Adrian Loveridge – Owner of Peach & Quiet Hotel

In the first week of this month a mission left Barbados for Macau, a special administrative region of China to attend the 13th International Indian Film Awards (IIFA) ceremony, which took place on 5th July. Headed by Minister of Culture, the Hon. Stephen Lashley, this public and private sector delegation was the brainchild of the Barbados Chamber of Commerce and Industry and intended to hopefully bring the event to our shores next, or in a future year.

Macau, like many of the other venues where the function has been staged is an extremely difficult act to follow. By reclaiming the land between two islands, a Las Vegas in the Orient was created which boasts so many attributes. Including the world’s largest casino, the Venetian Hotel with its 3,000 suites and a conference facility that can seat 15,000 people theatre style. This year’s anticipated global television audience was estimated at 800 million and that’s before you add YouTube and all the other social media sites and conventional media coverage.

I am sure all those involved in the evaluation did a great deal of research prior to the visit, as clearly there are some real challenges if Barbados is successful in securing any bid. For instance, when IIFA 2012 took place in Singapore, the attending actors alone occupied over 400 rooms in the Grand Hyatt Hotel. We then have to think about the Awards ceremony itself, which has attracted up to 3,000 attendees . Currently our largest meeting facility at LESC can only accommodate around 1,200 to 1,400 people seated in a single space.

According to the Sir Garfield Sobers Sports Complex website, they can hold ‘approximately 4,500 to 5,000 persons.’ But would this number be seriously compromised when taking into account the space needed for what can only be described as the ‘normal’ spectacular opening show. Is it time to look seriously again at solving the environmental issues at Needhams Point, then take the plunge to build a truly world class conference centre there. I bounced this off a diehard ruling party supported recently, and his words were, oh! that was a BLP idea, it will never happen in the lifetime of this Government.

Frankly, should we care a damn, whose idea it was?

Was it a good idea or not?

Yes! the administration is currently cash strapped, so is there another way?

What would be wrong with an entirely privately funded ,owned and operated facility. Our construction magnates have been very vocal about state sponsored projects drying up. How many workers could be employed on the clean up and constriction?  And is there a creative way we could harness major players like Sir Kyffin Simpson and the SOL group of companies in the endeavour through tax efficient inducements? Ultimately the trickle down effect generated by a new meeting centre would benefit the entire tourism sector and many others. It could also play a critical role in the revitalisation of Bridgetown and piggyback off the potential benefits driven from World Heritage status.

We have already lost significant business share in the convention and incentive market to Trinidad. As room stock and airlift rapidly increases in neighbouring St. Lucia, are we just going to wake up one morning and find they have stolen the next thunder, having completed a similar complex to that in Port of Spain.

    No.That is your problem.

Well, then, sir…tell your government to PAY UP WHAT THEY OWE! Just like the rest of us have to.

  4. Adrien why YOU ALWAYS SOUNDING like A PAUPER?

  5. adrien I noticed your silence on the ten point plan was deafening is it because you like what you heard or because of other reasons,,,,,in any event the voice of the tourist industry Mrs Bass gave her approval…the ten point plan most interesting falls along the same avenues as those which you have been supporting , correct me if I am wrong.

ac, the discussion of possible APD Voucher scheme BEFORE implementation is (in my opinion) a huge mistake. You have virtually told the Brits including the travel trade to hold off booking ANY holiday to Barbados until details of the vouchers have been made known. the 5 per cent rebate in electricity and water, would be welcome, BUT after a 72 per cent and 60 per cent increase in these utilities. And then of course a 50 per cent increase in land taxes and 16.6 per cent in VAT. Nothing there to make any immediate difference.

………………………………………………………………………………………………………….adrien wouldn’t you concede that the strategy was one for long term and it is up to the hoteliers to make full use in order to see a difference,,,

    ac,
I would agree that of course LONG TERM should be the objective, but the hoteliers currently cannot afford to think long term. They do not have any money. The damage to viability has already been done and it’s now time to implement policies that aid short to medium term recovery and help return the industry to profitability. The 10 Point Plan certainly doesn’t do that, even if it was implemented tomorrow.

  9. Has LESC found out what the customer requires and if they can provide that at a profit?

  10. Adrien understood So is the govt ! ,what the govt is doing is likened to planting several seeds across different ground in different areas but like a seed it takes time , to grow . however the reality is that some might produce harvest and others might die, the govt now have put plans in place having limited resources but it is also important for those in the hotel industry who are seeing hard times to plant a couples seeds of their own and not sit idly by and do nothing. I meaning the internet is a great place for planting and it cost nothing.

    ac,

The trouble is the seeds the Government are planting are genetically modified and largely sterile. I agree about the Internet, so why isn’t the cash strapped Government using it to better advantage? Just how long does it take to prepare and issue an effective Tourism MasterPlan or restructure the BTA and would that cost more than the close to average $90-$100 million the BTA gets each year. Let alone what it costs to fund the Ministry of Tourism.
I have agreed many times the hotels and tourism industry has to do more, but so does a bloated Government and Civil Service.

  12. adrien I do not agree with you that the govt not using the internet. I have read and seen many ads on many international websites news and other media outlets including social networks promoting Barbados not to mention great reviews in news articles to mention CNNtravel and others.on that point we must disagree . However back to my premise that being, that the hoteliers owned their business they have ioo% ownership and it is imperative solely by them with whatever help the govt can offered to be responsible for the highs and lows of their business across the board. Hand outs can only go so far but the bottom line is dollar and how owners are willing to work to self promote their business, In the long run it is their livelihood , it is their blood and sweat that first made it all come about. the govt is only a spring board but not a solution to their problems. I have yet to see or hear of any real interest in Tourism that is geared bringing in middle income tourist and that is an hole left opened one that the small hotelier can go after through advertising by internet, not a govt responsibility For sure only the high end of the spectrum has garnished the spotligh t,only recently a well known person and once highly regarded in the tourism industry came close to speaking on such point in stating that High end Tourism is dead, maybe he does have a point.
Until the hoteliers understand their role as OWNERS and the role which govt play that of assisting, the back and forth would continue, First Defining each ones part is crucial to meaningful dialogue which determines success or failure in the long Long TERM/

    ac,
please list all your personal hands-on experience that you have had, owning and operating ANY type of tourism business. Mine is a matter of public record and after 47 years, I feel I have a reasonable understanding of the industry which has not been gleaned from an armchair.
IF the BTA were using the Internet so successfully, don’t you think this would be reflected in the arrival figures?

  14. Adrien why the sensitivity ,I for one was not pointing fingers in any ones direction. in regards to handouts although hand outs are public knowelge and on record,
the premise of my comment was one of personal responsibility and how it can impact a business long term dictating its failures or success.
Have it ever crossed YOUR MIND that “IF” noticed your word not mind (meaning without full knowledge or facts) “IF” the govt was not using the internet to a greater extent the decline would be more devastating , However it further points the finger of greater responsibility on the hoteliers part in filling those holes which govt might have missed or fallen short,,, it is time for hoteliers to STEP up to the plate .

  15. Adrian Loveridge Avatar

    ac,

the sensitivity is that you brand ALL hoteliers in the same vane. I cannot recall the number of times I have stated some hoteliers have to do more and that in 25 years of actually owning and operating a tourism business (not just talking about it) we have never received a single cent from Government. You also chose to forget that WE (most hotel owners) are investing our OWN money and as hotel owners have made the largest investment and commitment to Barbados. Is it not fair that we should expect some return on the BDS$100 million we are providing the BTA with, this year alone?

  16. @ Adrien can you for one moment take your personal feelings out of the picture and draw on the premises and salient and relevant points that I have made about all sharing the same responsibility ,rather than having a specific role as players individually . your constant harping about :self” only reinforces what outsiders believe or perceives about hoteliers that is that they are selfish and inconsiderate( not all) but it is a growing reality.
There comes a time when instead of one beating the drum of “poor men” come out and take a look at others who are in far worse position.
Yes adrien I am pointing such a finger at You cause more and more everyday you bring out the “poor ‘us” or poor me card for what it is worth there are no titles or sub-titles awarded to any individual or entity ,,We all in this quadmire together and it is only fair that ALL those who have a vested interest in the survival of the country do diligence and not expect others whether be govt or taxpayers to do the most.
I know Your response would be by telling me how hard you work to achieve but that same advice you should share among your peers as a need and and a guide for survival . Enough is enough, We have heard your story now is the time to distributed it to those in the hotel industry who are on the downside of the economic scale,
I wish this conversation was on a more friendlier note .however it tried in my earlier comments to focus on personal responsibility , However for one reason or another who threw out a golden opportunity and refocus the issue on “Self” just remember it is not about ONE it is about ALl.

  17. Seems like after taking a big bite out of the Civil servants you have disapeared .Not Good. adrien perceptions are not a good thing to plant in peoples mind

  18. Adrian Loveridge Avatar

    ac,
I felt that I was fighting a losing battle.
If you mean ‘big bite out of Civil servants’, means comparing people that barely ‘work’ a 40 hour week and make little or no investment with others who work 17 hours a day, 7 days a week, I stand guilty as charged.
It is not perceptions, it’s reality. When our hotel was open, I knew that when we re-opened in November that my next day off wouldn’t be until April the following year. Of course, with that sort of commitment are you really surprised that we become sensitive with what appears sometimes as glib, ill-informed comments?
As a hotelier, I can only speak with absolute authority about myself, just as you would only be able to do in whatever trade or profession you are in. But your observations about hoteliers generally, are so far removed from THIS one, they are insulting. Do the job, take the responsibility and then come back with objective opinions based on facts and proven experience, not just armchair rhetoric.

Note that LIAT’s CEO agreed with you this morning about load factor.

    David,

At last someone agrees with me!!!!
I thought Captain Brunton came over very credibly this morning and a role model example to many others, both in the private and especially the public sector.

  21. @Adrian

Another point which he made which seem to be left by Wickham is the fact LIAT has had to bring in contract workers because appointed staff has been unwilling to step up during the transition period. The result more money to be spent.

Do you know who is this Barbados-based “change-agent” company engaged by LIAT to turn around the management and work culture in that airline?
Is Dr. Jean Holder in any way associated with it?

  23. @adrien …You have made a statement that the civil servants are lazy…… i have made several statements that the hoteliers falling on hard times should be pro-active and step up along with govt help to save their business. my observation and comments are based on what you have stated that the small hoteliers are struggling…now please explain what are the facts to corrobate the lazy comment about the CS and also what does one issue have to do with the other.

  24. @Miller

No but there is time for it to come out in the wash.

That’s ac’s MO. As soon as she is exposed as a fraud she reverts to personal attacks (ad hominems).
You are lucky she can’t refer to you as “NEGRO”. But she will find something to throw at you like: ‘You Adrian don’t like women or blacks’.

Just ignore her, the miller will be your Uncle Tom (LOL!!) to put her in her intellectual place.

  28. Do you not understand the context of asking the CS to do more…….and compariing there lack of investment as one that should be on the same level of Private investors. Maybe you believe that your play on words are appropriate towards a Class of people who have invested their share by way of taxes.which benefitted the hoteliers for many years should go unnoticed… now if i may ask what more would You want the CS to do.?

  29. Adrein you can run and dodge all you like . but the truth is that your comment about theCS was uncalled for and unwarranted. How quckly we forget that a lot of what the hoteliers once enjoyed as big govt subsidies and still is enjoying maybe on a smaller scale was partially because of the taxes payed into the system by those workers . How selfserving can one be by those comments in particular by asking those lower class of workers to do more. More for who that is the answer adrien you ought to give , here is a class of workers who by any stretch of the imagination might be going through harder and more serious financial times given the living wage. Adrien it seems that it is O>K for you to use BU bully pulpit to attack others but it is beyond good reasoning and rationale to be asking the CS to do more MY QUESTION TO YOU IS DO MORE FOR WHO

  30. Adrien u still hiding an unrepentant of those flattering comments u may about the CS why don,t you do the right thing using “Bruggadon” s an example to clarify comments made in the same vein as yours ….It is a dam shame that a man of your stature would go so low as to pick on workers who are not responsible for the economic downturn.surely you must know better.

  31. No! i will not call YOU a racist .however i will call You out on such asinine comments which paints a whole working class as “useless” and not contributing any thing beneficial to the ecocomy while you have the mitigated gall to promote your side of the higher echeleon of this society as the hardest workers and most productuve earners of this economy which is selective thinking forgetting that the basket which they provided many of them beneffited substantially.

  32. Adrien u could ignore all u want but anytime u post an article ac would remid u of the gaffe u made demeanng thev CS as a bunch of free loafers who have not contributed anything to barbados………What a waste afterall u have regulated yourself to be a spoke person for all that is not right with barbados. not surprsing the CS is now listed on your menu.
