Mia Mottley out-strategized all comers to win the recent general election by inflicting another 30-0 drubbing on a hapless Democratic Labour Party (DLP). The win is all the more incredible because it was achieved after a 3-year period of unprecedented economic challenges caused primarily by the ongoing pandemic AND the brought forward state of a weak economy.

Besides the chatter about the capacity of the DLP to reinvent itself to be seen as a legitimate choice of a government in waiting, the more immediate expectation is the shape of the new Cabinet and appointments to the Senate expected to be communicated this week. Prime Minister Mottley has signaled among other priorities this second tenure will focused on continuing transformative pursuits to improve how the country does its business.

In 2018 Mottley appointed 26 ministers with several parliamentary secretaries and consultants bolted on. That decision continues to evoke robust discussion pertaining to the insensitivity of the decision given the weak state of the economy. Mottley’s justification was that the perilous state of the economy and the workload required to rebuild the economy justified her decision. Her explanation was summed up in the phrase – many hands make light work. The blogmaster admits the mandate delivered last week probably had little to do with a large cabinet and more to do with a favourable perception of Mottley as leader of government at this time by voters compared to the alternatives on show.

Political pundits argue Mottley had the difficult job of managing 30 members of parliament coupled with executing government business efficiently. It explains her contentious decision to have appointed 26 members to the 2018 Cabinet. This time around it will be interesting to observe if she repeats the decision- no doubt with the Kingmaker’s blessing- to reappoint a large Cabinet.

Political morality requires Mottley to think carefully about the optics of of another bloated Cabinet to satisfy political expediency at a time many Barbadians are suffering. Mottley is aware of the hospitality sector where employees in the thousands were sent home or suffered reduced pay, middleclass and senior citizens who had to suffer deep haircuts to nest egg investments as a result of the debt restructure and generally a workforce that continues suffer because of significant contraction in the economy are the key considerations. An important trait of a good leader is to make decisions to demonstrate empathy.

  1. “many hands make light work”

The people want up to 30 ministers. There is nothing more to be said. A small cabinet would be against the will of the people and therefore undemocratic.

There are also quite pragmatic reasons for a large cabinet. This way our Supreme Leader can better control the DLP moles in the ministries. Also, the ministries can react more quickly to the demands of the pandemic and to the wishes of international investors.

  2. Mottley and her supporters should be thanking COVID voters Suppression and the vast majority of dlp supporters who did not vote
That is what the result of this 30-0 win entails
There is no.mandate for this govt to.holler about when the minority hands govt a win
A result such as this one will be recorded in history as a weakening of the democratic system in a small island having the potential of giving a single
    govt unlimited power
All.eyes should be following the day to day policies of this govt
As the PM has set a precedent in turning the Constitutional rights of voters on its head and first to be known since voters rights was achieved for all
There are interesting times ahead for this country and another first for a country not having an opposition if the PM so desires

    Agree
When they dlp.fix their house this type of sided voting would cease
It is an unfortunate that the blp loyalist themselves not having the majority supporters showing up to vote find some kind of triumphant celebration

  5. “It is an unfortunate that the blp loyalist themselves not having the majority supporters showing up to vote find some kind of triumphant celebration”

Low turnout was the opportunity to get over the last 30-0 win i mean loss instead of reinforcing it again
DLP are still stuck in a ditch

  6. @ David

Whether or not the voter turnout was small, the people who voted, exercised their democratic rights to do so. Those persons who did not also exercised their right not to vote.

The majority only have themselves to blame for not voting and will have to accept the mandate given to ‘government’ by the minority.

I cannot understand why some people are blaming the current administration for the 30-0, a situation over which it did have any control.

  7. 3.5 years after losing 30-0, DLP were preparing to get ready for a 2023 challenge with their best propaganda, but a surprise sneak attack caught them unaware and they now face 8.5 years in the wilderness. It is going to be a long 5 years watching as spectators.

Henry slams DLP’s decision to defer electing president

    Article by Barbados Today
    Published on
    January 23, 2022

Political strategist Hartley Henry has described as “madness” the Democratic Labour Party’s (DLP) decision to defer electing a president until April.

On Friday Verla DePeiza handed in her resignation as party president, two days after the DLP’s crushing 30-0 defeat at the hands of the Mia Mottley-led Barbados Labour Party (BLP) in the January 19 general election.

Following that announcement the DLP’s first vice president Steve Blackett told the media that a special conference would be convened in mid-April for an internal election for the post of president.

But speaking on the local current affairs programme Down to Brass Tacks on Sunday, Henry questioned that decision saying that the issue of leadership must be addressed now.

“The whole question of differing the question of leadership to April of this year is madness and anyone who is remotely connected will tell you this is the moment you must seize. You cannot allow the party to go into paralysis between now and April and don’t exist. You need to solve the issue of leadership now and the constitution does not provide for you to solve the issue of leadership because it does not provide for you to elect a political leader. In 2022 the constitution must be clear.

“The current constitution of the DLP does not provide for a leader to be elected and that is one of the fundamental problems I am trying to explain there,” he said.

Henry maintained that the DLP’s constitution needed to be amended in order to have “a popular mass based political leader elected”.

He added: “So that persons know what they are buying. You keep selling a product locked up in a brown paper bag and you do not know what is in there until you have purchased it.

“So the Prime Minister and Her Excellency the President are neither in a position next week to say John Brown is the political leader of the Democratic Labour Party. I am willing to approach John Brown to provide the names of two persons to serve in the Senate of Barbados because once again the Democratic Labour Party is operating in a 1958 mindset whereby you have now to go and elect a president … what you need is a political leader.”

  11. Those who are still members of the DLP and smart, serve the state party or switch to it straight away.

Chris Sinckler is obviously the smartest former DLP supporter.

That being said, I advocate campaign finance reform.

My proposal, of course, strictly neutral, as always:

A party receives 500K BBD per parliamentary seat per year as financial aid. Those who do not have a seat in parliament receive nothing. The Senate remains without financial aid.

Noble donors, sometimes called “white shadows”, may only donate to a party in the amount of the public financial aid. Those who do not have a seat in parliament receive nothing. Violation is punishable by up to 5 years imprisonment.

How do you know the DLP did not maneuver Ms. Mockley into the morass she finds herself in with no opposition, no constitution and no GG?

Remember who articulated the issue of no opposition back in 2018, Pedro Welch, with a DLP pedigree back to the beginning through his parents.

The DLP have had plenty time to strategize.

At one stage I reckoned Froon delayed the elections in 2018 to purposely set up the no opposition scenario.

Bringing him back to speak of the 10 glory years more or less sealed a fate which was of his/their own making.

It will be fascinating to see how a “PM” who has sworn to uphold the constitution (which no one knows if it even exists) operates from here on in.

Look at the text of the oath the “PM” swore!

The BLP strategy from what little is out there seems to be to invent one after Parliament is formed but there is obviously the opposing strategy of not letting Parliament form.

This may be a good one.

To me, the pretense is palpable and the sensible thing is for resignations in shame.

But which politician has any sense, it is all smoke and mirrors and make believe.

  13. Both parties have lost as a result of the game.

  21. @7:04
I like the statement but HH. After May 2018 the DLP went to sleep and despite their claim otherwise was caught still napping in December 2021.

With 0 seats and other 3rd parties present, I believe the DLP would increase it chances of being seen as the official opposition and reap any rewards if they are more organized and have defined leadership. At the moment, they are just another opposition party.

For the DLP, post election 2022 cannot be the mirror image of post election 2018.

  28. Bruno Major Reflects On His Spiritual Identity With Figment Of My Mind
The track was inspired by a profound and personal occurrence which Bruno details; “This song is a true story about a journey I took on a sofa in Los Angeles, that I consider to be one of the most formative experiences of my life. I travelled to a different dimension, one far more real than the ostensible reality presented to us on a daily basis. There, amongst impossible transcendent beauty, I was greeted by a female deity, who showed me the power and majesty of the universe and my mind, which of course are one and the same thing. Since this moment that lasted both forever and no time at all, I no longer fear death, and my life path is clear. Although there is no hope of describing what I saw that day in such a primitive and inadequate a medium as the written word, there is a depth and spirituality to music that can take me a little closer. If only you see what I could see.”

    Lyrics:
I travelled into deep space to see what I could find,
A purple angle led me to the universe inside,
Welcome to real world, not the dream you left behind,
That was all figment of your mind.

We flew amongst the patterns, Impossible designs,
They’d been there the whole time,
    hidden by my eyes.
If I’d had a body it surely would’ve cried,
But tears were a figment of my mind.

Waking with eyes closed from technicolour dreams,
Crystal kaleidoscopes were singing blue in green.
Realer than real in front of me,
If only you could see what I could see.

I was shown a few things I’d been getting wrong,
She told me I’m a good man and have been all along,
By the way I heard her say:
“There’s no such thing as time,
It’s all a figment of your mind.”

Waking with eyes closed from technicolour dreams
Crystal kaleidoscopes were singing blue in green,
Realer than real in front of me,
If only you could see what I could see.

I slowly found my body, colours began to fade,
I heard the piano playing a knowing serenade,
This world feels backwards to my open eyes,
Cos it’s all a figment of my mind.

The missing factor is trying to ride a horse from the past and paying little or no attention to the citizens of this country. The vision of a leader is inspired by listening to the concerns of the governed. A paradigm shift that some commenters and many politicians are ignoring.
The political, economic ,and social environments have undergone transitions. We need to ensure that policies , strategies and National objectives are synchronized.
This is where your vain search for a charismatic leader will fail. We are no longer sheep. Information and relevant data is more easily accessible; from which the Electorate makes his own inferences.

Your concern is valid BUT it does not address the requirement to have a leader who fit for purpose given current state.

The only characteristic that leader needs is an ability to gain consensus from his colleagues. The days of the maximum leader is over. The DLP does not need a leader, nor does it nee the organs of the party to tell Ms. Mockley they are not being part of the pretense.

Excellent political observation made there, Angela the ‘C’!

Instead of backing that born liar called Sink U, why not a former high flyer?

Maybe this is the appropriate time for Mascoll to play the role of the prodigal son and return to his ancestral moorings.

He will never realize OSA’s dream of being promoted to the Red general-in-waiting.

But you too must continue to look on the bright side.

For neither the red-coated BU political analysts or the 30 members of Parliament can continue to attack the DLP, or even you anymore, by going back to any lost decade the same way the previous DLP administration continued to blame its incompetence on the ever-lasting international recession.

In the upcoming long-winded Estimates debate whom would those 30 red members have to blame or attack to justify a week of NATO?

An imaginary Opposition sitting on the other side and all dressed in blue and with placards marked: ‘Blame it all on the pre-2018 ‘yellow’ team’?

Just let the sitting last just 2 days in order to ‘approve’ the IMF-dictated financial budget!

  41. I listened to Hartley Henry on the call in show yesterday and he was flaunting his access to the PM’s of both Dominica and Barbados as he informed the audience that he boasted that he speaks to them daily doling out advice; at one point he likened his role to an air traffic controller guiding the nation’s flights ( I thought he was going to say he was in the cockpit). I would think that Henry has his hands full in his role so why should the DLP take advice from someone whose function is to send the Party into oblivion? The last thing that the DLP needs is some knee jerk reaction to the resignation of its leader.

Wasn’t Henry a confidant of David Thompson? Perhaps he is just as liable for the state of the DLP today as any of its executive .

  42. as he informed the audience that he boasted S/B as he boasted to the audience

  43. @ David

You don’t have “to push the narrative of a divided DLP,” because their actions over the past few years clearly indicated that house has been divided for a very long time.

Let’s go back to 1986 after the death of Errol Barrow, when it was said Sandiford ‘slipped through’ to take leadership of the party.
The ‘rumblings’ continued until 1989 saw former Finance Minister Richie Haynes, Harold Blackman, Richard Byer and I think, ‘Ginger’ Bourne, defecting from the DLP to form the National Democratic Party.

A ‘no confidence motion’ was brought against Sandiford, which caused him to call elections in 1994, three (3) years before they were constitutionally due in 1996.

Further division came as a result of the ‘elders’ forcing Clyde Mascoll from the leadership in favour of David Thompson. Mascoll resigned as Opposition Leader and from the DLP…… and sat as an independent member of Parliament before joining the BLP.
And, remember, Thompson and Denis Kellman fought a ‘silent battle’ in Parliament after the DEMS won 2 seats, St. John and St. Lucy, in the 1999 general elections.

This ‘in fighting,’ in addition to former PM Owen Arthur’s ‘politics of inclusion’, saw an exodus of several young DEMS from the DLP, including Rudy Grant, Kerry Symmonds, Trevor Prescod, Owen Estwick, Joseph ‘Johnny’ Tudor and Ralph Thorne……… into the ‘open arms’ of awaiting Arthur and the BLP.

How about the ‘not so recent’ development concerning former PM Freundel Stuart and the ‘Eager 11?’

But, people would have to be extremely naive if they believe there isn’t any ‘in fighting’ within the ranks of the BLP as well. The ‘no confidence motion’ against Mis Mottley to ‘reinstall’ Arthur as Opposition Leader and to lead the BEES into the 2013 general elections…… and the video the DEMS love referring to, in which Arthur called Mottley a “despot,” are perfect examples.

Sir John, you Constitutional panties are showing with a big hole exposed.

The President (formerly GG) can appoint the two senators to the Upper Chamber as long as the necessary Constitutional amendment is passed with the needed 2/3rd majority in both houses.

The problem remains in the HoA (Lower Chamber) for it to function on a “day-to-day” basis as Constitutionally stipulated.

In the absence of any member prepared to make another Red Bishop move the same President would have to either appoint (unwillingly) a duly elected member to fill that role of the Leader of the Opposition as specified by the Constitution or herself fill the breach as the occasion arises.
