A copy of a dismissal letter received by a government worker dated 30 May 2013.

It seems our own Caswell Franklyn who heads Unity Workers Union has released the cat amongst the pigeons. Was there a plan to send home a large number of temporary government workers which was foiled when Caswell went public recently? Minister of Finance Chris Sinckler has been forced to deny there was such a plan. Maloney and Clarke from the NUPW have also denied that they were privy to any plan. Caswell has rebutted that after the initial plan was exposed the contingency plan seems to be the orderly release of temporary workers when their contracts expire.

During the just concluded general election campaign a key message from the Democratic Labour Party platform was that government jobs will be protected.

Who is lying? You be the judge.

What I cant understand is the triumphal esctacy by the blog owner and BLP yardfowls like onion, miller etc for people to be sent home. Arent these folks hard working citizens who deserve to work. You mean the yard fowls are overjoyed because it proves Malik and Owen ” right”. Right on what? GOB is correct in preserving public service jobs as long as feasibe. The Reverend Dr. John Holder recognizes the importance of keeping our people working. Onions and his minion miller however are happy on any news that a worker has lost his job. Dubious trade unionist Caswell jumps like Kadooment Day when he hears a worker is laid off. What a bunch of sick souls.

I think it’s about whether the population was told the truth about layoffs during the election or not. Looks like not to me.

  4. The government can send home workers if it wants. For months many have stated on BU that it must happen given the fact government is borrowing to pay salaries. DLP yardfowls were quick to draw the swords to say that the DLP was not sending home any workers.

The DLP during the just concluded campaign made it an issue, no government workers to go home. Less than 6 months after the election and workers, though temporary, with five years service to go home. The DLP so far is coming out as liars and opportunists and it will be part of their legacy.

  5. I think that government workers have been romanticized for too long about having a “job for life”. A previous commenter also made reference to the “right to work”. Statements like these often confound me, as even though there is a right to work in the Declaration of Human Rights, there is definitely no guarantee of work if the economic climate does not support it. The public sector in Barbados is heavy, and with our welfare democracy system providing so much freeness to our population, we can no longer superfluous jobs as a key aspect of our economy. Government should by no means be employing almost one-third of the labour force!

Christopher Sinckler stood up before an audience and looked them in the face and lied. Worse yet, without calling my name, he called me a liar. The evidence is now out for everyone to see: who is the liar, not me.

This person has been temporary for five years. The DEMS with much less service got their appointment letters on Election Day.

    Dems now, Dems again.

Sinckler is the biggest boldest lair in this country. one has to wonder if he really has plans to be PM someday. The man opens his mouth and lies just jump out.

what a sad bunch and a sad day for our country.

@ Caswell…you must remember who awarded these appointment letters on election day.A people that for some reason still see politicians as their Lords and Masters. One does not have to be a brain surgeon to realize that the bloated public sector is unsustainable,so that B or D the guillotine was bound to fall.Political gimmicky has been the trick in the trade of both parties. That it has worked and continues to work to the disadvantage of a people that claim to be the smartest in the region is where the discussion needs to begin.

  13. I will hold fast to my view about Sinkler. As head of an NGO he was vehemently opposed to the signing of an EPA and changed his mind completely after becoming a Minister. The die was cast

  14. If the contracts of temporary workers who have been employed for five years as in this case, can we assume that those hundreds of temporary workers contracted by Lowe’s Drainage Department will be sent packing as well? This is against a background a couple weeks ago the ministry of the environment was scrambling about for money to pay workers.

    David,

Do you think it would be helpful if Caswell posted the Terms and Conditions of the employment of Temporary Workers. I am sure there must be legislation and ILO guidelines.

  16. @prodigal have you read the scathing letter in the advocate that OSA sent to the NOw leader of the BLP lambasting her for political interfernce in ST Peters affairs and faulting MAM for not taking control of the HINCKSON PAYNE affair.

  17. Temporary workers sent home!!!?
That is TEMPORARY as in TEMPORARY???
    NOT PERMANENTLY as in TEMPORARY??
    or PERMANENTLY TEMPORARY??
    or TEMPORARILY PERMANENT?

RIGHT!!!! Now I got it !!

Dr. Love, I might be wrong, but are not the United States of America and Barbados both members of the ILO (International Labour Organisation). I am sure that Sir Roy could confirm.

  22. This is a lot of nonsense. It is also immature and unbecoming of Caswell ….somewhat like his AX position.
Temporary means “NOT PERMANENT”, “will come to an end” etc

It lowers the level of seriousness of the blog to be talking shite because a temp is terminated.

Secondly, it is OBVIOUS to all and sundry that unless some fundamental and creative measures are taken ….AND SOON, many PERMANENT (or who think they are permanent) employees will be going home too….. Or at least there will be no money left to pay them.

    In sum.
We are all on this boat called the Titanic whose bow is now at 30 degrees. In a little while, most of us will be drowning and Caswell is raising a big alarm because a fellow get chased out of the engine room…?

    Finally.
People laid off in Europe, Canada, USA, Grenada, St Lucia……
Anyone……ANYONE!…who actually believed the DLP when they said they would not be laying off people….and who have the guts to come here on BU and say so, will earn the eternal classification from Bushie of King of all Brass Bowls.

  23. Carson……………..you have some explaining to do, your name was called in tricking an old defenseless lady to vote for DLP promising to pay her light bill and months after the elections her electricity was cut off because of non payment of the promised to pay light bill for votes……….defend yourself.

  24. @Bush Tea

Yours is not the point and you know it.

The government has been preaching for the last year that it will protect jobs in the public service. It probably won the government using this message.

Secondly successive governments have been know to treat temporary workers as ‘permanent’ for years. In this case five years.

BU agrees with Caswell, the government needs to have an honest conversation and stop this back door move. It was just returned to office, it has a mandate so do what it has to do. A reminder that it won the integrity battle as well.

  25. Slightly different scenario, but public service “jobs for life” are no longer available in Canada and elsewhere.

    The following from http://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/politics/federal-public-servants-performance-reviews-to-lead-to-more-dismissals/article12183826/#dashboard/follows/

Federal public servants’ performance reviews to lead to more dismissals

Unionized federal public servants will have to undergo annual performance reviews that will lead to more of them being fired, the Harper government announced Tuesday.

The new directive will be hotly resisted by public-service unions, which will see such measures as yet another assault on unionized public servants from the Conservative government.

“We owe it to the vast majority of committed, hard-working public servants to make sure everyone is pulling their weight,” a government official told The Globe and Mail on background before the announcement. “Either poor performers improve and become productive employees or we will let them go.”

What a novel idea – performance reviews with consequences

    Why not in Barbados?

  26. Well Well

CCC will not defend that. He is a crass politician! That is how they bought the election. A similar scenario was played out in St Michael North West and a lot of the people’s utilities have been turned off. CCC should be ashamed to show his face on BU today.

  27. I thought it would be a given that there would at least be bi-annual or annual reviews, in my experience there were always quarterly reviews of employees performances. That is what you get when it’s all about politics and party affiliations, mediocrity.

  28. Prodigal…………obviously Carson did not know we found out, small wonder he was gleefully calling for BU to be shut down before we found out……….the longest day Carson………………….

  29. Dems are unbelievable people!

They built their campaign on……….not one single person will be sent home. The BLP will send home 10,000 public workers………………the BLP will stop old people from riding free on Transport Board buses……

You Dems cannot come on BU now and say that Bees are rejoicing that public workers are losing their jobs. We are just pointing out what liars you Dems are. You had to win an election at all costs….so don’t come here now and claim that people are losing their jobs all over the world. That is a non point. You did not claim that before the election, you Dems guaranteed the public workers their jobs. Too late for the public workers, they believed your lies and now they have to pay for voting DLP.

What a bunch of pathetic liars you all are!

  30. Cuhdear David
When will the time come – that we recognize what it is that really confronts us?
How much store do you place on the fact that “government has been preaching that it will protect jobs….”
That was just shit talk David….
Did you not look in their eyes when they said those things?
    Steupssss….
…the same damn look was in Owen’s eyes when he spoke of bringing prosperity back….with stimuli

Caswell is Bushie’s own boy…. But these personal vendettas that he tends to hold on to will be his undoing. Caswell needs to let go of this personal “last hit”, back and forth, with people like Sinckler…
…it was the same with Broomes – because Jeff has dissed him (LOL)
This man Caswell still do not realize what a resource he can be to this country….THAT IS THE REAL ISSUE.

Focusing on such a petty issue as OBVIOUSLY NEEDED LAYOFFS, in the face of the CALAMITY that awaits this place IS NOT AN ISSUE…with all respect David.

    “stepuse…”
that is what we expected from u…cannot offer anything because u and other asses have now realized that u have been duped. it means that long before election day, they were planning on sending off many workers. sorry for the persons who worked faithfully but do not belong to any political party and is temporarily employed.

  32. @Bush Tea

    No easy pass here.

This government will be held to account.

Either poor performers improve and become productive employees or we will let them go.”

    ******************
Because the high performers (based on objective performance review methods) will not correlate properly with ‘kith and kin’, outside women, and politician’s friends…..

Besides, 96% of those at the level where such decisions would need to be taken KNOW that they would underperform in such reviews and be found wanting….

Can you see now why such a decision is NOT TAKEN…? 🙂

  34. This government will be held to account

  36. Another big whopper delivered from the minister of finance….just like ….Barrack will be paid soon……CLICO matter will be solved soon….
now he is promising that government will pay those whom they owe in three months time. He did not tell the businessmen where this money will come from when he faces a huge shortfall in revenue every month and has to borrow every month to pay salaries and wages.

Anyway if Stinkliar actually pays up, I may be lucky to get my tax refund from 2011. Tell us Mr Sincklar, where you will get this money from…….

Again I ask , where is the problem?

  44. Need them to get back in power after 5 years, don’t need them to get back in after ten, why keep them?…………..

Carson, you did not answer me about the old lady who says she was tricked into voting DLP, what’s up with that?

  45. Temp
    until appointed
    dismissed at
    whim and fancy- No
    Stop apolloshitsing for Govt’s folly

  46. Temporary & permanent government employees lost their jobs under the last Barbados Labour Party administration.
It is unfortunate that the officer contract was not renewed. The could be a myriad of reasons why the contract was not renewed.
The last Barbados Labour Party adminitration prior to the 2008 general election padded the public service with the creation of a high volume of temporary posts. Many of these posts were not needed but were created to provide employment for the supporters of the Barbados Labour Party in the hope that they support could have caused that despicable party to retain power.
David of BU is an incredible individual. He is at the forefront in his calls for this government to reduce government expenditure.
If unneccessary temporary posts that were created by the immoral, corrupt and despicable Barbados Labour Party previous administration headed by the despot Owen Arthur have to be unfortunately abolished.so as to reduce government expenditure, then it will be done.
These are some of the hard decision this administration is prepare to take.
David of BU,Caswell Franklyn and the other BLP lackeys on this blog,The Democratic Labour Party is the government of Barbados and all of you will have to continue to gripe, criticize and complain for the next five (5) years.
We in the great Democratic Labour Party will continue to do what is best for this country.

  47. –And the Democratic Labour Party will pay for the Lies
    Missed the point –Asshole !!

  48. If the DLP knows what is best for this country, why the hell did you liars not tell the people this prior to and during the election campaign? This current DLP bunch are the worst of the worst….incompetent, lied and deceitful!

Great DLP what???? That great party died with Errol Barrow! This DLP bunch has no shame, no qualms about lying to win at all cost.

Losers……..have this country on its knees. We have a nincompoop for a finance minister who get on my TV telling people that he was shopping around for low prices for loans. Idiot………….when talking about loans, you talk about RATES not prices. Stinkliar is a jackass………….. you forgot that you have conducted this country’s finances so badly that we are in JUNK status!

    Unbelievable!!!

  49. Well Well

Carson is on BU but will not say a word about the poor old lady that he and Steve Blackett tricked to get her vote. He dont have to care about her again, they got the vote and he brags………….”We win”. Moron.

What bothers me is that the DLP used the taxpayers money to buy votes. Carson Cadogan told the lady’s son that the grant was exhausted. Can you imagine this? Carson Cadogan is listed as a deputy chairman of a constituency council. They have been using the constituency council monies to buy Christmas hampers, fruit baskets, in one instance they paid for a funeral, so why couldn’t Carson Cadogan pay the lady’s light bill out of the CC monies or out of his pocket and show some charity for a change instead of being so nasty all the time on BU.

Or even the Steve Blackett, he was the candidate. But you Dems like to spend the taxpayers monies, not your own. You people are priceless.

The Dems tried this trick with a lady in St Michael NW, she told them give her the money to pay her own bill since they asked her if she had any bills that needed paying, they walked away and left her. So they were not using their money, they were using up the Welfare grant!

Unbelievable! And the Dems are great for this country???? Give me a break!

  50. That is why they are now turning away welfare recipients they used up the welfare grants to buy the election, not they got what they paid for, they better not let their esteemed friends and the minority leeches on the island anywhere near that credit union money, if they don’t leave that money in the black community, they will get a hell of a lot more than they paid for or that they bargained for, this is beyond sleazy.
