Monday Sermon – Expect Opposition

Jesus repeatedly explained that those who follow Him will have trouble.  Hear Jesus.

“I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace.  In this world you will have trouble.  But take heart!  I have overcome the world.”  (John 16:33)

Jesus provided a reason for the opposition.

“The student is not above the teacher, nor a servant above his master.  It is enough for students to be like their teachers, and servants like their masters. If the head of the house has been called Beelzebul, how much more the members of his household!”  (Matthew 10:24-25)

Jesus then explained what our response should be to those who try to offend us – we are not to fear them.  Hear Jesus.

“So do not be afraid of them, for there is nothing concealed that will not be disclosed, or hidden that will not be made known.  What I tell you in the dark, speak in the daylight; what is whispered in your ear, proclaim from the roofs.  Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather, be afraid of the One who can destroy both soul and body in hell.”  (Matthew 10:26-28)

Some think that trying to offend others is a game.  They are correct.  However, it is a very dangerous game – for them.  While Jesus instructs His followers to persist in sharing His message without fear, He explains the end of the offenders.  Hear Jesus again.

“Then He said to the disciples, “It is impossible that no offenses should come, but woe to him through whom they do come!  It would be better for him if a millstone were hung around his neck, and he were thrown into the sea, than that he should offend one of these little ones.”  (Luke 17:1-2)

The scriptures note that Jesus, “though He was a Son, yet He learned obedience by the things which He suffered.”  (Hebrews 5:8)  As followers of Jesus, we can expect to be trained in a similar manner.

So, welcome the offenses, since they can only benefit your growth.  What should your response be to the offender?   Paul gave a recommendation.

“Do not repay anyone evil for evil. Be careful to do what is right in the eyes of everyone.  If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone.  Do not take revenge, my dear friends, but leave room for God’s wrath, for it is written: “It is mine to avenge; I will repay,” says the Lord.”  (Romans 12:17-19)

    We are just trying to teach you how to teach, and telling the truth—like telling the old old story, which is NON-SOLUTIONS FOR BARBADOS HAS NO SOLUTIONS FOR BARBADOS.

    Then you take your next verse completely out of context…….. completely out of context!

    Remember the context of – Luke 17:1-2 specifically Jesus has set His face to Jerusalem and the Cross. He knows these are the last days with His disciples. And so He continues teaching them on things that really matter, preparing them for the time when He will no longer be with them and they would be ministering in His place.

    Luke now records the closing events of that astonishing Sabbath afternoon in Perea. It had begun with an invitation to dinner that was really a plot to snare Him. He had ended with the solemn unveiling before the souls of everyone there in the crowd of the eternal destiny of the lost and the redeemed. The Lord now turns to His disciples. His focus is on the life of ministry to which He has called them. It involves a special relationship, one that was both perilous and precious.

    Jesus is literally saying “‘It is impossible for the stumbling blocks not to come.” In other words, stumbling blocks are guaranteed to come in the life of the disciples. They could count on it! And we can too, because stumbling blocks will continually come to trip up the follower of Christ,

    Jesus is not here speaking to whiners who get a little opposition to their political endeavours. He is speaking to his followers who are SPREADING THE WORD OF GOD.
    PROCLAIMING THE LIE THAT SOLUTIONS BARBADOS HAS SOLUTIONS FOR BARBADOS IS CERTAINLY NOT SPREADING THE WORD OF GOD.

    NO ONE IS ATTACKING YOU FOR SPREADING THE WORD OF GOD.
    WE ARE SAYING THAT YOUR NON-SOLUTIONS FOR BARBADOS HAS NO SOLUTIONS FOR BARBADOS.

    Here you extract part of a verse in attempt to serve your purpose. Again you take the phrase out of its context.

    Here is the meaning of the passage from which you extracted that piece of Scripture.

    The author is discussing the identification of Jesus, our high priest, with us: He prayed and learned obedience through what He suffered (Hebrews 5:7-8 .

    Hebrews 5:7-8 reads thus
    7 Who in the days of his flesh, when he had offered up prayers and supplications with strong crying and tears unto him that was able to save him from death, and was heard in that he feared;
    8 Though he were a Son, yet learned he obedience by the things which he suffered;

    These verses elaborate on He 4:15, that Jesus can sympathize with our weaknesses because He has been tempted in all things as we are, yet without sin. Similar to the Levitical priests, Jesus could identify with the weaknesses of the people. But, unlike these priests, He had no sin of His own.

    “In the days of His flesh” refers to Jesus’ earthly life, but He 5:7 especially points to Jesus’ agony in the Garden of Gethsemane as He wrestled with the imminent prospect of taking our sins upon Himself. Jesus’ intense struggle in the Garden was not just over the thought of the physical agony of crucifixion. Rather, He was struggling with the thought
    of being separated from the Father as He bore our sin. This was so intense that He literally sweat blood.

    None of the gospel accounts report Jesus’ “loud crying and tears,” but this information probably came directly from one of the apostles who were present. It shows us that even though Jesus is fully God, and the cross was central to God’s predetermined plan (Acts 2:23; 4:27,28), the actual implementation of that plan was not easy. It was not just playacting a role! Jesus’ suffering in the Garden and on the cross was more intense than we can ever imagine, because we do not know what it was like to be one with the Father from all eternity until that dreadful hour.
    There is debate about the content of Jesus’ request. If He was asking to be saved from death, in what sense was His prayer heard, since He was not delivered from that awful death? Probably Jesus was asking to be sustained through the agony of bearing our sins, and to be brought through death into resurrection and complete restoration with the Father.

    Earlier you cited the truth that it is inevitable that stumbling blocks come – Jesus is literally saying “‘It is impossible for the stumbling blocks not to come.” In other words, stumbling blocks are guaranteed to come in the life of the disciples. They could count on it! And we can too, because stumbling blocks will continually come to trip up the follower of Christ.

    This is what you do every Monday with your false teaching and misinterpretation of the BIBLE.

    YOU ARE THE ONE WHO IS OFFENDING .
    YOU ARE THE SKANDALON OR STUMBLING BLOCK, BECAUSE YOU ARE LEADING FOLK ASTRAY WITH YOUR TEACHING. AND IN PROCLAIMING THAT NON SOLUTIONS BARBADOS HAS SOLITIONS FOR BARBADOS

    As noted all ready, followers of Jesus, are not expect to be trained in a similar manner as Jesus was in the Gethsemane.

    All believers who have obeyed the injunction of Peter in 2 Peter 3:18 to grow in grace and in the knowledge of Jesus know that instruction about the sufferings OF BELIEVERS is given in 1 Peter as well as 1 Corinthians 10;13

    Grenville says “So, welcome the offenses, since they can only benefit your growth. Then he comes and whines and strings a number of unrelated scriptures together, as is his wont.

    Why does he do this? Because a few of us correctly caution the country that NON SOLUTIONS HAS NO SOLUTIONS FOR BARBADOS.

    THIS IS THE SAME MAN THAT OFFENDS OTHERS BY CALLING THEM APOSTATES AND FALSE TEACHERS

    All sorts of fears obsess believers. Although some may be legitimate, most are vague, nameless feelings of apprehension. They rob us of confidence and joy, and keep us from spiritual health and effective­ness. The Bible has the solution to this problem. When we learn the fear of God, we will not be controlled by earthly terrors.

    We need not fear the darkness of this world, for we have Christ the light.

    When first heard the story my first instinct was to give her the benefit of doubt as a reason by which she might have been using a Teleprompter and mistakenly the “N” could have been placed as the beginning word of lakers
    The media role is to cause confusion and manipulate.
    Koby death has more than manifested that truth

    OPPOSITION NECESSARY

    Mortal life, offers God’s children the experiences needed to progress to perfection and realize the glories of eternal life. Progression comes by being tested to demonstrate one’s commitment to keep God’s commandments. To be tested we must have the agency to choose between alternatives, OPPOSITION IS ESSENTIAL TO PROVIDE SUCH ALTERNATIVES.

    IT IS OPPOSITION THAT ENABLES CHOICE, AND IT IS THE OPPORTUNITY OF MAKING THE RIGHT CHOICES THAT LEADS TO THE GROWTH THAT IS THE PURPOSE OF THE FATHER’S PLAN. THE SCRIPTURES TEACH THAT OPPOSITION ALLOWS FOR MEN AND WOMEN TO EXERCISE AGENCY AND ACT FOR THEMSELVES.

    As True Followers of Christ grow in Faith and Obedience, the Adversary continues his Assault on us so we would not make progress, he wants us to choose that which is not right so we would be miserable like him. God rarely infringes on the agency of His children by intervening against some for the relief of others. Nevertheless, He does ease their burdens and gives them peace the strength to bear such burdens.

    MORTALITY IS A TIME OF TESTING; THEREFORE CHOOSE THE GOOD PART, ACCORDING TO THE WORDS OF LIFE. GOD THE FATHER OF US ALL HAS NO OTHER OBJECT SAVE IT BE THE EVERLASTING WELFARE OF OUR SOULS.

    However i failed to see any real significance morally or financially that his impact has served well to the black community especially those living in the ghetto

    Kobe Bryant’s multiple impacts upon the worlds of basketball, sports, entertainment, fashion, and culture are numerous and global. Which explains why so many people are so deeply stunned and saddened with the news of his untimely passing on Sunday morning in suburban Los Angeles.

    I knew it was too good to be true! I noticed that he had ignored our negative comments for a little while and hoped he had found some semblance of sense tucked away in his hard head.

    But alas, he was saving it all for this thinly veiled attempt to place himself above us where he thinks he belongs.

    This intertwining of the political with the religious is the stuff of which mindless cults are made. The only thing that comforts me is that he isn’t good enough to make a success of it.

    Verily I say unto thee, “Beware of wolves in sheep’s clothing!”

    There is something wrong with this man. He cannot ignore the criticism of three people on a blog. Surely his time would be better spent on outlining his solutions for Barbados! But we are in his head and he cannot get us out. What kind of political leader is so preoccupied with three people on a blog, two of whom don’t even live here? Obviously, a self-absorbed political leader for whom the concerns of the people would always take second place.

    This is not a column meant to enlighten his readers but to settle personal scores.

    Not a good use of the Bible. Not what it was intended for at all.

    This Grenville is a lost cause. He may have some good ideas from time to time but he does not have the temperament required for a good prime minister.

    But he is a dead horse though so maybe we should stop flogging him. Still, it is hard when one sees such nonsense offered by a would be prime minister.

    …and the same can be said for many other athletes or entertainers who we dismiss as just a player of sports!

    It is difficult to understand why folks like @Mariposa put fingers to keyboard to scribe stuff that does not in any way properly represent reality!

    We may not hear about the efforts of folks like the Admiral David Robinson or Jalen Rose who used some of their millions to open and operate charter (private high/secondary) school catering to underserved Black communities or offering special opportunities for minorities. Similarly tennis pro Andre Agassi has operated a charter school. Of course there are many others who do significant work to improve the lot of minorities or those most in need of help.

    The point simply: stop and research before we spew.

    Beyond the above Kobe in particular was on a path to be a significant business influencer having (again like Admiral and others) infused lots of his earning into equity Investment funds and using that model as a vehicle to invest and develop those with great ideas to enhance social growth and spread financial stability/ownership of capital and all that (with an emphasis on minorities).

    Yes these guys and the folks – who paved the way before them like top baseball stars Jackie Robinson or Roberto Clemete who himself died in a tragic plane crash while enroute to deliver relief supplies to Nicaragua after a massive earthquake there- are just flesh and blood like us all, and just like us some transcend the basics of a career and actually have a tremendous impact on many who come into their orbits.

    Kobe Bryant was that type of man. .

    SO, WELCOME THE OFFENSES, SINCE THEY CAN ONLY BENEFIT YOUR GROWTH. WHAT SHOULD YOUR RESPONSE BE TO THE OFFENDER? PAUL GAVE A RECOMMENDATION.

    WHO THE CAP FITS CLAIM IT…

    WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO HAVE A SEARED CONSCIENCE?

    Answer: The Bible speaks of a seared conscience in 1 Timothy 4:2. The conscience is the God-given moral consciousness within each of us (Romans 2:15). If the conscience is “seared”—literally “cauterized”—then it has been rendered insensitive. Such a conscience does not work properly; it’s as if “spiritual scar tissue” has dulled the sense of right and wrong. Just as the hide of an animal scarred with a branding iron becomes numb to further pain, so the heart of an individual with a seared conscience is desensitized to moral pangs.

    Paul identifies those who have a seared conscience in 1 Timothy 4:1–2: “The Spirit clearly says that in later times some will abandon the faith and follow deceiving spirits and things taught by demons. Such teachings come through hypocritical liars, whose consciences have been seared as with a hot iron.” In this passage, we learn three things about false teachers who lead others into apostasy: 1) they are mouthpieces for evil spirits, since they promulgate “things taught by demons”; 2) they are hypocritical liars, since they wear a mask of holiness but are full of falsehood; and 3) they are unscrupulous, since their consciences have been cauterized. This explains much. How can false teachers lie with no shame and spread deception with no compunction? Because they have seared consciences. They are past feeling that lying is wrong.

    ONWARD AND UPWARDS GP11

    Earlier in the epistle, Paul speaks of the “good conscience” as opposed to the seared conscience. “Advancing God’s work,” he says, comes by faith, and love “comes from a pure heart and a good conscience and a sincere faith” (1 Timothy 1:4–5). A good conscience has the capability to tell right from wrong and is free from guilt. A person with a good conscience maintains his integrity. He enjoys fellowship with those who “walk in the light, as [Jesus] is in the light” (1 John 1:7). The lies of the devil are anathema to the one with a good conscience. Rather than follow the lies of apostates, he will “fight the battle well, holding on to faith and a good conscience” (1 Timothy 1:18–19).

    Still waiting to hear where his legacy would remained as as a staple as being one of the greatest basketball players that outside of being a great player Kobe contributed in those areas that would benefit mankind
    Haven’t read where he capitalized on his fame to have undertaken projects that would be of benefit to poor blacks or people of ethic groups far from it
    There is no denying that he was a exceptional basketball player
    However havent read where his influence was of such in greatness to make a bigger imprint on society for the underprivileged
    Yes i can put finger to computer and asked a question that is relevant to kobe being hero worshipped

Hadley Morash, the Executive Director of MVPhilanthropy, a not-for-profit organization that consults with athletes on their charitable giving strategies. Morash’s review of the foundation’s records reveals that the charity committed what she refers to as “five deadly don’ts.”
    — 1. Kobe didn’t give grants to support the mission. According to its Form 990 (the tax return for organizations exempt from income taxes), the foundation’s mission was the “sponsorship of programs to benefit children and prevent child abuse.” Yet, in 2001, the Foundation gave only one grant of $10,000 to the 9-11 Fire Fighters Fund.

    “If Kobe wanted to give to that Fund, he should have given personally, not from the money of his foundation,” says Morash, “especially if the foundation’s money was raised from the public with the understanding that it would support the cause of child abuse.”

    — 2. Kobe didn’t give out enough money per year, and the grants that were given over the five-year period were unfocused.

    “While $300,000 to different charities seems like a lot, it’s not when you realize that it was given over five years. $60,000 per year in charitable contributions by one of the world’s best paid athletes is simply not enough to make a real difference,” says Morash. “In addition, the grants were not given in a focused manner, so the likelihood is such that the charity’s mission of preventing child abuse was not accomplished.”

    — 3. Kobe didn’t have experienced management running his foundation.

    Kobe’s mother and sister were running the foundation for him, but according to Morash, “Unless his mother and sister have a degree in foundation management or other practical skills in the foundation sector, they shouldn’t have control over the foundation. Hire a professional – the return on investment will be worth it.”

    — 4. Kobe didn’t realize how time consuming running a foundation is.

    “It’s evident from a review of the foundation filings that as Kobe’s fame grew and he got married, the foundation’s accomplishments dwindled,” says Morash. “Too many athletes start foundations only to be sick of being involved with them a few years later. I counsel athletes that if you just want to give for a year or two, give from your own pocket and get the tax break, don’t waste money by going through the expense of starting a foundation.”

    — 5. Kobe didn’t realize the public would be watching.

    Concludes Morash: “As a celebrity, people are watching your every move. If your foundation closes down, people are going to notice. Because of this foundation’s failure, I believe that more foundations by Los Angeles-based athletes will be scrutinized in the near future. However, he then goes no further, and completely ignores the remainder, which he claims was “completely out of context…….. completely out of context!” It cannot be out of context because IT IS PART OF THE SAME VERSE.

    Porgie is the one who chopped the verse, and it was not even at a full stop, but part of Jesus’ comment. Let me provide the context – which is exactly what I did in the post.

    Regardless of whether you like GP’s personality or not HE KNOWS THE SUBJECT MATTER. I, who would disagree with him on his tendency to be literal know that I can depend on him for soundness. I am not an expert but I am not a novice by any means. This Grenville’s moronic mouthings are annoying to anyone who knows how to approach the interpretation of the Bible. And the problem is not one of denomination or doctrine. It is just one of comprehension.

    Did not Grenville learn in English comprehension that it is necessary to consider the context of someone’s words before meaning can be derived?

    So if for instance I say to my son. “Go ahead! Shoot him!” I cannot be arrested if i am playing a video game. And if I have not provided the context you would all jump to the conclusion that i am a killer.

    One has to consider to whom Jesus was speaking and under what circumstances.

    Forget Bible! What kind of English teachers did you people have???????

    Everyone knows that new clothes shrink so if you put a piece of new cloth to patch an older garment, when the new patch shrinks the hole would be made bigger and we would have wasted our time; it would not have fixed anything. In those olden days wine bottles would have been made of leather and during the process of turning to wine the leather bottle would have stretched. Here Christ was talking about ideas, His gospel, which He was teaching and saying we need to have a new heart to receive these things. Our old heart and ideas cannot hold the patch nor can it be added to the old. The old leather bottles have been stretched already and the new wine will burst the old bottles as it matures. Our old selves cannot contain the new Gospel He is teaching. And lastly a person who has drunk deeply of the accepted dogma and is comfortable will be reluctant to change. (He does not “straightway desireth new”) and would say the old dogma is better. The moral of the stories is that we need to have a new heart if we do not change enough to get a new heart we will fracture. Our wine will spill and lastly we may reject the new wine for the old. Commitment must be total to endure and enjoy that which Christ offers, a patch will not work.”

    You may remember last week. I simply provided Jesus command on adultery. I also repeated Jesus’ definition, which was in perfect context to His commandment. Then enter the BU bullies.

    They were not satisfied with me simply reproducing Jesus’ simple command. They wanted me to go into a complex in-depth study of adultery, explaining each time it is mentioned in the Bible.

    Of course that is all unnecessary – because Jesus already defined it. Nevertheless, that did not stop the well-worn accusations from the BU bullies – who appear unable to deviate from the path set for them.
