Submitted by Dr. Roland Clarke, Concerned Resident of St. Thomas, Energy Consultant

On the 04 May 2024, the Hon. Cynthia Forde, Parliamentary Representative for St. Thomas asserted this is now the fourth (4th) fire at B’s Recycling. This site is an industrial dump located in the Cane Garden area of St. Thomas.

I am aware that fires at industrial dump sites are known to be particularly notorious to be extinguished. Sometimes, they simply burn unabated until the underlying fuel is exhausted. This poses ongoing health risks to those living in the affected areas.

Given the nature of the dump site, and it’s location smack in the middle of a residential area which pre-dated the dump site, one is left to wonder about the potency and respect for the Town and Country Planning Regulations of Barbados.

Yes, there is a need for such an industrial dump site on Barbados.  However siting must be balanced against the obvious overriding matters of health, safety, environmental impact and location.

MP Forde also revealed that there is a pending decision before Cabinet for the relocation of B’s Recycling dump site away from its current location at Cane Garden, St. Thomas.

Questions:

1. How long has this matter been before Cabinet?

2. When is the final decision going to be made by Cabinet?

3. Who will pay for the relocation of the dump site?

4. Who will pay for the negative health impacts on local area residents?

5. Who will pay for the clean up of any deleterious environmental impacts?

I add my voice to that of MP Forde as reported on Starcom Network below –

  1. What questions to ask this incarnation of a BLP regime.

    For this cannot be the same BLP regime which a few decades ago promised a dumping site in Saint Andrew which was a signal waste of public money.

    Indeed, after huge resources were applied that project then had to be abandoned.

    Mount Stinkeroo is another site which has had a long a storied history within the policial theatre.

    As both local political acts could be justly indicted.

    When?

    When?

    When will the country come to understand that this local cast of actors are best aligned to that device which achieved its heyday during the French Revolution of 1789.

  2. Who were the master planners having a plan to place B’s within a residential area
    Hasn’t there been long talk about relocating the plant for many years
    It is only when danger rears its head the goose neck.powers in control kick up a stink
    A couple days this problem would be taken up.by an easterly wind and be heard of no more
    Unless residents take legal action nothing would be done

  3. Sinckler and Lowe now dead promised to help with relocating B’s along with offering other support didn’t they?

  4. “When will the country come to understand that this local cast of actors are best aligned to that device which achieved its heyday during the French Revolution of 1789.”

    Inshallah! Glory be to God!

  5. David nice political answer
    But the residents needs solutions now
    Yesterday stale political news doesn’t help solve the problem today

  6. B’s cleared to open, willing to move

    IF GIVEN THE OPPORTUNITY, owner of B’s Recycling Paul Bynoe is willing to relocate the plant.

    He shared his position yesterday, after the Cane Garden, St Thomas facility was cleared to reopen after a fire on Saturday evening.

    While not against moving, Bynoe said he will be waiting on any updates from the Government.

    “A few weeks ago we had that discussion but I haven’t heard anything since then about the land they identified.

    Final totally out

    “The moving talk started with then Prime Minister Owen Arthur in 2007. I would hope they are putting things in place and if they have something to report, they will get to me with it,” he told the DAILY NATION.

    Bynoe said they were ready to reopen today.

    “At this time this fire is totally out and we are giving God thanks. Nothing was damaged that would stop us from opening tomorrow morning. It started in the yard and it was contained in the yard,” he added.

    Air quality

    Over the years several nearby residents have expressed concerns, and even held demonstrations, about air quality following several fires at the plant, as well as the vector population.

    On Saturday Member of Parliament for St Thomas Cynthia Forde renewed calls for the plant to be moved to Mangrove, also in St Thomas. She said though she supported the recycling plant, it was not in the right location Acting Deputy Chief Fire Officer Patrick Edwards confirmed that the recycling plant could reopen.

    “The fire was not like the other fires that were burning out of control. It was easily contained and restricted to a particular area,” he said.

    While the cause of the fire, which was reported around 4:59 p.m., is still being investigated, Edwards reiterated that only Class A material – cardboard and paper – were burnt.

    Flare-ups

    “We managed to get the fire extinguished just about 12:02 a.m. However, I had a crew that went to the area to investigate and I received reports that there were two flare-ups this morning but those were quickly [put out]. So I am happy that it’s fully extinguished at this point,” he said.

    One of the most intense fires occurred at the plant in 2019 which prompted the authorities to order a major clean-up of the premises.

    The operators were asked to remove all materials from the site’s perimeter, as directed by the Minister of Health, divide the metal heap into a minimum of five piles, 15 feet apart with a maximum height of 2.5 metres, and to put in place a programme to reduce the vector population. (TG)

  7. Garbage. Is a big and growing problem in the world. It’s also a big money spinner as well.

    But it might of no consequences.

    We’ve noticed that Putin has ordered a nuclear weapons drill in light of the pending arrival within the military theatre of F16s.

    The Russian Federation has a clear, legal, policy for nuclear weapons use.

    They relate to possible existential risks to the nation.

    The F16 war planes being supplied by NATO have the potential to carry air based nuclear weapons.

    Russia has stated two years ago when this escalatory measure was proffered that they cannot be certain whether these F16 fighter jets will be carrying nuclear ordinance or conventional.

    They contend, that in these circumstances they must assume the worse.

    All this at a time when the criminals within theJoe Biden and Netanyahu regimes almost certainly face imprisonment should they lose power.

    In the former, Donald Trump is almost certain to indict Biden, Blinken and the national security adviser, Jake Sullivan, who weeee all now know were involved in election and other criminal acts. Burisma el al!

    The prison guards in Tel Aviv await Netanyahu.

    Given circumstances where potential convicts face jail time and financial ruin. Where the Ukraine war has been long lost, barring the shouting. Where over 500,000 Ukrainians have been destroyed. Where Ukraine is now forcing men with one kidney, mental illnesses, other disabilities, are being dragooned to the frontlines. Where an election defeat, so overwhelming, is nearly unavoidable.

    These are drivers for the Biden regime to do the most reckless. Nuclear weapons use maybe, in their minds, a solution to their dire predicament should not be underestimated.

  14. In a related matter there was a fire in the city last night that displaced about 50 people. The decision to relocate the fire station from Probyn Street is again being questioned. With adverse weather conditions being a consideration Barbados will have to come up with a plan how we intend to battle fires and related incidents because of what some attribute to the effects of climate change.

    Black folks has never been in charge of “NOTHING” for over 400 years – including the purveyors of the “INSANITY” we call Rousseauian #GOV & the deceptive “CON” we called #CapitalistECONomics!!!

    Black folks are still “EATING, DRINKING & ENTERTAINED” from the “TROUGH” of the #PaleoPlantocracy “SLAVE MASTERS” who “UNDERWRITE” & “SIGN-OFF” on every facet of their miserable human lives – with “ZERO” redress when fatalities occurs or so-called “ACTS OF GOD” are perpetuated by “EVIL” men who disguise “TRUTH” with a “STINKING LIE”!!!

    Black folks are still “MASSED” & “HUDDLED” in “BARRIOS”, “TENEMENT YARDS”, “GHETTOES” & “NEO-COLONIAL PROJECTS”, on slithers of parcels of land with not enough breathing space to “FART” – reminiscent of the 4′ x 6′ sardine can apertures our ancestors had to survive in, (SHACKLED IN CHAINS BOTH MENTALLY & PHYSIOLOGICALLY), as they endured the long vapid, vacuous voyage to a future life of perpetual mass incarceration, unending burdensome toil – fuelled by mutilation, castration & sufferation and eventually ending in “DEATH”, at the hands of those who “RULED” over them!!!

    WHAT IS SO DIFFERENT DAY???

    None are ready for a dissertation on this, as most, if not “ALL” are incapable of facing “HARD TRUTHS”, due to the unpalatable nature of having the wool pulled from one’s eyes given the blaring intensity of sunlight on the retina of those who have chosen wilfully blindness!!!

    That being said – let’s ask the “MOTTLEY CREW GOV”: ‘WHY NOT PUSH DOWN NELSON STREET & REBUILD PROPER HOUSING FACILITIES ON THE OUTSKIRTS OF BRIDGETOWN & RELOCATE THOSE WHO YEARN FOR SPACE & A PIECE OF LAND WHERE THEY CAN GROW FOOD & RAISE FAMILIES’???

    It was not & could not have been accomplished during or after the “TRANS-ATLANTIC SLAVE TRADE” due to the fact that “UNIVERSALITY” did not exist because the earth was not a “GLOBAL VILLAGE” based on “COMMUNICATIONS INFRASTRUCTURE” & narrowing of geographical lines – notwithstanding, postmodern devices that made “EVERYTHING” #ArtificallyInstantaneous!!!

    Today, as in #GAZA, the moment is “RIPE” – unless, we get our “HOUSES IN ORDER” – as we did when “MOSES” prepared the people for the “FIRST EXODUS”!!!

    …maybe when they are down to their last family member or notice there is barely anyone left if they notice at all, then they will move, but TOO LATE…

    They refuse to get….that NO ONE IS COMING TO SAVE THEM…..no one will give up life or freedom for slave minds…..The families of Malcolm X, Martin Luther King, Medgar Evers etc are still there as WITNESSES.

  22. Everytime one looks around projects which were implemented by this blp regime involving the environment blows up in the face of the people causing harm to the people and the environment
    The Arch Cot projects where families fell to their death as the earth split apart under their homes
    The South West sewer disaster another mind blowing episode of an aged and outdated plant spilling raw sewage on the streets
    Then there is the disaster of the Coral reefs during Covid where govt implemented a policy of good will towards big Cruise ( yet to hear if big Cruise offered to pay for the damage done by their ships to the Coral reefs
    As B’s continue to blech toxins into the atmosphere from uncontrollable fires the long expected solution remains not to be expected

    Did Dr. Greenidge say flat out that the 1 percent was variable
    Why not
    That should have been his role in speaking the facts loud and clear
    Reason why people doesn’t rust govt because of their inability to speak the whole truth

  25. Oops above comment wrong thread

  26. Wellington St went up in blaze houses became inferno as a late arrival of the fire dept could not contain the blaze
    The sad part being this is another govt foul up taken into mind that the city of Bridgetown has historical artifacts along with the wooden homes
    The question most asked given the indepth history of the city and the need for the history to be preserved
    What was govt rush to remove the one fire dept and placed it miles away from the city

  27. @ac

    Your opinion conflicts with fire officials. What scientific research can you cite to support your comment?

  28. “time magement “is scientifically proven as being beneficial in such circumstances
    Old homes made of wood can be easily destroyed by fire which means that the time factor is important in locating and slowing down the blaze
    That too is a scientific fact

  29. @ GP,
    I am well, thank you. Yes, it is sad to witness the decline of little England. They believe that they are masters of their fate. So leave them be.

    You had passed a comment on African Americans on another post. We should never forget that their struggle made it easier for the likes of Africans and Caribbean’s to thrive both inside and outside of America. Tragically, African Americans have always been viewed as lesser beings within America when compared to the other two groups. This perception is a tragedy.

    You and your friend Yolande Grant can bear witness to this in the video below.

    I am still waiting for you and your main adversary on BU to find some common ground. Both of you are very intelligent people.

  30. “What was govt rush to remove the one fire dept and placed it miles away from the city….”

    The fire station is in the Pine…… a ‘stone’s throw’ “away from the city.”

    The Archives, which also has “historical artifacts,” is located in Black Rock, “along with wooden homes that can be easily destroyed by fire.”

    Going by your logic, a fire station should be built on the old Lazaretto’s compound or anywhere near the archives, according to you, “given the need for the history to be preserved.”

    How about building a fire station near The Garrison, St. Michael?

    The Museum “along with wooden homes that can be easily destroyed by fire” are located in that area.

    😂🤣😂🤣

  31. The old location was perfect the rush to move it was politically driven
    The big business mcgufgies on the south understood time management wouldn’t want to see their business turn into a towering inferno because a fire station was miles away in the city

  32. Facts

    One of the most extensive fires in recent City history, which ravaged the densely populated Wellington Street area on Sunday night, has served as a wake-up call for the community and authorities to urgently address long-standing issues and implement proactive measures to prevent another tragedy.

    Barbados today

  33. Yesterday, we alerted the blog about the projection of nuclear garbage into the sky which would make the Saint Thomas dump look like child’s play.

    Almost immediately afterwards, the American empire and her vassals in Western Europe have thrown away their frames to make sure Russia understood that they have nothing to do with the escalatory talk that the French and others were so involved.

    Indeed the French ambassador was the only Western senior diplomat was in the Kremlin today attended Putin’s sixth inauguration ceremony,this morning.

    The Poles lied that they have no intention to deploy troops in Ukraine.

    The Italians, which host the largest American military base, eagerly came out to assure Russia that they have nothing to do with such talk, from loose lips, which sink ships.

    And on and on.

    We’re not back to the position ante.

    Garbage in …………………… garbage out.

  34. “The old location was perfect the rush to move it was politically driven
    The big business mcgufgies on the south understood time management wouldn’t want to see their business turn into a towering inferno because a fire station was miles away in the city……”
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    I could not resist the temptation.
    You love to politicise issues.
    In 2017, the former DLP administration closed the Weston, St. James fire station.
    I’m sure you were NOT CONCERNED that “the big business maguffees on the west understood time management as well, and wouldn’t want to see their business turn into a towering inferno because a fire station was miles away in Arch Hall, St. Thomas.”
    And, you AGREED with then AG Brathwaite when he ‘sought to quell fears that the closure of the St. James station would place persons living in the north of the island at risk.’
    “…It is unfair and uncharitable for anyone to suggest that the people in the north are more at risk because of the closure at Weston. Two tenders will be here (at Arch Hall) continuously. With the [Barbados Fire] Academy you will actually have personnel here on a continuous basis,” Mr. Brathwaite stressed.
    ‘He assured the public that the safety of persons in the north of the island would be in no way compromised as a result of the closure of the west coast station.’
    So, isn’t it likewise “UNFAIR and UNCHARITABLE for YOU to SUGGEST that the people in the city are more at risk because” the fire station was relocated from Probyn Street to the Pine?
    🤣😂🤣😂
  35. Ah
    However the predominately black area of Wellington has now bear the brunt of a govt unwise policy facts
    When last has anyone heard of a fire of this magnitude in the St. James Weston area
    Fact one can bet if the Wellington area and its surrounding environ.was predominately white that station would have never been removed without a fierce fight from that community
    Or a guarantee that a new dept would have been built in proximity to the area
    The powers that be of that era when the station was built were wise
    Today wisdom has eluded govts like this govt
    David you ought to be ashamed rather than listen to what the people told Mrs. Weeks you disregard the the story and called it nonsense
  40. @ac
    Why do you assume the blogmaster didn’t listen to the interview? Marcia Weekes by her responses agreed with the feedback she got that there was no water in the fire trucks of the first responders. The blogmaster heard the official response and there is the feedback from residents. Why should the blogmaster believe one over the other without a good reason?
  41. IT IS THE HEIGHT OF NONSENSE TO MOVE EITHER OF THE FIRE STATIONS AT WESTON OR THE ONE IN BRIDGETOWN
    IT WAS STUPID TO DESTROY THE CHRIST CHURCH INFIRMARY TOO AS WELL AS THE ONE IN BECKLES RD WHICH IS SCHEDULED TO BE REPLACED
  42. Mrs. Weekes also spoke to another man who disputed the story being said about no water in the fire truck
    She never made a conclusion as to whether the story was correct about the fire truck not having water
    However she did stay with the story at some point asking the question about the fire truck not having water as it was obvious it was a story worth telling and getting to the bottom of why so many house went up in smoke
    The bottom line speaks of transparency which is also lacking in journalism
    Maybe Mrs Weekes journalistic style might be harsh but at the end of the day people must be told all sides and not one
    Those people interviewed were brave
    Please listen to the post from 7:02 carefully…… and we’ll determine whether it’s you or me who is “a bold face liar.”
    Man: Duh wuan move all uh we.
    Weekes: You think that…… you think that they want to move all of you? Why? Why? Why?
    Man: Cause duh doan want Black people ’bout hay when duh build all uh dese big buildings ’bout hay.
    Weekes: That’s sad. THAT’S WHAT I WAS SAYING TO MY HUSBANDS. I said I wonder. That is sad.
    Man: Duh burning down the places…… Black people places to get white people ’bout hay…… nuhbody cahn rob dum.
    Weekes: Cause why did they come without any water? The truck had no water.
    Based on the conversation, one could reasonably assume that “Marcia Weekes by her responses AGREED with the feedback she got.”
  44. Artexes that is your interpretation
    Her acknowledging the man statements does mean she agrees
    If her words to the effect was Of course yes she agree with his words then their would be concrete evidence to her thought process
    However she never made any such statement of agreement
    In one of the man comments he reference what he believed was a govt purpose or intent to not wanting the people residing in Wellington Street because of the new development of the Hyatt to which Mrs . Weekes said her thoughts was one of that which she said to her husband
    However your implication that of which Mrs. Weekes agreed that the water trucks absent of water was deliberate was a bold face lie
    The video content was mostly about the fire truck having no water and the slow response
  45. inferno.
  46. Last/Last
    RE: “However your implication that of which Mrs. Weekes agreed that the water trucks absent of water was deliberate was a bold face lie….”
    My friend, I did not imply anything.
    I simply provided the forum with a VERBATIM ACCOUNT of Weekes’ comments.
    Since I DID NOT respond, nor did I interpret, offered to explain or assumed what she meant, please explain to BU how I “implied Weekes agreed that the water trucks absent of water was deliberate,” and present the evidence to substantiate your claim?
    However, the mere fact YOU came to that conclusion ‘speaks for itself.’
    let’s hope that we don’t have a junkyard/recycling facility/garbage dump fire sometime involving one or more carelessly discarded or stored EV batteries. Lithium ion battery fires are notoriously difficult to extinguish since the chemical reaction within the burning battery generates its own oxygen supply. The fire burns extremely hot (compared to a gasoline/diesel fire), and even after the fire appears to be fully extinguished, the battery can, without notice, spontaneously burst into flame again, even after an extended period of quiet time. EV battery fires are also noticeable for the highly toxic smoke emitted,
