  1. so what is your point colonel .that black bajans should have forfeited the right to attend the event.. .colonel reality says differrent.people not going make a sacrifice when the end result was all but. written and concluded that the event would be going as schedule with all players in place..saying that bajans did not

  2. Generally Bajans are not the type to stay away from the event on the basis of what Clarkson said, not the kind of crowd that follow car racing anyway. The last time Bajans boycotted an event in numbers was when the West Indies Cricket Board dropped Cummins. The majority of Bajans although they probably didn’t like Clarkson’s comment lack any moral obligation to demonstrate against what he said. Seeing the new Bushy Park and hobnobbing was more the top of mind position.

“…there , is no way that anyone with a modicum of self respect would use top gear festival to address an issue which is centered around self at a time when the nerves of blacks are rattled and looking for answers to how clarkson after his use of insulting language about blacks was allowed to come to a land in a country which is predominately black”

the government which u worship, prostituted themselves with Wayne Maloney to bring that racism rat here…that says alot about the Minister of Tourism, and that ugly runt Denis Kellman

“Do we realise that Barados is presently beamed to the whole world as the country in which the world’s most popular F1 driver LOUIS HAMILTON is driving even in the middle of the F1 season … can any amount of money pay for that advertisement …”

Barbados is showing the world that we are still a colony with slave mentality…since we are fine with massa insulting our colour and still head over heals delirious that he should choose to dine with us….thank God that my Indian granny taught me how to love my black culture

  5. Bottom line is next time Clarkson cannot contain himself, and history has shown repeatedly his is a jackass quite incapable of such……his employer the BBC will fire his ass as promised, the prostitutes who now make up the government in Barbados can then hire him.

Not everything has to be a race/slavery issue. Randomly plucked from the internet:
“What I noticed in watching the different services is the emptiness at the front of some of the churches. It is the age old question: Why don’t people sit in the front of the church?
I don’t sit in the front of the church. If I sat in the front row I would feel awfully silly if I was standing and everyone else was sitting and I didn’t know it. I would have to always keep looking over my shoulder wondering if I was doing the right thing. Do you suppose other people feel the same way?
Maybe it has something to do with having to walk to the front of the church and everyone is watching you while you find your place in the pew.
I never liked sitting in the front of the classroom either. I was always afraid the teacher was going to call on me and I wouldn’t know the answer. …… Could that be the same reason that people don’t sit in front in church? Perhaps they are afraid the pastor is going to call on them during the sermon and they are not going to know the answer.”

  8. smooth chocolate …… ,,there is nothing that govt could do to stop clarkson who works for the BBC and not the govt of barbados from coming to barbadois,,,clarkson is part of the packaging in all the contracts signed and agreed by all parties most likely the govt of barbados had no say so in what role clarkson would play,,,this is foolishness which u and all BLP yarfowls regurgitate out of ignorance or political grandstanding … the fact is that outside govt making a statement which would been seen as govt taking the political high road, by BLP yardfowls and being not enough,,,the event would have gone on,,, having the added attraction of the BLP yardfowls interpreting or misinterpreting govt statement as pandering and inadequate ,,u guys need to go get a life and find a “real” hard issue one which would resonate with the voters,,,,,,,,

It seems as though you have a self-esteem problem to address because if you feel good about yourself is should be easy to walk in front of the congregation without being self-conscious. St. George, the people I admire most in the Church, are those persons with questionable reputations, but their do not allow anything or anyone to prevent them from serving God, despite their questionable past.

Please note the inverted commas around the words in my post. That denotes that they are not my words – they are someone else’s which I am quoting.
And by the way, I don’t go to church as I do not believe in Christianity – a (mostly) European religion which was imposed on the British Colonies.

  11. ST ,George or should i adress u as Dragon are u are quoting some one elses words as emphasisnor to clarufy a previous statement which u had made in which case if either then u would be in agreement with want the person is sayting ,,,,,,anyhow what is or was your point in quoting the article ,,from my vantage point there seems to be an agreement or an advantage for you in quoting such a statement..

Robert Ross you are an Uncle Tom jackass!!!!!!!!!!

  14. Remember the House Negro cut his eyes at the Yard Negro because of his privileged position in the master’s domiciliary residence. It is the divide and conquer tactic the White man continues to utilize in his efforts influence the thinking of the Black man. Listen! The only successful slave revolt recorded in the history books, was that in Haiti, all else failed because the House Negro squealed on the Yard Negroes. From the Nat Turner, as well as the John Brown revolts are historical example of the Uncle Tom Syndrome.

I was quoting someone else’s words found in a Google search which supported my view of what it would be like to go to church and why you would not occupy the front pews.
I did this as I am not religious so only go to church when it is what my friends and family want me to do.
I am aware that people do not generally occupy the front rows in church, class or the like. I don’t believe this is anything to do with the after-effects of slavery. It certainly wasn’t when I chose not to occupy the front desks in school when I was a kid; more that I wanted to be one of the crowd.

Noticed that I said specifically “Anglican” . A reluctance to sit at the front of the church does not obtain in other religions in Barbados . I was around when front pews with a total capacity to seat some 50 people were occupied by just 4 or 5 privilege people , while at the back of the church , the rank and file were packed tightly together, and woe betide any son -of -a- bitch,or daughter , who dare sit in one of those front pews. The Sexton, who was a clone between an Army Sergeant -Major and a Pitbull, would unceremoniously shooed that offending person back to the n-yard section. (extract from the draft of ” Living behind the Plantation Great House.”
I was also around when a young Priest on his first posting to a rural Chapel, gave the order, ” Next Sunday when I come here I do not want to see this nonsense , we will all sit together. ” Come next Sunday ,there was no problem. The privilege ones never came back, followed by many of the rank and file ,who thought that the priest was very much out of place. Nothing has changed.

“When someone could call our black brothers and sisters ‘nigger’…”

    Fella – you are demented.

  18. st george,,,,,my recollection of sitting in the front pews of the church goes like this,,,only on special occasions, weddings ,,concerts,,,,or if there was a choir boy who i was interested in , ,,just trying to get a birds eye view of all things which (then) seemed important to a childs mind,,,,,,,now the whether there is a correlation between slavery and why races choose or preference their seating style in church is open for debate…. as i too remember in hearing by the older folks that there were certain sections of the church preferably the front pews which were signaled out for people who had made substantial donations to the church now i also remember that those who were seated most of the time in those front pews were white,,but as a child ,,’little children were to be seen and not heard,,so i never questioned the validity ,,

Individuals like you are arrogant and think you are intellectually superior to those around you. In crowds you strive to be the centre of attention as you use these opportunities to show others how “smart” you are. You talk down to people while shooting down their opinions, as your opinion is the only one that counts. This evident by the fact that on this blog you love to critique every contribution while criticizing and insulting the contributor; not once have you agreed with any other opinion, but yours.

In the real world this attitude alienates you from others, so you are only tolerated by your peers. Being the coward you are, the blog gives you the forum to live out your fantasy of grandeur and provides a refuge for you, since you cannot see the disgust and contempt people have for you on their faces.

No matter what you call me my dear friend, it does not change the fact that you are a pompous jackass.

  23. I kept telling people there could never be more than 10,000 bajan whites in Barbados and even just a sprinkle from the other groups, glad to see it in black and white, maybe that list should be printed and handed out to every black bajan in Barbados, that would certainly ensure they understand that they are THE MAJORITY on the island.

“maybe that list should be printed and handed out to every black bajan in Barbados”
..perhaps..The BBs are either unable or unwilling to look at the hard facts. Thing is, if the BB’s really mobilised and flexed their spending power strategically they would be able to dismantle some of the WB economic hegemony. Shame they don’t yet see that…

    +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

I recently came across a receipt from 1919 which shows my Grandfather paid $6.00 in pew rent at Christ Church for two years.

My Grandfather was not white I figure from my research he was descended from a Free Negro man who received his freedom in 1721.

My Grandmother was also not white. She was the great grand daughter of a mulatto slave who gained her freedom (c. 1802) and was described as a Free Mulatto woman.

A few years ago I was watching a program about churches in Jamaica and I realized the pews were like small corrals with an element of privacy. I googled family pews and found Box pews so I was not imagining what I saw.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Box_pew

I have no doubt that pew rental signified social status but I think there was also a practical aspect.

I think the pew rents were paid by families with young children to provide an element of privacy for nursing mothers.

In 1919, my Grandmother had three of her seven children, the youngest one being about 3 or 4. Logic tells me that family would have taken up the greater part of a pew wherever they sat.

I recall as a teenager and young man in the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s attending St. Ambrose. There was no pew rental but there were pews which the congregation knew were for particular families and they were always occupied by members of those families whenever I went.

I think perhaps the generation or two previous had rented pews and the pews became associated with particular families. We came along as new members and adopted a pew.

I remember there was one in the centre of the church that was occupied by a coloured family, pillars of the church.

In the front there was one pew everybody knew was for one particular family, also coloured, except this generation was elderly and had no children. Just two elderly spinster ladies occupied them, but they were from a family with five children.

Both families had something in common ….. they served their Church with love and dedication.

My family also sat in a pew to the front. I more appreciated it because it was next to the door and was always cool.

It is hard to imagine such a practice continuing today not because of the so called egalitarian principles society has adopted but rather because families attending church as a group I suspect is more the exception than the rule.

…. and that’s the sad truth.

  27. Never went to Bushy Park, not for car racing and not for funerals. I doubt that I will ever go.

However the International Car Racing Federation or whatever it is called should adopt something similar to the Warsaw Convention which covers aircraft accidents. Each motor sport event should provide something like a maximum of $250,000 USD per person for injuries caused as a result of attending a motor sport activity. I am sure that part of the entry fees charged to spectators at these events can be used to purchase insurance.

Because if those staging the event do not accept any liability I am sure that we all understand that it means that we the taxpayer would be left to pay the medical costs of anyone injured at such an event.

And as a taxpayer I don’t want to shoulder such costs.

  28. I am not a car racing fan and the last thing I would drag me away from a beach on Sunday would be top gear, that said anyone that would give the island good exposure should be welcomed. However I truly believe the local press were given a bad deal. Restricted access and passes while every tom dick and Harry with a smart phone had pics, and the Trinidad and Guyana press were allowed to report. How does it go…the best china brought out for the guest?

  29. @Hants

Lewis continues to dominate in practice today.

  30. Practice 2 was tight with Alonza leading Hamilton with Vettel third. Its going to be a great race on Sunday.

    ……………………………………………………………………………………
I was also made to understand that many of the Parish Churches, kept two or three Services on Sunday Mornings,5 am, 9 am and 11 am. The planter class favoured the earlier services, while the later one was heavily patronised by the rank and file. Recently at a funeral service at a popular Anglican Parish Church, I overheard a lady, saying that her grandfather used to pay for a pew somewhere in the middle of the church. Most likely your Grandfather paid for a pew at one of the later Sunday services.
But lets face it, even in the church there was a system of colour coding which probably gave birth to the popular 3-line adage that we know so well, and is still very much in force today, the middle line of which goes, ” If you are brown, stick around.”

On the face of it that is what a person just looking would see ……

….. but that look isl not going to permit the person to really perceive what is going on.

And that is a real problem in Barbados, so often we see and never perceive.

Another way of looking at the same scenario is that a strong family unit can overcome huge odds!!

    A single individual can’t.

Before we throw our hands in the air in acceptance of what we see, we should first try to perceive what is really going on.

  34. Put another way, there is no way an individual will even dream of sitting in the pew to displace a family.

Colour does not come into it …… if is all about the power of the family.

Members of the congregation would probably eject the individual if such a stunt were pulled because it would simply be an affront to their senses.

The most the individual will ever do is make snide remarks and make a fool of themselves.
