Of all the recorded literature that I have read, there is one that describes an efficient roadmap for this life. This roadmap allows us to quickly find our place on this journey, so that we may understand our next steps and their challenges.
That roadmap is Psalm 23. I shall paraphrase the short Psalm in the hope that its immense value to us may be appreciated.
IMPOSSIBLE TO FAIL.
God, the great Planner and Creator is also my Shepherd. His plans are perfect so if I follow Him, though I may not meet the expectations of other people, I cannot fail.
As I follow Him, I have the privilege of participating in His plans by choosing to do what is right. When He leads me to help those who wish me harm, I will not fear because He has the power to protect and rescue me.
RUNNING AWAY.
If fear overtakes me to the point where I stop trusting God and instead run away to escape harm, then God, my Shepherd, will find me and gently lead me to a quiet place of rest, peace and nourishment, where I may recover.
When my traumatised soul has been restored, He will lead me back to help those who wish me harm because he loves them and wants them reconciled to Him. He will provide me with more than enough resources that I need to follow Him.
For the rest of my life, God’s goodness will follow me. If I make mistakes on this journey, His mercy will similarly follow me, and I will remain under the umbrella of His protection, goodness and mercy forever, both in this age and the next.
COMING HOME.
That is the roadmap. It is important to know that following God is not easy. The ‘broad road’ of doing nothing is easier. Being led by our Shepherd to try to help and influence those who consider themselves to be our sworn enemies, because God loves them, may leave us traumatised by the experience.
If we care, we may become: frustrated by failure, disillusioned by unfairness, embarrassed by public ridicule, harmed by persecution, hurt by persistent criticism, broken by betrayals and disappointed by exclusion so that we despair to the point where we may all lose hope and give up. The roadmap reminds us to trust God to lovingly lead us back when we cannot find our way – suicide is never the right option.
To prepare children for this journey of life, Barbadian parents and teachers used to ensure that children memorised that roadmap. Sending them out without such a roadmap does them a grave disservice.
