Dr. Esther Byer-Suckoo, Minister of Labour and Social Security

No one loves the camera like Dr.Esther Byer-Suckoo, Minister of Labour.  While she seeks “every” photo opportunity possible to give the “illusion of progress” (which she is good at)  the Bajan unemployment rate continues to sky rocket.  She appears “GREAT FROM FAR” but as the head of the Ministry of Labour, however when you get “close” she is “FAR FROM GOOD”.  As an example her ministry has a total of (7) job postings in a country of approximately 270,000+ people…”something is not right”.

According to the Ministry of Labour’s website Dr. Esther Byer-Suckoo has stressed that her Ministry is “HOPING to be much more PROACTIVE, and start to institute some programmes that would allow Barbadians to take advantage of those opportunities when they come”.   Unfortunately the question then becomes “WHEN DR.BYER-SUCKOO, WHEN?” you had 4 years, the time to be proactive is GONE, and so is the “HOPE” in you coming from your St. George South Constituency.

According to the Ministry of Labour online stats unemployment in Barbados (which should be a primary focus of a Ministry of Labour) continues to rise with “NO REAL EFFORT, OTHER THEN PHOTO OPPORTUNITIES” coming from DR.BYER-SUCKOO .

Unemployment Labour Force (data from Ministry of Labour website):

Year    Total
2008    11.7%
2009    14.2%
2010    15.3%

But according to the DLP things are “Not that BAD in Barbados, and they are still HOPING”…… ”right, the DLP “wait and see” strategy?”

“ESTHER LOOK A CAMERA … ”

  1. The most dangerous place to be in Barbados is between a camera and Dr. Esther Byer-Suckoo…

  2. I hate this about politicians. It’s always: We plan to, we hope to, we aim to. Never: We have actually DONE something.
One was at the scene of the minibus accident in St. George this week talking about “We plan to do something about safety on our roads.” Hello, lawlessness, unsafe roads, bad driving habits, etc.
been going on on B’dos roads FOREVER and you are only now PLANNING to do something?
I’m not talking about any particular side either by the way, ‘cos they are all the same and they are all annoying to me.

  3. These unemployment figures are even higher than what has been reported. And was it not the Minister of Finance in the recent Estimates debate that talked about unemployment dropping and being now around 10%.??

You might want to make a distinction between the different types of unemployment. Also, the BSS is the reliable source for statistics, Labour doesn’t take the same approach to their stats. Can’t kill the doc. Underperformer, maybe, but shouldn’t be the scapegoat on this one. Let’s talk about her constituency performance…..

  5. Based on BU’s research here are the unemployment numbers for Barbados in a time series. To provide context we have listed the rates for our key source markets as well as the biggest and richest economy in the Caribbean.

You are familiar with the fact there is a lag indicator to factor if you want to compare the US number with that of Barbados?

Nothing has happened in the Ministry since before Rawle Eastmond was Minister of Labour. I don’t know if we can blame Dr. Suckoo for the failure in that ministry. It would appear that there is a conspiracy for the Ministry of Labour to fail. There has been no meaningful work coming out of that only a lot of long talk. They have taken years to get the Employment Rights Bill before Parliament and the nonsense that they came up with certainly does not worth the effort. It should be called the Employers Escape Clause Bill. The employers organization have exerted so much influence that the bill is almost entirely useless.

  13. @Caswell

What is the position with the Occupational Safety & Health Bill?

I hate this about politicians. It’s always: We plan to, we hope to, we aim to. Never: We have actually DONE something.

Not only the pols but also the top bureaucrats.
Heard today a PS from the Ministry responsible for Consumer Affairs saying that his ministry is in the “process of developing a policy for the consumer affairs department’. Now pray tell us how can a government department function for so many years without a policy or mandate. No wonder that sector is given the sobriquet “army of occupation”!

The Safety and Health at Work Act was passed in 2005, but it has not been brought into force for a number of reasons, but mainly because the Act gave workers certain minimum standards for work places but if the Act is brought into force the main offender would be the Government of Barbados because some of its workplaces are little more than pig pens; and because workers would now have a statutory right to refuse to work under dangerous conditions; they are now trying to water down that provision by making regulations to clarify the Act.

  16. All

When we view stats that compare Barbados to the US and the UK we allow our academically minded brains to get the best of us, very common bajan problem.

Often we assume Barbados are an apple and the US is an apple. This however is not the case. (Follow me on this) . We are still considered a third world developing nation, which means that when we saw (DLP) the global recession on the horizon we are small enuff as a economy to make proactive economic shifts with fiscal efficiency in mind, not the “lets go create a society nonsense coming from the DLP in years 1,2,3 of the recession….. “we cant afford another year to tell de truth”

“MAN CALL DE ELECTIONS WUNNA HURTING BAJAN FAMILIES”

  17. Between 2007 and 2010 the BARBADOS unemployment rate rose by 3.6%

Between 2007 and 2010 the T&T unemployment rate rose by 1.9%

What worries me as that we are slowing falling behind other Caribbean nations.

  18. @Rambling Rose

This is not a woman’s equality issue, just like they are good men that do a bad job, they are good women that also do a bad job. Dr.Esther Byer-Suckoo is just one of those women doing a bad job… so relax.
Lord knows we need more woman in government at all levels.

She is supposed to be my Parliamentary representative and I must say that following on from Sir Louis Tull and even a lesser mortal in Richard Byer, she is less/worse than a bad joke.

I am convinced that if the late Prime Minister David Thompson was still alive, she would have been Minister without Portfolio or no Minister at all,she is a pure joke as a representative for the people of St.George South. She is of no substance and less form.

Your article is plainly a poor attempt at a political hit job on the Minister.Maybe to help the struggling BLP candidate , you have decided to throw this hogwash at the blogosphere.
Your memory is either conveniently failing you or you are drowning in the sea of political sh**e talk. Owen Arthur neglected the constituency of St. George south to spite Louis Tull. I remember Tull lamenting the fact that his BLP government was ignoring the infrastructure of St. George South and now you have the gall to ask people to support the same BLP that ignore them. Voters, do not be fooled.
Dr. Esther Byer – Suckoo is intelligent (former Barbados Exhibition winner) ,caring and capable . She has consistently put the interests of her constituents first and I know many people who can attest to this fact, She is a woman from the community who after succeeding returned to her rural community and gave back instead of looking for big money in the US and Europe. She has always been about looking out for the people of St. George South and the good people of St. George South will support her again. A mother, friend and one of the most genuine people you will ever meet.
Keep pushing on Doc ! Your labour will be rewarded.

  21. “we are small enuff as a economy to make proactive economic shifts with fiscal efficiency”- wait Austin, you now fall of a spaceship- why did your beloved BLP that you worship not restructure the sugar industry after all these years – year 1,2,3,4,…..14, Where was the creative industries policy, where was the restructured, efficient public service for the 21st century, the housing, the environmental and recycling policy, alternative energy and the list goes on. Where were these things or you now conveniently decide to raise this issue?
Certainly during 1994 – 2008, we were small enuff then to make these shifts. How can you with a straight face talk about fiscal efficiency and then ask people to support all of our money being dumped in a hole in St. Andrew. It is the same people who will present themselves for the BLP at next election. No new thinking or blood.
Barbados is moving ahead despite the strong global economic winds-Barbados certainly is not falling behind the Caribbean. Jamaica , Antigua, St.Lucia, Dominica and other CARICOM countries are all in IMF programmes. Barbados is NOT and through the good management of this government in these tough times we have maintained significant import cover well above the accepted international norm while not butchering our social sector
I realise that you chose to highlight Trinidad which always benefits when there is an increase in the price of oil but has still found this international climate very challenging.
I beleive that BLP lackeys like you might be in for a big surprise when elections are called. Bajans can reason and the party that you support(BLP) has presented a very poor choice of candidates and proposed no solutions.
No matter what you say- St. George south going with de doc all the way.

  22. @austin

The purpose of the comparative is to show that in bigger and stronger economies they have been challenged with rising unemployment as well. To add to the problem the UK, US and CAN markets are key source markets for tourism and FDI.

  23. We are not as smart as we think Avatar
We are not as smart as we think

Fast food is unhealthy and expensive.

    Price of one Chicken Combo = $20.00 X 3 = $60 (one serving for family of 3)

Price of: small fillet of salmon trout – $25.00; small bag of rice – $5.00; bag of vegetables – $10.00; bottle of seasoning – $5.00; and some onions – $5.00 = $50 (two servings for a family of three)

We are not as smart as we think.

Of course, add a little time and energy, in the kitchen, for preparation, to the $50.

  25. No one loves the camera like Dr.Esther Byer-Suckoo, Minister of Labour
    +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

I think it is the other way around ….. the camera loves the Dr ……particularly if the camera is being operated by a man!!

Who wants to leave home to photograph some of the various faces politics throws up.

The Dr. is the most photogenic politician we have had for a long time ….. perhaps ever!!

  26. You seem to have something more to say…

  27. @ Austin—– I was checking to see where in the past you saw the same in one Noel Lynch? For the spotlight this man has an insatiable crave. The look of the Dr. gives her a face for the camera.Tell us exacly what is it with “Barny’s Big Boy” and his infactuation with the microphone?Perhaps its shape.

  28. The media could not get enough of this lady when she was first elected but when they realised that she is all fluff, have you not noticed she has to beg for coverage!

Good representative my foot, ask her branch assistant whom she fired days before Christmas 2011 what she thinks of her. I have friends and relatives in St George South and they all say they would never vote for her again. All these people who voted for change are sadly disappointed.

When she was first appointed minister, she ordered thousands of dollars in portraits, I wonder where they are now. Romeld, if the dead king was alive, she would have been on the back bench long time.

  29. @Prodigal Son
Yeah right- the first place you go to get an unbiased ,objective view of an employer is to an employee who was fired.Get real!
If treatment of persons with whom you work is an issue, ask many senior civil servants what they think of Owen Arthur who was known to even curse the poor maids and gardeners who worked at Bay street.

  30. @!

You do not give up do you? Do you work as diligent at your day job as you do on this blog defending the indefensible? Give it up man, are you afraid that your share of the fatted calf will be taken away by October?

The Dems came in with “I will not lie, steal or cheat”. Job 1,2 and 3 is cost of living. What happened?…… everything has skyrocketed and with no ease in sight. People are out of jobs for years now and you on this blog pushing crap about Owen Arthur.

I have a breaking news story for you. Owen Arthur is not PM, Freundel Stuart is, deal with the issues and stop bellyaching.

  31. Well Prodigal, I know you might not have heard but on planet earth many Western economies(Barbados included) have had to undergo economic adjustment over the past few years.
But all is not lost- there have been no layoffs in the Public sector, education has not been cut, health care has not been ccompromised, housing developments are ungoing, alternative energy solutions are implememted (Smart fund), new tourism markets are being sought. The list goes on.
We have a good government on the job Prodigal and I am sure that you know that thankfully, Barbados is till the best place in the Caribbean to live.

  32. Byer-Sucks is best descibed as a blonde.

  33. I almost fell out the chair when the BLP candidate in St. George South was complaing about the state of the roads.
From 1994 – 2007, St. George South was abandoned by the BLP with very little roadwaorks as Owen Arthur sought to punish Louis Tull.
The BLP candidate might not be familiar with how the roads came to be so bad but surely he would not now be trying to blame the good doctor Esther.
The poor state of roads in St. George South leads straight back to Owen Arthur who now comes to the same people for votes. The people of St. Geoge south will not be fooled by the BLP lies.
The BLP history of neglect in St. George South is there for all to see.

  34. The BLP St.George South candidate Dwight Sutherland is very focused on addressing the real world needs of the people of St.George South, not where the next camera is like Dr. Esther Byer-Suckoo .

Dwight Sutherland is a native son of SGS and knows the needs of the SGS community. Dr. Esther Byer-Suckoo “HAD 4 YEARS” to address the state of the roads issue in SGS.

    BU I have a prediction?:
Don’t be surprised if we see road works crews in SGS in the next few days/weeks with a news camera and Esther Byer-Suckoo cheesing or looking concerned … 🙂

    A

  35. Poor Austin- The facts show that the BLP ignored the roads in St. George South.
Over the last 35 years in St. George south, the BLP held the government for 23 years – 68%
St. George South had a BLP representative for 26 years out of the last 35 years – 74.28 %
It is clear the state of the roads in St. George south has to be blamed on the BLP. The inept BLP candidate should come clean with the people. Owen Arthur put petty personal politics above the development of St. George south. The voters will not be fooled by the spin. The facts of the BLP neglect of the people of St. George south is plain for all to see.
In case you did not know Dr. Esther is born and raised in St. George South. While many went overseas following the big bucks and consultancies, she came back to her roots. That is genuine commitment and she is genuine.

  36. Caswell Franklyn Avatar

    !

A lot of what you said is absolutely correct. Owen Arthur did try to punish Louis Tull by neglecting St. George South but that is water under the bridge. It is also commendable that Dr. Suckoo, who was born in St. George South, came back to her roots to rather than go overseas to follow the big bucks. However, she is trained as a medical doctor and if she really wanted to serve her community, she should have stuck to medicine. She is clearly out of her depth as a politician: an area where she has absolutely no aptitude. Mind you that can be said for about 20 members of the House on either side of the divide.

  37. The other day I when on my computer and listened to a campaign speak given by dr.suckoo in 2007.,,, many things she spoke about against her opposition she has become guilty of in the last 4 years, go to youtube and listen for yourself.

  38. Byer Sucks is the very poor as a politician but it woudl be said that she is a female and that Owen Arthur administration doe snot hold women in very high esteem (a big farce by the way). The woman is clearly incompetent and it is clear for all to see. I live in SGS and she has no idea about anything
