For years (article published in Barbados Underground in 2007) I have been saying that diabetes, hypertension, Alzheimer, erectile dysfunction and several other similar conditions all have the same cause, the inability of the body to metabolise carbohydrates effectively, a condition named Chronic Metabolic Collapse Syndrome.  The medical community is only now recognising this.  It will take at least another 15 years before they start recommending effective methods to prevent these conditions.

You know that the advance aging is probably the number cause of all diseases … unless of course your are immune compromised at birth … but as we age the body loses the mechanism to fight off disease like it did when we were uounger… take women for example: women are protected from disease duting the menopausal years … but after menopause women surpass men in practical all of the diseases …

  2. If you suffering from erectile dysfunction…..

  3. The only difference between the control group and the test group were two lessons, a total of 50 minutes spent teaching not math but a single idea: that the brain is a muscle. Giving it a harder workout makes you smarter. That alone improved their math scores.(Quote)

Cancer rates increase exponentially as we age … that why age, diet, environment, gender and genetics … are all factors in the cause of cancer…

  5. It is not a muscle but it behaves as a muscle. Strictly speaking and at the physical level, the brain is an organ, the most important one. However, there are some theories that describe the brain as a muscle in the sense that it can be trained to improve different cognitive functions like working memory or math skills. Maybe here is where the confusion appears. The fact is that new evidence shows the brain can be developed and function like a muscle (Quote).

    Georgie Porgie,
The train of 21st century national development has pulled out of the station. Barbados did not manage to get on board.
Left behind, as a people, we are now coming face -to-face with some grim realities similar to those faced by a young woman who has been continuously raped and sodomized by a group of disease-ridden infectious thugs.

Despite the millions of dollars spent, the fanciful speeches, and the propaganda of Barbados becoming a 1st world nation by 2020, we have now reached, instead, an uncharted destination in the middle of a financial and economic hell. Reaching this “hell” without planning for it was easy. One only had to raid the treasury. On the other hand, pulling in the same direction as a people to get out of this morass , will be very complicated and time-consuming. Failure will be followed by catastrophic consequences.

Barbados has the oldest population within CARICOM. This means that our aged must contribute to the national recovery effort in every mental and physical way. This article creates an excellent opportunity for BU readers to be educated and to gain practical insights into the prevention and treatment of major chronic diseases and disorders. Elderly Barbadians are its target group.

Against this background, I would like to urge and encourage you as much as possible to consider the positive contribution which you can make to this discussion.

THIS IS ALL A LOAD OF SHITE
THE BRAIN IS NOT A MUSCLE HISTOLOGICALY IT IS NERVE TISSUE NOT MUSCLE TISSUE

    THIS IS VERY BASIC HISTOLOGY
IT IS NOT A MUSCLE EMBRYOLOGICALLY
I AM SORRY BUT I WONT BE SENDING MY STELAR POWER POINTS ON ANY OF THESE TWO ASPECTS OF BRAIN DEVELOPMENT AND STRUCTURE

RE theories that describe the brain as a muscle in the sense that it can be trained to improve different cognitive functions like working memory or math skills
    THAT IS BULL SHIT
IF I SPOUT A THEORY THAT YOU AND LEXICON ARE GENIUSES DOES NOT MEAN THAT MY THEORY IS SOUND, BECAUSE I WOULD BE WRONG. YOU ARE BOTH MEDICAL ILLITERATES OK?
THE BRAIN IS NOT A MUSCLE IN ANY SENSE

RE The fact is that new evidence shows the brain can be developed and function like a muscle
THIS IS BULL SHIT THE FUNCTIONS OF A MUSCLE OR MUSCLE TISSUE ARE
    DISTINCTIVE
IN LIKE MANNER THE FUNCTIONS OF NERVE TISSUE AND THE BRAIN ARE ALSO DISTINCTIVE AND ARE IN NO WAY ALIKE

YOU CAN BRING ALL THE NEW EVIDENCE YOU WANT
    BRAIN IS NERVOUS TISSUE
    MUSCLE IS MUSCLE TISSUE
AND THEY ARE BOTH DISTINCTIVE IN BOTH THEIR STRUCTURE AND FUNCTION

I am not making a choice. I am not a bio-medical expert. My point is to show that there are other views from experts, including Ivy League experts.
If it helps, BBC Radio Four recently did an hour-long programme hosted by a scientist, claiming that the brain is a muscle. If you have expertise plse let us know.
My interest in the subject is in the emerging sub-discipline of neuro-criminology, in which experts now say that teenage deviant behaviour is outside their control.
I leave the medical experts to argue it out.

  28. Anatomically, your brain isn’t a muscle; although it contains a bit of muscle, it’s predominantly gray and white matter, with cellular structure and function far different (and more complex) than that of muscle. However, there’s good reason why many people compare the brain to muscle – in both cases, the “Use it or lose it” principle applies.
Evidence suggests mental stimulation improves brain function and reduces the risk of cognitive decline and related diseases. Mental stimulation or “exercise” helps the brain grow stronger, faster and better able to complete the millions of daily tasks it is charged with, from memory to problem solving to attention; not to mention controlling every aspect of the rest of the body(Quote)

    “@Walter
Your opinion on the recent acquisition (combination) transaction between Sagicor and the special purpose Canadian is missing from BU”

    David,
Please do not interpret my answer as being harsh. It is simply an attempt on my part to show you how ruthless we must become in our thinking.

Right now, Barbados is in “duck’s guts”, as Bajans would say.
    To get out, we need:
New industries to provide huge additional employment opportunities
Many profitable Barbadian businesses to spread local wealth
Companies earning foreign exchange for Barbados

Thus, Sagicor, a foreign company with a business model aimed at taking as much Forex out of Barbados as it can, does not come on my radar if I am thinking creatively and innovatively to get Barbados out of a rut.

    PS:
Dodridge Miller, the current CEO, is a Barbadian so we all still feel a sense of closeness to Sagicor. Should Dodridge be replaced by a foreign CEO tomorrow, what would make Sagicor different from Manufacturers Life which operated in Barbados a few years ago, or ICBL for that matter?

  30. @Walter

If it is any consolation the HQ is in Barbados.

  31. RE Anatomically, your brain isn’t a muscle; PERIOD DUMMY!

RE although it contains a bit of muscle, THE BRAIN CONTAINS NO MUSCLE TISSUE DUMMY! NONE!

it’s predominantly gray and white matter, THESE ARE NERVE CELLS—NERVE TISSUE NOT MUSCLE

with cellular structure and function far different (and more complex) than that of muscle.
THE BRAIN IS DESIGNED FOR ITS FUNCTION AND EACH OF THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF MUSCLES ARE DESIGNED FOR EACH OF THEIR SPECIFIC FUNCTIONS

RE However, there’s good reason why many people compare the brain to muscle – in both cases, the “Use it or lose it” principle applies. THIS DOES NOT MAKE IT A MUSCLE THE “Use it or lose it” principle applies TO OTHER TISSUES AND ORGANS. THE BRAIN CAN NOT BE COMPARED TO MUSCLE AT ALL

RE EVidence suggests mental stimulation improves brain function and reduces the risk of cognitive decline and related diseases. SO WHAT? THE BRAIN IS NOT MUSCLE!

RE Mental stimulation or “exercise” helps the brain grow stronger, faster and better able to complete the millions of daily tasks it is charged with, from memory to problem solving to attention; not to mention controlling every aspect of the rest of the body THAT IS VERY BASIC PHYSIOLOGY EXCEPT THAT THE BRAIN DOES NOT BECOME STRONGER

  32. Is the Brain Like a Muscle? Lessons from Debunking a Seductive, But Incorrect, Idea

We often reason through analogies. When something is confusing, we can try to tie it back to something we understand better.
Very often, this process it at the heart of scientific understanding. Charles Darwin formed his famous theory of evolution through natural selection by forming an analogy with artificial selection, the process of human intervention to create new breeds of dogs, cats and corn.
However, sometimes this process backfires. An analogy which seems productive ends up giving misleading impressions. The solar-system model of the atom (Bohr model), in which electrons orbit the nucleus, was such a theory. It predicted that electrons would be constantly accelerating, and thus should emit light continuously until they fell into the nucleus. A better analogy, with wave functions and probabilistic clouds, took root instead.
Given this double-edged sword of analogical reasoning, let’s turn to one about learning itself: is the brain like a muscle?
    Measuring the Analogy
Obviously the brain is not literally a muscle. It’s made of neurons and glial cells, not muscle fibers. So on this level, the two can’t possibly be equated. But what about in its function?
Here it really depends on what features you want to compare. Muscles can change and improve, and so can the brain. Muscles seem to experience fatigue with use, and although the brain may turn out to be more complicated, I definitely feel tired after solving math problems all day, and I bet you do too.
However, since two different things can be compared in an unlimited number of ways, the strength of an analogy is never in the analogy itself—it’s what you use it for. And in this case, the analogy saying the brain is like a muscle has had a long history and a very specific implication.
Prior to the early part of the twentieth century, the popular educational dogma was formal discipline theory. This theory reasoned that the brain was possessive of different intellectual capabilities, broadly defined: reasoning, perception, affect, memory, etc.. Each of these, it was assumed, was like a muscle. If you flexed your reasoning faculty with a game of chess, it was assumed, this would help you with reasoning about mathematics, just as flexing your biceps by lifting weights can make you stronger in an arm wrestle.(Quote)

Whaloss…oh me miserum and all that …I hope we can agree that the erectile tool is a muscle and when we males cannot suitably control the flow of blood there we do tend to get miserable, argumentative and sometimes real dread…all that awesome muscle memory teachings we diligently practiced now means nada…😂 What a sad taste of life!

So yes Mr Blogmaster you are so right that as we get older … it will unfortunately leave some members in a spot of bother.

Some of us will be lucky and can resort to a more vigorous exercise regimen to improve the health; some are too far gone and go on an endless ‘diet’ of medication.

And then there are those who abuse those “miracle cures” and seek a new youthfulness of activity…a few have given new meaning to that old Western movie term of “dying in the saddle”… or for the westerns movie buffs out there maybe a mismash of ‘Have Muscle, Will Travel’. 😂

Seriously tho we all have to focus these health issues better…the side show of ‘what is a muscle’ reminds me of the crazy debate which erupted years ago when Dr Fraser (as memory serves) made bold to opine on a new show of the day celebrating the plus size ladies ….

He took the opportunity to speak on one of his key issues of a growing overweight Bdos and all the related issues highlighted herein but the public debate got sidetracked on the rights of the ladies to express themselves and all that…completely dismissing the REAL concerns….similar to inane folly side path here as well.

A muscle is a muscle…period…how another organ mimics that or the theories on it cannot alter the basic biology…good Lord…Hal fully understands and has noted that. … In a similar context plus size ladies so look gorgeous but their basic physiology has not much too do with the substantive debate of too much greasy, unhealty food used by folks who now drive everywhere, eat to excess and value exercise as ‘show n tell’ badge for endless cell phone gossip.

@Hal, you were taken to task for your remark about the brain as a muscle…muscle memory would be the lighthearted retort! …However, I would like to ask you about another of your ‘loose remarks….you described a blogger (maybe) as a psychopath!. REALLY!

To quote you: I am not a doctor, nor a neurologist, but I know a psychopath when I see one, even if he is a qualified doctor.… What grand exaggeration.

Bloggers here are rude, disturbing (and disturbed), reprehensible and a host of other words…but, but to call someone a psychopath just from the behaviour here or what nastiness they described from their past is a bridge too far…even for you!

Bro change ur glasses, get glasses or otherwise treat your eye problems…if are seeing…“a person suffering from chronic mental disorder with abnormal or violent social behavior”…or “… a personality disorder characterized by persistent antisocial behavior, impaired empathy and remorse, and bold, disinhibited, and egotistical traits” just from stupid, often puerile blogging then you are very good.

Some may see that there is a mirror effect in play with…persistent antisocial behavior, impaired empathy and remorse, and bold, disinhibited, and egotistical traits… Just saying, bro.🤣

We can agree that lots of us here can become “unstable and aggressive” as the term is INFORMALLY defined at times, but no one here I would hope is anywhere near that of a psychopatic personality!

  45. Hal Austin December 1, 2018 12:53 PM “Our problem as a nation is getting it up too much. The brainis a muscle too.”

    Nope.

I put it to you that our problem as a nation is NOT getting it up enough. Our birth rate is only 1.8, well below replacement level.

Only 5 babies born in Barbados yesterday, whereas a generation ago 12 to 15 babies would have been born.

We are NOT getting it up enough I say.

Oh and by the way, the brain is NOT a muscle.

  46. If Hal had ever worked on a farm as I have, and had seen all kinds of brains, fowl brain, pig brain, sheep brain, turkey brain, duck brain, rabbit brain.

He would know for sure that the brain is NOT a muscle. In fact brains have ZERO muscle tissue.

  47. It is time to graduate from the linear understanding and exercises of the modality, medicine and become effective in curbing the challenges of non communicable “diseases”.

Salt, the fraternity excuse to points their fingers at as probable cause.
The anatomy requires TWELVE (12) SALTS, for optimum performance.

Will the medical fraternity admit that 90% of all manmade chemicals are added to foods and drinks as “additives and preservatives”, which accumulates in the anatomy at a rate GREATER than that which the liver is unable to cleanse adequately, becoming congested and burdened, unable to maintain a healthy functional environment, resulting in a CHEMICALLY TOXIC and DISEASED CONDITIONS in the body. Other factors are also at play here.

The Brain is not a muscle, but a cellulose membrane of sorts that housed neurological networks and pathways and synapses that interprets nerve signals and issue related responses. Also it can create, develop or manifest new networks according to impulses and stimuli.
If by definition, that cells do differentiate in those of brain and muscle as cells collectively contracts and expand muscle, can the heart be determined a muscle as well as an organ? Similarly, to sever the spinal column, where all nerve impulses are channeled to the brain, what is it that keeps other organs
    functioning?

Aging, is not about less/shortened telomeres but about cell division, diet and conscious affirmations.

Non communicable diseases are curbed, firstly by acceptance of the condition, the belief that it can and will be reversed, to observe ones diet and change that diet if it is acidic in nature, use fructose instead of a sucrose based diet, most importantly is the DETOXIFYING of the LIVER as well as a good alkali or ionic foot bath.

    For Alzheimer..
Listen to binaural beats (high pitch sounds) using the isochronic pulse of 1.45Hz, which is associated to the tri-thalamic entrainment formatting the disintegration of the plaque in the brain which can benefit dyslexics and people with Alzheimer’s, and also using multiple binaural beats that range from 3Hz to 10Hz.

Those who are sick need find a physician, still, as directed.. “Physician, go heal thyself”.. familiar words indeed, above all, we are shown that WE CAN HEAL OURSELVES…. BY CONCIOUS DIRECTIVES towards our bodies, more so now than ever before.

  48. @Bentley “diabetes, hypertension, Alzheimer, erectile dysfunction.”

Don’t know much about Alzheimer’s, but it seems to me that there might be a strong genetic component. Some families seem to have multiple cases of Alzheimer’s over several generations and some families seem to have none. And social isolation might increase the likelihood.

Diabetes both type 1 and type 2 seem to have some genetic component, especially type 1. That said most of us nowadays are probably drinking and eating too much high sugar foods, like a friend who dranks a two liter container of carbonated beverage/sweet drink every day. I bet that eating and drinking like that is very bad for the health. I would say drink water if you are thirsty. And eat some meat or fish and some vegetables, fruit, ground provisions/whole foods when you are hungry. I would say as well, exercise regularly. Walk, run, swim, hit the gym, or like me hit the ground/garden with a hoe for a couple of hours every other day or so.
And the same food exercise regimen for hypertension, and reduce your salt intake, especially watch out for salt sneaked into your foods by commercial food processors.
