[Bridgetown, BARBADOS] Graeme Hall Nature Sanctuary officials reported that a group of eight (8) men were caught stealing wildlife inside the RAMSAR wetland site on Sanctuary lands. Police were called when the trespass was discovered last Wednesday, but there was no response. The men continued to stay through the afternoon, while Sanctuary employees tried to calm the situation.

One employee reported that one of the men made personally threatening gestures as if he had a gun, and within the hour gunshots were heard coming from the Amity Lodge side of the wetland where the men were last seen.

The area is recognized by the international Convention on Wetlands as an area of significant biological importance. Both the Government of Barbados and the Sanctuary own the lands within the RAMSAR site.

After taking an estimated 100 tilapia, the intruders told a Sanctuary worker that they had a right to access and fish in the RAMSAR-protected wetland since Government had announced a Bds $1.0 million budget for it.

Police and Defence Force patrols of the RAMSAR site have stopped since the Sanctuary closed in December of last year. Authorities have not explained why this has happened.

There is deep concern that environmental pollution and other problems are escalating because of a lack of enforcement of environmental law in and around the Graeme Hall RAMSAR wetland.

“This is but one present-day example of a major threat to the wetland and the Sanctuary,” said one official. “If a thousand people came to take what they want, there would be nothing left. The wetland and the Sanctuary absolutely depend on legal and environmental protections from Government.”

A police report was filed on Thursday at the Worthing Police Station.

  1. These specious arguments (government paid money to the Sanctuary, so now it’s ours) have long been used by lawbreakers in Barbados, and of course, they get away with it, because nobody really cares. Not government, not the police, and certainly not the general population. After all we have cricket and Reggae on the Hill to come. The propensity for Barbados to shoot iteslf in the foot is becoming legendary.

  2. Any place in Barbados that is left unattended, will be vandalised by lawless bajans. There is a trend in this island where people’s property is a thoroughfare and the police knows it but like everything else unless something drastic happens, nothing is done. It is just a matter of time before paros take over that place.

  3. Please explain why the government of Barbados gave GHNS 1 million dollars if they did not ask for it.

Is this a case of the Doctor prescribing tablets for the wrong ailment?

”Police were called when the trespass was discovered last Wednesday, but there was no response”

    No response? Surprised…or NOT?

Yet, if there had been an altercation, something would have been done AFTER the fact and a whole lotta hullaballoo in the papers and officials promising increased security and patrols etc!

    What a joke.

Peoples, take steps to protect your own property, especially as unemployment is fast rising and crime is on the increase.

  5. Scout, the place has not been left unattended as the release mentions an “employee” speaking to the intruders and that “The men continued to stay through the afternoon, while Sanctuary employees tried to calm the situation.”

Official inaction is reminiscent of the Chancery Lane situation. Robbery and rape over a period of months culminating in a brutal beating and murder. Only after intense international publicity, is an almost immediate arrest made.

Maybe they are waiting to act when an employee of the Sanctuary is brutalized or worse by an intruder.

Hard to believe that the St. Lawrence police station is right next door.

David, maybe the official government blog spokesman WIV can tell us “why the government of Barbados gave GHNS 1 million dollars if they did not ask for it.”

  6. The police must be was thinking, “Why we should chance tekkin a bullet fuh a few musty fish? And besides, we might even have to get we feet wet wet up eff we go in dere.”

  7. A few years ago the painter from the nature sanctuary painted the Worthing police station inside and out. What happened since?

  8. What did the police say when the call was made?

  9. The government did NOT give a million to the Graeme Hall Nature Sanctuary because the Sanctuary did not take the money. Further, the money was not honestly offered because money is not the problem – environment degradation outside the sanctuary is why the place was closed.

The “offer” of a million dollars was only so Thompson could say “See? We care! We tried.” The million dollars was another type of lie.

  10. Haven’t people been fishing in the Greame Hall wetland for 5,000 or more years?

  11. J, ever heard about conservation and the need to protect natural resources including plant and animal species as well as their habitat for the future?

The Graeme Hall wetland, both private Sanctuary lands and the public owned lands, has been designated a Natural Heritage CONSERVATION Area.

One of the purposes of this designation (by Government of Barbados PDP 2003) is to “protect a functionally connected natural heritage system based on an ecosystem approach.”
