On October 3rd, 2021, Arthur Collymore addressed the below comment to me [Heather Cole].

If Phoenix crowdfunding is what Arthur Collymore is referring to, it was perfectly legal as we were in the processing of forming a non-profit.  One person benefits in a Ponzi scheme.   Our operation would have been a modern version of the Barbadian Meeting Turn, therefore benefiting everyone. 

A Barbadian website builder named Alvin Herbert developed a website for us.  It was a fraught with delays from the start.  He did not deliver the finished site on time and what he delivered was a shell and it did not complete our requirements.  When we complained, he removed the site from the Internet. 

The police in Barbados were contacted.   A Police Sergeant tried unsuccessfully to mediate the situation, but Alvin Herbert changed the terms and wanted us to pay him additional funds to complete the work.  I refused and I contacted the Minister responsible for entrepreneurship who referred the matter to the Public Counsel.  A complaint was filed however to date, the Tribunal has not met.  

Loosing over $2000.00 and the website devastated the group’s morale and that is what caused the group to fall apart. We have not been able to get another website built as yet.  If any scamming was done it was by Alvin Herbert.   

I even sent a copy of the draft proposal for Phoenix Crowdfunding to the Minister (Kerri Symmonds), asking if it could become operational in Barbados.  He said it was not his Ministry, but he could pass it on to the Ministry of Finance.  I have not received any response from that Ministry to date. 

My question for Arthur Collymore is why something to help the poor and unemployed is looked upon as a scam and why a plan to rob the Treasury of Barbados by Mark Maloney is not a scam?

 On a more positive note, if anyone out here has a reasonable solution for this website, contact me.  I am submitting the draft proposal for all to see.  There is nothing sinister contained therein.

    Prostate screening tests might include:

    Digital rectal exam (DRE). During a DRE, your doctor inserts a gloved, lubricated finger into your rectum to examine your prostate, which is adjacent to the rectum. If your doctor finds any abnormalities in the texture, shape or size of the gland, you may need further tests.
    Prostate-specific antigen (PSA) test. A blood sample is drawn from a vein in your arm and analyzed for PSA, a substance that’s naturally produced by your prostate gland. It’s normal for a small amount of PSA to be in your bloodstream. However, if a higher than usual level is found, it may indicate prostate infection, inflammation, enlargement or cancer.

    When Ms Cole posted the article on BU about the launch of this initiative, surprisingly only 7 persons responded, including myself with “no comment🤐”. Now there’s a whiff of “scandal”, over 100 comments. I must confess, however, that I am still trying to understand how $200 gets you $22,500 when nothing is being invested to earn a return; but I is a peabrain and mentally challenged. Phoenix reminds me of the DSS set up in Tdad, with a lil tweaking and maybe more Ponzi than Phoenix–to each his own. In closing, how is it Ms.Cole got the answers on how to fix every ill plaguing B’dos but can’t set up a “meeting turn”?🤣🤣

    I remember mention of plantation lands. I remember Baje pledging thousands with no strings attached and cussing me for taking time to think. Baje is not so foolish as to fall for $200 bringing a guaranteed $22,500.

    The saying, “If something seems too good to be true, it usually is” is one I have lived my life believing.

    What “meeting turn” are you talking about?

    Meeting turns pay back only what you put in.

    I assumed this post was about the plantation thing.

    More the reason to build your own site, you have control, but she should have asked the dude to pass the admin dashboard to her, then change the password, most people don’t have to ask, the understanding is that function belongs to the website owner…..and later you can customize to suit your agenda…

    @Heather I am sorry that you have met with these difficulties in your project.

    I read the Phoenix Crowd Funding document that you posted for download and I would like to offer some comments that I hope you will find helpful. The section titled Problem Statements is coherent, but the section titled Overview of the Solution makes no sense to me. I have post graduate qualifications in business and finance and have been working with internet ecommerce since 1993.

    You say that “Phoenix Crowdfunding Barbados is a crowdfunding platform” but that is not the business model that you are employing. The crowdfunding business model is to fund a project by soliciting many relatively small amounts of money from a large number of people, typically via the internet. It never includes a capital payout to the people from whom you have solicited money. In crowdfunding what they get ranges from a warm feeling and an email thank you, up to goods or services of the same value as the money they contributed; never more.

    What you have proposed here is, as you say, “similar to what was known traditionally as the meeting turn…” but your financial projections do not make sense to me. You say that for each person “only one contribution is made” in the amount of US$100… but in a meeting turn you must make multiple contributions on a weekly or monthly basis for it to function properly. The only thing that you must remember is that the money paid out can never exceed the money contributed. In order to reach the US$24,100 payouts that you anticipate, if payouts are made on a monthly basis, then you need 241 people participating, each of whom contributes US$100 each month into the future. In order for each member to receive one payout the program would have to run with no dropouts, missed contributions, or deaths among the membership for 241 months… that is 12 years and 1 month. At the end of this period each member will have contributed US$24,100, and been paid out US$24,100. There is no financial magic, just simple arithmetic.

    However, in the real world, there will be deaths, fraud, hard times, and a myriad of other obstacles to the flawless function of the system over a 12 year period.

    It is possible to manage a meeting turn via a website, but the cost of building, deploying, maintaining and upgrading the website would have to be deducted from the payouts, so each member would receive less than they had contributed. Such a website, since it has to manage and safeguard personal financial information, needs to be built with the same level of security as a bank website, and bank websites cost millions of dollars. Of course the banks have more than 241 customers, so the Phoenix website would cost less, but any credible tech company that actually has the capacity to deliver a secure financial website will quote you in the hundreds of thousands. There is no doubt in my mind that ALL the quotations you received were fraudulent if they were for less than $100k, so you can count your lucky stars that you were only defrauded of $2k.

    I hope that you find this information helpful because I know that you mean well.

    Wuh dat is what I know. I know nothing about e-commerce, website building or security, but I know old time stuff like meeting turns and they pay out only what you put in. It is simply a way of saving without interest. All one can expect is eventually to receive the sum total of what one “throws in”.

    There is no investment and so there can be no return on investment. It is not a money tree and so the money cannot grow.

    And even so any investment that guarantees a return is suspect. Investments are risky by nature to various degrees.

    A guaranteed return on an investment of such astronomical proportions is unknown on this earth.

    Such a return takes place only at a casino or lottery booth. This is known as gambling. It cannot be guaranteed.

    I assumed we were pooling resources to buy land and work it as a co-operative and that the website was about committing one’s self to investing a certain amount in the endeavour, not actually transferring the money. In other words, just a site for organizing the co-operative towards the acquisition of land for the agricultural project proposed in a previous submission.

    My bad!

    Well yesterday all 7 Independent Senators supported the constitution amendment bill, paving the way for Bdos to move to a Republic. After snatching 30+ wigs and your weave in 2018 despite the many arrows thrown at her–LEC, tax exemption and the Stadium Rd onslaught, I don’t think PM Mottley needs any advice from me. I read on the other blog that she/BLP got 71% of the votes on the BU poll. That % is close to the 73% achieved in the 2018 election; and, if true, portends unpleasantries for your digestive system. With comments on BU dominated by the likes of you and others opposed to the government, clearly ‘less is more’. It therefore appears that Verla may more be in need of such advice than Mottley.🤣

    You keeping me from my morning walk! Did the PDP exist prior to the last Election? The PDP is an afterthought of the Bishop when he made the money grab ably assisted by the PM. You may recall that the PM had some thought of changing the Constitution following the BLP’s overwhelming victory to allow the Party with the largest number of votes after the victorious Party to become the official Opposition. Atherley saved her from that predicament when he was overlooked in the “many hands make light work” cabinet.

    Having been given the brass ring, Atherley came up with a name but that doesn’t make a Party. My reading of Caswell says he has an independent streak and he won’t be reined in by the Bishop or anyone for that matter so if his position runs contrary to the Bishop’s that’s par for the course.

    Bottom line the PDP exists on paper after the next Election when Atherley is put out to pasture it will be kaput.

    I sleep very well. You can continue to dwell in Wonderland. My reference to the Independent senators had nothing to do with their independence. In 2018 I found it strange when 2 former board members under the DLP were appointed. Then I read an article in the newspaper which prompted me to go to the Constitution and it reads:
    “Seven Senators shall be appointed by the Governor General, acting in his discretion, by instrument under the Public Seal, to represent religious, economic or social interests or such other interests as the Governor-General considers ought to be represented”.

And on the other, you qoute from a monarchical constitution to justify a political game play which has and will always keep the status quo as is. Therein lies a stark contradiction informed by political obedience to party. A contradiction of which cultural development is impossible.

    @David, in everything we do these days the level of scrutiny is intense and when we specifically engage the public by offering our ideas (plans, thoughts, beliefs) for their consumption we MUST take the lashes when we screw up even as we court love and acceptance.

    As I said prior I did not engage with or read the original Cole team proposal but the brickbats re the contract disputes with the site developer caused me to have grave misgivings on the level of competence brought to the project.

    That is not a critique of Ms Cole’s character or integrity simply a statement of fact that there was NOT proper work done on the foundational areas to make the project a success … and reading above 1) the apparent disconnect by some bloggers about exactly what was being proposed and/or confusing different offerings from Ms Cole and 2) the commentary by @PLT, it’s clear the project did indeed lack the needed gravitas.

    I repeat what I said earlier: often projects/problems are brought to the public TOO EARLY … so I wonder if that’s a deliberate ploy by many to get further input from public comments, to drive interest for new investors or some other marketing thrust!

    It is not enough to simply mean well or to be honest we must carefully offer solid and purposeful solutions that meet or exceed the standard tests for presentation … as we saw even very experienced businessmen make colossal mistakes (Baloney for sale anyone!) … but every such careless crash creates more doubt to a weary and too wary public!

    BTW, have you been following that Thernos case … the former CEO of Safeway (big supermarket chain in US) called Ms Holmes one of the most charismatic business folks he had meet … and I recall another article where one of her professors at Stanford (where she was a chemical engineering wunderkind before she drooped out to open her later to be known SCAM blood testing startup) sang her praises well.

    The point simply is that everyone is awesome until they aren’t… we can’t go by their charisma, smarts or technical nous … only by the facts of the product/program.

    That Theranos debacle is unfortunately par for course in modern society where investment funds abound and lots of truly smart, very charming (beautiful, sweet mouth, dynamic) young wunderkinds are eager to be ‘influencers’ for our attention.

    We have to all do our ‘due diligence’.
