Submitted by Grenville Phillips II,

There seems to be some confusion within the Royal family.  Such confusion may be used as supporting evidence by those who wish to remove the Queen as our Head of State.  Since there seems to be one-way traffic on this issue in the media, some balance is required.

The Queen provides us with valuable insurance.  We should not cancel our insurance policy unless we can obtain an equal of better one.

We should insure against unaffordable foreseen events.  Many of us have car, home, and health insurance.  We have it to protect us in the event that: our home sustains major damage, our car is involved in a major collision, and we suffer a major medical emergency.

Like any insurance policy, we hope that we will never have to use it.  No one wants to suffer major damage.  However, if we do, it is comforting to know that the event was insured.

We are not insured against the mismanagement of our economy.  We elect politicians who: pass laws to increase our burden of taxes, restrict our opportunities to earn, and confiscate our property without compensation.

If we do not like their management methods, then our options are to either: like it, lump it, or hope that more responsible persons will offer to manage our economy.    A more responsible government will: reduce the tax burden, allow all Barbadians to participate in Barbados’ economy, and behave fairly.

If our constitution allows us to remove an inept and corrupt government administration every five years, then what additional insurance can the Queen provide Barbadians?  We have Royal insurance for two foreseen events.

After World War 2, many African colonies obtained their independence.  Many hastened their economic and social decline when they politicised their countries’ public services.

To protect Barbadians from a similar fate, the DLP and BLP representatives agreed to a constitution where the Queen’s representative would be responsible for hiring, disciplining and firing public workers.

After we were granted our independence, our politicians pursued a path that could only ruin our economy.  First, they recommended aged persons to be appointed as Governor Generals.  Then they placed political agencies between the Governor Generals and our public workers.

Finally, they gave our Governor Generals tiresome ceremonial duties, that distracted them from the gradual politicisation of our public service.

Our Governor Generals no longer protect us, by defending our public service from politicians who want to politicise it.  Although we are insured against this foreseen disaster, we are left exposed as if we were not insured.  Therefore, that Royal insurance is currently useless.

The second insured event is exemplified by Grenada.  In 1983, the Grenadian military lined up the Cabinet of Grenada against a wall and murdered them.  They then turned their guns on the people and killed at least 19.

Fortunately for the Grenadians, their Governor General accepted his responsibility to protect Grenadian citizens, and activated the Royal insurance policy.  Thus, the Grenadian people were liberated from tyranny.

Contrast that relief with the situation in Rwanda a few years later.  The United Nations had military units in Rwanda, who confirmed the massacres of one ethnic group.  Every week, we would learn of an additional 50,000 persons that were massacred.

The UN’s only response was to issue useless resolutions, telling the murderers to behave themselves.  The murderers ignored the resolutions and slaughtered 300,000 people.  The UN responded with more useless resolutions.  So, they slaughtered 500,000 more.

What did the US do during the slaughter of about 800,000 persons.  They were trying to find a way not to call the mass slaughter of one group of people genocide.  By doing so, they convinced themselves that they did not need to stop the killings.

It is foreseen that we will be deceived into electing a tyrannical administration one day.  When we are being mercilessly oppressed, on whom can we call on for relief.  We will likely die waiting on the UN, US, EU, or CARICOM, because we have no insurance policies with them.

They may or may not stop our political oppressors, depending on if it is in their self-interests.  With an active insurance policy, the only reason why our suffering will likely be prolonged, is if our Governor General sides with our oppressors, and does not activate our Royal policy.

If our Governor Generals act only in the best interests of those who recommended their appointments, then our Royal insurance is illusory.  Before we wake up one day to find ourselves uninsured, perhaps the time has come to ask our Governor General for the circumstances under which our Royal insurance will be activated.

Ugandans used to have Royal insurance, but their politicians cancelled their protection.  Without this restraint, approximately 500,000 Ugandan citizens were murdered, for political reasons, during Uganda’s first 15 years as a republic.  When a nation becomes uninsured, the only losers are its citizens, unless every person is allowed to self-insure, like in the US.

  2. Interesting submission as it relates to the diminished role of the Governor General in our form of government. A read of Senator Caswell through the years would toss up instances where the GG could have been proactive with interventions. There is a letter the Senator sent to the former GG that was never responded to.

  3. @Grenville Phillips “Finally, they gave our Governor Generals tiresome ceremonial duties, that distracted them from the gradual politicisation of our public service.”

All I can say is that if our Governors General are so easily distracted by their minor ceremonial duties, that theydon’t deserve to be Governor General.

And the correct term is: Governors General NOT Governor Generals.

  4. And my recollection is that it was Caricom and the Americans; or the Americans and Caricom who intervened in Grenada NOT the British.

  5. @Grenville Phillips “What did the US do during the slaughter of about 800,000 persons.”

So what die the British do?

What did the French who formerly exercised colonial rule over Rwanda do?

But perhaps it was the French who practiced divide and rule in Rwanda for many years, and so set up the Rwandans to slaughter each other.

Mr Blogmaster, it’s tough writing weekly columns where the suthor can maintain a high level of interest or finding differing topics into which the author can sink his/her teeth with authority …. when the author fails it’s best to just say so (as the doc did) rather than offer platitude.

Do you really believe that this strange moot and thrust is truly an “Interesting submission as it relates to the diminished role of the Governor General in our form of government”? How so bro?

I give Grenville credit for his activism and energy but this submission is an “Eh, WTBadword is he getting at”.

BTW, how in heavens name is having the Queen any insurance policy to public service issues or a “tyrannical administration”?

As blogger @Simple noted wasn’t it the Yankees who went into Grenada…what did the Queen have to do with that!

And otherwise, we just saw a rather ridiculous (in my view) royal episode centered – according to press reports – the racial backlash to Prince Harry’s bride which caused a dissolution of sorts of members of the Buckingham Palace Inc. elite and yet here in lil Bim Mr Phillips thought in germane to essay a piece about OUR royal benefits from the Queen !

The young man has much energy, passion and grit but his political awareness and PR nous is horrendous!

To remind you it was the Governor General of Grenada Sir Paul Godwin Scoon who represented the Queen and maintained the government apparatus when the PRG ran aground and precipitated the US invasion.

  11. The role of governor general as the representative of the Crown has been diminished by various governments. We have even had a retired book keeper as acting GG, over-riding the Chief Justice, who is daily humiliated by the Barbadian political aristocracy.
By the way, Reagan did not even tell Thatcher he was going to invade Grenada. The two had a blazing row. It was Colin Powell who led the troops.

  12. Let the man who refer to as “a retired bookeeper” but who is a chartered accountant act as Governor General. The Chief Justice has more that enough judging to do. Let the Chief Justice and his staff clean up the backlog of criminal cases include the cases of young men charged with murder and who have been on remand for years.

Let the judicial system keep busy and either acquit or convict the men.

To keep a young man on hold for years at a time is just plain WRONG.

  13. I don’t know why Grenville has to rush to the defense of the British monarchy. The British monarchy has more that enough money and professional public relations staff to mount their own defense.

I wonder if Grenville has noticed that the only woman of color to have married into the British royal family has chosen to move from England to the west coast of North America, a distance of 4,706 miles, just about as far as a person can move and be still in the same world. Won’t even spend Christmas with the “family” If she and her husband moved any further away they would likely fall off the edge of the world. Lolll!!!

I say good for them. Keep the British royal family at a distance. We Bajans should do the same, about 5,000 miles is just about the right distance.

Are you suggesting that ‘dyed-in-the-woolly-haired’ Bajans of make-believe royal blue-blooded little England should continue with their “Royal insurance” policy after the current Chairperson of the board of directors of the Royal Political Insurance Company abdicates the throne (golden chair)?

The current chairperson is a nonagenarian and- as at today 6th February- has been on the job for 68 years; and despite having to endure another annus horribilis, a supremely royal aquamarine feat unsurpassed by any other British sovereign.

Why are you insisting that H M old Lizzie continues to demonstrate competence in supervising her servants both at home and abroad?

Don’t you think it’s time for retirement to give way to ‘less old’ blue blood?

Are you recommending her ‘hereditary replacement Old Prince Charlie to be the one to continue underwriting the local risks of dictatorship from the black duopoly which could end in political slaughter between the two warring ‘black’ tribes with the only collateral damage being the ‘red and blue’ yard fowls of both camps?

now, LOOK TO THE LEFT OF THE STAGE FOR THE ENTRANCE OF …………………you know who

  20. @ Grenville:

I was somewhat puzzled by your defense of the Monarchy, the timeliness of your defense, its relevance and necessity.

As a graduate student at London almost 50 years ago, I recall the late Leslie Wolf-Phillips’ criticisms of the monarchy. Wolf-Phillips seemed to have determined that the monarchy and its privileges were incompatible with democracy and unjustifiable in a so-called merit based system – and, thus, his arguments for the abolition of the monarchy. In fact, he suggested that the family was unqualified in any way.

I similarly recall the late Labour M.P, Willie Hamilton, (and his book “My Queen”). Hamilton, with good reason, described Princess Margaret as an “expensive kept woman”, based among other things on her £82,000 annual allowance (not to mention what some considered at the time her “scandalous” behavior, and no disrespect to the High School, which bets her name). Of the Queen Mother, Hamilton said, “it is obscene that this House (the Commons) should be spending its time giving an old lady like that £ 95,000 pounds”. In 1981 he (Hamilton) demanded that the Windsors and Spencers pay for “that disgusting display of conspicuous wealth” a/k/a the wedding of Prince Charles and Lady Diana Spencer, allegedly watched by more than a billion people the world over. Hamilton also argued for clawing back certain allowances given Her Majesty. (See The Guardian, Jan 26, 2000). After all, why should the tax payer have to pay for the lavish life styles of the rich and famous, like Diana and Fergie?

Further, the recent revelations concerning Prince Andrew and Jeffrey Epstein and their unsavory conduct support arguments of iconoclasts such as Wolf-Phillips and Hamilton for the monarchy’s abolition, no?

Arguably, the only useful function of this relic – the British Monarchy – is that beyond historical continuity and tradition, it lends an element of refinement/sophistication to the ruffian British. (I note in passing that, constitutionally, legislation must carry the Royal Assent, but this can be fixed). Further, some have always believed that the Duke of Gloucester, among the recent Royals, a trained architect, was the only academically qualified royal (notwithstanding Charles and Edward).

This does not mean that I support the argument by some that Barbados should become a republic, insofar as merely changing the label does nothing to solve serious economic, social and political problems confronting Barbados government and society.

Also, the time has long since passed for us as little boys and girls to be taken out of school and line the streets to waive to the Queen. Should we not let it go, as reasonable persons?

Ahem, my moniker is linked to your screed above herr Doctor so let me set MY record straighter!

I certainly do not perceive @Grenville as a moron . The man is dedicated to improvement and has gotten fedup with the status quo thus deciding to jump more publicly into the fray.

A review of the man’s career would show that he been involved for many years in shaping public discourse with the political, professional organizations and leadership generally on island … not shilling for him in the least but the man has led his subject matter professional body, led in his church, served a stint leading his alma mater old scholars group etc.

I thus give him credit for seeding, forming and put out a slate of candidates in the last election.

Is he political naive. Yes. Could he ever lead this nation. Unlikely, because it takes a lot of nasty hand-to-hand combat which he is unable/unwilling to do and possibly no one will ever do for him.

I said from his first forays with his SOLUTIONS that he was NOT ready, however I would NEVER label the man as a “stupid person” (moron). He is intelligent, personable and a man of integrity who has a strong belief in his faith.

So let’s be clear. I disagree with some of his ill founded beliefs but the man does get it right effectively at times outside his area of expertise.

I wish him well and will continue to lambaste him when he writes tripe!

  23. @ Dr. GP:

What a slashing attack on Grenville! Lord havest mercy!

You once reported that you were, as befits a man of faith, and a doctor with a well schooled bedside manner, “always kind and gentle”.

Do not therefore now be like Trump, GP. Among other things, minutes ago, at a “Prayer Breakfast”, he viciously attacked and even questioned Romney’s sexuality, all in retaliation for Romney’s vote to impeach him yesterday.

Rather, see James, “Camel Knees”, the brother of Jesus:, 3: 1-12.

“My brethren … we all stumble in many things …

Even so the tongue is a little member and boasts great things. See how great a forest a little fire kindles!
And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity. The tongue is so set among our members that it defiles the whole body, and sets on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire by hell.
For every kind of beast and bird, of reptile and creature of the sea, is tamed and has been tamed by mankind.
But no man can tame the tongue. It is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison.
With it we bless our God and Father, and with it we curse men, who have been made in the similitude of God.
Out of the same mouth proceeds blessing and cursing. My brother, these things ought not to be so.”

I dunno. Just another biblical illiterate – you appear to have been seriously and “royally” provoked – asking for more civil discourse. Surely, we can disagree without being disagreeable (as members of the Trump Chorus so often seem on the attack, unlike us more reasonable folks on the other side).

  31. In response.

Why did the British not intervene in Rwanda? Because they were not obligated to. That is the point of the article. If we are uninsured, we have to rely on the ‘kindness’ of the international community. That does not normally turn out well for the uninsured.

Why did the US intervene in Grenada? Because the Governor General, Scoon, had standing to activate the insurance and call for assistance. It was more convenient for the US to intervene, since it was in their interest (with the medical school full of US citizens, and aim to make Grenada communist).

Rwanda had no one with such standing, neither did Uganda. If you have a better suggestion to address the foreseen event, then why not make it?

True, the the planters were royalists in large part, but the British crown was never in its 400 year history called to rescue the island from invasion or starvation or epidemic as happen to be the case with every other English investment in the Americas. Barbadian taxes and levies on its private sector paid all its own bills even when public officers were hired from England to run the Government. None of our governors were paid and housed at British expense !! Barbados is not listed anywhere as ever being a Crown Colony. It has always been a private enterprise.

  37. The insurance policy is a real thing; we in the Caribbean saw the benefit of it during Granada. If the insurance policy weren’t called on we would be like Cuba now with Cuban masters no matter what Commie Sing Song says we may have had Cubans guarding the PM as the PM would not trust our own people as has happen in Venezuela.

The Queen does not interfere in our politics and a point that has not been considered in becoming a Republic is the enormous cost it would take to switch as every treaty would have to be renegotiated, every letterhead of government has to change, big things and little things will need to change. In addition, the risk for us to slide into tranny is too great for us as the Barbadian citizens are unarmed as they did first in Venezuela.

The world is getting more chaotic and unsavory people do not mean well for us even now plotting is going on to seize power. We all have to be vigilant, we are nearly there and the only insurance policy or hope of reprieve is to be taken away? The USA policy now is if you want freedom you have to fight for it yourself which is a good thing but we are disarmed and the next steps make sure no one will come to our aid using the guise of beaning “Truly Independent” if we as Barbadians do not see the danger we are doomed. DO YOU NOT SEE THAT THE ONLY PERSONS WHO CALL FOR US TO BE A REPUBLIC ARE THOSE WHO ARE AT THE UWI AND THOSE WHO LOVE MARXIST PHILOSOPHY AND THE BEGUILED.

  39. Going Republic might sound good in principle but when you change the legal entity to another legal entity every Treaty every Agreement even down to the letterhead has to change including all international Airline Routes, every Double Taxation Treaty will need to be changed and amended.

Do you think that Barbados in the Re-Negotiation is going to get the upper or lower hand…it certainly will not be the same. The only people that stand to benefit are Lawyers and Those Seeking Power Over The People.

Under the Commonwealth there may be an influence for us to stay Democratic where under a Republic nobody has our back and as a small Nation this is crucial. Too much power is already concentrated in the hands of the Prime Minister and it will be more so with no accountability. By becoming a Republic we will be on a fast road like Venezuela our neighbours. Although these are the effects of Socialism, this will definitely put more power into the hands of fewer people.

This is the worst possible time where Barbados is at its weakest financially and in the International Arena, we will be putting ourselves to Re- Negotiate everything. When they want to take people’s minds off of these trouble times in Barbados that Politicians who make promises and cannot fix, the strategy of the Left is Misdirection, Magicians use SLIGHT OF HAND all the time, it is their favourite tool.

SELFISHNESS IS ONE OF THE MORE COMMON FACES OF PRIDE. “HOW EVERYTHING AFFECTS ME” IS THE CENTER OF ALL THAT MATTERS—SELF-CONCEIT, SELF-PITY, WORLDLY SELF-FULFILLMENT, SELF-GRATIFICATION, AND SELF-SEEKING.

THE SCRIPTURES TESTIFY THAT THE PROUD ARE EASILY OFFENDED AND HOLD GRUDGES. The proud do not receive counsel or correction easily. See Prov. 15:10; Defensiveness is used by them to justify and rationalize their frailties and failures. (See Matt. 3:9; John 6:30–59.)

RE… GP February 4, 2020 7:30 PM “I HAVE NOT STARTED ON HIM YET. I MUST DEMONSTRATE THAT I AM NEITHER AN APOSTATE OR A FALSE TEACHER AS HE IS”

THE BIBLE BABBLER’S OWN MOUTH CONDEMNS HIM. HE MOTIVE IS TO DESTROY GP11.

RE “GP February 6, 2020 9:31 AM THEY WILL SEE THAT NEITHER OF THE TWO OF US ARE APOSTATES”

THE PROUD SELF-ESTEEM IS DETERMINED BY WHERE THEY ARE JUDGED TO BE ON THE LADDERS OF SUCCESS. They feel worthwhile as individuals if the numbers beneath them in achievement or intellect are large enough. PRIDE IS UGLY. IT SAYS, “IF YOU SUCCEED, I AM A FAILURE.”

RE GP February 5, 2020 5:51 PM “I AM AWARE THAT NO ONE ON BU CAN GIVE A SOUND REBUTTAL OF ANYTHING THAT I SAY…”

Fear of men’s judgment manifests itself in competition for men’s approval. The proud love “the praise of men more than the praise of God.” (John 12:42–43.) “What will men think of me?” weighs heavier than “What will God think of me?”

THE ANTIDOTE FOR PRIDE IS HUMILITY.

AS RUDYARD KIPLING PUT IT SO WELL:
    The tumult and the shouting dies;
The captains and the kings depart.
    Still stands thine ancient sacrifice,
An humble and a contrite heart.
Lord God of Hosts, be with us yet,
Lest we forget, lest we forget. …

God will have a humble people. Either we can choose to be humble or we can be compelled to be humble. Let us choose to be humble.

PRIDE IS THE GREAT STUMBLING WE MUST CLEANSE THE INNER VESSEL BY CONQUERING PRIDE. (Matthew 23:25–26.)

GRENVILLE PHILLIPS DON’T WORRY ABOUT THE OPINIONS OF THE GP’S IN THIS WORLD AND THE LARGE AMOUNT OF HARSH CRITICISM AS LONG AS YOU’RE RIGHT WITH THE LORD AND CONTENT WITH THE QUIET “APPLAUSE OF HEAVEN”, ALWAYS SEEK TO RESPOND TO GOD’S WILL WITH A GENUINE HEART AND TRUTHFUL MIND.

  42. IT SEEMS THAT WHEN GRENVILLE SAYS SO IT IS SO
IS HE THE MIGHTY SPARROW NOW
SOME OF US HAVE HAD SOLUTIONS FOR BARBADOS THAT WERE WELL THOUGHT OUT, AND THAT HAVE BEEN IMPLEMENTED, AND HAVE PROVED TO BE SUCCESSFUL ——AND THAT CAN NOT BE REFUTED

GRENVILLE HAS NO SOLUTIONS FOR BARBADOS ——AND THAT CAN NOT BE REFUTED EITHER UH LIE?

  43. @ Dr. GP:

But wunnah too cantankerous, way too argumentative, too fractious, too disputatious .

By contrast, consider the Psalmist, long ago:

“Behold how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity!

It is like the precious oil upon the head running down on the beard, the beard of Aaron …”, etc, etc.

A call to a better way! Why then wunnah so argumentative, especially, about the British monarchy, which history might have taught us was sometimes little more than another criminal enterprise with their own gangsters in their own right; and which Monarchy could have been reasonably discarded or seriously modified like many another European monarchies and as relevant as the King of Swaziland.

So what if Grenville fell asleep for the moment?

@ Grenville- re Reagan’s intervention in Grenada.

We must also consider overall context. I believe that the intervention took place circa the time of the bombing of the U.S marine barracks in Beirut, Lebanon. The Administration seemed relatively powerless to do anything to respond to the loss of 200+ American marines in that bombing.

It was far, far easier to take out the remnants of the New Jewel Movement than to wage war in retaliation in Beirut. There is no probative evidence that the medical students were ever in danger – simply a pretext.

  44. RE “Behold how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity!

  45. Well, all I can say, then, is kill him, like Cain killed Abel; this time because he has a different point of view, (even if wrong, as he is entitled to have).

  47. Dear Freedom Crier: If you are so afraid how do you manage to fall sleep at night? Do you need tablets in order to fall asleep?

  48. I am not sure why some people on this blog seem to think that we need the british for insurance. Britian ruled Barbados from 1627 to 1951 and that rule did not work too well for Barbados’ majority people. What evidence does anybody have that “Royal insurance” would work better for Barbadians this time around?

And hasn’t the United Kingdom left the European Union just this week or last? Why can’t you see that as the British not wanting to be bothered by others?

Hare brained ideas like these, especially wrapped up in religiosity are EXACTLY why I did not vote for Solutions Barbados.
