You are right! Sugar is the cause of a lot of health problems. Not so much low glycemic sweeteners like manuka honey, Stevia and agave. Sugar generally and cane sugar in particular, is indeed more dangerous than pot salt although both are to be avoided at all and any cost. Not certain salts, like Himalayan salt though, that can actually lower HPB and have several good effects. Sugar has always been more dangerous than normal pot salt. Sugar is really a drug and should be so treated and classified!
Then there is high fructose corn syrup, which is bad, real bad and maybe be the single causal reason, as a cheap sweetener in the Western diet, which is responsible for the spike in diabetes, pre-diabetes, overweight and its link with HPB. Of course there are other less important factors as well.

There is nothing basic about biochemistry. Not many doctors can handle the fundamentals of the subject and tend to rely literature reviews to make sense of it. Yes. I know that one has to do a course in biochemistry at med school. Homocysteine is probably far more dangerous than Cholesterol. Triglycerides are too. Tri is easily controlled by Guggle or merkul which is the bark of a an Indian tree. Cholesterol maybe reduced by Policosanol which was developed in Cuba.
