The report coming out of St. Vincent that a citizen felt emboldened to pelt an object at Prime Minister Ralph Gonsalves and in the process endanger his life and destabilize the country is reprehensible. We may have contrary political views but it does not mean we should disregard the fact Gonsalves’s Unity Labour Party (ULP) is a democratically elected government. What example are we setting for our children? Increasingly in the Caribbean we are witnessing behaviours associated with TV scenes depicting public disturbances from over in away. Another example of our small open societies in the Caribbean susceptible to external influences. The English speaking Caribbean has earned a reputation through the years as an area of peace (comparatively speaking) with Grenada the outlier. What happened in St. Vincent this week is an ominous sign for the region given we are battling similar issues. The lyrics of the great calypso Caribbean Man penned in 1979 should serve as a reminder.

One race (de Caribbean man)
From de same place (de Caribbean man)
Dat make de same trip (de Caribbean man)
On de same ship (de Caribbean man)
So we must push one common intention
Is for a better life in de region
For we woman, and we children
Dat must be de ambition of de Caribbean man
De Caribbean man, de Caribbean man

The world is struggling to protect citizens during the pandemic. It is reported over 4 million people have died since the outbreak of Covid 19. The virus has had the effect of stalling the global economy and in the process crippled Small Island Developing States (SIDs) like St. Vincent, Barbados and others. Before the pandemic our economic and social landscape was under stress. As developed and undeveloped countries respond to outbreak after outbreak of Covid 19, public health policy to fight the virus has not earned the trust of some members of the public. The issue has escalated to a point where the rights of individuals are challenging government’s obligation to enforce an effective national health policy. Members of the medical fraternity are divided, governments have been administering different approaches, individuals are conflicted on the best options to take to fight Covid 19. Unfortunately the matter has been politicised and the voice of the scientists have been trivialized. There will always be those who are anti this and anti that- this has been the case from time immemorial.

To ask for calm at a time various interest groups (including political parties) prefer to engage in rambunctious behaviour will be a struggle. One suspects it will get worse before it gets better. Many of our islands support service economies and will be directly impacted based on our ability to curb Covid 19 infections and in the process prevent failed state status. How long can our governments continue to pay the salaries of bloated public service employees. How long will private sector companies draw down on reserves and declining rate of returns on equity? Is the proverbial crap is about to hit the fan?

The Barbados government is currently working on a legal document to consider mandatory vaccinations that was promised to key stakeholders yesterday. Yesterday CNN in the USA fired 3 unvaccinated employees who entered the workplace violating policy. Buckle up!

The blogmaster thought the following read a useful exercise, a break from the vitriol.

Mandatory vaccination, including for COVID-19, can be ethically justified if the threat to public health is grave, the confidence in safety and effectiveness is high, the expected utility of mandatory vaccination is greater than the alternatives, and the penalties or costs for non-compliance are proportionate. I describe an algorithm for justified mandatory vaccination. Penalties or costs could include withholding of benefits, imposition of fines, provision of community service or loss of freedoms. I argue that under conditions of risk or perceived risk of a novel vaccination, a system of payment for risk in vaccination may be superior. I defend a payment model against various objections, including that it constitutes coercion and undermines solidarity. I argue that payment can be in cash or in kind, and opportunity for altruistic vaccinations can be preserved by offering people who have been vaccinated the opportunity to donate any cash payment back to the health service.

  4. MIA is given ultimatum or else

    On the march
CLARKE: WE HAVE FINANCIAL BACKING TO TAKE ISSUE TO CCJ, ICJ
    By Emmanuel Joseph
Declaring that they have the numbers and influence to bring about change, an activist group of anti-vaxxers and antimandate activists has given the Mia Mottley administration an ultimatum to respond to a two-month-old written request to discuss how the COVID-19 jab is administered.
Coordinator of the Steering Committee for the Barbados Concerned Citizens (BCC), Winston Clarke, warned Monday that if he did not get a response by Wednesday to the letter sent to Prime Minister Mottley for a dialogue on possible mandatory vaccinations, the BCC will be ramping up its civil actions on several fronts.
Buoyed by a weekend demonstration in which an estimated 2 000 people participated, Clarke declared that the 4 700 people who signed up to support the protest walk against vaccine intimidation at the weekend was only the tip of the iceberg. He said he expects more than 10 000 people to heed the next call-out if the Government fails to meet the deadline.
The activist also put the Government on notice that the group has the financial backing to fight this issue all the way to the Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ) and even to the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in The Hague.
While the CCJ is the final appeal court for Barbados, it was not immediately clear what legal path would be open to the ICJ, whose dual role is to adjudicate legal disputes submitted to it by member states and give advisory opinions on legal questions referred to it by authorised international organs and agencies.
Clarke told Barbados TODAY: “They can expect that if they do not have dialogue with us soon that the people will come out again and in vast numbers. This is only the smoke. I am not giving them a long period of time. I am not willing to go through a war of attrition with the Government where they will stretch us out where they have the dollars.
“We have people who are supporting us too…. We have people with long pockets also. They are people with businesses who were in the walk, who are against it [mandatory vaccines] also.
“The steering committee has support from the chapters in Canada and England.
So they are in for a long fight and the papers are already drawn relative to taking them to court. We are just waiting to see if they will take too long; we will take the Government to court. If we feel there is partisanship in Barbados, we will take them to the regional court and take them to the international court too. We are prepared to do it… and it is not a problem of finances because we have it and people are making donations all the time towards it because this is something that people feel very strongly about,” he added.
Clarke said while the group wants other matters such as the transition to the republican form of government and high gas prices addressed, the possibility of making vaccines mandatory was a matter of life and death.
He said all the group wants is to give its input on any pending legislation or policy regarding administering of the vaccine in situations where people may be forced into taking the jab.
“All we need is a chance to have a dialogue with the PM and the CMO (Chief Medical Officer),” said Clarke. “You come around and have a chat with us when it is campaign time… election time and ask us to make a choice. So why can’t we have a choice now? “What I am doing, though, is I am writing every minister in Parliament and asking them for their opinion about what is going on and if they are aware of how their constituents feel. I am willing to hold Zoom meetings to facilitate them interacting with their constituents and then we will go from there.”

Three years and counting the misery index is at a level red
Joblessness and homelessness is on the rise
Food prices along with basic home care products are going through the roof
Gas and othet fuel prices are overboard
The masses are being forced by big business to take vaccination or lose their jobs
A govt sailing out to sea with no life rafters

    Time would be your enemy
We are prepared to march again

politics has dumbed down to the lowest common denominator and become bullshit versus good shit

Government last night refuted suggestions that it was trying to force people to get vaccinated against COVID-19.

This was stressed by Acting Attorney General Wilfred Abrahams at Alexandra School in St Peter during the first in a series of town hall meetings on COVID-19 vaccines and testing.

Responding to a question posed by an online participant who asked how the final decision will be made on whether the vaccines will become mandatory, Abrahams said: “Government does not have a policy position as it stands now in respect of mandatory vaccination of anybody.”

He added that people’s rights had to be respected and preserved.

Now pray tell how many of them can stand forceful against a global network of anti-vaxxers
As a matter of fact if businesses choose to fire its best employees
The employer stands an even greater chance of losing customers since the business quality level of good service might deteriorate
Many will try but the economic backlash for them could be a hit in their bottom line because of poor quality and service

  10. @ Ac using his/her mind

    Get wise
Workers are dispensable and are liabilities not assets

  14. “Anyone who believes that letting go of long term employees is a good business management policies has no idea of the connection between the employee and customer service. The lost goes both ways in effect customers become attached to both quality and a recognized faces.”

    Hmmmmm……..

It’s clear you, and some other contributors to BU, don’t know when to quit ‘while you’re ahead.’ Rather than make your points, then taking a rest to refocus and THINK about how you plan to further continue addressing the issue, you prefer to go on and on and on and on, with monotonous regularity, until you eventually descend into the ‘realm of absurdity.’

You’re essentially suggesting, FOR EXAMPLE, that the number of customers paying their telephone bills and “quality” of service would DECREASE, if upon entering FLOW’s office they don’t see the usual “recognized cashier faces.”

How do you know employers will force employees into taking vaccinations?

    Let’s ASSUME it happens………….

How do you know the “best or long term employees” would be among those that will REFUSE to be vaccinated and their services subsequently terminated as a result of their decision?

Wouldn’t management have “an idea of the connection between the employee and customer service,” because, from time to time during business operations, they have to deal with the fact that people behind the “recognized faces customers become attached to” either resign, retire or die?

Are you aware “long term employees” are usually among the majority of employees who choose to accept retirement packages when they’re given the choice to do so?

It’s clear last Saturday’s protest has swollen your head with so much excitement, that you’re posting more irrational shiite than usual.

  15. Cops probing protest march
POLICE are conducting a probe into Saturday’s protest march against mandatory or coerced COVID-19 vaccination where lawmen had to order almost 2 000 people to disperse.
After the walkers had gathered in Independence Square to climax the walk from Pelican Village in Bridgetown, police intervened and told organisers that due to the large numbers, they had breached COVID-19 health protocols.
Yesterday, Deputy Commissioner of Police Oral Williams told the DAILY NATION that while more information on the matter should come from his boss Commissioner of Police Tyrone Griffith, “what I will say is that we are doing an internal investigation to see what went wrong”.
Williams said Griffith should reveal the findings of the investigation when it was concluded.
Calls to the Commissioner went unanswered.
The walk began around 9 a.m., but at minutes to 10 o’clock, police instructed organisers, one of whom was social activist Winston Clarke, to tell the gathering to disperse.
    An agreement
“It was only to be a walk from Pelican Village to Independence Square. When they got here, they were supposed to disperse and there were not to be any speeches. That was the agreement with the Commissioner of Police,” Inspector Elliot Bovell said at the time.
“With the COVID-19 pandemic, you are not allowed to have an assembly of more than 100 people, so they have breached everything here today,” he said after the streets had been cleared.
While many then left Independence Square, scores headed down Broad Street and to Jubilee Gardens before going back up and turning onto Tudor Street to continue their protest, with police closely following.
The protesters travelled through Baxters Road, Kensington New Road and on to Fontabelle, but after police blocked off a section of the road, the marchers turned right toward Holborn Circle, onto Harbour Road and finished back at Pelican Village, where they then dispersed.
When contacted yesterday, Clarke said he and fellow organisers were deliberating on the matter.
    Took note
“I took note of everything how the police operated that day, everything relative to exactly what transpired – what I was advised to do and what I was deterred from doing. They were in contravention to the Public Order Act, Section 21 of Section B under the First Schedule. To be quite frank, I want to take this matter to a different forum so I will have to do some consultation with my cohorts . . .
as we are all in this together,” he said.
The march was organised by the Barbados Concerned Citizens Against Mandated and Coerced Vaccination, which comprises religious and spiritual organisations, grass-roots community groups, activists, business people and private individuals.
On Saturday, Clarke had claimed that under the Public Order Act, Section 21, any religious organisation had the right to organise a walk and he did not have to apply for permission to do so.
However, he added: “The Commissioner of Police, through a superintendent, told me that I could have a three-day moratorium, in which I can write a letter to them asking for permission. So I am going to do that.” (CA)

that is the Public Order Act..under the Slave Codes still on statute books…..using Covid-19 as a cover.

the government got bigger problems coming their way, if they want to implement slave code laws when they DON’T IMPLEMENT ANYTHING POSITIVE FOR THE BLACK AFRICAN POPULATION and never have, that’s on them…..

yall will NOT GET AWAY WITH ANY OF IT..

  17. As usual what we have are some in the forum squeezing all the problems we have to manage into their narrow agendas.

    @ David

Do you know if the “Barbados Concerned Citizens Against Mandated and Coerced Vaccination” is a registered ‘religious organisation’ ………………

……………….. or does Winston Clarke believe being a member of a church gives him the right to organise a group of people to protest/march/demonstrate under any name of his choosing and declare it to be a ‘religious organisation?’

  19. @Artax You know the answer to your question. These people are taking advantage of the prevailing fear of citiens fueled by Covid 19, struggling economy etc.

  20. They could say whatever, backing down was not something they thought they would ever be made to do….i advise this government to suck it up AND MOVE ON…ya got bigger problems….the fraudulent fintech licenses aint worth SHIT IN NIGERIA..and noone wants to see minority criminals from the Caribbean…yall got a 6 billion or more DEFICIT from robbing the treasury and pension fund…and ya black asses belong to IMF from loans…because yall are the ones, NOT THE BLACK/AFRICAN POPULATION…who know where all that money disappeared to….and HAVE TO ANSWER FOR IT..

ya can’t want more problems than that…unless ya too stupid to know the difference..

  21. @ David August 10, 2021 10:00 AM

So the police assess the situation as just as dangerous as Tron did a few days ago. Very nice.

What is clear is that the demonstrators may have deliberately wanted to spread the virus, or at least condoned it. The police should IMMEDIATELY take the leaders of the demonstration into protective custody.

Please remember: our opposition (Muslim Brotherhood, Rastafarians, DLP, ISO Taliban, WARU & al.) are not actually fighting compulsory vaccination. They are simply against ALL Corona vaccinations, thus against all righteous citizens who are already vaccinated or want to be vaccinated.

p.s. Has Donville already been vaccinated in Texas? I suspect so, because otherwise he couldn’t pick cotton 70 hours a week.

  22. Pacha…they are advertising a space for a new corrupt caricom misleader…

  23. And as for those fraudulent, racist criminals from Germany, UK etc who own businesses on the island and BULLYING Black workers to verbally agree to vaccines when it’s unnecessary….yall want putting in the news across the world WITH YA PHOTOS….ya wicked cave beasts…just because parliament nigas told ya that ya can act like slave masters as long as ya pay them bribes…don’t mean YA OWN BLACK SLAVES…..the wicked vote begging negros will say anything for bribes and to socially reduce the people who vote for them..

  24. RE: As usual what we have are some in the forum squeezing all the problems we have to manage into their narrow agendas.

ALTHOUGH I OFTEN DO NOT SHARE OR APPRECIATE THE VIEWS OF SOME ON BU, SHOULD I NOT ASSUME THAT THEY ARE ONLY SEEKING TO JOIN IN THE DISCUSSION, SINCE YOU NEVER KNOW HOW EXPRESSING YOUR VIEW MAY MAKE A DIFFERENCE?

These people are taking advantage of the prevailing fear of citiens fueled by Covid 19, struggling economy etc.

IS IT NOT SO THAT MANY ARE FEARFULL OF THE VIRUS ITSELF, AND THAT SOME ARE FEARFUL OF THE SIDE EFFECTS OF TAKING A VACCINE THAT HAS BEEN DEVELOPED MORE RAPIDLY THAN IS THE NORM, AND QUITE CONTRARY TO THE ESTABLISHED PROTOCOLS OF DEVELOPING A PHARMACEUTICAL, AS IS VERY WELL DESCRIBED IN ALL TEXTBOOKS OF PHARMACOLOGY, SUCH AS KATZUNG ET AL?

IS IT POSSIBLE THAT THESE FEARS THAT ARE BEING, BILATERALLY AND UNIVERSALLY EXPRESSED, IS A PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE PROPHESY THAT IN THE ESCHATON, MENS HEARTS WILL BE FAILING THEM FOR FEAR?

HOW GOOD IT IS TO HAVE EXPERIENCED PEACE WITH GOD (ROMANS 5:1&2) AND TO KNOW THE PEACE THAT PASSETH UNDERSTANDING (PHILIPPIANS 4:6-7).
6 Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.
7 And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.

  25. Here is where appropriate vaccines have to be made available for pregnant women.

Port Of Spain – Trinidad and Tobago registered its first mother-to-child transmission of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic as health authorities also confirmed that a woman had died soon after giving birth from the virus.

Director of Women’s Health at the Ministry of Health here, Dr Adesh Sirjusingh, told a news conference here Monday that nearly 300 pregnant women have contracted the virus so far with some of them becoming critically ill.

“As of today, we have 285 pregnant women who have contracted COVID-19. They are in various stages of pregnancy . . . some have not yet delivered, some have become critically ill, going to our High Dependency Unit and Intensive Care Unit, and unfortunately I have the sad news to report, we actually lost our first mother after she delivered to COVID-19 . . . as a result of the complications of COVID-19.

“We have reached that place which is being seen worldwide where maternal deaths are being reported,” the medical practitioner said.

Sirjusingh also told reporters that an unborn baby had contracted the virus after it had been transmitted to the foetus from the mother.

“On another sad note, we have had a case where a mother transmitted COVID. She is COVID positive and because of our meticulous screening procedures at the hospitals where we do screen our pregnant patients when they come in . . . we picked up that she was COVID positive.

  26. @angela cox August 10, 2021 5:41 AM “The masses are fed up with this govt.”

    This is a LIE.

100,512 people have marched to the vaccine clinics. Those are the masses.

3750 anti-vaxxers marched on Saturday. Those are the tiny, less than 3.8% minority.

Can you explain the math to me.

Keep it simply, becausin’ I int too bright.

  27. There are people out there who the most dangerous/most courageous thing they have ever done is to cross the road in front of their city apartment or suburban house, and yet those people are happy to push others, others, not themselves, into danger.

  28. My fear is that government may overreact if protestors try to march again. From what I read, it would appear that the GoB is considering crossing t’s and dotting i’s of the covid protocol.

The crowd size restriction will not be helpful. A softer and more sensible approach would be encourage social distancing and wearing masks when protesting. In a way, this is supporting the argument for increased vaccinations.

  30. The wicked, deceitful, treacherous corrupt caricom governments will try EVERYTHING to SET UP Black/African people AGAIN…to keep slave societies intact…stay alert..

  31. The vaccine issue is not an easy rock for govt to crawl from under
Govt was given a 30-0 mandate by the people
A mandate which came with many measures and one which include the people’s best interest as directed by the Constitution
Now govt is caught up into a whirlwind of directives by International lending agencies and WHO along With CDC all which are keeping an eager eye over govt shoulders mandated where the t’s and I’s are carefully crossed and dotted with a stamped and deliberate directive to make sure all it’s citizens are vaccinated
Going back to the gallery waiting and watching earnestly to see how and when govt crawls from underated the Vaccine rock

  32. @TheOGazerts August 10, 2021 12:20 PM “…encourage social distancing and wearing masks…”

    @ Cuhdear Bajan

    I agree with you wholeheartedly.

How could anyone of reasonable, rational thought conclude the over 2,000 people or, as you indicated, “less than 3.8% minority,” that protested against compulsory vaccination, can be used as an accurate representation that “the masses are fed up with this govt?”

Wouldn’t someone who is purposely misrepresenting the facts, be considered as ‘pushing’ a similar particular political agenda they often accuse other people of?’

  34. From keen observation of the local landscape it appears the couple thousands who marched were motivated to do for different reasons. We should not label the group antivaxxers. Some were bandwagonists, some were DLP supporters, some were independent minded people who sincerely SID CIBC to a view vaccination should be voluntary etc.

  35. @angela cox August 10, 2021 1:03 PM “Now govt is caught up into a whirlwind of directives by International lending agencies and WHO along With CDC…”

Barbados is a MEMBER of the World health Organization (WHO) and has been a member since October 2, 1967 through both DLP and BLP administrations. Neither the BLP nor the DLP nor any third party has ever suggested that Barbados resigns from the WHO. So the WHO cannot/does not give Barbados directives, but only offers advice.

The CDC has no legal authority to give the Barbados government directives. The CDC is a US government organization and as such can only give directives to American organizations. The CDC can share its research findings with the whole world and any individual or country can take or reject the advice.

You really need to stop lying. You are making your beloved DLP look bad.

You will very likely go to hell too when you die as a consequence of the many lies which you tell.

  36. @angela cox August 10, 2021 12:52 PM “have forgotten the thousands world wide u have protested.”

    Nope.

But I am wondering if you have forgotten the more than 4.48 BILLION people who who have been vaccinated.

  37. That thing in St. Vincent should grow a pair and do the same.

“ALBANY — Gov. Cuomo announced Tuesday that he will resign from office in the face of escalating political pressure over allegations that he sexually harassed nearly a dozen women, marking a stunning downfall for one of the most prominent Democrats in the country.

In a live-streamed speech from his Manhattan office, the 63-year-old governor acknowledged for the first time that he “deeply offended” all of his 11 accusers. He said the only politically salient move for him is to step aside and let New York regain its focus on pandemic recovery and other pressing matters.”

  38. Good riddance.

Would someone please tell the fellas, starting just before puberty that they will never be able to perform all of the sex that their over-wrought imaginations have led them to believe they can.

There is nothing in this world more pitiful than old men asking young women for sex.

If only they understood how they are laughed at.

  42. Indeed! They are ridiculed far and wide. These old farts need to take their place. It is futile to attempt to recapture one’s youth. One should look old age in the eye and laugh.

I am not what I used to be and I laugh at that daily. Yesterday my son was laughing at a fight scene and wondering why people make those strange noises.

I reminded him that I make those noises every time I fight to get up out of a low chair.

    We laughed hard.

I could get up without them but somehow they make it easier. I did not even realise I was making them until he pointed it out a couple of years ago.

Just let the delusions go and life can still be enjoyable!

  43. They should have had a relay march and made a spectacle of it.

Lacking in imagination. No flair for the dramatic.

There is a way to get around the 100 person limit. It would have taken a wee bit of organizing, that’s all.

The new Saint Lucia Labour Party (SLP) administration has indicated that it will not implement mandatory COVID-19 vaccination.

“There will be no mandatory vaccinations or, the Prime Minister has indicated that our government will not , I repeat, our government will not propose mandatory vaccination,” the Minister for Health, Wellness and Elderly Affairs, Moses Jn Baptiste, told a press briefing on Tuesday.

He disclosed that it was one of the decisions coming out of Monday’s inaugural meeting of the country’s new cabinet of ministers at which the COVID-19 pandemic and health care in general featured prominently.

“Addressing the current health care crisis is the number one priority of this government,” Jn Baptiste explained.
