Based on the comments we have read  by the people over at KoolBarbados they appear to want to think outside the box about the issues facing our tourism product.

  1. Where is the Tourism Master Plan former Minister of Tourism Noel Lynch left in the ministry? It’s probably worthless in the prevailing climate anyhow.

  2. Quite frankly there isn’t much tiny Barbados can do short term to attract more tourists.

When banks, airlines, cruise lines, Chrysler, General Motors and Ford, etc., with thousands of research forecasters don’t know what to do either. Except fire people and stop producing.

There is one thing that could help all Bajans overcome this recession or depression or whatever it’s called.

Let every company on the island selling products and services start offering value for money.

This ranges from giving us Internet access speeds we’re paying for to arresting and sentencing reckless bus and van drivers. From blatant price gouging in supermarkets not only at Christmas to banning automated voicemail telephone switchboards.

It won’t help tourism one iota – or maybe it will – but we’ll all feel a helluva lot better.

You have started on something good there. And I would add jack up government workers. Too many government employees do absolutely nothing on a daily basis, it is madness. And people laugh and joke about it, even the new ministers are appalled by the fact that so many officers in the government get in to work after 9:30 and leave before 3:00. I am sure if we can streamline our system it would save us millions of dollars and would actually get things done around here, especially the things you stated.

  4. @RE Engineer

Wonder how you feel about the debate on increases for public workers last week in parliament. The consensus by our MPs was that our public worker are hardworking and efficient and deserve every bit an increase.

  5. David

Well I believe it is a double edged sword, because I do believe some ministries work efficiently and members are hardworking and do deserve a raise. However, and that is a big However, not everyone deserves the raise but since it has to be a cross the board decision it will benefit both parties, though some undeservingly. As one of the MPs said in the paper recently, can’t remember who, think it was Chris Sinckler, it is time there should be some form of accountability, and raises should be given as a productivity bonus, as is usually done in the private sector. Though I believe this should be done, its implementation would be exceedingly difficult. Government is too much about politics and friends and preferential treatment, so at the end of the day the hard workers would still not be any better off than the friends of persons in high places who would always get some form of favour. And contrary to private sector which does do the friendly thing, productivity is at the centre, few private organisations can survive with unproductive people. So even though friends and family are hired they earn their keep. In government this is not the case because their is honestly little incentive to work. Why would you care when and how things are done when it has no bearing on your pay or ability to advance in the structure? Especially if you have been working there 10 years in an acting position and then the friend of a minister comes and takes up the post knowing nothing about the job. There are some of us that like to do a great job no matter what but being in that type of environment drive starts to wane and then the question of what it is point comes up. It happens over and over and over. The only solution would be external auditing and productivity appraisals. Similar to what large private establishments do. This would weed out the bad apples and save millions of dollars, along with streamlining government services. Maybe instead of waiting 4 years for a highway to finish it would take a year. Instead of waiting for ever for permission to build, extend or transfer land to your name it would be done in a few months. That would save even more, since some of the costs of waiting can be high. The performers would be paid and the ones who don’t perform will pay the price.

  6. Re Engineer, I would love to see the day that the things you mentioned above come true! but as you said politics is about getting so and so a job! Oh well, refreshing to read still!

Yup the present MPW have done a great job in delaying and frustrating the building of the Highway.
I trust they get their just rewards.
As it cant be an increase in salary what is the incentive?
Promotions in the dept for services rendered?
