why do you think this is?

    Think man THINK.

God did not give you and your friend heads just so that you can wear hats.

  15. Simple Simon

You could also be someone else wife, if you were caught, convicted and sentenced to the federal prison for selling drug to the American youth. Simple, you ought to give some thought to your precious bottom, before your embark on the endeavor of selling drug to the American youth. Federal prison ain’t like Barbados prison because over here, as you probably know, you have to pay big butts to keep you behind intact sir.

  16. Dear Dompey:

Cheeze-on-bred man. Please read what I wrote again

“I could be rich too if I was prepared to brutalize the American youth by shipping cocaine and other drugs to them…But I have NO wish to be rich,..
So I have NO need to be brutal…I HAVE NO DESIRE TO CORRUPT THE AMERICAN YOUTH.”

    Get it now?

May you and the American youth live to be 100 years old and be in perfect health up until then.

    Happy belated July 4th too.

  17. Simple Simon

Let’s face it, America isn’t perfect place by any stretched of the human imagination, but it is one of the greatest idea of human government, in human history. Name any place in the world were all of the inhabitants from the two hundred odd countries in our world lives in relative harmony. And as far as African Americans are concern, yes the system has been always fair to them. I think we all could agree on that fact, but that still shouldn’t stop some African Americans particularly, in the inner-cities of America from behaving worse than some wild animals.

  18. Simpy
Why are U connecting RICH with BRUTALISATION? While they are Mafia and other Corrupt Pols/ Business people one can be stinking RICH and be a good person!

2 Billionaires who are giving Billions away, working to help Africans are Buffet and Gates, neither made their $$$$$$$$$$ by BRUTALISING anyone!

    U can be RICH legitimately:

    Is Michael Jordan a crook?
    Is Shaq?
how bout Magic?–one of my favourite peeps

  19. Simple Simon

You need to inculcate the idea in your mind, that there is no such thing as perfection within the scope of human government. The perfect idea of government that you have obviously envision, is found deep within the dark domain of the human mind, and it is by all intents and purposes an Idealist dream. Now, return to reality brother!

  20. Simple Simon

Haven’t for America, people like me myself would not have been able to send the US dollar Back home, to help sustain our shallow economy. And this is applicable to the two hundred odd countries in our world today Simple. You’re obviously, looking at the negative aspects of the American life, but what about the positive aspects?

  21. @MoneyBrain August 1, 2014 at 2:24 PM “Why are U connecting RICH with BRUTALISATION? While they are Mafia and other Corrupt Pols/ Business people one can be stinking RICH and be a good person!”

Did I say that rich is always connected with brutalization? No I did NOT. But is rich sometimes connected with brutalizaton? Yes. And in the context in which I wrote of the brutalization of the indigenous American people and the enslavement of African people in the United States dor hundreds of years was I lying?

@MoneyBrain August 1, 2014 at 1:10 PM “Hudson was a White fella if I remember correctly, music teacher!:

Hudson was not a music teacher. He was an environmental activist.

The Simple never lies. Thee is never any need t lie? The Simple is too Simple to lie.

I let the facts speak for themselves.

  22. And moneybrain good afternoon to you and to youand a happy Labour day, Thanksgiving and Christmas to you.

And I hope that you had a happy Canada Day, July 1st.

  23. Dompey August 1, 2014 at 2:41 PM “Haven’t for America, people like me myself would not have been able to send the US dollar Back home”

If you are sending U.S. dollars back home to your parents it is because you owe your parents who supported you from infancy to adulthood, who sent you to school, who provided food, shelter, clothing, medicine, education, moral guidance etc. You owe your parents big time.

And if you are sending U.S. dollars back home to your children, then you owe your children too. Because if you do not support your own children, who do you expect to support them then?

You had your fun? Now pay.

  24. Simpy
They have peeps pun here that could be easily misled so I have to clarify.

U sure Hudson did not teach music too?

Simpy, ETERNAL HAPPINESS to you and yours!

  25. Colin Hudson was an agriculturist, also invented the cane harvester for Barbados use,set up SIDS,was the originator of what today is the Future Center Trust……and the list can go on…..he was an english chap who loved Bim.

    THERE WERE TWO HUDSONS

ONE WAS GERALD WHO CAME TO BARBADOS TO TEACH MUSIC AT QC AND BECAME ORGANIST AT ST MICHAELS FOR ABOUT 50 YEARS
    HE ALSO TAUGHT”SINGING”AT HC

THE OTHER HUDSON WAS THE BELOVED DR COLIN, WHO DID SO VERY MANY THINGS.

COLIN REALLY KNEW A LOT ABOUT A LOT OF THINGS, . NOT LIKE PROF BRASS BOWL

COLIN REALLY KNEW A LOT ABOUT A LOT OF THINGS, . AND HE STAYED AWAY FROM THE THINGS ABOUT WHICH HE KNEW NOTHING— A DELIGHTFUL MAN

  27. Simple Simon

We know from our own family, as well as others, that there is no such thing as perfection within this institution. So why would you expect government to be without spots and blemishes?

  28. Ron Paul was denied television coverage by the major networks and nudged and forced out ..he was too dangerous to the powers that be or were .BECAUSE HE TOLD THE TRUTH.
the truth is not acceptable in politics, his son Rand Paul has taken on his fathers legacy and is the only hope for america and the world.
will he be also pushed aside?. we will see.!
if he is the world ,not just america will be in imminent danger.
the black man and the white man must tolerate one another.
the reason being that their is a much larger force of china,North Korea,AL Qaeda,Illuminati,Taliban, terrorist Muslims, and more will be at our throats.
although a white man may hold hate in his head for blacks, or blacks hold hate in their heads for whites ,will have to be agreed to disagree to fight back these factions.i believe the white and black people are the most alike. and therefore have to stand together against what is to come .
fore going the race debate over death to all of us.
my opinion.i am no one .i am merely making a observation in these times.

Hudson was a White fella if I remember correctly, music teacher!

    +++++++++++++++++

    Check GP.

All I can add is that they were from different generations.

Gerald Hudson was a fighter pilot in WWI and use to regale us with stories of what it sounded like when a soldier was shot in the lung …… Think it was to encourage us to sing lustily!!

Colin Hudson’s father fought in the WWII. He dealt with unexploded bombs and was decorated for his service.

Colin came to Barbados in the early 60’s and was a mechanical engineer among many other things.

  30. Thanks Gp/ John. Yes Gerald was the music fella. I didnt realise there were 2 people.

Ron Paul lucky dem crooked Pols did not cut off his oxygen! He and Rand are straight shooters which is difficult in Politics

  31. BarbadodsAdvisor Actual

Let me inform your thinking for just one moment because you obviously, haven’t any understanding of the psychological- apparatus of the American people. Now, listen very carefully sir: when there is an issue of national-security importance, such as the 9/11 and the Japanese attacked on Pearl Harbor etc, Black as well as White put their diffirence aside in one common aim. This has happened during the attacks on America during 9/11 because at the time I was an active member of the armed forces, and while wearing the Army uniform during that time. I heard Black, White, Hispanic, Asian etc, saying to me with the words as clear as day: GO AND GET THEM. And we all rode around the neighborhood with our American flags, and bumper stickers which read: united we stand and divided we fall. You could not find a Black man during the 9/11 attacks, who said an unkind word about America, bearing in mind the injustices Blacks continues to suffer in this country. PLAIN AND SIMPLE, WE WERE UNITED AGAINST A COMMON FOE.

  32. Excerpt from Confidential US Embassy Cable in the 1970’s. “BARBADIANS IN GENERAL HAVE HARDLY SHOWN MUCH INTEREST IN MATTERS OF A NATIONAL INTEREST FARLESS THOSE OF AN INTERNATIONAL NATURE

  33. It is not secret that Ron Paul is a Racist. His racial bigotry is matter of public record, with actually came to light during President Obama first bid for office.

  34. My strong opinion on black people in de US, having moved hey so from Bim. Half de problem is two tiefing, lying and self serving traitors called Sharpton and Jackson that continually preach to black people that they can’t escape the ghetto without govt assistance or some other charity and destroy their self worth. All the time they living like kings in de white man world. Should be tried for crimes against humanity for destroying the hopes of at least three generations of black people and polluting the dream of Dr King.

Every successful black person I know here has rejected these two hypocrites and moved on to live well. None have any use for these cockroaches who only come out when there is press and opportunity to bathe in the spotlight.

    My humble opinion.

  35. Another historical fact about America: in times of national- security crisis, the President as well as Congress work together like a well oiled machine. The President is able to get every and anything pass during this time; take a good look as FDR during the Great-Depression and George W. Bush during 9/11.

  36. @ Simple Simon.
Brother, PLEASE don’t get it twisted. I will NEVER put Barbados down. I just wanted to know why it’s so important to still seem to be governed in some way by the British. PLEASE don’t take offense. And I don’t think that the good old USA is the greatest place on earth either.
So in-case I have offended you or anyone else for that matter, I do apologize.
By the way neither my friend or I are by any means stupid either. And books don’t really have all the answers either.

  37. Konkieman,

what you’re saying makes sense on the superficial level, but when you studying the social and historical forces which have given rised to Jackson’s and Sharpton’s thought processes, you’ll understand where their coming from. Have you heard about Trail of Tears? Listen! Jackson and Sharpton are the two voices which keeps racial- bigotry in checked in America, and before them it were the black muslim Malcolm X and the Black Pather stokely Carmichael, who happened to be Trinidadian by birth.

  38. Say all what you want, but i do believe the buckingham palace crowd got the better of the deal, they benefited from slavery and with all their ‘business interests’ in and around the Caribbean, they are still benefiting from black people’s inability to see the big picture……blacks are still blind as bats and still believe these people are saviors, buckingham palace is not doing anyone in the Caribbean any favors, as usual they will continue to look out for their own self interest and remain the penultimate parasites.

  39. Konkieman

You have to ask yourself in complete honesty, whether or not the West Indian of Afro-descent and the Native African, truly understand the ways of the man of Eurropean extraction, as does the Native American and African American?

  40. @ Konkieman | August 1, 2014 at 5:15 PM,
Your comments are complete and utter bull. You should be kissing the feet of all those African Americas who fought for their freedom. I guess you was not living in the USA during the period of the civil’s rights movement where many blacks made great sacrifices in order to create a better future for their off-spring. What was your contribution to the cause in little ole Barbados?

In the UK we have half-arsed Africans who make similar derogatory comments about Caribbean’s – especially those of Jamaican extraction; ignorant to the fact that it was those same Caribbean’s (the majority Jamaican) who fought hard to make the UK a better place for blacks.

This in a nutshell is the problem with the black race: when it comes to revolution we have a minority who stand firm and do all of the fighting and then we have a parasitical majority who always pick from the low hanging fruit brought to them by those who fought for justice.

  41. Interesting discussion on CBCTV about the inability of Blacks, especially women, to show pride in their natural appearance. The willingness to not wear natural hair a good example.

  42. David,

It is an issue yet to be had. But some BLACK women would argue that the synthetic only serves to enhance the Black woman’s natural beauty. All in all, it is a matter of opinion because most Black women who wear this synthetic hair, would also argue that it has little to do with the desire to appear White. I personally, think that some Black women throw the heap of rugs upon their head because it is to difficult to manage.

  43. So wuh the topic EMANCIPATION……

    Lets start with wunnaself….

Emancipate the mind from dependency \
Emancipate wunna self from a life of selfishness ,
Emancipate wunna self from a life of greed and dishonesty..
Emancipate wunna self from taking and not wanting to give back,,,( the LORD loves a cheerful giver)
Emancipate wunna self from lies and hypocrisy ..
Emancipate wunna self from self hate ..and the crab in the barrel mentality,,,
all the above leads to a life of worthlessness and poor self esteem,,GO ahead Emancipate WUNNA SELF…

  44. Our forebears fought against the oppressive system, with some giving their lives for the cause that led to chattel freedom, indentureship, internal self-government, independence and republican status.

The above extract from the blog post is instructive. Others give their lifes so that some of us can do what is easy and popular?

  45. http://bit.ly/1nZWo9y

"No nation can truly progress if it ignores its history. Nor can a people have confidence in themselves and their future unless they come to terms with the past, however painful that past might have been. With perseverance, fortitude and enormous courage, a resilient people can turn a legacy of evil and oppression into a compelling force for good."
