It seems a commonsense position that as human beings we should place a heavy priority on what we eat. We should eat good food to ensure healthy minds bodies. On those occasions when we fall sick we should feel confident that drugs prescribed can be trusted. More and more the entry of genetically modified foods to the market with Monsanto being a big supplier has become a concern. On the other side of the coin we have Big Pharma which uses a profit motive to manufacturer drugs.

Sometimes we ask ourselves if local authorities are aware of the threats pose by questionable food and drug manufacturing practices.

  1. I do believe that we the people have been sadly ignorant about a lot of things…perhaps this is where we can praise technology…! Today I was made aware of a small video on UTube basically telling me what I have known all along re pharmaceuticals…these companies working almost hand in hand (not surprisingly) with some food companies…bad food = bad health = bad pharmaceuticals = great financial gains. Think about it.

Let us start with foods. Through books and technology I have learned what is going into our foods, and many (most?) times its all the bad stuff that affects our health…and naturally when our health deteriorates, we go to the doctor and what does he prescribe? ….pharmaceuticals – sometimes medicine that we never can get off of… sadly enough. Of recent I came across a UTube link of a woman who was in the pharm business and left because she realized she was harming people more than helping…on that particular site I then went on to link into several others that cemented what I already knew about the dangers of MANY ‘legal drugs prescribed by doctors’.

This by the way is not the doctors fault, they are trained that pharms. are good for us. But one thing I have noticed is that I cannot remember once going to a doctor who sat me down and gave me a good talking to, or a pamphlet that described to me exactly what is good food versus bad food, and if I stuck to the good ones then I would probably not need pharms…all my doctors have always given me that lovely piece of white paper with a scribble that only the pharmacist seems to be able to decipher but ask the pharmacist (or your doctor) exactly what this medicine contains…and the details seem to elude them or if they do not, the explanation will take up far too much time and time is their bread and butter.

Now this does not mean that we should all run to our local ‘nature’ store and purchase a myriad bottles of pills or potions because that is big business too. And I mean big business. I know one medical doctor in Jamaica for instance who has become extremely wealthy on becoming the regional representative for a ‘healthy lifestyle’ product whose founder died of a raas heart attack at an early age and people still did not seem to get the message!!! Laughable!

What are the answers?…quite simply my mind boggles…but a healthy lifestyle (organic foods and exercise) is probably about the only thing that can stop these greedy nasty humans from climbing the ladder of success on the back of us very very stupid people.

@David…perhaps you could put up that little video I sent you, and maybe as this blog continues, some of the others found on that same page of UTube. And may God (if he has not already given up on us and moved right along to another planet) help us!!

The video above is the one.

Here is a relevant link on World Bank concerns about rising prices.

  3. I am sorry to say: Monsanto has got the upper hand and I personally think there is little we can do about it. Monsanto has been allowed to carry on for far too long without being challenged.
Monsanto ‘genes’ are deeply engraved in most foods!
We can all try organic farming, but it cannot be totally organic with our neighbours using spays. There is residue of some kind in the water, the air we breathe and in the food/ vegetables we eat.
Only Monsanto knows what’s in that lovely piece of beef, potatoes, bread, rice.
No government is going to take on Monsanto. It is too powerful; it has plenty of money which buys influence and it employs a great number of people. Big businesses will protect each other; they invest in each other companies. Governments will come and go; people will live and die; Monsanto will live on.
Please don’t get me wrong! I would love to see that day when we can reverse the trend.

  4. Monsanto is pretty powerful. It apparently even has the president of the United States of America in its back pocket.

Big Agra and big Pharma rule in Washington

President Obama and corrupt USDA approve their buddy Monsanto’s alfafa GMO against the wishes of the majority of Americans, the pleas of farmers and the better judgement of scientists

President Obama has unbelievably chosen to approve two biotech crops, Monsanto’s Roundup Ready genetically modified (GMO) alfalfa and Roundup Ready genetically modified (GMO) sugar beets. They will be planted as early as this spring, despite widespread acknowledgement that these crops are certain to contaminate both conventional and organic farmers’ non-GMO crops. The deregulation of GMO Roundup Ready alfalfa could lead to the genetic contamination of all conventional and organic alfalfa within five years.

    SNIP

Alfafa is a perennial legume that does not have to fight weeds as do corn, soybeans, cotton or canola. Ninety-three percent of the alfalfa hay in the U.S. does not use any herbicides. As a perennial legume, it does not suffer from the same weed pressures as other crops, such as corn, soybeans, cotton and canola. GMO alfalfa will only lead to an increase of glyphosate-resistant superweeds. The USDA’s Vilsack backed by Obama ruthlessly choose to ignore the basic biological principles of pollination and good agricultural practices. Industrial agriculture, far from being the salvation it promises, is actually undermining the resource base–healthy soil, clean water, and diversity of plants and animals–needed to sustain the world’s growing human population in the long term.

This decision undermines opportunities for farmers in America, particularly in important export markets for conventional alfalfa and in the growing organic dairy industry. It also severely restricts the choice of farmers and 50 million U.S. consumers who every day exercise their right to consume food that is certified organic and free of GMOs, that are yet to be proven safe for human consumption and our common environment, because all previous studies have shown that they are not. Genetic food engineering is the most powerful and pernicious technology known to man and yet it is being released throughout our environment with contempt for the multiple ethical issues it raises and the irreversible harm it will bring to life on earth as we know it.

Hundreds of thousands of petitions were signed, scientists from all over the world warning of the end of free choice agriculture as we know it and the onset of serious irreversible negative health and sustainability consequences. To be sure, no one in Washington, the least Mr. President, gives a dam about the politely worded petitions.

Why then, when it is obviously not good for us, is it being approved? Well for Greed. It is good for Monsanto, and what is good for Monsanto is even better for the hundreds of politicians and government employees who are directly or indirectly on the big Pharma and big Agro (one of the same) payroll.

The FDA and the USDA have become the legislative and executive branches of Monsanto, Bayer, Dow and the likes . When you look at all the Monsanto executives who have gone through the revolving door between private industry and government oversight, you uncover the truly disturbing picture of America today.

  5. @Green Monkey
    an alfhole.
Breeding, monoculture and cloning of perrenials is practiced here in Barbados in canes too, to name but one. Address local rather than always painting pictures that demonise those who you hate. Genetic engineering is also acceptable to many persons who know that aout which they speak, yet hold their peace when they read you, or who choose not to read. An article that says that a “majority in the US do not appprove of alfalfa” is opinionated, to say only the least, but it is actually a single op-ed. It is not truth. A majority in the US abd Barbados find “choose it from outer space, cut and snip from the fringe” objectionable too, but that’s subject to anuddah op-ed somewhere on the internet. Genetic engineering is good, and should be used responsibly. Selective breeding and cultivation of crops is good in this none’s opinion- you can’t feed the billions expanding to billions more unless you do it. The alternative is death for some of those billions. What do you say about that, and what is your solution to feeding those billions under your regime? Go eat your computer?
