Minister of Education Santia Bradshaw Makes Shocking Revelation

Prime Minister Mia Mottley shows off a Kensington Oval ready for T20 World Cup

There has always been consensus by the BU family that at the root of our problems is an irrelevant and dysfunctional education system.  It was therefore important to listen  to Minister of Education Santia Bradshaw as she and her team appeared before the 2019 House Appropriation Debate – Standing Finance Committee OWN the problems with a promise to reform the education system.

It was interesting to note Bradshaw’s assessment of the current education system if compared to her predecessor Ronald Jones. He offered no similar critiques during his lengthy tenure as minister of education. What a difference a general election makes!

A poignant moment came in the presentation when Minister Bradshaw stated that problems identified by the criterion test at 9 years old were not remediated before the child had to do the 11+. It there translated to young children condemned as failures by society. Some may suggest another poignant moment occurred when the Prime Minister asked Chief Education Officer what recommendation would she make to improve the leadership in the schools. Her response will floor you!

    Who heard the snippet in the news from an educator who shared a view that to change terms of conditions to contract for principals will require a more relevant appraisal system?

    From what was shared an appraisal for a principal now takes the form of an interview with a peer and a couple officers from the MoE.

    Let all children have access to the Internet- both at school and extra-curriculum- and then you would see who is smart or who is forced-fed in order to shine academically because of their socio-economic polish called ‘special’ privileges.

    ICT can be the transformational instrument in the area of education and vocational training turning the dictatorial pedagogue into an unbiased facilitator.

    Such leveling of the educational playing-field through equal access to ICT resources would result in the socio-economic benefits which even those with disabilities would find ‘enviously appealing’.

    I know how you love this ideology. Yet, isn’t it the private school system which was so designed and not the public? Wasn’t the idea that if your offspring could get into a school you considered OK, they attended. If not, there were the Presentations, Mapps, St.Winifreds, Convent, Codringtons etc etc which were there to serve those who could afford them.
    For 3 years, my opening bat partner was from St.Andrew, the only in his family to attend a school other than the Alleyne. One of the better bowlers was from St.Peter, playing against CP was a homecoming for him. These boys were from poor families. We (team) all knew those who were from less privileged backgrounds and they were afforded first grabs at the food, which included a certain amount in the cap “for later”.
    Clearly, if your family could afford good early primary education and possibly tutoring, you had an advantage come the CEE. But it still allowed those who had the academic abilities, without that privilege to compete and be successful. And many did.

    Not really. My mother started her final pregnancy in July 1958 and attended the clinic in Speightstown. The clinic was long located right next to Elmer’s supermarket, in the tall narrow 3 story building, near to where the bank and public library are now located. Nurse Marjorie Mayers worked at that clinic, and Nurse Holita Horton, both ladies (now departed) were old enough to be your mother. I too attended that clinic from the time I was at elementary school. I attended the dentist at that clinic as well. My brother, before migrating worked briefly from that clinic as a public health inspector. My brother was born in the 1940’s. You were at elementary school during the the early 60’s. That clinic housed the public health inspectorate, a dentist, at least two nurses that can I remember, at least one doctor, did prenatal care, immunizations, provided contraceptive services (the pill). I used to pick up the contraceptive pills for an older married cousin who had five children and opted not to have any more) elder care and the regular cuts and scrapes care while you were still a boy at elementary school. The Enmore clinic, opposite the QEH was in operation too during that time, probably was in operation long, long before you were born, and providing the same services as at Speightstown

    In July 1958, you were 6 years old.

    You created the polyclinic service in Barbados, just like how Columbus “discovered’ the “new” world.

    Neither you nor Columbus did as claimed.

    The Speightstown Health Center was officially opened on 1st July 1953 by Colonial Governor Sir Robert Arundell making it the first parochial approach to organized public health on the island.[8] One month before its official opening, Dr. Maurice Byer was appointed its first Medical Health Officer with Sister Aurora Waters, who had recently completed her public health training in Jamaica and Trinidad, acting as Public Health Nurse. Nurses M. Mayers and B. Payne were added to the staff in September as junior Public Health Nurses while Mr. E. Baird acted as sanitary officer from 15th February 1954.

    All those mentioned did wonderful work, especially excellent preventative health work in the huge catchment area of that clinic in the 1950’s, 60’s 70’s. The public health inspectors were always out in the communities, and when the nurses were not in the clinic they were out on the road, walking out their shoe leather with house to house visits, especially to homes of pregnant and lactating mothers and to homes in which young children lived.

    If poly means many. It was a polyclinic, although the people in the community referred to it simply as “the clinic”, as it provided multiple health services to the community.

    I must admit though, I took the excellent care for granted. The nurses from that cllnic came to my rural elementary school sometime before August 1962 and delivered the oral polio vaccine to all 135 or so of us. this vaccine only came into commercial use in 1961, so the Ministry of health and the medical staff at the clinic were on the ball. Did not waste any time in vaccinating all of us.

    I totally agree…but when ministers are being paid huge salaries with perks to upgrade the education system and keep it current and progressive…and they instead, wilfully kept it in the dark ages…in the same state it was handed to them over 60 years ago, meant to demoralize, marginalize and sideline the vulnerable ….and despite the destruction it has caused generations of vulnerable children… for decades……that is called criminal neglect…

    And ya can’t find not black leader on the island that recognized that destruction decades ago …or even more recently …let alone have the intelligence to rid the island of that blighted system…..ah hope am proven wrong….and someone can actually do what is necessary.

    …it is not like if the parents and their children have access to the mechanisms that can affect the changes to the system……that is what governments are paid by taxpayers to do…so you can continue blaming the parents and children for lazy, backward governments not doing their jobs and neglecting everything ….it still will not change the reality that there is system failure on the island…and it can only get worse the more government refuses to make those adjustments.

    On March 6, 1857, in Dred Scott v. Sandford, the United States Supreme Court ruled that black people were not Americans citizens and could not sue in courts of law. The Court ruled against Dred Scott, an enslaved black man who tried to sue for his freedom.

    For years before this case began, Dred Scott was enslaved by Dr. John Emerson, a military physician who traveled and resided in several states and territories where slavery was illegal–always accompanied by Dred Scott. Dr. Emerson eventually took Mr. Scott back to Missouri, where slavery was legal. When Dr. Emerson died there in 1843, Mr. Scott was still enslaved.

    After Dr. Emerson’s death, Dred Scott and his wife, Harriet, sought freedom in the Missouri state courts. The Scotts argued that their prior residence in free territories had voided their enslavement. The Missouri Supreme Court ruled against the Scotts and authorized Dr. Emerson’s widow, Irene, to continue to own them. When Irene Emerson later gave her estate, including the Scotts, to her brother, John Sandford, Dred Scott brought suit in federal court.

    Written by Chief Justice Roger B. Taney, the U.S. Supreme Court’s Dred Scott decision held that the Fifth Amendment did not allow the federal government to deprive a citizen of property, including enslaved people, without due process of law. This ruling kept the Scotts legally enslaved, invalidated the Missouri Compromise and re-opened the question of slavery’s expansion into the territories. The resulting legal uncertainty greatly increased sectional tensions between northern and southern states and pushed the nation forward on the path toward civil war.

    Unable to win liberty in the courts, Dred and Harriet Scott were freed by a subsequent owner a few months after the decision. Dred Scott died just months later of tuberculosis, while Harriet Scott lived until 1876.”

To wit: contraceptive education and products, well baby care, immunizations, care of sick children, treatment of veneral diseases, care for elders with chronic non-communicable diseases, dental care, dispensing of prescription medicines, public health inspections where the inspectors checked for mosquitoes etc. Nurse Marjorie Mayers was hired shortly after the opening. The late Lyle Worrell and the late Mr. Greaves of St. Lucy worked from that clinic as public health inspectors, as did my brother. When these people were working hard providing comprehensive health services to the people of St. Lucy, St. Peter, St. James and St. Andrew you were still a breast feeding baby. Tom Adams was at that time a 21 year old student in London. Erskine Sandiford was a 16 year old student of Coleridge and Parry, Bernard St. John was 21, Mia’s parents had not yet met.

    So to try to take credit for work that was going on while you were still an infant in fundamentally dishonest. Just as dishonest as the claim that Columbus “discovered” the new world, when in fact he came to the “Americas” and found tens of millions of people who had come here tens of thousands of years before him, and had created thousands of highly complex societies.

    Not only was the polyclinc template created when you and Tom Adams were still children, you a suckling baby. But the service had been rolled out in the north and was fully functioning, providing the comprehensive health services for more that twenty years before you gained your medical degree. I haven’t checked but I expect that “Enmore” was fully functioning too then, because it is unlikely that the service would be rolled out in the second city (Speightstown) before it was rolled out in the capital Bridgetown.

    If you have claimed credit that you do not deserve to your wife, to your children to friends to family, to the BU people it is time to apologise.

    I agree, that I misunderstand.
    Seems you are describing “supremacy ideology” in general, as in methods used by people to ensure they sustain their level of ‘class’ or privilege, and this is done by systems/methods which seek to ‘keep others out’. And they all fall under the ideological title of “white supremacy ideology”.
    Son #1 went through Gr 4-12 in a ‘gifted’ program, as rookie parents we had no idea how it worked, one of his teachers suggested it. The class was 90% Asian, and the Asians would buy a house in the area of what they deemed the ‘best gifted program school’ and then register all their children at that address, so they qualified for the school. It was known as Asian Supremacy, where they sought to keep others out, because classroom size was limited, and they ‘believed’ they were academically superior. I believe under your terminology, this tactic would simply fall under ‘white supremacy ideology’.
    This said, I can appreciate how the CEE is skewed to privilege, yet all have a shot. In private, they can keep you out for basically any reason, and your parents must have the financial resources in the first place.
    My Asian example shows parents can manipulate geographical zoning to suit their needs.
    The idea of a level playing field doesn’t exist?

    i know Weston/St. Albans very well. My parents married at St. Alban’s long, long before GP’s parents ever met. My mother’s mother lived at Weston as did my aunt. I know the area like the palm of my hand. I don’t have to go asking anybody “Where Carew lived?” A two story wall house has been constructed on the west side of highway 1 at St. Alban’s not 100 feet away from where Carew lived.

    All that I have said about the clinic at Speightstown is true and has been documented in the historical record. You will notice that GP can cuss me by he cannot deny that the clinic offered the COMPREHENSIVE services that I have listed above. I had a tooth exteacted at that clinic in the early 60’2 when GP was still wearing short pants.

    Wunna is a couple of ole has-beens trying to make out that wunna invented sliced bread, or like Columbus “discovered” the “new world” or created the polyclinic system in Barbados.

    I don’t know Hants, but he came here yesterday and documented that the clinic at Speightstown was opened on July 1, 1953. Truly I don’t remember July 1, 1953, but I do know that I and many, many people in the north benefited from comprehensive health services at that clinic when GP was still a child.

    Tom Adams a middle class town boy, who went to England when he was still a teenager and who experienced the NHS system [rolled out between 1946 and 1948] for the first time, may not even have been aware that an HNS-like system in the form of clinics at Speightstown, and perhaps at Enmore as well had already been replicated in Barbados when Tom was but a lad. It is unlikely that the young Tom ever had the need to visit a public health clinic before he went to England while still a teenager.

    Note that you yourself did not say create, but “IMPROVED.” We can only improve something which already exists, which has already been created and maintained by Byer, Standard and the other people which I have mentioned by name.

    The health centers/polyclinics, whatever you want to call them were offering these services when Georgie Porgie was still a child “contraceptive education and products, well baby care, immunizations, care of sick children, treatment of venereal diseases, care for elders with chronic non-communicable diseases, dental care, dispensing of prescription medicines, public health inspections.”

    A rose by any other name would smell as sweet.

    The health centers/polyclinics were taking good care of us when Georgie Porgie was still a child.
