Back in the day decent Barbadians would hear of the erotic exploits which occurred at certain clubs on Nelson Street and the adjacent Bay Street. The Zanzibar and Castro Clubs are the two that come quickly to mind. It was the area where the visiting marauding sailors spilled from the military and civilian vessels berthed in the nearby harbour and descended on Nelson Street like flies on dodo.
High Street Barbados even as it is today would never be caught dead frequenting Nelson Street. Periodically as they do even today the Police would raid the two clubs and the girls rounded-up and deported, or fined based on their resident status. Of recent vintage is the 21 Club which was opened on Baxter’s Road before its demise.
As our society has ‘developed’ gentleman clubs previously isolated to Nelson Street are now sprouting-up all over Barbados. These clubs are being setup to cater to middleclass Barbados and the tourists. The void left by the diminished role of the Church and religion has been quickly filled by the clubs.
Many of our Christian citizens don’t even bother to pretend that a moral wrong is being committed when they go visiting the clubs.
In 2007 BU highlighted the illegal activities which was occurring at the Lavaground Club on Roebuck Street. It was several months before the authorities decided to shut the club down. In Barbados we have a tendency to avoid striking when the iron is hot, it is not in our nature, or so it seems. The current debate on the impact of migrant labour, specifically illegals and the moldering educating system are good examples, we continue play political football with these important issues.
We are particularly concerned about the kind of activities being fed to our society by Club Maramel on Maxwell, Matador on Synogogue Lane and Rolex on Spring Garden. The fact that the Police raided the Rolex Club not too long ago in the wee hours of the morning and had to back-off because of who was present is just an example of one law being practiced for the Pharisees and one for the Persians. We urge our authorities in high office to walk the walk and talk the talk. Some of us are watching.
We don’t expect a Utopian society but we will not accept Sodom and Gomorrah either.
