Your message to the BLOGMASTER was sent

Mia Mottley out-strategized all comers to win the recent general election by inflicting another 30-0 drubbing on a hapless Democratic Labour Party (DLP). The win is all the more incredible because it was achieved after a 3-year period of unprecedented economic challenges caused primarily by the ongoing pandemic AND the brought forward state of a weak economy.

Besides the chatter about the capacity of the DLP to reinvent itself to be seen as a legitimate choice of a government in waiting, the more immediate expectation is the shape of the new Cabinet and appointments to the Senate expected to be communicated this week. Prime Minister Mottley has signaled among other priorities this second tenure will focused on continuing transformative pursuits to improve how the country does its business.

In 2018 Mottley appointed 26 ministers with several parliamentary secretaries and consultants bolted on. That decision continues to evoke robust discussion pertaining to the insensitivity of the decision given the weak state of the economy. Mottley’s justification was that the perilous state of the economy and the workload required to rebuild the economy justified her decision. Her explanation was summed up in the phrase – many hands make light work. The blogmaster admits the mandate delivered last week probably had little to do with a large cabinet and more to do with a favourable perception of Mottley as leader of government at this time by voters compared to the alternatives on show.

Political pundits argue Mottley had the difficult job of managing 30 members of parliament coupled with executing government business efficiently. It explains her contentious decision to have appointed 26 members to the 2018 Cabinet. This time around it will be interesting to observe if she repeats the decision- no doubt with the Kingmaker’s blessing- to reappoint a large Cabinet.

Political morality requires Mottley to think carefully about the optics of of another bloated Cabinet to satisfy political expediency at a time many Barbadians are suffering. Mottley is aware of the hospitality sector where employees in the thousands were sent home or suffered reduced pay, middleclass and senior citizens who had to suffer deep haircuts to nest egg investments as a result of the debt restructure and generally a workforce that continues suffer because of significant contraction in the economy are the key considerations. An important trait of a good leader is to make decisions to demonstrate empathy.

@Skinner, why are we acting as if this current admin is actin in some startling new way to any previous admin!

This is what is truly confusing me by commentaries .

Every politician gives absurd sounding pretext for action and every political appointee will confound incredulity with equally absurd sounding remarks.

Why are u guys finding this particular episode so perverse … I am NOT validating any concept of itt worked so before so then it’s all right to do so now’… NO..

But in politics as in life we have to reasonable and fair … we can’t suddenly instill seeming new standards and hold this admin or anyone else to the higher ideals…just so!

So again I ask: WHAT is so different politically to that which we have not seen before (the constitutional. amendment obviously exempted)???

Then he will be appointed to represent the BLP-led government and NOT the youth of Barbados.

Of course the PM has every right and justification to appoint whomsoever she sees fit to meet her political agenda.

Why doesn’t she also appoint a member of the growing disabled community or even that of the LGBT who are entitled to vote also but has no ‘specific’ voice in Parliament?

Any representation of the youth across Barbados ought to be done via an Independent senator selected directly by the President in consultation with/advice of the PM or even the LoO, if need be.

  4. @ Miller who wrote ” LGBT who are entitled to vote also but has no ‘specific’ voice in Parliament? ”

You can’t get a more “specific” voice than a PM.

  5. William Skinner
I am missing no point. Your comment is illogical and stupid…period! You can carry on smartly.

  6. @Dee Word

The authors of the piece are drawing some heavy conclusions based on the ‘numbers’. When the blogmaster mentions unable to distill, it is about the softer analysis that examines behaviours and attitudes to voting by Barbadians. The qualitative type of analysis. The blogmaster has been an active observer of Bajan politics for a few years and there is a discussion to be had about voter apathy and cynicism to voting and more generally trust in the political directorate.

  7. @Dee Word

How can the PM appoint an independent senator? That is the job of the president.

  8. William Skinner Avatar

    @ DPD
I am not “ acting “ or comparing what happened with other administrations, I am saying simply that in my opinion this recent action is a pure political move on behalf of a well known supporter of her party on the pretext that it was some desire to see the youth involved. I don’t buy it. Simple as that.
    Peace

  9. @enuff

You are being uncharitable to William. The PM in her infinite wisdom will be recommending Khaleel to the Senator once the admin is completed. The resent is to give the youth segment a voice. What some are saying is that because he must toe the government line how can he at ALL times fairly represent that segment?

I have always found it interesting, while so many countries have evolved under the Westminster umbrella, and the lower house electoral systems have similarity, the same is not true for the Upper House/Senate.
NZ abolished the Senate many years ago. The Australian Senate is elected. Canadian senators are ALL appointed by the PM and for life (now retirement at 75). Many, due to the nation’s size, have ‘equality by geography’ in the Senate, versus ‘equality by population’, the latter reflected by seats in the lower house.
The broader Caribbean nations largely have a similar method of appointing Senators, X by PM, Y by Opposition and Z by President/GG, to terms which match that of the Lower House.
I therefore find it interesting this PM has now twice in 4 years, sought constitutional changes to permit Senate appointments. One might have thought if changing the age was important and needed, it would have been incorporated in the last changes a few years back?
Is this a lack of thought and foresight, or something else?

Now you understand why the miller is so pissed off with the ‘man’s’ lack of self-respect and downright propensity to lie.

Here he is arguing that the government is not entitled to a majority of senators in the Upper House.
    Is 12 no longer greater than 7+2? Isn’t 12>9?

Or is there a plan to clone what has happened in the HoA?

Why does he have to stoop so low to make himself look like the perfect political sycophant and supreme ass-licker always willing to commit intellectual hari-kari for his master or mistress who, at the end of the election game, would waste no time in throwing him under the bus as a form of enjoyment and entertainment for the very political class and the duopoly of friends.

He is strongly advised to heed the advice of Cardinal Wolsey:

“Had I But Served My God, With Half The Zeal I Served My [BLP Red] King!”

You can never find such a perfect representative right at the heart of government.

  15. From the whole discussion, I gather that BU commentators of all different colours are highly dissatisfied with the composition of the Senate. Indeed, the Senate is an undemocratic instrument of repression to secure White Shadow rule. They, together with the jumpsuit, the DLP, the dishonourable senator and other sinister forces, have sabotaged the Integrity and Anti-Corruption Act.

I therefore call for either the abolition of the Senate as a colonial instrument to ensure white supremacy or its transformation into a body subject only to the will of our Supreme Leader. In other words, either our Supreme Leader gets the right to determine all seats or I fear that soon angry citizens led by the National Youth Leader will storm the Senate. Whatever that means …

@David, re “How can the PM appoint an independent senator? That is the job of the president”

That’s why I was truly discombobulated … I actually read BU before the Nation or BdosToday and in this case didn’t go to either of them, thus as you say I was perplexed for just that reason. …. How could he be independant if it was a PM appointment and if he wasn’t then why were the commentators here lambasting his BLP creds as if he was!!!!

So @Miller specifically to ur note above and @Skinner to yours generally … I don’t buy this argument that “[t]hen he will be appointed to represent the BLP-led government and NOT the youth of Barbados.”

Gents…. BOTH are quite mutually INCLUSIVE. …

1)Remind me but didn’t Thomspon appoint the superbly capable Ms Ifill – who happened to be visually impaired.(blind in non PC terms) – to the Senate!

2.)Was she NOT an outstanding representative of all persons with physical and other challenges while being a DLP senatorial appointment….. Or am I missing something here!!!!

Guys I am at a LOST by this rhetoric…. Of course the man is a rabid partisan but he is also 18 years old and although he surely thinks beyond his tender years, he just as surely acts like those his age as well in terms of tech, trivia and so on. Are we REALLY saying that the lad will not be able to articulate issues pertinent to those like him while shewing his support for the party of his choice!

Come on now … we are being too partiansan-like in this overcharged environment.

  17. One should reasonably expect that the national constitution debate promises will touch the senate.

  23. How is the Senate defined in the Constitution?

Here is what the OAS version says.

    (1) The Senate shall consist of twenty-one persons who, being qualified for appointment as Senators in accordance with the provisions of this Constitution, have been so appointed in accordance with the provisions of this section.

    (2) Twelve Senators shall be appointed by the GovernorGeneral, acting in accordance with the advice of the Prime
Minister, by instrument under the Public Seal.

    (3) Two Senators shall be appointed by the GovernorGeneral, acting in accordance with the advice of the Leader of
the Opposition, by instrument under the Public Seal.

    (4) Seven Senators shall be appointed by the GovernorGeneral, acting in his discretion, by instrument under the
Public Seal, to represent religious, economic or social interests or such other interests as the Governor-General considers ought to be represented: Provided that before appointing any person under this subsection the Governor-General shall consult such persons as, in his discretion, he considers can speak for those interests and ought to be consulted.

  24. Same as last time.

There is a need to fabricate an opposition and find a leader!!

Otherwise it would appear to me no Senate can exist.

  29. I just telling you what the Constitution at the OAS says.

Has the Barbados Constitution been changed?

I thought the idea was to prepare a new one for the Republic after elections.

If it has not been changed then it remains the highest law in the land, any other law will be superceded by it.

No one is arguing against the proposed change to facilitate a ‘young’ voice to reflect and promote the views of young people.

But it cannot come from the elected government’s side in the form of a person who has shown himself to be exceedingly and rabidly partisan to one red political side (and view) only.

By all means appoint the youngster as a BLP-administration senator. But not under the guise of representing the youth of Barbados who can vote but not participate in the activities of Parliament.

Why not get another young person who is prepared to present a reasonably objective understanding of the challenges facing young people without having to wear red-tinted spectacles all the time as was seen in the rabidly blind support of the previous BLP administration in breaking the Law with respect to the appointment two deputies to the CoP and the concomitant arrogant disrespect and failure to apologise shown to Senator Franklyn for pointing out this major faux pas on its part.

We see nothing wrong with him being appointed a government senator; but clearly not in the capacity of representing the voice of youth of Barbados made up of varying political and non-political colours.

But the miller is prepared to turn a blind eye if he is also prepared to support any legislation to completely decriminalize the use of marijuana. Laws which afflict the youth in a most hypocritical and unfair way?

Why can older adults drink rum and smoke cigarettes by simply paying a few sin taxes but the youths have to dodge and hide from the police and the enforcers of Babylon when their light up their spliffs?

Would you then join the miller in rejoicing at his enlightenment and spiritual salvation?

The constitution will be changed to allow kk to sit as a government senator ( because of his age the amendment is needed?

On the other hand the president and any party as an opposition will also have the same ability to select an 18 yr old as a senator

Once the law is passed all parties will have the same ability

What so hard about that to understand?

  36. Here is the GOB website with a link to the Constitution.

It does not seem to work.

Try it and see, I may be wrong.

The OAS will have whatever Constitution exists until it is informed of the change.

If it is not informed of any change then no change happened!!

  37. The OAS will have the Constitutions of its member Governments as they exist now.

  38. Nobody want to read the const, the PM advised the AG is to address the matter. We wait to see what they come up with and hear the many lawyers resident.

  40. Why not accept that Barbados is now and for the second time a de facto ONE PARTY STATE.

    But…..

An option is to give 6 seats in the HoA to the second place finishers with the highest number of votes and they would be a closer to a real opposition as opposed to the contrived baloney that is about to take place.

and if you go to the ILO website you can also find the NIS Act. Has anybody in 15 years followed that law when it comes to any of the three reporting sections required?
So now you are going to argue about the “highest” law in the land.
If ‘low’ laws don’t matter, soon neither will ‘high’ laws.
I am only surprised the NIS Act hasn’t been altered to remove (retroactively) those reporting requirements, and replace them with “reporting at the discretion of the Minister of Finance”.
