George Pilgrim, General Secretary, Democratic Labour Party

I can’t imagine how history will record this period in the political life of the Barbados Labour Party. The current impasse has begged the question of whose interest are the current machinations taking place. My limited knowledge of what takes place in Roebuck Street has guided me to make some assumptions.

1. Owen and George Payne reached a private accommodation.

2. Owen intends to see that back of the BLP elites broken.

3. Owen does not care what the status quo in the party is thinking.

4. Owen has had a change of heart about being leader.

When taking the above assumptions into consideration, I am led to believe that Owen has promised Payne something big, whenever the BLP retains power [whenever that is]. This relationship is puzzling as we ponder on the historical relationship of the two individuals. We all appreciate that BLP politics is  viewed as a convergence of interests where minds meet for a stake in the bigger pie. In this scenario, we have witnessed the deafening silence of Owen, the man at the centre. However, he has managed to have  all knives and arrows  pointing towards Mottley and Payne.

There is something in this political equation that is fundamentally telling.  How does Owen, the principal  of the spectacle, stay so quiet and unnoticed? The BLP’s factions are calling for Payne to be pulled in line while others are saying that Mia should step aside and let Owen take over. Owen Arthur has been able to get two of his known party adversaries to go after each other in public.

Now that is where the coup is occurring!!!

With one swoop, Arthur will perform political annihilation on his two obstacles. Come on Labourites, you have got to look into the forest and separate the wood from the trees.  It is clear that Owen is of the view  that his legacy is under threat by the status quo. It’s no secret the way Arthur treated the party stalwarts during his tenure. The likes of Sir Richard, Sir Louis, Dame Billie and of course Lionel Craig, who was later honoured during this current administration’s tenure, have all suffered under his tongue. Arthur’s reign did not only come to an end with the loss at the polls, but the elites saw it as an opportunity to purge themselves of his posture. A posture they tolerated because they understand what politics and interest meant at that time.

Owen does not care for the views of the elites of the party. He did a number to attain the job as Opposition Leader; that episode is a matter of public record. Once Sir Henry Forde fell for the drama, Owen was able to begin dismantling the status quo, as he found it. The gradual redefining of the BLP in the image of Arthur was his next project. He kept the ones close to him that he thought would do the most damage, hence we saw where the darlings on the BLP were located, as his deputies. The tone with which the only comment from Arthur came regarding the leadership issue, was that he was trying to be civil about the matter. When one peels back what he was saying it reminded me of what David Banner would say in the picture The Incredible Hulk.  “ Mr McGee, don’t make me angry. You wouldn’t like when I am angry.”

On the matter of being leader, I think that the comments by Arthur in the past regarding his disinterest must be seen in context. I don’t think he is the type of guy who lets on what his intentions are too early. Even if he has intended actions, he will defer the announcement until the time is right. But you can always tell when he is up to something [check his short grin].  There can be no doubt that at the back of Arthur’s mind [way back] he genuinely believes that he can be Prime Minister of Barbados again.

This belief however, will have to square with the wishes of his party people on conference day. I think on this occasion, he played his hand badly. The elites of the party will make life very difficult for Arthur . He has experienced what it was like to have cooperation in government but that was because they had a goal post. In opposition, the issue will be survival of the BLP, as an institution and the elites have already accepted responsibility for the preservation of their party. These are the guys that built the walls of the empire that Arthur came and found. But Arthur does not and will never share their outlook. Arthur was recruited into the fold of the BLP to do a job but he saw an opportunity and ran with it. He delivered for them and now they have had enough of him. I am not sure where the glory is in this for Arthur to be facing off with the status quo. But one thing is certain is that they intend to defend their girl Mia to the max.

In any organisation the glue that binds the agency together when unhinged opens up the severe cracks that were always there. There was never any love among or between these political folks. The public display of what has taken place is only the semblance of the true love/hate chord that binds these individuals together. What the public debate has told me is that Arthur is certainly in planning. He has set the scene for a showdown between two of his party rivals without batting an eyelid.  My assumptions and commentary lead me to believe that Arthur is the single beneficiary of the current machinations and not the BLP.

THIS IS A LOAD OF RUBBISH! Hasn’t this government far more important matters to attend to than wash their mouths in the BLP’s business?

And surprise, surprise!!…..CBC DLP TV all of a sudden finds it possible to give BLP Members more that five (5) SECONDS EXPOSURE in the nightly news!

My advice to the BLP, even though it is so obvious……… create a little controversy every now and then, and you can be sure that CBC DLP TV with instructions from THE CLICO MAN “at the hellum” will increase your TV coverage from a few seconds a night every two months, to about 2 minutes every other night!

In the meantime, they will allow imbeciles like Kenny Best to parade in photo opportunities, talk crap, and unfairly criticise the opposition for as long as they like.

Sorry, NOT “CLICO MAN”…….I meant “CLICO BUFFOON”

  3. It is true the DLP PR machinery has gone into high gear.

One would have thought it would be the BLP.

  4. Almost every other story is based on the BLP with the same old talk of Owen and Mia. We have more problems going on in the country, yet instead of working with solutions, we are being side track with issues dealing with the opposition. Owen and Mia can talk to the cows come home, they can do a pang. We need to move on to more important things. Let them fight it out.

Is it possible for Barbadians to receive some kind of update on The Prime Minister’s condition, and can he really function as Dr. Ishmael has suggested? We regret his illness, but this is serious business………seems wrong to me to play politics with his illness, at the same time that prayers are going up for him!

  6. The current arrangement can’t be one for the long-term.

  7. David the DLP has learned its lesson. Nobody cares about you if nobody knows about you.
In modern day life you have to proactive.

The BLP is in deep doodoo. Owen Arthur was their leader for 14 years. Surely they can’t say he is not the most experienced person to lead them.

It would have been better for the party if he had supported MIA and let her be the undisputed heavyweight going into the next election. Instead Owen and his band of geriatric renegades seek to destroy the political career of a woman they groomed as his successor.

The other problem the BLP and Mottley faces is Owen’s poor boy card. A lot of Bajans like de poor boy cause he is one a dem. That translates into a lot of votes.

  8. @We Want To Know
The PM is not the President of the USA or the Prime Minister of Canada. His condition will not affect the Stock Market or the world currencies.

We will get an update on his condition when there is a substantial change.

If you need a definitive answer to your question ask Dr.GP.

  9. @Hants

Have never seen you so animated on the blog!

  10. I cannot believe it. The BLP supporters begging for an ease. Henderson Bovell gone into hibernation. Just five years ago they were all over the DLP with their leadership problems. Now they are telling DLP supporters to get on with the job of managing the country because this is only a small issue with Mia and Owen. Come on DLP supporters rub the salt in their wounds until yours come again.
This is not a small issue because if certain decisions are taken on Monday the BLP will end up a fractured party. Although the BLP supporters want Owen Arthur as their leader to win back the government he will not get the support of Barbadians who will see him as a greedy politician who just wants to enjoy the power that Prime Ministers wield in Barbados.
I believe there will be a compromise on Monday because Owen will not go for the Jugular this time.

  11. Seriously we need to focus on the economy. The thing that gives us the resources to eat, buy vehicles, houses, travel, plan for retirement, pay the doctor, buy school uniforms, send children to school, attain a feeling of reasonably high self esteem etc.

  12. @Hants

Based on our checks Mia indicated she was stepping down from an organization she was invited to speak. Missed the name of the organization, sorry.

  13. @David “Have never seen you so animated on the blog!”

I usually reserve my “intensity” for a few months before the elections but the Hartley and George playing nice and this BLP crisis needs some heat.

Owen was Prime Minister for 14 years. he owed it to the people of Barbados to support Mia Mottley and the BLP in providing a strong effective opposition.

When did he and his geriatric brigade wake up and decide that Mia was an ineffective leader of the opposition. What did she do or didn’t do that is different from 2 years ago.

When did George and co decide it was time to endorse de coup cou an put Owen back in de pot.

This is no minor reoganisation of the leadership. This also speaks to a more serious matter as reported in the press.
Was there improper procedures being “orchestrated” to ensure Mia lost the Leadership?

And where is George MIA Bovell and Royal Owen Rumble?

  14. G.C. Brathwaite Avatar

By George! BU is playing around too much with these Georgie bundles. It may truly be a good idea to start looking forward beyond Monday. As I stated, the deal is don, and Mia does not appear to be engaging this fight. Her plans are to walk away knowing that she has done her best notwithstanding that some may argue against that. One lesson from war is that the wounded and deceased are remembered for the good; not the times when things did not work. I wish Mia success in whatever she attempts after years of dedicated service to party and country and region.

  15. Hants

Geriatric? Hardly! Owen is now 61, are you not in the same ball park? Are we going to throw 60 year olds to the curb and say that they are “Geriatric’? Owen couldn’t even qualify for a full Gov’t of Canada pension at that age although if he was a politician up here his bread would be buttered with ham (well I understand that Barbadian politicians qualify for some generous pension benefits too).

To your point that Owen “owed it to the people of Barbados to support Mia Mottley and the BLP in providing a strong effective opposition.” Perhaps Owen thinks that the people of Barbados will be better served if he leads that Oppostion.

I agree with you Hants this question drives much deeper and requires much more attention than a passing comment.

This reaches right to the question about honesty in Govt office and begs the question if the would stoop so low to pad an internal vote what would Owen and Company do for a power grab ?

Remember Owen lived no off of his salary but rater he lived off of Hallam Nicholls and his entourage of bag men collecting from his every underhand deal that he carried out and trust me they are many.

George Payne deserves time in Dodds for collecting taxpayers monies for 10 years and not showing up to work and futher compounded with this most recent display of greed by he and his company of criminals Marshall, Toppin, Arthur and Clarke.

  19. The reason why there is no clamour for owen Arthur is Mia Mottley. If Owen Arthur was not willing party to support and lead the gang of 4, Mia Mottley would be the undisputed leader of the BLP.

In the nine member Opposition, ONLY five seem to be against Mia Mottley and everyone of that 5, seem to have a problem with the fact that she is a woman. That seem to be their cause.

However, whether you are B or D, you would have to admit (if you are honest) that it is Mia Mottley who exposed the Clico Fiasco. It is Mia Mottley who brought the no-confidence motion and who exposed the NHC scandal.

It was Mia Mottley who made a case for BARP members to get back their money from Clico. It was Mia Mottley who exposed the fact that someone was able to get out $877,000 from Clico, which was more than what would repay BARP members their investment.

It was Mia Mottley who called for a humane immigration policy. It was Mia Mottley who spoke out about the 60% water increase and the failure of government to adjust the land tax rate or bands.

It was Mia Mottley who spoke out on behalf of Barbadians, as regards the diesel price increase. It was Mia Mottley who called on the DLP to ease the pressure, as regards the high cost of living.

It was Mia Mottley who called for a Statement of Economic and Financial Policies (BUDGET). It was Mia Mottley who called for a job lost prevention plan.

On every issue that was important to Barbadians, Mia Mottley was the voice on behalf of the people. While she was busy, the men were either silent or doing everything to avoid PM Thompson who was in his prime. In contrast, when all of her calls were made on behalf of Barbadians, PM Thompson was at his best.

PM Thompson has unfortunately fallen ill and all of a sudden, the five are now pushing to get to the trough. On Monday five men who were MIA for the past three years (even though accepting a salary from the public purse) will hold her trail after having convicted and sentenced Mia Mottley.

Yes, they have the power and the right to fire her. But do they have cause? No!!! What crime did she commit? NONE! Is she guilty of corruption, electoral fraud or election rigging? No!

Then what did she do? Did Mia Mottley put $75,000 (given to the BLP as campaign financing) into her personal bank account? NO! SHE HAS DONE NOTHING WRONG!

Was she involved in corruption on the ABC highway? NO! Then what is her crime. NOTHING. She just happens to be a woman AND SEEMS TO BE STANDING IN THE WAY OF FIVE DESPERATE AND POWER HUNGRY MEN WHO SEEM EAGER TO FEED AT THE THROUGH.

Thank God for PM Thompson and the DLP who are now bringing a Prevention of Corruption Bill on Tuesday!

  20. Well said Opposition at Sea. George Payne is despicable. Short runt drew taxpayers money for years without saying a word in Parliament or to his then and soon to become again boss Owen Seymour. The good folks of St. Andrew missed a golden opportunity to rid themselves of this parasite in 2008. No way he should have beaten Irene the beautiful Nubian queen. Hopefully if the Nation is correct Mia’s candidates can make a case against him and boot his short botsy out of BLP. That would be true justice. In meanwhile the BLP is cannabalising itself. Who would have thought George Pain would be Owen’s gopher in 2010..

The only reason you did not suffer melt down before was this thing call POWER which was in your grasp, you lost the rights to that and with out it it is clear to see that you need POWER to be in unity with one another otherwise it is dog eat dog in the BLP.

Trust me not a man is sad for you and your party you brought it onto yourself by placing something like Mottley in a leading role, she is unfit to lead if for no other reasom on moral grounds, and Arthur is unfit to lead on corruption and moral grounds as well.

Go and wheel and come again , no one needs to fear you and you gang any longer you lot are a spent force, I know you lived by instilling fear into the Barbadian people but no longer are Barbadians fearful of you.

We are now laughing at where your leadership has lead this once good party to, it is now seen floundering on the rocks of the reef off parliament building and not a fisherman will come to your rescue, this is pay back for you most evil ways.

  22. @Sargeant,
Please go with the flow. I shouldn’t have to read and spell for you but I will just in case you are a member of Owen’s brigade.

In the context of some aspects of the discussion, Owen and some of his accomplices are old compared to Mia who was being presented as new ,young and fresh with a slate of candidates for the next election that are young and vibrant. Ever heard of Santia?

Besides Owen older than me and this is a free blog and I will write what I choose to write until I get banned and if I call Owen geriatric and it offends you I suggest you visit the website that shall remain nameless for now.

And just so you know.I hope Owen will never become Prime Minister of Barbados again.

From whatever angle you look at it, no one can deny that Owen did it already, and he will do it again. Barbados needs a strong, wise, knowledgeable and respected leader…..Owen has the package.

He knows the mess we were left in in 1994, and he knows how to clean up mess and restore respectability and stability.
Sandi catch-a-fire the country and then called the fire brigade; Sandi push the country into the Careenage and then called the lifeguard too late.

The DEMS THEN SPREAD PROPAGANDA all over the place saying that Sandi stabalised the place and save Barbados from devaluation! What idiocy! Owen is the man who saved the day……remember 28% unemployment? Remember businesses falling down like dead flies? Remember soaring cost of living? Remember people losing their homes? Remember rampant crime? All of that is coming back, and the DEMS don’t have a clue about what to do!

But Owen said in 1994……. NO ONE JOB IS JOBS!!!! In case you have forgotten, he then proceeded to bring unemployment down from 28% to 6%, the lowest ever in the history of this country! Everybody in the Caribbean wanted to follow the Barbados model.

This is the man that Thompson described as having an EXPIRED SHELF LIFE!!! YOU IMAGINE THAT? The man looking so healthy and full of vigour and they talking ’bout expired! BECAUSE YOU ‘FRAID OF HIM?

  24. @Anonymous Numero Uno “Barbados needs a strong, wise, knowledgeable and respected leader.”

Wuh wrong with Mia Mottley other than she is female and untarnished by corruption?

They want MIA badly, because she is a better target for their nastiness. CAN’T YOU ALL SEE THAT ALREADY THEY ARE SHIVERING AND RUNNING SCARED OF THE LITTLE MAN WHO PUNCHES WAY ABOVE HIS WEIGHT?

    My response:

    This is pure froth.

First point. It is extremely difficult for any real decent man to curse a woman. Secondly, allegations of corruption does not apply to Mia Mottley. Third point.

In the very first statement made by Owen Arthur, he said he accepts full responsibility for all acts committed by his government during the 14 years he was PM.

The DLP is bringing a Prevention of Corruption Act, and though it will not be retroactive, there will however, be a window of opportunity between now and the time it passes the Senate and is Gazetted. Still, that Bill will allow the DLP to talk about all the things HH mentioned in his column last week.

It will give also give the DLP the opportunity to talk about exposed persons and even the electoral rigging and electoral fraud we are reading that is now going on in the BLP.

That immediate places the 5 (who will fire Mia Mottley on Monday) on the back foot. It would not achieve similar were Mia Mottley leading the BLP.

Why? Because her campaign could be the same new politics she spoke about at the BCCI luncheon, which is in the document to the left of this post.

As I recall, Mia Mottley has already called for parliamentary reform and campaign financing reform to preserve the integrity of our electoral system. That call by her was made long before the news of the electoral fraud within the BLP, surfaced.

Trust me, PM Thompson is good but Stuart (in my view) is far more deadly as regards the use of the English language. Even during debate on the Prevention of Corruption Bill, the BLP will be on the back foot.

Now, there is only ONE occurrence that could save the BLP right now or within the next week. Therefore, your allegation that the DLP is running scared of Arthur and wants Mia Mottley is a big joke.

With arthur, the focus will be on a ready-made-campaign based on corruption whereas with Mia Mottley, it does seem from her speech to the BCCI – that Barbadians (both B’s and D’s) will be invited to be part of history in the making and to help shape a new politics and a new development path for Barbados. This is the Team Barbados approach and the unity PM Thompson called for.

If you are a spokesman for the 5, it is clear why they were pushed into parliament in pan-carts, scraping home by a puny 49, 44 and 120 votes respectively.

  26. Shame on you George Payne, a man who sat in Parliament for about five years without saying anything on behalf of the people who sent him there or the party he represents, now trying to hijack the same party along with four other power hungry men. Mr. Arthur you should be seen as a statesman, but now in the eyes of many Bajans you are seen as an ‘Old man in a hurry”. Your actions are clear for everyone to see. Do you have a problem with women, why treat Mia Mottley in the manner you and your so called friends are. George you have money but money can not buy everthing, the Barbados Labour Party members would send you that message when we vote at conference, thats if you are still a member. Power to the people.

  27. Wow! Power is the only thing that satisfies man. “Power corrupt’s, absolute power, corrupt’s absolutely.” Owen S Arthur decided that he wanted to be the leader of the opposition, the day after he and his party was defeated in the general election. He did the same thing that David Thompson did, wait for the political vultures to destroy themselves. You see, one can never know the true value of ones political assests, until one has to call on that assest for its use. Political succession is not an entitlement, but must be earned. Hence, lies Ms Mottley’s problems. She has always felt, as if hers was the right and priviledge to the office of Prime Minister of Barbados, no one has that self endowed right. The grass roots nature of the DLP, does not allow Stuart, Sinckler or any other member of the DLP, to wear any supposed elevation in party status on their sleeves. It is the aloof, erudite BLP disposition that allows the likes of Arthur, Mottley and others to be primarily politically self indulgent. We are witnessing the political contempt Mr Arthur feels for the people of Barbados, as he makes a mockery of the institution of government in Barbados. Prior to his political slaughter at the hands of the DLP, Mr Arthur hinted that he was politically burned out, and was contemplating resigning from politics. Did Mr Arthur not espouse how women were the future of the BLP? And did Mr Arthur not tout the progressive nature of the BLP, and himself as it referenced women? What has caused this hypocrital turn around in Mr. Arthur? I want to thank the BLP, for this freudian slip. Keep fighting amongst yourselves, the more divided you are, the more the people will see, how they can never return, any BLP administration to power, and by the way, I believe that any DLP administration is capable of a land slide victory over any BLP administration led by either Arthur or Mottley. Both candidates are inexcusably worthless.

  28. No one in Barbados has a birthright to be the Prime Minister, regardless of family or perceived ability.

  29. BU will restate its position on this matter by reposting a quote attributed to Owen Arthur:

    Sat, October 16, 2010 – 12:02 AM

“The BLP has a challenge and we have a situation where there’s not a contest for leadership within the party, but there is a problem in the wider Barbados society, where there is unacceptance and unacceptability of the present leader of the party.

“I would like to see Ms Mottley succeed in politics . . . I made Ms Mottley my Deputy Prime Minister . . . I also stepped down voluntarily as leader of the party.

“. . . The challenge facing Ms Mottley and the party is not within the parliamentary group. The challenge is to have a leader who enjoys wide acceptance and acceptability in the wider society, and wide acceptance in the parliamentary party.” – Former Prime Minister Owen Arthur speaking about Mia Mottley on Tuesday, October 27, 2009.

  30. That so called geriatric can still run rings around the DLP.

The DLP’s performance to date is not exactly impressive, so we all can understand why you would prefer anything other than having to face the little short man in the next elections.

No wonder they are running all over the place like headless chickens.

  31. When we had the Mascoll/Thompson squabble the people had their say. It was one of the biggest political stories which went on for years.

The Arthur/Mia challenge for leadership is equally a big story which has captured the public’s attention.

We need to get through quickly and get on with the business of governance.

The DLP may have similar issues but at this point it is speculative.

One would hope the DLP has learned from the past. Many of the DLP candidates being bandied around narrowly won their seats and that was with a national swing.

Let us the BLP can resolve this issue quickly and work at healing the fracture.

  33. @Mock police
“Who would have thought George Pain would be Owen’s gopher in 2010.”

“Mock Police”, do you really know what a gopher does? Digs up dirt, mines underground. In other words, he undermines. Exactly what George is doing. But, there is going to be a fallout somewhere. George is at the centre of it all. Owen is waiting. Why? George has shot himself in the foot and the head as well.

This is payback time. Owen is getting rid of George and he cannot see it. George is the lead man, up front and centre. His rashness, false impression he has of himself, which has fooled others to believe that he is somebody of importance, is blowing up in his face. This, again, is the frog in the barrel with the water heating up situation. He just cannot tell the heat is growing around him, because the heat inside of him is getting greater. He is stewing in his own soup and cannot see it because of his arrogance.

Note well, Owen and Mia are holding their peace as much as possible. All the daggers are at George and he can’t see them. Mia might be shifted one side, but come the Conference, George gone!!!!!

Now, the Women’s League situation:- Pat Parris.
Is she from the St. Joseph Constituency? Is she a Dale Marshall and, by extension, a George Payne operative? If “Yes!” to both of these questions, can anyone see the extra delegates coming in? To support who? Certainly not Mia. Apart from St. James North, from which constituency were the increased delegates coming? Members of the party need to check this information and let their voices/votes do the talking.

I am reading into this situation…… based on my personal knowledge of George Payne’s methods, what his moves are. I am stating emphatically, George, Dale and Glyne Clarke are pushing for Douglas Skeete to be one of the major stakeholders in the BLP at the coming Conference. He IS to replace Rawle. Edmund Hinkson and Sandra Husbands are not part of the plan.

However, there is going to be some serious dirt to clean up if personal attacks are made by the two camps on each other. There is too much acrimony and viciousness in the way things are being done. Indeed, “Mock Police” is correct; George is being used as Owen’s gopher…….”Go Fuh Her”.

@Bajan Panday, I will respond fully when I come back online on Monday. I Can only waste so much time with you. But you really believe that Thompson’s call for unity was sincere? You recall that Ms Mottley over the last nearly three years repeatedly warned this government about THEIR ill-advised policies, and she made valuable and wise suggestions, even called for special bi-partisan committees of Parliament comprising Gov’t and Opposition to consider the challenges facing the economy?

You recall that she repeatedly warned them about the devastating effects their policies would bring to the Barbados economy? And do you remember that BOTH THOMPSON AND ESTWICK BERATED Ms.Mottley, and what was their final response?
It was, “WE DON’T WANT TO HEAR ANYTHING FROM YOU or anybody in the opposition!!”

As far as I recall, it was Ms. Mottley and the opposition who initiated the call for unity…REAL UNITY… not this death bed hypocritical plea now coming from Thompson! Even in his predicament, he has no sincerety. And this is not to say that I do not empathize and feel sorry for him and his family…..but it is time to stop playing these political games.

When Thompson earlier realised he was getting into hot water with the economy (when he was at his DEADLIEST [no pun] along with Stuart, your words, see your post above) he tried public relations foolishness by handing out a play-play invitation to Owen to come to Ilaro Court and help him out.

The recent Wickham Poll bores holes in that off-the-mark- assessment. Mia Mottley’s approval rating has impoved (Wickham said to what it was in 2005) that is to say – before arthur’s off-the-mark-assessment, which does not hold.

In fact, it is arthur who has lost significant ground which led Wickham the specialist to say that he has maxed out.

In the middle of what is described as the worse economic crisis in history, arthur (the Economis) has an approval rating of a mere 22%, whereas Thompson (who was away from the job due to ill health) was 42%.

You would have thought that as the only Economist in the crowd, when that skill is rumoured to be critical, taht arthur should be upwards of 60%. It did not happen. Has he maxed-out?

Here is the real discussion point!

How many people can lead any political party at a time? ONLY ONE? Therefore, had the question been: who do you want to be PM, Mia Mottley or David Thompson, the result would be different.

It is like what happened in T&T in the election before the last. The Indian vote was split betwwen the UNC and the COP.

  36. @Bajan Panda

Adrian has been telling you like a stuck record, all that matters is the majority which the parliamentary group provides. All other matters are academic.

Panday, one more thing…….Please call specialist DLP PROPAGANDIST WICKHAM, and request him to do another pole now as to the preferred leader, and see if Thompson would get anything near 42%!

    BLP battle

    OWEN ARTHUR AND MIA MOTTLEY

    By PETER WICKHAM

Those among us who follow politics would recall two previous occasions when it appeared as though the Barbados Labour Party (BLP) was on the verge of deciding the fate of the current Opposition Leader Mia Mottley and both of these events turned out to be non-events because one or both of the principal players did not turn up.

the occasion that Mottley “threw down the gauntlet” and publicly challenged her tormenters to “speak now or forever hereafter hold [their] peace”. One year (and one CADRES poll) later, a similar situation arises.

However, this time the ultimatum is being issued by the Opposition members and not the Opposition Leader.

The facts related to this issue are simple and need not be restated; however, there is considerable curiosity regarding apparent urgency of this most recent round in the ongoing Opposition battle, since elections are not constitutionally due until 2013.

Under normal circumstances, Mottley’s adversaries would have three years to negotiate a more harmonious resolution; but most realistic politicians appreciate the extent to which an early general election is a distinct possibility.

In this scenario the BLP would be severely disadvantaged. However, if it were led by Owen Arthur it could more successfully attack the DLP’s apparent economic weakness since his experience in such matter towers above that of Thompson’s heir apparent Christopher Sinckler.

This “match” seems to be a logical strategy for the BLP although this writer is not convinced that it would make much difference.

If one were to look at the issue from the other side, there is a certain amount of “unfairness” that manifests itself. Mia Mottley was selected by the parliamentary group immediately following the previous election which Arthur led the BLP into unsuccessfully.

She has led the Opposition since then, and while she has her own style of doing things, she cannot be said to have been a failure, since failure is best judged by the outcome of an election, which she is yet to fight.

Apart from these moral issues there is also the developmental issue which is relevant to the BLP as an organisation, as well as Barbados as a country. In this regard, one needs to ask what new and fresh ideas could Arthur bring to the table that he did not advance in the close to 15 years he was Prime Minister.

Moreover one can ask if the reasons why he was dismissed as Prime Minister in 2008 have changed so fundamentally two years later that he would be re-elected now.

    Few would disagree

There are few among us who would disagree with the proposition that Mottley appears to be the BLP’s brightest prospect for the future; and for this reason it would seem more logical to invest in the future than to cling to romantic notions of the political yesteryear.

In situations like this where sharp lines are drawn politically, it is difficult to negotiate a solution that allows both parties to feel vindicated; and the situation has not been helped by frequent references to the Press which is apparently the preferred route for delivering political messages.

If either side should “back down” they look as though they have lost – and politicians cannot lose. Moreover if an accommodation is reached that places an alternative leader at the helm, the fact that we now know the persuasion of each BLP member would also lead to the public identification of a winner and a loser (although inadvertently).

There is even major significance in the matter of attendance at the meetings, since for Mottley to attend means that she has been has been “summoned”; and everyone knows that it’s the leader who does the “summoning”.

Conversely, if Arthur appears and Mottley doesn’t, then it looks like he was not powerful enough to bring her to the table and he also wants the job (of leader), which is something that he has skilfully denied up to this point.

In the final analysis the best case scenario for the BLP at this stage is for the parties to emerge from consultations with an agreed leader that both sides are willing to swear allegiance to.

This is without the unseemly display that would be caused if they were forced to remove Mottley without her express or implied agreement, which can only come from her attendance at the meeting which this analyst thinks is doubtful.

As strange as it might seem, Mottley now holds more political cards than Arthur does at this time, and this has nothing to do with the “legal” authority that is derived from the leadership of the Opposition.

Mottley’s oppressors must be aware that if they move against her improperly they will confront the righteous indignation of a large section of the BLP support base, the vast majority of whom are women like her, which could predetermine the outcome of any imminent election and make the leadership issue moot.

The Arthur camp can, however take some comfort in the possibility that Mottley might actually want to avoid contesting this election more than they think and her response thus far has had more to do with a defence of her image than a determination to stay in the job.

If these assumptions are correct, the solution would be to provide Mottley a dignified exit strategy that preserves her image of political strength; and one such solution could emerge from an eleventh hour meeting before the Monday deadline that creates a consensus and makes that meeting unnecessary and irrelevant.

  39. Anonymous numero uno, leave Hants and Panday alone. Go and look at the parliamentary debates from earlier this year, and tell me if Owen Arthur was not drunk with power. Owen Arthur and his Ministers of State, like that “Benedict Arnold”Clyde Mascoll, drove Barbados to the brink of economic disaster. Arthur, the corn fed Barbadian economic genius, could not balance Barbados’ cheque Book, however he knew good enough where his money was. As usual the BLP, the party of the elite, allowed foreign investors, to financially tap dance on Barbados’ economic well being. When Thompson came to power, he had a wholly economic mess, that required “Horse sense,” to fix. Barbados’ Standard and Poors rating was down, and the balance of trade deficit was heading towards an infintesimal situation. I do not have a horse in this race, but fair is fair. Owen Arthur was struggling in years twelve, thirteen and fourteen of his administration, what will any intelligent person, think about his return to the leadership helm of the BLP. Mia Mottley on the other hand, has never had a ministerial portfolio, that she left in better shape than she found it. As Minister of Education, she started Barbados’ decline relative to its high educational percentile. As Attorney General, look at the catastrophe, near pandemic episodic crime situation facing Barbados. As Minister of Foreign Affairs, she was unable to extend Barbados’ economic and tourism industry to newer heights. If ministerial portfolios are to judge and determine Ms Mottley’s future, well, she has failed abysmally. I was always taught as a child, to finish what was you did, before starting something else. Ms Mottley could stand to learn that lesson. Barbados is not at crisis level yet, so people need to stop panicking. Mr Thompson though ill, is nnot dead and buried, so people need to stop planning a state funeral. Like Thompson or not, wish the man well, support the government and move “North”of this factious non sensical poltically embarassing foolishness. If at a time that Barbados should be in national reflection, the BLP party is behaving like this, I would never support that classless group to be the next government of Barbados. Mr Arthur has for to long made a mockery of the political system in Barbados. It’s time to send Mr Arthur down the “Political Yellow Brick Road.” Certainly, there’s a political “Land of OZ” for failed former Prime Ministers.

  40. I agree with the writer above who brings reference to the issue of the nature of the manipulations in this situation.

The allegation in a daily newspaper of forging signatures for BLP votes by an Opposition MP are most serious.

What does this speak of the caliber of person whom is representing us in Parliament.

How does this reflect on the major issue created by a contract awarded, seemingly within the responsibility of this same person or same individuals, which subsequently went sour?

How can we talk of integrity legislation when such reports of forging etc would indicate that we have serious gaps in the suitability our elected officials, yet we elect them anyway?

I would say ‘poor Barbados’, but you know, God don’t sleep.

  41. BU is indeed following this development of vote rigging of alleged very closely.

  42. in ref to Owen Arthur speech on Tuesday Oct 27 th 2009. He had already set the propaganda wheels in motion trying to brain wash the public by telling them that Mia was unaccepatable as a leader. On what grounds was he trying to make such a point and what was his proof . He has yet to tell the public his reason.
Come Monday thye Dirty Five will be singing another tune and Mia would still be leader . Right now the public see Owen as power hungry and damage goods and have lost total respect for him. The woman going to stand shoulder to shoulder and give her their support. OWEN IS DAMAGED GOODS! he has the makings of a dictator. Bajans are not foolish. We might be slow! but we are not Foolish! Go Home Owen . Yuh Stew is Burning!

  43. @ac

Most Barbadians know what Arthur is referring to. Whether it makes a difference to how Bajans vote is another matter. Bear in mind as PM he would have been privy to things not* in the public domain.

No doubt if he and his cohorts are successful in wrestling the leadership from MAM he will have a lot of explaining to do at the upcoming conference. To use Yardbroom’s description, if he is a master tactician he should be prepared to do so.

  44. Yardfowlism is alive and well in Barbados. George Payne the architect and author of confusion, rides again. Payne’s genius at ignoramus pursuits, allow him to create chaos, from peace. In order for mental midgets like George Payne to thrive, manufactured chaos must be front and center. Owen Arthur over the years has had nothing but scant disrespect for George Payne. Follow me on the journey where George Payne, Arthur’s Minister of Agriculture was dismissed from the cabinet, without proper notification from the Prime Minister. That speaks volumes, of the respect Arthur holds for George Payne, Clyde Mascoll or the other members of that misfit “Motley Crew” of politicians. Let move away from political circus acts, and start serving the people of Barbados. Only the current political regime is capable of this sort of leadership. Except for that “Horse’s Ass” Estwick, the DLP is weathering the economic storm of Barbados. If the Prime Minister resigns from active politics, Freundel Stuart is an able politician, and his second in command Chris Sinckler is an able politician, and the future of Barbados. The yardfowls in the BLP, can stop their playa hating, and try solving the political dilemma that has invaded their party. Why would any progressive political party, return to yesterday’s ideas? Mr Arthur is yesterday’s ideas, the future belongs to the youth of Barbados. Recycled geriatric politicians should sit at home, and wait for a knighthood. If Owen has conquered his alcoholic demons, perhaps he should assist others in a meaningful “Alcoholic twelve step program.” But saber rattling and agitating, is not the stuff that former Prime Ministers are made of. History will judge Mr Arthur and his “Lynch Mob”as those who sabotaged, and infected the financial wounds of a struggling country and its people. Owen, this is to you, leave the leadership of the people of Barbados, to someone more able than yourself. As for you Ms Mottley, take a good look at yourself, and at your political value system. You are an excentric, political provocateur. Your interest lie not in the people of Barbados, but in exercising your own political self righteousness. Shame on you, because at a time when our country is hurting, all of you BLP politicians can only think of yourselves. I hope and pray that none of you ever fall ill, or that a fate of any significant emotional event, never plagues any member of the opposition. Our country is hurting, and at a moment when political grace, would have sufficed, there’s the Barbados Leftout Party, fighting over a stupid internal leadership issue. May god Bless the people of Barbados, David Thompson, and the entire Thompson Family. And may the government of Barbados thrive, even though the grass may appear to not be green.

  45. Women like you and I have always made the difference in every election, and starting now – as never before, your voice, the stand you must take and your hope will be the deciding factors in brining about change and in forging a new future for Barbados.

No one is simply asking you to trust in Mia Mottley’s ability to bring change to Barbados but you must trust your ability and know that for generations, women like you and I have been the backbone of this country as mother, wives, caregivers, counsellor while providing unmatched service to Barbados as a support base and a unifying force.

You must be willing to fight for your cause and must kick-down the notion that the only reason you and your daughters cannot become Prime Minister of Barbados, is because they are a woman.

I believe that this is our moment to finally take a stand. To say enough!

This is our moment to create that future that we so desperately want. A future where a woman can become and remain Leader of the Opposition because she is more competent that the five who seek to remove her. A future where a woman can become Prime Minister based on her ability.

We must fight for Barbados to become a place where a woman can aspire to any office based on merit and also to ensure that she will not be remove from office by men who are far less competent than she is.

If we are willing to fight for this cause, if we do this together with courage, passion and faith and hope in what is possible then we will be on the right side of history and as patriotic Barbadians – be successful in brining the change to this country that it needs.

I am asking all women in this country to have faith in our ability to do what must be done to give our country a new start.

This is our moment to join together to forge a better future for our children and our families. We have a chance to make something possible NOW.

Help Mia Mottley transform this country in a fundamental way. If you believe that as women your moment has come. If you believe that this is your opportunity to bring about UNITY; to restore honour, dignity and principle to our politics, If you opposed the corruption mainstream media spoke about recently as regards electoral fraud,

If you believe it is time to change the system that has prevented women from aspiring to high office, If you want to be part of a cause that can bring real change Barbados then you must stand with Mia Mottley against the power-hungry gang of 5, who will fire her tomorrow.

    This is your moment.

The change Barbados needs can start with you.

  46. Expatriate, Not even I could could have been so brutal and vicious with words, I take my hat off to you my friend for a very true picture of what the BLP is about.

  47. @Bajan Panda

You should be renames Kungfu Panda. Please tell why the women in the BLP and beyond have not sounded their voiced loud and clear for MAM?

  48. @ David

Here is the answer to the question you asked above:

And in another turn of events, a member of the BLP’s Women’s League revealed that a list of 210 delegates had been sent in to the general secretary although the women’s arm had not met officially to choose delegates. She said the concerns were similar to those highlighted by Eastmond……

When asked if the delegates were “officially selected”, Parris reiterated that the executive “met and agreed” on a number of delegates. She said she would not comment on the term “officially selected”

    http://www.nationnews.com/articles/view/move-on-george/

CORRUPTION, MONEY, ELECTORAL FRAUD, ELECTION RIGGING. 56 delegates = $560 dollars.

  49. @Panda

That is a BS response and does not address the question. Where is Billie, Liz, Nalita, Masie and the lot?

  50. Here is something else: NOW = Dems.

    BARP = Dems.

BLP’s women’s league = corruption; electoral fraud and election rigging

    DLP’s women’s league, now that’s obvious.

So why assit Mia Mottley when you can let the BLP self-destruct to your political advantage.
