Minister of Finance Chris Sinckler
Minister of Finance Chris Sinckler

Yesterday [21/10/2013] David Ellis of Voice of Barbados shared audio of Minister of Finance Chris Sinckler [MoF] and Leader of the Opposition Mia Mottley. BU finds the audio interesting because of the comments which the MoF directed at David Ellis, Dennis Johnson, Corey Layne and Netafari Caddle in their role as talk show hosts. Listen and be the judge, justified you think?

Although the focus today [22/10/2013] is expected to be on a motion of No Confidence brought by the Opposition against the MoF the broadside by the MoF on the media should be of concern. At a time when the country should be fixated on finding ways to surmount the economic challenges this is where we find ourselves. Is it not interesting both political parties eventually become confrontational with the media?

Listen to the MoF’s comment followed by the Leader of the Opposition

As stated previously MIA was personally convinced of the success of the no confidence motion against the MOF. MIA unbridled thirst for power has blinded her judgement . The movement for the no confidence came from MIA not the man on main street. She is behaving like the late Dr Haynes.

  5. Was Mia waiting for the Central Bank Report to come out so she can go after the whole government with a no-confidence motion, why have one when you can take all………………….

  6. RECESSION , RECESSION , RECESSION from from Jan 2013, three qtrs of continuing negative real GDP. The IMF and the IADB will direct and implement the measures to restore growth and foreign reserves, these agencies are the new MOF.

  7. oh Dear,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,Wuh happen……..MIA NO CONFIDENCE!if this is what the BLP going carry on with for the next four years, Then all the DEMS have to do is sit back and watch them eat their own…… MIA NO CONFIDENCE……

  8. @Pearlie

    Explain yourself!

  9. You could tell from the way the MOF spoke about an alleged threat that he was LYING.

This blatant lie was to divert from the grim news of the economy continuing to decline…….FDI fell from 473 million to 147 million. And we have a clown for a MOF saying some persons plotting to kill him.

No one needs to do this, he is killing himself…….look at his size…..look at his neck…look at his whole body……he looks a mess as my young ones would say!

Continue to laugh at Barbadians, we will soon see!

  10. @Negorman

The point is Arthur and the so called seniors voted BUT did not speak. Is it an observation worth mentioning. Was their conditional support tactical?

  11. Based on that logic, even less people “supported” Chris.

  12. @ Georgie porgie
you ask whether Mr Freundel Stuart is prime minister material? That question was answered on 21 February 2013 by the majority of voters in Barbados when the BLP after uncerimoniously throwing out Miss Mottley brought back Mr Arthurfor to fight a head to head with Mr Stuart . Where have you been all this time?

  13. @enuff

By your earlier comment we all agree the government side decided to sit this one out.

Something fishy in town. The was well orchestrated by everyone, BLP and DLP. Mia knew full well the motion of no confidence should not have been filed until the 3rd Quarter results were released.

This entire exercise has been designed to preserve Chris Sinckler as MOF by effectively tying the Prime Minister’s hand.

Well done Chris, Mia, Hartley and Peter. Congratulations.

  15. He was shameless enough to tell people that he supports Freundel 1,000%. This is coming from a man who admitted in the Sunday Sun that he was part of the movement, famously dubbed the Eager 11, to remove Freundel as Prime Minister. In fact, I believe that he was the leader. He was shameless enough to tell people that he supports Freundel 1,000%. This is coming from a man who admitted in the Sunday Sun that he was part of the movement, famously dubbed the Eager 11, to remove Freundel as Prime Minister. In fact, I believe that he was the leader.Kaymar Jordan: Why the blatant denials then and all the legal threats?

SINCKLER: People have different ways of reacting to things. I mean people are human beings. If you, one, do not know that a letter exists, or, two, did not sign or review it or sanction it, then that’s understandable. It’s a natural reaction.
Kaymar Jordan: That being said, the 11 people listed, namely yourself, Ronald Jones, Dr David Estwick, Adriel Brathwaite, Donville Inniss, John Boyce, Michael Lashley, Stephen Lashley, Mara Thompson, James Paul and Hamilton Lashley, all shared the same “grave concerns” and wanted them addressed, right?
SINCKLER: Yes, but so too did other members of the party generally, and the public. Obviously, some persons were more stringent in their views than others, and in that environment you had to make sure that those who had more stringent views were not necessarily carrying those views too far and wide, for fear that they may become distorted, as has happened

  16. Looka here Jack

What orchestrated nonsense you talking……you seems to be all befuddled with just calling names (Chris, Mia, Hartley and Peter. )….but showing no connection….give some slack Jack..if this is all you have….
So wait think Stuart sleeping or wat……come wid more just ..step back Jack

Barbados feels the heat over deteriorating finances
By Robin Wigglesworth in Bridgetown, Barbados

Barbados is battling to avoid becoming thelatest Caribbean country to fall into the cool embrace of the International Monetary Fund after a failed $500m bond sale triggered political confrontation and exacerbated concerns over the nation’s solvency.
The opposition has forced a vote of no-confidence in Christopher Sinckler, the finance minister, and it is expected this week. Some officials at multinational lenders say privately it could be only a matter of time before Barbados is forced to seek international assistance.

Do you believe the comment made by the MOF in parliament today that his life is under threat as he was told by a member of the RBPF Intelligence arm that two persons where overheard threatening to shoot him. Let’s discuss and seek to uncover why no arrest of these alleged perpetrators has not happened as yet. No bias, No

Mia is only a team player when she is leading the team. Many of her present team has realised that and they are only giving her token and when necessary, for the good appearance of the party, the support is public but never heartfelt.

The same thing is happening in the Government. I am willing to bet that most of the Cabinet have to hold their noses and support Sinckler.

At 2:47 you asked: Why did the senior BLP MP’s not speak on the motion?

I did not listen to the debate so I am not speaking of anything I heard. I believe that they could be one reason for that if I know the lady well enough. She would have covered everything the Opposition wanted to say in her speech: the others would only be repeating her and look silly, hence the apparent boycott. The others had nothing new to say.

We will continue to lament the loss of our honour and pride of place among the nations of this world for as long as the Democratic Labour Party forms the government of Barbados with this current lot of candidates.
The Barbados Labour Party has always fielded candidates of a high calibre with minor exceptions when guys like Rommel Marshall and Barney Lynch let down the team.
I would take what Ellis and Wickham take with a pinch of salt. They are both in the business of selling their services to whomsoever wishes to dress up and improve their public persona. These two are very dangerous men, more dangerous than DeLisle Worrell or Darcy Boyce. At least you know that Worrell and Boyce the Quisling are dyed in the wool DLP.Wickham and Ellis?Purveyors of Goods commonly referred to as Public Relations experts. You are brilliant enough to read between the lines these two prostitutional experts spin on VOB whenever they can do so,to make some politician or businessman look like a peer of the Realm and should be accepted at face value because they say so.Thus far the odd man out is Dennis Johnson and the odd girls out are Nefertari and Marsha. No baggage so far as I am concerned, justgood, worthwhile intent on keeping a people properly informed.

  25. David; You posted the following above;

“Do you believe the comment made by the MOF in parliament today that his life is under threat as he was told by a member of the RBPF Intelligence arm that two persons where overheard threatening to shoot him”.

Just one incident that indicates where the Barbadian society has now reached. In the old days, afaik, the nearest incident to this was when some youngsters stoned Brandford Taitt’s home in Black Rock during an election campaign. However an impeccable source high in the echelons of the party claimed that It was Brandford himself who had paid the guys to pelt the rocks to elicit sympathy from the electorate.

Till now, No one in past campaigns ever thought that any of our politicians was anything less than safe anywhere and anytime in the Island. But now, if this story can be fully believed, it speaks volumes of our fall from grace as the safest country in the region for politicians.

But, some things don’t seem to be totally at all fours with normal bajan reality. Two people overheard threatening to shoot CS:- Are these people now behind bars awaiting trial? Were they overheard on the phone or in person?

If they are not in custody was the info CS gave to the whole Nation and even World somewhat premature and dangerous as it would put these presumed thugs on their guard? Wouldn’t it have been better to be vigilant, use the bodyguards and keep quiet for now about this most serious matter and allow a sweeping investigation by casting a wide net to catch all conspirators in this most heinous plot that has the potential to be extremely damaging to Barbados’ reputation and economy?

Was CS advised by the Special Branch to give their disclosure to him the wide currency he did?

What was the main purpose of making that disclosure? Eliciting sympathy? Casting oblique aspersions on the BLP, the party that is being pilloried for its rubbing shoulder’s programme

Did he discuss the matter with the PM and Cabinet before disclosure?

PUDRYR; You need to advise us here as you seem to have high contacts in the highest of places. The possible ramifications of this story are horrendous for Barbados and the culprits need to be caught and brought to justice with the same dispatch as the 2 Bulgarian skimmers.

  26. David;
AS I reasoned earlier on this Blog, it would appear that the strategy for managing the Vote of No Confidence was to ensure that it came before the GoCB’s third quarterly report. As another poster hinted, the overt strategy was for none of the Government members to comment.

Almost everyone felt that the Vote had no possibility of success so it was felt that the big foot move of not commenting would turn the tables on Mia.

    But Mia won the discussion.

She and the others who spoke were able to land a multiplicity of telling blows on CS’ credibility WITH NO REBUTTAL. The BLP will have for future use a number of clips that cannot fail to damn CS’s performance as MOF and the Government’s performance as managers of the island’s economy.

The Job Mia did was superb. The Strategy of the DLP did them no good as no one expected them to lose the vote.

  27. Would it not have been useful for government MPs and particularly the Prime Minister to use the opportunity provided by the Motion of No Confidence to update Barbadians on the timely rollout of projects (government capital works program)? He promises in the last Budget debate that he would chair a Cabinet Sub-committee to oversee the timely rollout. This is the kind of constructive feedback which would go a long way to allay the concerns of many. Does anyone care?

  28. David; Yes it would have been useful and traditionally effective to do as you have said above but the FS led DLP appeared to be on shaky ground there. Outside the 2 Sandals there does not appear to have been anything substantive that would have seriously engaged the PM in his capacity as chair of the new Cabinet sub-committee on implementation. So the strategy was trickery. Also, if the Government sticks to its policy of no layoffs of Public Servants there would be no money for operating expenses for much of the capital works programme or for special projects such as the Road works (Seen how few workmen are on the unfinished road projects these days?) Workers are being paid to twiddle their thumbs.

  29. The outcome of today’s No Confidence was expected with the ruling party having the edge due to numbers. However, the strategy of the Dems was to refrain from talking since the more you talk, the more fuel for the opposition. What is angering me is the alleged statement by the MoF regarding threat to his life. Who de hell he is trying to fool. That political trick will eventually backfire and burn Barbados reputation as being violent. People would not waste time in committing any act against a failure who submit a poorly conceived budget that was backed by a class of under-achievers. What we should be looking at is the downward slide of the country with only a 13-week cheque to play with. What a weak forex position.

  30. Instead of he MoF abusing parliamentary privileges by stating about a threat against his life, he should be in the PAC offices lodging serious complaints against the senior police officer who had to be in close hearing distance of the two alleged conspirators and who failed to apprehend them. Ah wonder who lying.

  31. Excellent pieces Tell Me Why and checkit out.

Did the police over hear this conversation by passing or is by wire tapping? You see why this DLP had to make the changes in the RBPF?

This shoot talk was a distraction. Stinkliar knew that the Governor was bringing grim news of the the economy. Looking at CS as he was revealing this plot, one could tell the buffoon was lying. You mean to tell me no one aint threaten Leroy Parris and people would threaten a buffoon?

I agree with you TMW, the strategy will backfire. And they talk about Mia scaring off investors! With the increase in crime and violence and now this, would this not scare potential investors rather than anything he perceives that Mia says?

  32. In all seriousness, does anyone believe that any of Dem wanted to defend Chris Stinkliar? They could not in all good conscience!

  33. After the Mottley attempt to pollute the airwaves and minds of Barbadians who as recently as 8 months ago elected a DLP Govt that to this day Mottley is unable to come to grips with, she still believes that like some of her past history that she can beat and bite people into naked submission, it aint wukking round here Mottley.

Actually this display today now leaves me even morer convinced that someone like Toppin or Symmonds will waste no more time with having this fumbling Jackass leading them or that party, they could do a much more effective and measured job with greater political outcomes than Mottley is doing, today will certainly clearly show that her back up support is seriously lacking not a senior member of the blp opposition rose to assist her cause in her Motion today.

  34. Maybe Arthur was right all along when he said she was unfit to lead and when Philip Goddard confirmed to the USA Ambassador that the party would never allow her to lead the party of the BLP of which he is a member.

  35. “Do you believe the comment made by the MOF in parliament today that his life is under threat as he was told by a member of the RBPF Intelligence arm that two persons where overheard threatening to shoot him”.

just another attempt like Mr Jones’ threat to Principals and Unions to carry divisiveness to a higher level as has been done with the successful introduction and use of the party passport system as an integral part of party strategy.

  36. how about them shots fired from the guns of the senior members of the opposition directed at MIA. who took umbrage in putting silencer on their mouths,

  37. @Tell me more

Do you agree a lot may have changed in the mind of the electorate since the general election?

  38. Someone who has expressed concern about Mr Sinckler’s bulldoggish type responses to criticism of his stewardship asked me to post thus;

What Peter tells me about Paul tells me more about Peter than it tells me about Paul (Sigmund Freud-1856-1939)

” I made one comment that was not even gender specific. If I had asked the question if own Arthur was leader of the Opposition, who would have risen in righteous indignation and say I was abusing men? Not a fella! I am being targeted because some felt I should join a bandwagon to oust Prime Minister Freundel Stuart. I would not besmirch my integrity to get involved in skulduggery and attack the Honourable Prime Minister of Barbados.” (Chris Sinckler- Ricky Jordan article October 21, 2013.)

Now Ms Mottley has been in Parliament for almost 20 years and happens to be the Honourable Opposition Leader of Barbados so therefore you have besmirched your integrity by the comment. Furthermore, you on previous occasions have made disparaging remarks about the President of the Barbados Secondary Teachers’ Union . Ms Mary Redman and Mrs June Fowler. Hence your outbursts do seem gender specific.

As for Mr Arthur, he was the Honourable Prime Minister of Barbados for 14 consecutive years (1994-2008) arguably the most bountiful period in the history of elective politics and the widest election victory (26-2). So to say that he would be seeking attention would be laughable.

Is it the Mottley crew or the Eager 11 who feel that you should join the bandwagon to oust Prime Minister Stuart.

Mia in her typical style hogged the show causing 3 or 4 opposition MP’s including OSA to leave Parliament before the vote. Mia is quite lucky that others within the BLP were able to encourage them to turn around, return to Parliament and vote in support of the the motion.

  41. Is it not a shame that Barbadians could not have been treated to a robust debate on the issues confronting the Nation. On most if not all resolutions debated we are treated with monotonous and tedious deliveries. Instead political tactics continue to trump democratic principles.

  42. Too much to hide, too many politicians involved in too many scams, too many of them know too much about each others involvement in scams against the taxpayers’ money, too many interlocking relationships, therefore the island has to sink or all the information will come out for the public to digest. You are playing politics again. There is only one person that appoints and disappoints to the Cabinet, the Prime Minister. The motion of no confidence was a cheap and thinly veiled gimmick/attempt by the Leader of the Oppostion to force the PM’s hand, one way or another in relation to Sinckler.

Why did she bring before the GoCB’s 3rd Quarter report? These politicians really taking Barbadians for fools.

There was no need for debate, the House has far more important matters to deal with than political gimmicks and after all the whole of Barbados knows, especially after everything yesterday, that the present Minister of Finance has been, is and will continue to be a total failure in terms of managing the economy and financial affairs of this country.

The Prime Minister now had a very hard decision on his hands cause cannot leave the MOF and the economy to the ravages of Chris Sinckler and longer, so he MUST either take that portfolio himself or alternatively give it to Dr. David Estwick.

Whom do you blame for the breakdown in the opposition’s 22 point charge? Certainly it can be no fault of the Government if no more than 3 opposition members saw it fit to lend their voice to the debate …why dont you admit that Miss Mottley was again guilty of very poor judgment with regard to her standing within her own party !
