Mark Maloney
Mark Maloney

Maloney doth protest too much, wethinks – BU

Before the advent of social media political bag men like Hallam Nichols, Rodney Wilkinson, Gline Harrison and David Shorey blissfully operated under the radar.  An unsuspecting population were ignorant of the ‘deals’ made to the benefit of a few members of the political class and others in the private sector.

The traditional media has always been complicit during this dark period by playing the role of pariah to the establishment. Listeners to the exchange between David Ellis and Dennis Johnson on talk radio today (1/07/2014) experienced the timid DNA of our leading media practitioners. Moderator Dennis Johnson rightfully questioned, on live radio, why David Ellis – listen to the Brasstacks Show 1,2 and 3, Manager of Programming at Voice of Barbados, had not taken the opportunity to probe Mark Maloney who called the programme on Monday (30/05/2014) about the level of political contributions by his company. A question made relevant by Bizzy Williams’ recent begging politicians statement. Ellis was provoked by Johnson’s comment to call the talk show and once challenged Johnson became convinced if he wanted to receive his next pay check he had to publically apologise. It was another dark moment for David Ellis to follow the Adrian Loveridge located in a separate studio Barney Lynch interview.

It is an open secret both political parties have attracted millions in contributions to finance political campaigns and have felt no pressure to publicly disclose monies received. Common sense suggests if a political party receives large campaign donations, when elevated to government, there maybe the temptation to show favour. Bizzy Williams’  revelation served to eliminate any doubt about how political parties have been operating in Barbados post-Independence. Why should the authorities leave it to companies to be ‘even handed’  when having to deal with political parties?

Mark Maloney has become a household name in Barbados especially when the Governor of the Central Bank chose to hold him up as an example for Barbadians to emulate.  Those who have ears to the ground know that his companies have been winning several public sector contracts. About public sector tenders, one only has to read a decade of Auditor General reports to be aware of the graft and wilful flouting of government’s financial rules to be suspicious of any company doing voluminous business with government. Mark Maloney should have enough sense to appreciate that the goody two shoes argument that says Barbadians should  only look at the benefits his companies bring to Barbados is a moot position. Governments of Barbados, and especially the incumbent, have operated in a culture which lacks transparency, why the hell should the citizenry be expected to be so gullible to accept Maloney at his word?

Mark Maloney, welcome to the age of social media, expecting citizens to stop asking question is like trying to push a genie back in the bottle. Of course some will take bites out of you but this is the nature of beast if you operate in the public eye 24/7 . One question Dennis did not pose to you – why is the gas station at  Coverly Town Square  not open for business? Please confirm or deny it has something to do with Town Planning permissions.

We are watching your Maloney.

  1. Ellis force Jonson to apologize to him ,,, and Johnson only suggested that an alternate line of questioning could be pursued …. Talk about thin skinned…

I heard Mark Maloney admit, on Brasstacks, that his company make campaign contributions to both political parties. As far as I know, neither he nor Bizzy Williams who admitted previously, has ever made the statutory declarations to the Supervisor of Elections. They hav therefore admitted to breaching the election laws of this country. Fortunately for them, there is a “statute of limitation” of one year for the prosecution of these offences.

The Representation of the People Act provides that an MP could forfeit his seat for lying on his returns. It would appear that either Maloney and Bizzy or the MPs making the declarations are lying. I tend to think that it is the MPs who breach the laws to get elected only to go to parliament make laws for others to obey.

This is the kind of stuff that commissions of enquiry are made of but it won’t happen here.

Ellis is too thin skinned and full of himself. He is too used to people calling in and stroking his ego and he has bought into the nonsense about how great he is. He therefore feels that he can’t be challenged.

Look who is on the Central Bank Board peddling his influence? http://www.centralbank.org.bb/WEBCBB.nsf/0/6071527aa001ac24042572ec0052b220?OpenDocument

  5. Many have heard the heavy handed manner Maloney behaved in the BARL matter. No man is an island.

  6. In case anyone does not realize Mr Maloney has a fairly big ego. It is Mark Maloney together with a few ‘others with money’ who are keeping the Minister of Finance & Economic Affairs in that position notwithstanding the fact that he has been a complete failure and is totally ill-suited and ill-equipped for the role.
That is what the DLP has come to in 2014.
What ever happen to exploring Barbados offshore waters for oil and natural gas? Who has taken some money from Trinidad to ensure those offshore blocks are not explored.

  7. Caswell

It is a fact that while the NHC was advertising a bidding procedure for a housing project at Coverley the late David Thompson went to Cabinet and used Rule 239 to award the project to Bjerkhamn and Maloney.
Bids and offers were returned by two before Thompy done get NHC to award the project to them rascals.

  8. There was a crooked man, and he walked a crooked mile,
    He found a crooked sixpence against a crooked stile;
He bought a crooked cat which caught a crooked mouse,
And they all lived together in a little crooked house.

Simply brilliant is the only way to describe the way our boy Baffy couched his words on the program yesterday, getting in the dig at his nemesis (we know dat had to happen) while making many a salient point without crossing that fine line that activates the finger of the producer.@ David. ..Maloney doth protest too much. .wethinks. My question is where does BU see a difference between Maloney and Ajax Robinson? One is just a bigger liar than the other. .methinks.

  10. @Hamilton

One is from the economic power elite.

  11. Hamilton:
Good point, the BLP and DLP have been doing this underhand business so long that it comes naturally. In 1994, the COW gave the BLP about 1 million for its campaign. Out of that COW received about a bout 100 million worth of contracts. Do not even count the high way fiasco where Bizzy bought a plane to fly around in a make sport at the “political class” !!!

Now we have the Innotechs and Maloney and the ones down st. lucy under the DLP!! 300 houses at coverley for the government to pay for as they will not sell!!

I was listening to the program but I did not believe that David Ellis could be so STUPID as to call for an apology for what by Dennis was an EXCELLENT point!! But then again what could be expected from a man who, after being baptized byt Granville, believes he knows every thing!!

  12. In this matter which unfolded yesterday BU is reminded the VoB afternoon program is sponsored by Williams Group of Companies. When a moderator feels so hem pecked that he can’t critique another moderator – let is say for the sake of ratings or being of good conscience then we know freedom of expression is under threat. Ellis got hos apology but the majority of Bajans hailed DJ who dared to be an honest man..

  13. Hamilton Hill Avatar

@ baffy.. I was about to tell you that there is something that you could teach to the journalists in Barbados, but then I remembered that it is about balls or the lack thereof, and as Caswell told me in my very first contribution to BU theirs have no hair. Seriously though, one of the biggest problems we have in Barbados is the piss poor quality of journalism. Even when a young enthusiastic, freshman journalist sources a story, depending on whose toes are mashed the story dies a natural death.

  14. Bizzy Williams ain’t the one who constantly praising Marl Maloney, so you expect that Dennis Johnson could behave as he like when William sponsoring the show? The man already demonstrate for wunna that when it comes to white people, like the racist fella from H&B, Bizzy will make the final determination and call the ‘shot’

  15. Also we need to know the trail of money that went from the Treasury to MOH/NHC to ?
It was millions per month, each and every month. Which private sector player collected money each month from those monies transferred from the Treasury without Parliament’s permission?

  16. Hamilton Hill Avatar

@ David. ..One is from the economic power elite. ..and the other could not care less whom he pulls down, crushes, or hurts in his quest to get there. GOT IT!

  17. Hamilton Hill Avatar

Mr Maloney would have Bajans believe that for the most part his work is private sector based. ..Well bajans would you all also believe that ugly ass me dating Re Re?

  18. Mark Maloney is a super citizen. His company is a super citizen. As a super citizen these people can create their own laws where they deem none exist. They can flaunt others where they deem that such were not prepared for them. How else is it that companies like Sagicor, Bizzy Williams Group and COW, Simpson Motors could pretend that there is a law that permits them to give millions of dollars to political parties outside of the ‘per elector’ amount. We know that the DLP headquarters was built by COW Williams and there were at least the absence of an arm’s length arrangement. Then, how on earth can we expect that anything coming out of there could be to our primary benefit? We know that OSA appointed COW as the principal seller of Bajan lands, seller of the family silver for short term benefits. We know who the bag men are when parties are in ‘power’. We know! But nobody ever goes to jail. You see there is no law in Barbados that has to be respected by the monied class, the super citizen. It is them who own the law. You could commit murder in Barbados and get away with it, if yuh got money, far less the regular bribery and electoral malfeasance! These are crimes which have spawned such sustained illegalities to make the illegal now legal.

  20. In terms of professional etiquette, Dennis Johnson was wrong. Right thinking professional people know that what Dennis Johnson did is certainly not best practice. Reprimands, cautions, and advice to fellow colleagues are best administered within the confines of the office and certainly not in public. Of course, the norm in this country is to forget principle and support actions, once such actions favour whom we see as favoured in our own eyes.

  21. @Oilman

Nonsense, Ellis versus Johnson – contrived or not – is an occasion which is anticipated by listeners. Johnson’s views resonate with those who want change, Ellis is an establisment kind of guy. What Johneon did could have been turned into a big positive IF Ellis was not so thinskinned. You cannot see a talk host , even an employee, as a ‘colleague’.

  22. Mark Maloney is a very genuine sounding character … All good senior executives have this classy quality. They are “experts” at public relations. It’s up to you to believe them or not.

    I am a born skeptic.

  23. @David
Well it is clear to me that for the sake of getting political points across, many are willing to deny that at a professional level, Dennis johnson’s approach in going public with what was essentially a personal issue related to his view on how David should question an interviewee, was clearly unprofessional.

  24. @ David
We can’t understand why we would pretend to have a conversation but somehow the interlocutors of that national dialogue are to obey some arcane rule which says there is to be a sameness of ideas on all matters. There can only to two side to every issue, not three or four or a thousand. And everybody is on that side or this, especially if one has power or perceived power over another. These are the kinds of fictitious precepts that pass for much of what is Barbados. This kind of thinking tells us that we are still too fearful of the powerful and lack a serious commitment to independent thinking.

There is no planning permission for the Bushy Park redevelopment, just weeks before the track extensions and buildings were completed the advertisements were running in the press for the Town Hall Meeting phase of the Environmental Impact Assessment; so much for the system that allows residents’ concerns to be addressed in the planning stage. At least in Bim when you buy a politician or civil servant you get what you pay for.

  26. These men have demonstrated that they are hypocrites. Recall Bizzy Williams’ speech as quoted in the March 29, 2014 edition of Barbados Today, under the caption “Opportunities with Sandals/Beaches”:

“MY LOYALTY TO BARBADOS AND THE PEOPLE OF BARBADOS HAS NO BOUNDS. My track record is transparent. I have many hard-working Bajan friends who share my feelings about our country and its people who are busting their brains to find ways to get our rock out of this recession.”

Against the background of his loyalty to the people of Barbados, he has told us an Englishman will manage Williams Industries when he retires. But if we check his speech carefully, we will know for sure which class of Barbadian has his loyalty.

“Bernie” Weatherhead is one of them. I have admired his work and continuous investment to expand his business enterprises in Barbados. To demonstrate, we recently placed most of Williams Industries Insurance business with his Sun General company. I shop at his I’mart and Hallmark stores.”

  27. @Oilman

DJ is a talk show host who should be given liscense by the company to attack the issues. Ellis could have defalted the issue by giving his view even if it meant taking one on the cheek, there was a bigger issue being waged by DJ, one that he has attracted alot of respect. We cannot be part of a change process if we don’t want to flex.

  28. @David
Dennis Johnson would have done better to address the issue of campaign financing specifically in the way he thought it should be dealt with. Instead he decided to go public and criticise the Ellis approach. Dennis could have attacked the issue without distracting us all by his meaningless attack on Ellis. So one has to question if Dennis Johnson is sincere in his concerns about campaign financing or whether he was looking for an opportunity to attack Ellis.

I really don’t see the relevance of your point in relation to the licence that Dennis has as a moderator. Ellis and Johnson are work colleagues first and foremost even though Ellis called the programme. I listened to the recording of that said Brass Tacks episode and I think you should too. Ellis stated clearly why he posed the questions the way he did. Johnson was out of place and showed utter disrespect. Ellis is no school boy who has now entered journalism. There is a time and place for everything and a public talk show was not the place for Johnson to criticise the journalistic methods of a work colleague.

  29. No surprises here…. David Ellis is a typical Bajan brass bowl who fits into the role of “journalist” that suits the local purpose..
    ….offend no one
    ….avoid any threat of lawsuits
….keep your advertisers at all cost
    ….kowtow to whites and ministers…
No wonder he is the boss.

On the other hand, DJ seems to have avoided whatever BB stamp that has been placed on Bajans – by being born in Grenada…we are just lucky that Gairy chased him here from Grenada…. 🙂

Listening to Maloney, it is clear that these white people have conceptualized a reality in which they have the RIGHT to be forever Plantation Lords – while blacks Bajans should thank God that, as yard boys and girls, we are no longer subjected to lynchings and public flogging…
…and they OPENLY brag about how they have bribed our black politicians in order to realize their conceptual framework…

NOW THIS VIOLATES OUR ELECTION LAWS…..and yet from our DPP, CJ, AG, COP, PRESS, OPPOSITION MPs, CHURCH officials, Public Servants, BAR Association, BARP, Mothers Unions, Girls Guides …… NOT ONE ASK….
    …only Caswell’s lone voice from the wilderness…..

…and wunna play wunna don’t understand brass bowls…?

    ……………………………………..
Bush Tea, can you honestly say Ellis offends no one?
Bush Tea, can you honestly expect any right thinking person not to try to avoid being sued in this country? Thing is that from de lil I know, de last law suit came from Noel Lynch and we know who de moderator was. Don’t we?
Bush Tea, can we honestly expect a radio station to survive without advertisers?
Bush Tea, name one journalist in this country who does not kowtow to whites and ministers. I dare to say that de closest we get to having a journalist who is willing to ask de hard questions comes in de form of David Ellis.

I like to be realistic and practical. Why you think a man like Elombe leff Bim? Boy de kind of tight system we got in Bim dictates that one must agitate in a smart and balanced fashion to reach the desired goals. Anyone who thinks an all out radical attack gonna work in this country only looking for a crack head or a gun shot.

  32. Oilman wrote “There is a time and place for everything and a public talk show was not the place for Johnson to criticise the journalistic methods of a work colleague.”

I agree. Dennis Johnson should just keep his mouth shut and collect his salary just like the rest of gutless wonders called Bajans.

He should remember never to question the actions of his superiors or question the motives of politicians and white Bajans.

Actually given his personality and his brown skin I am sure he could be wearing the beige Kahki dockers pants and white shirt with a logo and driving home a suv with a logo.

So Dennis go to work and play nice with David Ellis and continue to collect your salary.

There is no room in Barbados for real journalists.

  33. @Hants

Hard to believe that some members of a 98% black population on Bim still blame the other 2% for their misery. Must be easier to criticise Whites, Jews, Chinese, Indians, Mulattoes than to accept that black people voted black jackasses with begging hands into power. We either live with our decision or address the error, blaming insignificants will not defer our blame.

  35. This is real journalism and news media as it should be.

  36. LOL @ Oilman
…Boss you are saying the same thing as Bushie…. Ellis has the ability to look like a serious journalist – without rocking the boat…. THAT is why he is the boss…
…shiite then…Ellis is actually electable in Barbados. …and YES, he does offend some people….like Baffy ….and others who foolishly seek to discuss issues on VOB transparently and openly like we do on BU…

Fellows like DJ, Lowdown and Elombe will always end up having to run and hide….
You need to understand that ultimately, the responsibility for justice, righteousness and fairness in a society is a COLLECTIVE one….
IT CANNOT BE LEFT TO POLITICIANS, BUSINESSMEN OR ANY SINGLE GROUP…..
…when therefore we have shiite libel laws (like we do)….or shitty public order acts….or a lack of transparency in PUBLIC affairs. SOMEONE(S) need to piss on such laws and upset the rotten apple cart….in the national interest.

  37. Those who criticize Whites do so against the background how power and money are used to manipulate. This is real.

@ David: accepted; but the greatest financial manipulation and tragedy in the history of this country is the one orchestrated by Parris, CLICO and Thompson and we still voted Thompson’s legacy gov’t back into power even after the depth of the teefin’ and misery it caused was widely known and reported by victims. CLICO is our Jonestown in terms of social and financial massacres. But both of the individuals involved were mulattoes so I may be arguing against myself.

  41. @Frustrated Businessman

Bear in mind the number of affected Clico policyholders.

  45. The Mark Maloneys, Bizzys, Cows are just repeatedly pointing out the weaknesses in the black leaders, black males and everything that is vulnerable about the black majority on the island…….while laughing their asses off at black people.

Again, Mark Maloney does not own Preconco, his brother Stuart does not own the company next door, those are Cow’s and Bizzy’s group of companies……and these bribers will continue to point out how weak and inadequate the black leaders and black males are on the island until

    1. they day they all die ….or
    2. their children and grandchildren continue to do the same…… or

    3. the majority black people and leaders on the island get with the program and stop allowing them to do shit.

It’s all well and good to criticize the ‘whites’ and wannabe whites but make no mistakes, the blacks are the ones to blame for allowing this to happen for so many decades and continue until today, the black leaders are useless. They make it seem like there are more than 50,000 bajan whites and others on the island when there are not even 10,000…they make me sick those black leaders.

Bushman……remember i told you in one comment, when black males are perceived as weak and vulnerable and not protecting their own race, their own people, they are taken advantage of……..with extreme prejudice.

    tanks at the Port?

  49. This is somewhat off topic. Just wonder if anybody can clarify. The solid waste tax apparently has nothing to do with the collection of garbage. I was told that it is revenue needed to pay Bizzy for some solid waste treatment plant in St. Thomas? Does anybody know if this is correct? The GOB owes Bizzy some 34 million dollars?

  50. Thanks for the early post with the link to the Central Back site. How de ass a non Bajan like B-Jerk-Ham get on the board of this bank? This is bare shite. Obvious influence peddling for the super rich crowd.
