“You May Choose To Look The Other Way But You Can Never Say Again That You Did Not Know.”
    ― William Wilberforce

BRITAIN WAS THE FIRST MAJOR POWER TO ABOLISH SLAVERY IN ALL OF ITS COLONIES BECAUSE OF THE TIRELESS PERSISTENCE’S WILLIAM WILBERFORCE!

    https://www.facebook.com/164391610288681/photos/a.165236216870887.40750.164391610288681/165236340204208/?type=3

Many ‘West Indians’ have Irish surnames. Many of their surnames that are doubtless as a result of their ‘owners’. What a sad and despicable way humans treat one another and still it continues here and anywhere else in the world; just slightly more covertly.

The Irish slave trade began when 30,000 Irish prisoners were sold as slaves to the New World. The King James I Proclamation of 1625 required Irish political prisoners be sent overseas and sold to English settlers in the West Indies. By the mid 1600s, the Irish were the main slaves sold to Antigua and Montserrat. At that time, 70% of the total population of Montserrat were Irish slaves.

Ireland quickly became the biggest source of human livestock for English merchants. The majority of the early slaves to the New World were actually white.

From 1641 to 1652, over 500,000 Irish were killed by the English and another 300,000 were sold as slaves. Ireland’s population fell from about 1,500,000 to 600,000 in one single decade. Families were ripped apart as the British did not allow Irish dads to take their wives and children with them across the Atlantic. This led to a helpless population of homeless women and children. Britain’s solution was to auction them off as well.

During the 1650s, over 100,000 Irish children between the ages of 10 and 14 were taken from their parents and sold as slaves in the West Indies, Virginia and New England. In this decade, 52,000 Irish (mostly women and children) were sold to Barbados and Virginia. Another 30,000 Irish men and women were also transported and sold to the highest bidder. In 1656, Cromwell ordered that 2000 Irish children be taken to Jamaica and sold as slaves to English settlers.

Many people today will avoid calling the Irish slaves what they truly were: Slaves. They’ll come up with terms like “Indentured Servants” to describe what occurred to the Irish. However, in most cases from the 17th and 18th centuries, Irish slaves were nothing more than human cattle.

As an example, the African slave trade was just beginning during this same period. It is well recorded that African slaves, not tainted with the stain of the hated Catholic theology and more expensive to purchase, were often treated far better than their Irish counterparts.

African slaves were very expensive during the late 1600s (50 Sterling). Irish slaves came cheap (no more than 5 Sterling). If a planter whipped or branded or beat an Irish slave to death, it was never a crime. A death was a monetary setback, but far cheaper than killing a more expensive African. The English masters quickly began breeding the Irish women for both their own personal pleasure and for greater profit. Children of slaves were themselves slaves, which increased the size of the master’s free workforce. Even if an Irish woman somehow obtained her freedom, her kids would remain slaves of her master. Thus, Irish moms, even with this new found emancipation, would seldom abandon their kids and would remain in servitude.

In time, the English thought of a better way to use these women (in many cases, girls as young as 12) to increase their market share: The settlers began to breed Irish women and girls with African men to produce slaves with a distinct complexion. These new “mulatto” slaves brought a higher price than Irish livestock and, likewise, enabled the settlers to save money rather than purchase new African slaves. This practice of interbreeding Irish females with African men went on for several decades and was so widespread that, in 1681, legislation was passed “forbidding the practice of mating Irish slave women to African slave men for the purpose of producing slaves for sale.” In short, it was stopped only because it interfered with the profits of a large slave transport company.

England continued to ship tens of thousands of Irish slaves for more than a century. Records state that, after the 1798 Irish Rebellion, thousands of Irish slaves were sold to both America and Australia. There were horrible abuses of both African and Irish captives. One British ship even dumped 1,302 slaves into the Atlantic Ocean so that the crew would have plenty of food to eat.

There is little question that the Irish experienced the horrors of slavery as much (if not more in the 17th Century) as the Africans did. There is, also, very little question that those brown, tanned faces you witness in your travels to the West Indies are very likely a combination of African and Irish ancestry. In 1839, Britain finally decided on its own to end its participation in Satan’s highway to hell and stopped transporting slaves. While their decision did not stop pirates from doing what they desired, the new law slowly concluded THIS chapter of nightmarish Irish misery.

But, if anyone, black or white, believes that slavery was only an African experience, then they’ve got it completely wrong.

Irish slavery is a subject worth remembering, not erasing from our memories.

This is not the first time that Sir Hilary has put his stamp of approval on an election. He once said that the .NDP
will only disrupt the great progress made by the DLP and BLP. He returned to Barbados and was quickly endorsed and worshipped by many as a superior historian and he had the charisma and eloquence to confuse the entire country. I know he is a “ productive” academic but Sir Hilary was always going to be another Sir Keith Hunte.
Like the ladies say : Hilary looks good in jeans. Call the man Sir! Well respected by his “peers”. I seriously believe he has a good chance of ending up in Illaro Court or Government House.

  3. Sir William
You could call him that but we will never recognize such trinkets of empire except in jest.

We could never agree that such a man who disavows large tracks of him own work should have pride of place in any society. As ourself devout anarchists we support the reverse of what Beckles espouses and has always represented while pretending the opposite.

This is a man who disavowed the movement in Barbados for economic justice. This meally mouthed fucker even recoiled from mentioning the Mutual book in his resume …… And announced that to the world. Now only cunts could believe that Beckles has any interests other than commercial exploitation in African peoples. This raasoul man is worthy of death for selling out our ancestors. And we pronounce such a sentence herewith. The Damocles sword to the neck not that of the woman in Buckingham Palace.

And Sir William you are wrong. Beckles is by far the most reactionary son of a bitch known to man.

Even Farrakhan in the US spotted Beckles as a neoliberal seeking to use Black people for personal gain and he called him out as a man not willing to suffer for Black liberation. Now this son of a bitch sees another opportunity in the BLM movement to be exploitative of Black historical struggle.

May Hilary Beckles burn in the hottest fires of hell.

Sir William, Beckles is far more a conservator of the establishment than all the rest of traitors combined.

  4. Sir William

That Beckles could force you to bend the knee not only talks about him but you Sir William as well.

There was NEVER any irish slave trade, maybe except for the irish who sold each other into slavery and even that was exposed on FB yesterday as being a TOTAL LIE… because no one can find the evidence, but this drug trafficking, gun running, money laundering liar continues to spread that misinformation incessantly although it has always been fact checked as a complete lie..

  11. @Waru,
I hope that they will work out a formulae for reparations. We all know that slaves who shared their master’s blood received a direct inheritance from his estate. And have directly benefitted from this advantage throughout the ages.
Reparations should be weighted to benefit those of a darker hue.

The Mahogany Coconut blog does not go about looking for petty fights to prove a point. If Mr. Hillary Beckles’ office instructed/ requested that he prefers to be addressed as Sir Hillary, it is not a problem for the Editorial Committee. It’s called respect . You prefer to be addressed as Pachamama and you are given that. Bending and breaking are two different things. Why don’t you call up “ Hillary” and cuss him.

Call him up! There is no need for that. What is necessary is the launching of a class action law suite against beckles pesonally, the institution suborning his illegal activities, caribbean goverments, etc in a non regional court. That is a more appropriate strategic response.

Sir William you, like the quintessential bajan are crimpled by small mindedness. Be jesus christ man, the man is stealing from the ancestors to crimple the region with a junk miseducation.

What about you? Do you like to be addressed as sir too? Do you really think that that is the real issue at stake? True to form Sir William goes for the small beer, the mundane.

I don’t give two hoots about Beckles. I have never jumped in his band. I publicly via the Advocate News defended Beckles many moons ago when Bizzy Williams and white Bajans were slaughtering him and calling him a racist. I was threatened by those who used to meet at the Boatyard. I have never met the man.
As for MCG Blog , it has been out there in the public for several years; people can form their opinions. You can answer yourself about whether it’s black or white. You can appoint yourself as : judge , jury and executioner.

  18. I am sure that @Mariposa would be good company. We as a nation are paying a high price to defend free speech, a principle much talked about on BU, but little understood.
@Mariposa is not only needed for ‘balance’, but because we need to hear a wide discussion in order to progress knowing we have explored every angle of an argument.
But, like most things, people say more about themselves when they try to cover their tracks through deceit and cunning, than they realise. That is why the security agencies keep people to decipher conversations and letters.
Bring back @Mariposa should be a campaign slogan. While we are at it, we should also campaign to free people from prison immediately who have been on remand for ten years or more. Get the president to make a speech about that.
Little Barbados must join the civilised world, and 2020 is not too late.

  19. How do people who are blinded by a political affiliation bring balance? Independent minded people bring balance.

One does not have to be an Einstein to decipher F. C. @ 6.38. She just can’t help herself.

As a minority figure she would do best to ingratiate herself with the majority population and to be humble.

She of all people and all the other minority groups should understand that Barbados remains an island with an enormous and an increasingly restless black majority population.

Events can change rapidly on the ground. Zanzibar, Kenya and Uganda are three black majority countries which ended badly for minority populations.

“Minister of Labour Colin Jordan has called on Barbadians to confront “pervasive and systemic” racism, which he said still exists in Barbados.

During debate on a Private Members’ resolution on Black Lives Matter in the House of Assembly yesterday, Jordan said he would not be silent on the issue.

“Today at this time I believe that we have come to a pivotal place in our history where we have to say we are duty-bound; we are bound by our own morality and ethics to say that enough is enough. Racism must be debunked as a theory and it must be dismantled,” the St Peter MP said.

In a debate in which much attention was directed at the call for the removal of Lord Nelson’s statue from National Heroes Square, Jordan also called for the erection of a Speightstown monument in honour of Cuffy, a slave rebellion leader from St Peter, “to represent the struggle of black people in this country against racism in all its forms and against slavery in all its forms”

  31. The development of a plantation economy and African slavery in Carolina began before English colonists even settled Charles Town in 1670. In 1663, eight Lords Proprietors in England received land grants in North America from King Charles II for their loyalty to the monarchy during the English Civil War. The Lords decided to combine their shares to establish a profit-seeking proprietary settlement, Carolina, between the English colony of Virginia and Spanish Florida. To ensure financial success, they sent representatives to study the lucrative sugar plantation system on the Caribbean island of Barbados. They also recruited white settlers from this English West Indian colony to help launch their new North American settlement. These white Barbadians often brought enslaved Africans and African Barbadians with them.

Sugarcane never became a major cash crop in Carolina, but these Barbadians eventually transplanted their West Indian model of plantations and slavery to the new colony. Initially, Lowcountry planters attempted and failed to develop a cash crop from olives, grapes, mulberry trees, and different English-based grains. Carolina settlers also engaged in the fur trade with American Indians, extracted tar and pitch for naval stores, and raised livestock for exporting packed beef to the English West Indies. By 1690, however, Lowcountry planters had successfully applied the West Indian plantation model to rice, and Carolina rapidly developed into a lucrative plantation economy and slave society.

  32. An overview of the early colonial history of Barbados provides context for why this English West Indian colony was so influential in the development of plantation economies in the Lowcountry and throughout the English North America. In the late seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, Barbados was an ideal place to recruit settlers who could promote the Lords Proprietors commercial interests in Carolina. By the 1660s and 70s, this relatively small Caribbean island featured the most lucrative trading system in the English colonies, and the most profitable sugar plantation system in the world. Barbados’ booming plantation economy had developed in just a few short decades, due to a series of geographic and historic advantages.

After the English settled Barbados in 1627, they quickly began cultivating different crops to find a lucrative export. As a coral island, much of the land in Barbados is flat or sloped and arable, in contrast to more mountainous volcanic islands elsewhere in the Caribbean. In addition, in the early seventeenth century, the island was reportedly uninhabited. Though Amerindian groups had a long history of occupying Barbados, conflicts between these groups and prior encounters with Spanish explorers (and European diseases) had nearly wiped out their numbers before the English arrived. In contrast, other English colonies in the Caribbean, such as Antigua and St. Kitts, continually struggled with attacks from Amerindian inhabitants, which delayed settler attempts to develop plantation economies. Geographically set apart at the eastern extremity of the Caribbean island chain, English settlers in Barbados could avoid conflicts with both European rivals and Amerindians and quickly develop cultivation and trade systems.

  33. When English settlers arrived in Barbados they brought enslaved Africans captured from European rivals in privateering skirmishes. Dutch traders also brought enslaved Amerindians from British Guiana in South America. In the first few decades of settlement, however, the Barbadian labor force primarily consisted of white indentured servants, convicts, and “barbadosed” or kidnapped workers from Scotland, Ireland, and England. Barbadian settlers used this mixed labor force to cultivate cash crops such as tobacco, cotton, and indigo on small to medium-sized landholdings, but they struggled to find a successful export. In addition, labor conditions were extreme and oppressive, and indentured servants protested their treatment on the island through riots in 1634 and 1649.

The colony of Barbados continued to struggle financially until the 1640s, when the Portuguese expelled Dutch traders and Sephardic Jews from northern Brazil during a civil war. These settlers turned to English West Indian colonies for new trade markets. They particularly looked to Barbados to cultivate sugar for the booming European market, and to encourage a consumer base for their connections to the trans-Atlantic slave trade in West and Central Africa. As the easternmost Caribbean island in the Lesser Antilles, Barbados was ideally situated to become a port for European trade, and an entryway into American trade systems. European sugar consumption also grew tremendously in the eighteenth century. New Barbadian sugar planters as well as traders became immensely wealthy. The Sugar Revolution transformed Barbados from a colony of small landholdings to an entirely deforested island, covered in plantations worked by enslaved Africans and owned by a handful of elites.

  34. Minister of Labour Colin Jordan has called on Barbadians to confront “pervasive and systemic” racism, which he said still exists in Barbados.

During debate on a Private Members’ resolution on Black Lives Matter in the House of Assembly yesterday, Jordan said he would not be silent on the issue.

It will take a long time to eliminate if not reduce the scourge of racism and bigotry so long as humankind exists. The best approach it to allow it to be exposed so that the excoriation can be applied with precision. It is a process of recalibrating the establishment through education. “A Wise Man Never Knows All, Only Fools Know Everything! African Proverb!”
    ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Is that how you are trying to get back at the miller for exposing you to be a liar and a fraud?

As a “confessed” Christian shouldn’t you be sticking to your only book of Truth and moral direction?

Why this constant reference to ‘African culture’ which you deem as inferior to the ways of your whitewashed Christianity?

    So which comes first?
The African proverb or your biblical equivalent in the following passage:

“The way of a fool is right in his own eyes: but he that hearkens unto counsel is wise.” ~ Proverbs 12:15,

    Who copied what from whom?

What next are you going to plagiarize? The spells of West African Obeah practices and call them blessings of New Age witchcraft from the Vatican?

For you to claim that ‘white’ Irish and Scottish poor women were used as breeding machines to produce mulatto babies through the black male slaves is a clear example of your unashamedly despicable attempts to distort history.

Is this the reason you proffer for having so many Irish and Scottish names in the Bajan telephone directory?

Which white slave owner would have allowed his white women of any social class or religious persuasion to be deflowered and despoiled by African male slaves to produce malleable brown-skin slaves when he and his heirs and white male servants could have done a similar job by raping the young black slave women and keeping the ‘sweet juicy’ fruits as bed wenches?

Those rapaciously randy white blokes could have always claimed (and seek forgiveness from the Church) that they were just following your Yahweh’s orders as instructed in your good book on moral guidance.

“They fought against Midian, as the LORD commanded Moses, and killed every man……..Now kill all the boys [innocent kids]. And kill every woman who has slept with a man, but save for yourselves every girl who has never slept with a man. (Numbers 31:7,17-18)”

  40. @FC and company
The one thing that amazes me is how an individual can come before a a large group of people and say
“You all don’t know what is going on; you all don’t know who to vote for; you all don’t know who is your ‘enemy’; you all don’t understand what you read; but you all are lucky; I am here to tell you how you are murdering each other, about abortions, imprisonment; who to vote for and explain some of what you read. You all don’t have to think. I will do the thinking for you.”

These self appointed leaders or messengers don’t recognize their own ignorance and insolence; don’t realized that they they are acting as new racist plantation owner with all of the answers the darkies need. If they were not so ignorant and arrogant, they would realize how odious and racist their own behavior is.

When it was biblical stuff, it was way over my head and I was not interested. I was content to let that pass as well
    ,
But now he has gone down and avenue where I have an opinion which is different from his. I had to speak up.

Here are some quotes for him and that I should also try to remember
Jack of all trades and master of none
A little knowledge is a dangerous thing’
Beware of false knowledge; it is more dangerous than ignorance.
Real knowledge is to know the extent of one’s ignorance.

Saw this as I was scrolling:
It is better to have but little knowledge with humility and understanding, than great learning which might make you proud. For a person’s merits are not to be estimated by having many visions, or by knowledge of the bible, or by being placed in a higher position; but by being grounded in true humility, and by seeking always, purely, and entirely, the honor of God.
    Thomas a Kempis

Better start seriously preparing to get rid of all those stinking racists/minorities out of your parliament/legislature in Barbados, out of your treasury and pension fund to effect the necessary changes and if they do not comply, chase them all off the island and that includes the toxic and evil Syrian Cartel, the majority population have the numbers to do this and they cannot fight back, there is not enuff of them..nor enuff sell out leaders to stop you…

“(WINSTON-SALEM, N.C.) — Three members of a North Carolina police department have been fired after a department audit of a video recording captured one of the officers saying a civil war was necessary to wipe Black people off the map and that he was ready.”

Re …Miller June 24, 2020 8:29 AM “Why this constant reference to ‘African culture’… So which comes first? The African proverb or your biblical …?”

People who read do not always understand what they read it happens to me all the time I have to read it many times to get the meaning, language is imperfect and to convey meaning through words does not do the job adequately. GOD SPEAKS TO ALL MEN AND AS THEY LEARN PEOPLE OF ALL RACES AND CULTURES CREATE SIMPLE SAYINGS TO EXPLAIN THEIR WISDOM. So the African sayings can have merit and whatever is good or virtuous can be for the befit of all mankind. Not all saying however in the same culture have equal weight as not so good people try to sow discord. Therefore, I will use wisdom wherever I find it whither in the bible in proverbs or African proverbs.

Re “What next are you going to plagiarize? The spells of West African Obeah practices and call them blessings of New Age witchcraft from the Vatican?”

QUOTING SOMEONE IS NOT PLAGIARISMS IT IS ONLY IF YOU CLAIM THAT YOU SAID IT. I did not write history, it is history. I did not Distort History; Freedom offered videos to show by Historian and Excerpts from historian as to what occurred. IT IS YOU, WHO DOES NOT LIKE WHAT WAS SAID, SO YOU ACCUSE OTHERS OF SOMETHING OR ANYTHING TO FIT YOUR NARRATIVE.

Freedom does not preach race, I do not advocate race why would I advocate any race supremacy when I pray the Lord ’s Prayer which starts with OUR father. FREEDOM TRIES TO SHOW PEOPLE THAT RACE DO NOT MATTER. I did not make my skin colour neither did you make yours. All the IQ tests in the world do not show any real differences on IQ scores so who is preaching supremac?

Freedom have met Black people brighter than me, more intelligent than me and the same for Indians, Whites and I will presume other people. Please read what I say and not what others say about me as I have been called Drug Runner, Arms Runner, Racist, Hater, Blob, Anti-Black, threatened with a mob of Bajans coming for me ETC. I seek to inform the BU readers not how to vote but how to think for yourself and then vote or choose where the choice is yours not what others tell you to say or do. “Seek and you will find, Knock and the door will be open to you” But you have to seek!

I DO NOT WORRY WHAT THEY CALL ME I WORRY ABOUT THE DECEPTION THAT ABOUNDS. The people killed Jesus, who am I? What do you think they will do to me? Do you think they will erect a stute in my honour? IF YOU KNOW THE ANSWER WHY DO YOU THINK, I WOULD PUT MYSELF IN DANGER FROM THE BU MOB IF NOT TO SHOW PEOPLE HOW TO ENLIGHTEN THEMSELVES BY QUESTIONING AND SEEKING AND NOT BELIEVING THE DECEPTION THAT ABOUNDS.

When Freedom comes on BU, it is for the readers as I try to explain for each man to learn how to think for themselves, to open their eyes and not to be woke but to be awake. The woke crowd wants you to follow what they say, the awake crowd want you to think for yourself and come to your own conclusion without the propaganda clouding your thoughts, whatever that conclusion is.

As for the colour of God I do not know what colour he was or is now but even God does not want that to be an issue. God has the commandments and in them He said Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth. Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: Some people make what they think is a likeness of Jesus, I have seen images of a Black Jesus a White Jesus a Mix race Jesus. A ROSE BY ANY OTHER NAME WILL STILL BE A ROSE, WE HAPPEN TO CALL IT A ROSE SO THAT WE ALL MIGHT KNOW WHAT WE ARE TALKING ABOUT.
