On October 3rd, 2021, Arthur Collymore addressed the below comment to me [Heather Cole].

If Phoenix crowdfunding is what Arthur Collymore is referring to, it was perfectly legal as we were in the processing of forming a non-profit.  One person benefits in a Ponzi scheme.   Our operation would have been a modern version of the Barbadian Meeting Turn, therefore benefiting everyone. 

A Barbadian website builder named Alvin Herbert developed a website for us.  It was a fraught with delays from the start.  He did not deliver the finished site on time and what he delivered was a shell and it did not complete our requirements.  When we complained, he removed the site from the Internet. 

The police in Barbados were contacted.   A Police Sergeant tried unsuccessfully to mediate the situation, but Alvin Herbert changed the terms and wanted us to pay him additional funds to complete the work.  I refused and I contacted the Minister responsible for entrepreneurship who referred the matter to the Public Counsel.  A complaint was filed however to date, the Tribunal has not met.  

Loosing over $2000.00 and the website devastated the group’s morale and that is what caused the group to fall apart. We have not been able to get another website built as yet.  If any scamming was done it was by Alvin Herbert.   

I even sent a copy of the draft proposal for Phoenix Crowdfunding to the Minister (Kerri Symmonds), asking if it could become operational in Barbados.  He said it was not his Ministry, but he could pass it on to the Ministry of Finance.  I have not received any response from that Ministry to date. 

My question for Arthur Collymore is why something to help the poor and unemployed is looked upon as a scam and why a plan to rob the Treasury of Barbados by Mark Maloney is not a scam?

 On a more positive note, if anyone out here has a reasonable solution for this website, contact me.  I am submitting the draft proposal for all to see.  There is nothing sinister contained therein.

    Heather…..there are credible website developers all over the place, try one in US.

    there are also a lot of scam artists, regrettably Barbados is the last place i personally would look for one…. I just built one myself and it took 8 days…you can do it yaself if you have the time, if you do, all you will need is a web designer to complete the project…that can also be costly, even more so….

    We had commended your efforts but also knew that Black people, and Black Bajans especially, are some of the most difficult people to deal with when trying to do anything where no White people or Black “respectable” elites are involved.

    Firstly, your website builder, like most Bajans, have no commitment to contract, oral, written or implied.

    Secondly, there is no national ethos that once a commitment is given tasks will be efficiently completed or we’ll die trying.

    Thirdly, there is always the self defeating assumption, like with Collymore, that one is a failure unless success is first achieved.

    Fourthly, your project, whether you believe this or not is and will be bedeviled by our history, wrapped mentalities and gossip mongering by the uninformed.

    And we could go on.

    These therefore make it nearly impossible to work seriously with Black people but we must continue to give maximum efforts, warts and all.

    There is so much distrust about when black people try to mobilize resources. One should ask what due diligence Heather pursued in the matter.

    It’s OK to pursue DD as a formal process.

    However, we’ve found that serious people operating in real “communities” operate as informally as can be.

    Then again, we have no real communities, in most places.

    and that’s why i would never entrust such with a local, not because of lack of skills, but because they have no concept of time sensitive delivery or deadlines unless a minority is standing over them with an invisible whip with attached threats…..if it’s a Black person like themselves, even if ya payign them millions…they show nonchalance and disrespect, ya don’t get the same level of commitment or competence….another self destructive behavior derived from negative socialization..

    and then some. i had to engage a very efficient young man living in Trinidad for web design.

    Barbados will lose out on a lot of money because of those who display those twisted attitudes..

    Before the usual bashing- already started- we need to get some more information.

    How was the young black website builder selected? Does he have a track record in the line of business?

    What caused the delays? For example were the delays caused by last minute request for changes to original design?

    Some more questions out there in the interest of balance before we jump in with the usual bashing.

    Absolutely… just as we would ask what diligence Maloney pursued in that debacle or what investigation Tom or Millicent did when a lawyer was needed for their real estate matter or whatever.

    It is terribly distressing that a general perspective persists that Black folks are any less trustworthy than others when in fact the base phrase “let the buyer beware” is known more from its Latin origin than from Yoruba, Xhosa or Zula in Nigeria!

    Dishonest con artists are born every day and although it seems that Nigeria is the birth place for many 😇, the simple facts of life advise that’s a fallacy: some Nigerians have simply perfected the graft and dishonesty originated and seen grandly by white folks in the US (particularly) for generations.

    There are millions of websites out there and thousands done in Bim by competent, honest developers … the fact that the author found a bad actor is a knock on her group’s lack of diligence and contract controls NOT on ‘all a we’.

    Just as how Maloney’s folly paints a picture of his lack of proper business basics and is not a hit on the nous of any one else!

    A crowdfunding website does not appear to be that common. There were not many responses to our request. Most were in India and were too expensive to start. The cost was an underlying factor.

    WHEN I STARTED AS A YOUNG DR IN PRIVATE PRACTICE IN A RURAL PART OF THE COUNTRY I WAS ACCUSED OF SENDING PEOPLE TO HOSPITAL FAST

    I WAS SEEING A NUMBER OF POOR FOLK WHO HAD PREVIOUSLY ATTENDED A WHITE LORD IN HORSE HILL. THEY ALL WERE ON THE SAME LITTLE WHITE PILL I REFERRED ALL OF THEM THAT HAD HEART MURMURS TO CARDIOLOGY CLINIC AT THE FIRST VISIT—–AND NOT AFTER I HAD SUCKED THEM DRY.     I caught this late so a quick response.

    Maybe, Ms Cole and her managers of this crowd funding project needed to get THEIR information together before coming to market!

    I have not read the proposal so have no idea what it’s about … my comments are about the PROCESS not the project itself.

    Why are we even at this point really… publicly.

    This is a contract dispute of the type experienced daily between parties … what benefit all of us offering comment to its resolution when that does nothing to get a solution….

    My point here is that social media is used too quickly … and often that resolves NOTHING.

    And also bro, what of the “accusation regarding the crowdfunding operation.”

    Ms Cole produced a public interest program “to help the poor and unemployed”, she said. Awesome!!!

    No disrespect Ms Cole, but shouldn’t you and team get the program up and running and show those for whom it’s intended how it is better than any of the hundred others already in the market place !

    As the Blogmaster states your comment in INSTRUCTIVE … That screamed … CAUTION, as you were obviously trying something not easily done or manageable (without major back-end security, thus costly).

    So again no disrespect intended but I would simply say that having “sent a copy of the draft proposal for Phoenix Crowdfunding to the Minister (Kerri Symmonds), asking if it could become operational in Barbados” is rather innocuous and the further fact that “the Ministry of Finance […] have not [responded]” is generally par for course in matters like that.

    I get it that this was noted moreso as a retort to Mr Collymore’s accusations than as a some marketing explanation but the fact remains that maybe the process was cart-before-the-horse !

    If the objective was to sensitize Bajans of the wonderful proposal then that’s achieved big time … if it was to get a new charitable program in place as a help during the pandemic then that misfired … if this a reassessment stage for new partners, then I wish you and team well!

    I would completely agree with the curmudgeonly doc that your intentions are super admirable … I am just perplexed by your process expectations particulalry after your team realized that “[a] crowdfunding website does not appear to be that common.     A little advice from a lowly blogmaster who has some idea about these kinds of transactions.

    You correctly stated the specs on a crowdfunding website requires ‘different’ skills from a webbuilder. You should have formed a small committee with a cross section of skill sets to review the submissions for the job. To select a supplier on the basis of mainly cost is flawed. Recommendation from a one source is not acceptable. There is more that can be written but will leave it there because we know your heart is in the right place.

    Have you thought about having a lawyer send Collymore a letter to ask for an apology?

    websites are not cheap, i have close relations would charge 10K for a customized site and ya get what ya paid for in 2 WEEKS….not a day over that time..

    even if the price, and i presume without assuming that is what HE CHARGED….is $2,000…the timeline and competence of delivery should still be the same…

    Get real people. Many established businesses with central control are “taken” every day. It’s par for course. Far less a venture with broad participation.

    If you want to be entrepreneurial there is no way to totally avoid these kinds of losses as much as one may try to mitigate them.

    Risks people, risks! No progress is possible because our people see themselves as too risk intolerant.

    Agree with your comment generally but this is not a risk taking issue. This is more about people involved not following a standard process to identify a fairy routine transaction. If the blogmaster had input given the lack of resources and expertise a cookie cutter website should have been considered to mitigate the risk mentioned.

    ONCE AS A VERY YOUNG DR I WAS DOING A LOCUM TENENS (I.E FILLING IN) FOR A CERTAIN DR IN TOWN AREA IN 1982

    I SAW AN ANTE NATAL PATIENT AND OFFERED HER A FOUR WEEK COURSE OF FEFOLATE. WITHOUT ASKING ME THE COST SHE TOLD ME IT WOULD BE TOO EXPENSIVE. I ASKED HER WHAT SHE EXPECTED TO PAY, AND WHAT SHE NORMALLY. PAID.

    SHE TOLD ME SHE USUALY PAID $35 FOR EACH VISIT…….TO THE NURSE AS SHE LEFT. .BUT THE DR FOR WHOM I WAS FILLING IN HAD TOLD ME THAT HIS FEE WAS $2O, AS WAS THEN SPECIFIED BY THE TARIFF PUT OUT BY BAMP IN 1981.

    I KEPT ASKING THE PATIENTS AS THEY CAME IN, AND DISCOVERED THAT THE NURSE WAS POCKETING $15 PER PATIENT, ALL DAY AND THE DOCTOR DID NOT HAVE A CLUE

    THE NURSE WAS NOT WHITE OR NIGERIAN OK? IT WAS A PREVIOUSLY POOR BLACK WOMAN SCAMMING THE MANY POOR BLACK PEOPLE WHO WENT TO THAT WHITE DRS OFFICE. SHE WAS DOING BETTER THAN THE DR, WHO WAS PAYING HER AS WELL AS RENT.

    I was thinking of not mentioning this but why shouldn’t I?

    My son built his own website for his online business. He has actually been selling his profucy among his peers from the age of thirteen and though it is hard for me to come to terms with an eighteen year old serious entrepreneur as I laughingly call him, I guess that is what he is.

    When my son has work to do, you can call his name and he does not hear you. If he has a deadline to meet, I have to force him to stop and eat. We are about to build him a home studio where he can put up his “Do not Disturb” sign to prevent me from interrupting him.

    Last week when I asked him if he had delivered to a customer what he had received a deposit to do, he said, “Ever since, Mother! Do you think I do not know what I am doing?”

    You need to stop painting all of us with the same nasty brush.

    The mad woman is always attempting to nag about the importance of honouring even verbal contracts and she has raised her son so well that she is always getting slapped down.

    Incidentally, he gets contacted by people over and away who try to con him to release his work without first paying.

    He also was plagiarised by somebody in America who took his ad sample and reworked it. Posted to his site. Put a copyright on it too. Disabled comments to shut out my son. I forgot to ask my son if the complaint he lodged delivered any results.

    Poor Donna has no clue how these things work online.

    @ At David, he is a BLP Acolyte. That is how this started in the first place. Hence his quest to find dirt on me since I posted on Facebook regarding the vaccine scam. He was one of those that defended Mr. Abrams when he got up and lied to the people of Barbados.

    This is now twice that we have seen Ministers to this. First Abrams, now Ms Bradshaw.

    @GP some people are just scum. A detailed list of requirements were given and we have several meetings to ensure that we were on the same page.
    What makes no sense is to have a Public Counsel that takes complaints and no Tribunal to settle disputes. It seems to have become the hallmark of Government.

    nothing is risk averse

    my book cover was totally costly, but the young person knew if he did a good job, he was going to get another 8 or 9 other jobs…AND FREE ADVERTISEMENT…so he delivered…and he had the discipline to make sure the job was superb……and i have to admit…he got the job done and could design a cover for every title i create…

    that is how people have to look at jobs given them by others no matter who it is……the opportunity to excel and get RECOGNITION which in turn generates more jobs…etc..

    Now I think of it, I did still have a little something to teach my son.

    I asked him if he had checked with the young man for feedback re satisfaction. He replied that if he had not been satisfied he would have contacted him.
    I replied that it would be better for him to ask.

    He said he saw the young man online using the product so he must have been satisfied.

    Still better to check, I think. The personal touch!

    When you first introduced the idea on BU, I was bashed for taking time to think about it. Then, in my own time, I committed to joining you. Now I understand why updates were not forthcoming.

    I have to agree with you.

    Practicing good business ethics suggest if the web designer was asked to provide a service that falls outside his scope of expertise, he should’ve referred the customer to a designer who specializes in developing the particular design that was requested.

    According to Ms Cole, “a complaint was FILED (with the Office of Public Counsel), however to date, the Tribunal has not met.” Unfortunately, rather than waiting until the Tribunal met to determine an outcome based on evidence presented by both parties, she decided to publish her ‘side of the story’ on social media, including a photograph of Mr. Herbert.

    The ‘Court of Public Opinion’ has essentially found Mr. Herbert ‘guilty,’ WITHOUT hearing ‘his side of the story’………….. a right that would be afforded to him during the Tribunal’s hearing.

    In MY opinion, since a complaint filed in the matter between her and Mr. Herbert, I believe Ms Cole should have dealt specifically with the accusations leveled at her by Arthur Collymore, as outlined and substantiated in the copy of his Facebook message to her.

    Ohhh, before the usual suspects jump out to ‘talk shiite,’ I’m NOT INSINUATING Ms Cole is misrepresenting the facts relative to the business arrangement between her and Mr. Herbert.

    I prefer to bring a level of fairness to any type of situation, especially those in which two or more parties are involved.

    The onus here was on Heather and her company to perform rigorous DD. Scammers or incompetents will not volunteer to excuse themselves .

    WHY?
    WELL HE HAD EMPLOYED THE MAN -AN ELDERLY VINCENTIAN- TO DO SOME WORK ON AN OLD LARGE PROPERTY HE HAD RECENTLY BOUGHT. THE MAN FINISHED EARLY. AND WHILE WAITING FOR MY FRIEND TO RETURN HOME, PROCEEDED TO WEED AND CLEAN UP ALL AROUND THE PLACE.

    MY FRIEND SAID HE HAD NO CHOICE BUT TO FIND THE MONEY TO PAY HIM TO STAY ON AND DO ALL THE REMAINING TASKS ON HIS PROPERTY THAT NEEDED DOING

    WHEN HE CAME TO WORK FOR ME I FOUND HIM TO BE EXCEPTIONALLY HONEST, PUNCTUAL AND HARDWORKING

    System Development as a part of the Software Development Life Cycle often includes open ended problems issues bugs design flaws etc which need to be addressed during testing and user acceptance stages before sign off and implementation. This also occurs with consultants implementing and configuring off the shelf software packages like ERP Enterprise resource planning products from established brand name solutions. Third world and First world countries often invest in IT projects which fail or are delayed beyond estimates forecasts costs etc. These type of problems are industry standard but shortchanging and not paying developers as agreed is fraudulent.

    However, I read two contributions from the SAME individual, to this, Ms Cole’s article, in which the person wrote:

    ………. “there are credible website developers all over the place, TRY ONE in US. there are also a lot of scam artists, regrettably Barbados is the LAST PLACE i personally would look for one.”

    ………. “and that’s why i would never entrust such with a LOCAL, not because of lack of skills, but because they have no concept of time sensitive delivery or deadlines unless a minority is standing over them with an invisible whip with attached threats….”

    The intellectual and most intelligent person on BU does realize they’re not only “painting ALL stay-at-home Bajans with a broad brush,” but DIVIDING and INSULTING them as well.

    there is a certain work ethic that GOT LOST between the 70s and the 2000s…that our foreparents had prior to that , but somewhere along the line it got corroded when lying politicians started crooning about first class and world class without putting the systems in place TO RETAIN the discipline…so then it turned into a free for all….even in the construction industry and other places where the customer comes first is no longer a thing….rob the customer first is mostly the motto.

    IT WAS NOT THE ONUS OF INNOCENT UNKNOWING FOLK WHO CAME TO MY DOORS TO DO DUE DILIGENCE BOUT NUTTIN

    THEY CAME TRUSTING ME THAT I KNEW WHAT I WAS DOING THAT I CARED ABOUT THEM AND THAT I WOULD DO THE RIGHT THING…….AND THAT HONESTLY IS WHAT I DID

    AND I DID THAT IN ALL THE PLACES I WORKED WHETHER PRIVATELY OR IN DE PUBLIC SERVICE.

    MEDICINE THUS BECAME MY HOBBY

    I USED WHAT EVER MONEY I GOT AND PUT IT INTO REAL ESTATE BECAUSE I NEVER EXPECTED TO GET RICH PRACTICING MEDICINE… AND MY GOD BLESSED ME

    I STILL HAVE A NOTE BOOK SOMEWHERE BACK HOME OF FOLK WHO OWED ME MONEY FOR MY TIME AND FOR MEDICINE I GAVE THEM

    BARBADOS WILL NEVER BE ANY BETTER
    AND OUR POOR FOLK WILL GET EVEN POORER BECAUSE EVEN THE POOR ARE SCAMMING THE POOR AND MORONS ABOUT TALKING SHITE BOUT DOING DUE DILLIGENCE

    WHY NOT STRESS THAT ALL SHOULD BE SEEKING TO DO RIGHT?

    MY FIRST SON WENT TO FIX COMPUTERS IN A WHITE MAN PLACE ABOUT 25 YEARS AGO . HE APPARENTLY DID THE RIGHT THING AND CHARGED A FAIR PRICE.
    THE WHITE MAN REFERRED HIM ALL OVER THE PLACE TO HIS KIND.
    EVENTUALLY HE ENDED UP WORKING IN DE MAN’S FIRM

    HE QUIT WENT AWAY FOR FIVE YEARS ON HIS RETURN THE SAME WHITE MAN GAVE HIM A JOB WITH TRANSPORTATING

    HE QUIT AGAIN AND WENT WORKING ELSEWHERE IN THE TOURIST INDUSTRY
    WHEN THAT PLACE WAS AFFECTED BY COVID, WUH YOU TINK HE DID?
    HE WENT BACK TO THAT FIRM AGAIN AND WAS EASILY HIRED
    WHY? BECAUSE HE HAD A TRACT RECORD OF DOING WHAT WAS RIGHT
