images.jpgThe discussion continues about the labor practices engaged by Cinnamon 88 the local company set-up to construct the Clearwater Development led by Barbadian and British businessman Michael Pemberton. Here is the lengthy Press Release issued by Michael Pemberton yesterday in response to Sir Roy’s public statement that locals were applying for jobs on the project and there is no current need to import Chinese labor.

(Thanks to the source for the information)

OVER THE LAST FEW WEEKS THERE HAVE BEEN SEVERAL MIS-STATEMENTS OF FACT AND SOME MISINFORMATION IN THE PUBLIC DOMAIN ABOUT THE LABOUR REQUIREMENTS AND PROCESSES GOVERNING THE RECRUITMENT OF LOCAL AND REGIONAL LABOUR FOR THE FOUR SEASONS HOTEL AND RESIDENCES AT PARADISE.

CINNAMON 88 , THE DEVELOPMENT COMPANY OF THIS PROJECT THEREFORE WISH TO TAKE THIS OPPORTUNITY TO CLEAR THE AIR. STARTING YESTERDAY WITH A STATEMENT BY THE GENERAL SECRETARY OF THE BARBADOS WORKER’S UNION, SIR ROY TROTMAN. FIRSTLY, ONLY THIRTY (36) APPLICATIONS WERE RECEIVED YESTERDAY AND NOT SEVENTY (70) AS ALLEDGED BY SIR ROY. ALL OF THESE WERE NEW APPLICATIONS. NO ONE WHO APPLIED PREVIOUSLY REAPPLIED YESTERDAY.

FURTHER, THE COMPANY CATEGORICALLY DENIES THAT ANY APPLICANTS WERE REQUIRED TO PRODUCE CERTIFICATES AS PROOF OF THEIR SKILL. WE HAVE STATED BEFORE ALL INTERVIEWS ARE CONDUCTED IN THE PRESENCE OF AN OFFICER FROM THE LABOUR DEPARTMENT IN ORDER TO ENSURE TRANSPARENCY IN THE RECRUITMENT PROCESS. FROM THE INCEPTION OF THE RECRUITMENT PROCESS IN MID-JUNE A TOTAL OF 200 APPLICATIONS HAVE BEEN RECEIVED. OF THESE EIGHTY-TWO (82) PEOPLE WERE INTERVIEWED WITH A FURTHER SIXTY-THREE (63) INTERVIEWS SCHEDULED FOR NEXT WEEK. FIFTY-FIVE (55) APPLICANTS WERE NOT SHORT-LISTED FOR INTERVIEWS FOR VARIOUS REASONS. FROM THE INFORMATION PROVIDED ON THE APPLICATION FORMS, THIRTY EIGHT (38) COULD NOT PROVIDE ANY PROOF THAT THEY HAD A LEGAL RIGHT TO ENGAGE IN EMPLOYMENT, SEVEN (7) PROVIDED NO CONTACT INFORMATION, SIX (6) COULD NOT BE CONTACTED ON THE TELEPHONE NUMBERS SUPPLIED AND THE REMAINING FOUR (4) WERE NOT SHORTLISTED. ONE OF THESE FOUR ADMITTED TO REPEATED ABSENTEEISM AS THE REASON FOR LOSING HIS PREVIOUS EMPLOYMENT AND THE OTHER QUIT HIS JOB BECAUSE THE WORK SITE IN CHRIST CHURCH WAS TOO FAR FROM HIS ST. MICHAEL HOME. FORTY-SEVEN (47) PEOPLE, SO FAR, HAVE BEEN PROMISED EMPLOYMENT ONCE THE PROJECT STARTS. CINNAMON 88 WISHES TO RE-ITERATE THAT IT ISNOT ANTI-LOCAL OR ANTI-REGIONAL LABOUR.

OUR EXPERIENCE SUGGESTS THAT ONCE THE PROJECT STARTS WE WILL RECEIVE MANY MORE APPLICATIONS. RIGHT NOW NO ONE IS WORKING BECAUSE THE PROJECT CANNOT MAKE A VIABLE START WITH THE CURRENT LABOUR FORCE AVAILABLE, INCLUDING THE WORK PERMITS GRANTED TO FORTY (40) CHINESE ARTISANS. RECRUITMENT OF LOCAL AND REGIONAL LABOUR WILL CONTINUE AS THE PROJECT PROCEEDS IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE LABOUR DEMANDS, WHICH AT ITS PEAK IS EXPECTED TO REACH SOME EIGHT HUNDRED (800). CINNAMON 88 WISHES TO ASSURE SIR ROY THAT WE WOULD WELCOME ANY INTERVENTION BY HIM ON BEHALF OF ANY APPLICANT WHO HAS NOT BEEN SUCCESSFUL WHICH WILL BE INVESTIGATED ON AN INDIVIDUAL BASIS.

  1. The times they are a-changing. How much longer will it be before Bajans wake up and smell the coffee?

Thanks to Union intransigence, cronyism and nepotism Bajans have acquired a manner that is counter-productive.

We have an attitude that everything we do is done top-class. I’m sorry to have to announce: this status quo opinion is about to be dismantled.

Resulting from indifference, cronyism and nepotism we are seeing Bajan businesses being taken over, we see the QEH tottering, we see that ‘Crop Over’ and CBC are floundering. These are just three items from a list of fifty.

One thing is certain ~ the times they are a-changing. We are seeing the catabolic process now. In a while we’ll see the anabolic action begin (after much weeping and gnashing of teeth.)

Then, hopefully, Bajans will ‘get real.’

  2. Here is what happens when proper protocol is not followed in the first place and consistency of immigration, labour and other laws not being applied to ALL people coming into Barbados. And which has not one damn thing to do with being Hemophobes or Xenophobes but all to do with immigraion, labour, health and other laws of Barbados being bent to accommodate a wealthy Developer.

Had Pemberton followed the laws of Barbados when bringing his Chinese workers in he would be in the clear and have a strong case to say don’t blame me blame the Government.

But Sir Roy is equally guilty of handling the matter in a very wishy washy way. One minute he is vocal about these Chinese workers and allegedly substandard steel being used to construct the Chinese Pagoda. And then he meets with the inner sanctum of the Arthur regime and says he might “soften” his stand on these matters.

Then yesterday in the Nation News the BWU releases a press statement the one Pemberton is using to suggest Sir. Roy is not being truthful. But did anyone notice that the Nation News article did not say other than the BWU who released the information. Sir. Roy should have been named. Was he afraid to say this is coming from me? This sort of thing happens when you are in and out of bed with the “devil”!

All of this amateurish gamesmanship suggests to me that Sir. Roy gives not what damn about Bajans getting work before the Chinese but is playing the situation like a violin to get what he wants for himself.

One minute he is going to soften his position the next he is on the warpath again. But here is even a more critical part of the game being played with no one seeming to care if the steel IS DEFECTIVE or NOT as was claimed to be the case by Sir. Roy a few weeks ago.

One would think that with a hotel as big and prestigious as a Four Seasons that Pemberton and even the overseas Corporation would be very concerned about such an allegation that their hotel was being built with defective steel. And by Chinese workers whose record for quality and safe workmanship in their homeland is questionable. Causing them to take every possible course of action to clear up at least the defective steel issue. But even that allegation has gone by the wayside.

What a bloody fiasco this has turned out to be that points right back to the highest display of Government indifference no doubt influenced by Pembertons financial status in Barbados and his connections with the highest echelon of the BLP Party. No one it seems Pemberton, Sir. Roy, the BLP Government et al seem able to tell the truth or give a credible account of what goes on here!

Is it any wonder Glendairy burned down, The QEH is in a mess, we have squatters, vendors, etc being harassed and the press also being intimidated. And these are but the tip of the iceberg caused by a Government in chaos.

  3. I am not anti-union nor do I believe every thing that is said by Mr. Pembertom, but I think that it is time that Sir Roy Trotman stops throwing his weight around and getting on like a little spoilt child, when he does not get his way he usually throws his migthy weight around, he has to get all the facts before he acts. Too many times he acts on mis infomation and one sided information. We will have to see what he does in this case.

  4. Are you aware that the reconstructed Coconut Creek Condos of which Robin Patterson is a major shareholder is suffering from foundation problems as this was built on top of caves and now nearing completion and is collapsing there is a funny connection with Patterson, Coconut Creek and Paradise as Paradise also sits on top of caves.
Hopefully he did not use inferior quality steel in Coconut Creek as he is using in the Paradise project nor the cheap Chinese workers as he is using at Paradise.
