The Government is encouraging Barbadians overseas to remember their roots, and gather in Barbados next year.  This is a good initiative.  However, we should correct a fatal flaw in our culture before they arrive.  If we do not, then we risk reminding them of why they left.

We have a conscience to guide us in deciding what is just and unjust.  When we see injustice, we can either participate in, oppose, or ignore it.  To prevent us from acting on our conscience, oppressors tend to define places of self-preservation in our minds, where they hope we will remain – for their benefit.

During slavery, our fore-parents were ‘kept in their place’ with the threat of being sold.  After emancipation, they were ‘kept in their place’ with the threat of being deprived of work.  After independence, it was not the planters or merchants who wanted to keep us in our place, it was our politicians.

Our place was to be at the feet of one of their approved political parties.  To keep us in this place, they increased taxes at will to keep us living pay-cheque to pay-cheque, and dependent on their good graces.  People in that state are normally too afraid to do or say anything that will risk them losing their jobs.

Any Barbadian should be able to publicly comment on their ideas to improve Barbados.  However, if those comments are interpreted as a criticism of the Minister or the governing Party, then that person will not likely get appointed, promoted, or contracted during that political administration.

If the fellow offers the same advice during the other political administration, and it is similarly interpreted as a criticism of the Party, then his ‘goose is cooked’.  Therefore, Barbadians have learnt to resist their conscience to avoid becoming a political target.  The sustainable options for people who felt compelled to follow their conscience, was to either start their own business, or leave Barbados.

To keep us in our place, we are constantly reminded of how vulnerable our position is in Barbados.  This is the normally the role of dangerous political operatives.  However, sometimes politicians reveal more than they intend.  Consider a BLP Minister of Labour’s comments in Parliament, during a parliamentary debate in 1978.

“Now let me tell you this.  Anything with D L P, if you breathe, you cannot eat as far as I am concerned.  It is as simple as that.  This is war.  If your name is Douglas Leopold Phillips, by accident DLP, and you miss and approach me and I see it just in your face; no dice.”

He continued.  “Hitler would never feed the Americans to fight him.  Hitler would feed the Germans to fight the Americans, and this will be the ball game or the Prime Minister can take his instrument.  It is as simple as that.”

This intention seems to be demonstrated with every change of Government, where we expect public workers and contractors who supported the losing party to be dismissed (cannot eat), and those who supported the winning party to be rewarded (fed).

The Minister of Education recently noted that the cost of the schools summer maintenance program had increased from the initial estimate of $1.8M to $6.6M.  On 30 August 2019 in Parliament, she described the lucky 39 contractors who were given these contracts.

“We’ve been fortunate that we had a mix of contractors this year … we had some who were new, some who had been in existence for some time, and some who had, you know, who had not been given a fair share of the pie in previous years, for one reason or the other.  We have therefore attempted to try to share the work across the landscape, to ensure that there is greater application of the resources available to the Ministry.”

While it sounds good, sharing the ministry’s resources across the landscape does not correct past wrongs, but sustains them.  When contractors are given no-bid public contracts, they seem to produce poor-quality, high-maintenance, and over-priced work, that attracts complaints from the users.

The best way to right past wrongs is by doing right things.  The best way of growing Barbados’ economy is to allow all Barbadians to fairly participate, and allow all ideas to contend.  Barbadians need to be freed to present their ideas, without fear of being excluded from participating in Barbados’ economy.

Forcing Barbadians to consistently oppose their conscience can only damage them emotionally, spiritually and physically.  Before Barbadians gather in 2020, our politicians need to break those chains that they have placed on all Barbadians.  If those who have escaped this political intimidation, are forced to relive that pain, they will likely be too ashamed to introduce their children to an enslaved people.

Grenville…there ya go lying again, you and your now deadly enemy Scott thought ya could be the ultimate jesus freak DICTATORS, blocking all criticism …that is until ya fell out…but no one is having any of that backward, destructive nonsense…carry ya dictator wannabe attributes elsewhere…and don’t forget, ya are just like all the other public nuisances calling themselves politicians, ya got a 15 second attention span and a short memory..which i will have the pleasure of continually reminding you..including just how delusional ya are..

PLT…his post was doing fine until he started the ass kissing of the parasitic minorities, diluting his message in my view… slipping in some nonsensical lie to appease them and let them know he blames them for nothing….second time he is doing it and as long as he continues i will expose that utter stupidity..how can ya ass kiss those who continue to steal from the majority population and keep the people and island in a forever vice grip of stagnation and degradation to fill their greedy, corrupt racist pockets for all of 60 years is beyond me and then calling himself some fake christian….steupps.

then again, it does expose who he really is and it is no one the people and island needs.

  2. Bajans have to learn when they hear these public nuisances gushing about jesus and god while BEGGING you for your votes, to chase them away from around you and your families, they are toxic and dangerous and seek only to keep your minds ENSLAVED with THEIR culture of wickedness. Their only goal is to get close to the treasury while pretending otherwise.

it keeps happening over and over and the populi are not noticing because of the centuries old philosopy of believing these frauds posing as chrisitians…..all to their own detriment..

….one need only look at the condition of the island, the degradation, the poverty and homelessness to see the evil decades old HANDIWORK of these fake christians and frauds.

  3. Everyday it’s being highlighted for people to LEARN…

when will black people learn to get these vicious criminals out of their lives, even while knowing that the blacker they are, the more vicious and dangerous they can be…

  4. Waru,

GP1 & GP2 are both firm believers in Christ. Barbados remains a country rooted in the Christian faith.

The pastor, Andre Symmonds, has seen a huge growth in his congregation since his arrival. Expect these numbers to grow as the economy declines.

By the way his brother is an M. P.

    Thanks.

  6. Do we want to deny the right of Barbadians to practice the faith/religion of choice? Is this something enshrined in our constitution? Some of you need to have a grip.

  7. No one is denying anything…but a false narrative re christianity…has ENSLAVED the black mind for centuries, clearly done IRREPARABLE DAMAGE to generations of black people with no end in sight…christianity is one thing, dangerous toxic mind altering enslavement USING CHRISTIANITY is quite another..

….even worse the pope from the criminal organization vatican is trying to reverse their stance by admitting most of the philosopy created to enslave the black race and also other weak minds…was deliberate, most of what they were brainwashed and mindwashed into believing is AN OUTRIGHT LIE…and the ugly is it is embedded in constitutions…while not written in stone it is very dangerous to continue these lies created to control the minds of populace wordwide.and reversal of these crimes against humanity will take CENTURIES…just as longer or longer than it took these dead criminals to successfully implement before, during and post slavery.

Religion has now proven to be the single most danger to any society.

“Barbados remains a country rooted in the Christian faith.”

a slave society which keeps sliding deeper and deeper into poverty and despair…led by christian thieves…

“By the way his brother is an M. P.”

and we all know what his MP brother is accused of doing to injured claimants, with not a word from him…fraud..

  8. What the fraud pastor is not saying is that his god ONLY takes care of him when the GULLIBLE parishoners fills up his collection plates weekly…that is like the maybe former member of the CID, fraud squad i think, building some gigantic church and when people asked him where are you getting the money to build this massive building….he was like…god takes care of me, later we heard how much gun and drug running, bribery and corruption he was/is involved in.

that is as close to any god that any of them will ever be…because their ancestral GODS want nothing to do with any of these frauds.

  9. David

You still think that people really have a genuine choice about religion or much else!

  10. Pacha..it’s become clear that way back then in the desperate mind of the brutalized slaves watching their criminal slave masters destroy them both physically and mentally while praying to their false god, and shouting christianity in their faces with their false book… that the slaves saw salvation and freedom in that same false god…which will never materialize as long as black people continue to worship a nonexistent entity..designed to keep their minds nonfunctioning and useless.

Hope you are no longer trusting in Mother MAM with her “Come to Jesus” appeal?

Not even the pretend holy man holding a mock-up doctorate in theology the lowest of the morally Low(e) down has hearkened Mother Mia’s call to salvation.

Even Jesus, the eponymous lamb of God, must be shocked and bleating in his sarcophagus in the heavens to see what is said and done in his name in ‘Christian’ Barbados.

Maybe it’s time for him to visit that ‘House’ of born-again liars and thieves (aka lawyers) on Pinocchio Street off Palmetto Square and, according to the story book, do again what he did in the house of his Sky Father.

And like the Augean stables just clean out the temple of 30 tonnes of crooks, liars, hypocrites and scumbags.

  12. It is rubbish to opine that “the Church” has controlled society and enslaved the populace, or that “the Church” has developed “… a race of young Christian negroes…” who would be exemplary for their “… humility, submission, and obedience to their masters;”*

There seems to be a lack of understanding of the term “the Church”, “Christian”, “Christianity” on BU, but I would not dwell on that here.

I will however say what “the Church” achieved in influencing the lives of the youth in the area of Worthing, where I grew up. In the early 60’s, 4 boys from my gap and 6 others from the area walked each Sunday to Sunday school and to two other services where we sang in the choir at St Lawrence Anglican church. After Sunday school we walked back with folk from two families who attended Stream Gospel Hall.

Of the 4 boys in my gap alone, one is a Professor at UWI, one became a doctor, one an architect and the other a research chemist. The other is very active in safety and security issues in Bim.

Of the Plymouth Brethren friends, one became a doctor, another represented Bim in sport, taught for over 40 years at one of our secondary schools and is a lay preacher in the Methodist Church, another is a pastor in the USA.
NONE OF US HAVE MURDERED ANY ONE!

In 1960, Hawthorne Memorial Methodist church became a part of the lives of the people of Worthing. As teens many of us attended Wesley Guild –whether Methodist or Anglican or Brethren. Besides those mentioned above, many useful citizens of Barbados arose from those of us who attended Wesley Guild ; medical laboratory technicians, school teachers, a priest, a pastor in a Baptist church, a missionary to Brazil and then to Africa, one managed the school meals department for years……….and l can go on.

NONE OF US HAVE MURDERED ANY ONE OR HAVE BEEN JAILED!

But all were humble, submissive, and obedient servants to the cause of our country and to the community.

The Church certainly helped to developed a cadre of young Christian negroes… who have been exemplary for their lifestyles and long service to the cause of our country and to the community.

If the discipline , humility, submission, and obedience to their masters/superiors/leaders that was needed to make these servants of Barbados and the world was partially developed in “the church” directly or indirectly, then the exercises of the churches in that area was worth it.

I am sure that churches of all denominations, all over the island have contributed guidance, opportunities for learning leadership skills etc to the youth in their districts, and thus eventually to the life of the country.

With all its flaws and failings, “the Church” in Bim has made a worthy contribution

    Hi Grenville & GP,
You have both missed the point of my quote by Bishop Porteous. I was simply pointing out the obvious fact that the Anglican Church has been a fundamental tool of social control used by the Barbadian establishment over more than two centuries.
You could have pointed out that the Anglicans are not the Quakers or the Spiritual Baptists or the Methodists or the Moravians or the Adventists or the Mormons or the Catholics or the other 57 Varieties of Christians to which Bajans owe their loyalty. Indeed, I would hazard a guess that the Anglicans are in a distinct minority, but I have not counted.
So it is clear that SOME Churches in Barbados have made a worthy contribution to civil society, but it is also indisputable that the powers that be have always exploited the Christian Church to maintain a corrupt and inequitable status quo.

  15. @PLT

Has the church made any positive contributions to Barbadian society? Has any religion made any positive contribution to Barbadian society?

Sounds as if this ‘sermon’ on black subservience has been lifted directly from the Communist Manifesto or Mao’s Little Red Book with only the names of the authors redacted to cover up the plagiarism.

Why not be an equal opportunity critic and tell us about the “exercises” in sodomy and pedophilia which also took place within the confines of the same “church” even in the sanctum sanctorum of priestly immorality to rival the ‘known’ excesses of Holy Catholic Church?

The church- in which ever manifestation or construct of the human mind- is nothing but a parody of an earlier version of “Animal Farm”.

Various religious people in various churches have made positive contributions to Barbadian society, and other religious people in other churches have had an overwhelmingly negative effect on Barbadian society.
In my own estimation the net effect has been devastatingly destructive over the centuries, but YMMV.

It is my observation that for every Sarah Ann Gill that churches in Barbados have produced, they have produced dozens of pedophiles, rapists, and thieves; very many of these continue to operate behind the pulpit.
The much deeper damage inflicted by the church is in it’s silence in confronting the evils in society; this makes them deeply complicit.

  22. RE SOME Churches in Barbados have made a worthy contribution to civil society,

NO ALL CHURCH GROUPS have made a worthy contribution to civil society

THE MAJOR DENOMINATIONS WERE THE FOUNDATION OF OUR EDUCATIONAL SYSTEM THAT WE LIKE TO KNOCK HERE REGULARLY

EVEN THE MINOR CHURCH GROUPS, WHO ARE ESSENTIALLY MORE BIBLIO-CENTRIC have made a worthy contribution to civil society BY SUPPLYING SOME HUMBLE GODLY FOLK.

ACCORDING TO ACTS 2:42 THE ROLE OF A CHURCH IS CLEAR

And they continued stedfastly in the apostles’ doctrine and fellowship, and in breaking of bread, and in prayers.

ALL CHURCH GROUPS TEND TO DO THESE FOUR THINGS TO VARYING EXTENTS

FELLOWSHIP OR THE KOINIA IS ONE OF THE WAYS CHURCHES CONTRIBUTE WHICH IS NOT NECESSARILY WELL KNOWN AND the Barbadian establishment COULD NEVER CONTROL THIS

RE the obvious fact that the Anglican Church has been a fundamental tool of social control used by the Barbadian establishment over more than two centuries.
PLEASE EXPLAIN THIS WITH CONCRETE EXAMPLES
WHAT IS TRUE IS THAT BEFORE DISESTABLISHMENT IN 1969, MOST CHURCH ATTENDERS WERE ANGLICAN AND THE ESTABLISHMENT MEMBERS WERE MAINLY ANGLICANS

RE You could have pointed out that the Anglicans are not the Quakers or the Spiritual Baptists or the Methodists or the Moravians or the Adventists or the Mormons or the Catholics or the other 57 Varieties of Christians to which Bajans owe their loyalty.
    WHY?
    HOW DOES THAT AFFECT ANYTHING?
ALL OF THESE GROUPS DIFFER ESSENTIALLY IN THEIR POLITY AND IN THEIR INTERPRETATION OR MISINTERPRETATION OF THE WORD, BUT ALL OF THEM BY THEIR PRACTICE OF THE KOINIA SEEK TO maKe a worthy contribution to civil society, BY INFLUENCING THE SPIRITUALITY OF THEIR INDIVIDUAL MEMBERS TO VARYING EXTENTS

  28. (Quote):
And do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. But rather fear Him who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.” (Matthew 10:28)

It is mostly for this reason that the Church is normally feared by despots, because it can facilitate people being connected to their Creator. People connected to their Creator find their place as sons and daughters of God, and are unlikely to be intimidated by other people, including leaders. (Unquote).

Why are you attempting to hold the Papal bull by its ‘oxen tales’ instead of its horns of a dilemma?

Tell that to the likes of Galileo or the thousands of people who were dispatched ‘prematurely’ according to the orders of the Court of Inquisition.

Wasn’t the Holy Catholic Church-the godmother of Christianity- the bastion of oppression of the indigenous people of the so-called New World who were considered savages’ by the high and mighty in Rome?

Which institution, expected to protect always the soul and body of mankind, was tacitly instrumental in condoning and, by its convenient silence, gave moral sustenance to both Mussolini and Hitler’s reign of fascist terror?

    PS:
Not meaning to ‘goad’ you too much; but how can you claim to be one of the “sons and daughters of God” when your only book of truth speaks only of one child of the same “God”?

Isn’t Jesus your God’s only begotten son who died on the cross of the world for all of humanity?

Are you then claiming to be a brother of Jesus?

I do not feel the need to go to church every Sunday. I do not feel the need to obey, pastor, priest, or any man (or woman, less whitehilll gets me). And how do I love my neighbour, in the usual ways that I learnt form my parents’ examle. My mother had a saying “if you have a biscuit cake (don’t know why she referred to a dry biscuit as a yummy cake) you must share it with else. People complain that neighbours are not like they were in the good old days. I find that my neighbours are wonderful. They love me and look out for me and I love them and look out for them. They share with me, and I share with them. My latest gift is a neighbour who gives me yard fowl eggs don’t know if they are D yardfowls or B yardfowls lolll!!! but the eggs are delicious and once I have a dozen or so, I buy some lemons and i make lemon flavoured yard fowl pudding and I share it with others including with the egg donor who is no longer able to bake, but still gets to enjoy the occasional sweet treat.

Once upon a time when I had very little time, and less than no money, I was in significant debt, which fortunately I was able to service monthly i asked myself what could I do for others? A family member had recently had major surgery. I donated blood for the first time. During that same time I had read an essay titled “Other People’s Mothers” which spoke about how we love our own mothers, but how do we treat other people’s mothers? I then realized that in spite of having very little time, and less than no money, I actually had excellent health (remember all that ground food and exercise working the ground?) and could donate blood to help other people’s mothers (and fathers and husbands and sons and brothers I need to add before whitehill gets me), and I have continued to do so. This is my version of Christianity. It may not get me into the eternal kingdom (or Queendom) but it gets other people’s mothers and wives and daughters up and running again; gives them the ability to continue loving the men in their lives, including loving whitehill.

    “@Pachamama .
…..you should really shut up, because nobody takes you seriously”

Another excellent excuse for Pachamamum to start cussing afresh. Could another treat be coming the Miller’s way? Or will Pachamamum start to read a book per day?

It is your mind. I asked a simple question: if in your opinion the church (as an institution) or ay other religion has made a positive contribution to Barbadian society. From that you went on some self-justificatory verbal mystery tour intended to deceive or at best mislead.
To ordinary people it is a yes or no answer. To @PLT it is an opportunity play with ill-judged words. I think it reflects who you really are. End of conversation.

    ++++++++++++++++
    a) The church is not a single institution, so it cannot be coherently described as “an institution.” Any attempt to do so is either deliberately misleading or profoundly ignorant.
    b) “A positive contribution” is such imprecise terminology that it is almost meaningless… does it it mean a single positive contribution without taking negative contributions into account? or does it mean a positive balance in the contribution account after having taken both positive and negative elements into account?

My answer to your question is YES! Pastafarianism has made a positive contribution to Barbadian society because the Flying Spaghetti Monster makes me laugh and lowers my blood pressure.

    Happy now?

  48. @ Sargeant,

    NorthernObserver,
I really do enjoy it.The beauty of it all is that they do not know they have been tricked. You are quite perceptive.

On a more serious note, David and the Lord have blessed us with BU so that we can entertain and educate ourselves in a progressive manner. Instead of grasping this opportunity with both hands and transforming BU into an internationally respected brand, a few Jackasses have decided to use this forum to curse and insult their fellow Barbadians. Malice, hatred, and envy are their major stock-in-trade.The ironic twist in the tail of this tale is that if you were to round them up and stuff them in a crocus bag, collectively they are not worth what Paddy shot at.

How can we protect BU from them?
“If seven maids with seven mops Swept it for half a year, Do you suppose,” the Walrus said, “That they could get it clear?”

It is a shame. And we wonder why BLACKS languish at the shitty end of the social and economic totem pole in the UK, US etc.
