Your message to the BLOGMASTER was sent

A member of the BU community posed the question to the blogmaster via private message – “Where does the average Bajan INVEST today- now?”.

There is a quick answer. There is a complex answer. The blogmaster is not qualified to address the complex answer, however, members of the BU family are free to fill the gap.

The question was influenced against the backdrop of government’s retrenchment exercise and should include private sector employees where similar retrenchment programs have been occurring in the post 2008 period.

Before the question posed can be answered it is important to understand how savings and investment differ. In simple terms individual savings is the difference between income earned – a salary – minus CONSUMPTION expenditure e.g. car, food, entertainment etc. To clarify, if the individual purchases an Aquaponics system (to produce food) we should define this as an INVESTMENT expenditure. The investment expenditure reduces household cost and creates a revenue opportunity.

The most recent Financial Stability Report page 20 produced by the Central Bank confirmed what we know, Barbadian individuals and other entities continue to save in the financial system. Some dismiss the high level of savings to Barbadians being risk averse others will counter by suggesting that we should consider other determinants. The blogmaster will leave this part of the debate to the BU intelligentsia except to say. Traditional investment opportunities are limited in Barbados and BLACK Barbadians especially have confused saving with the bank or credit union as an investment.

Source: 2017 Financial Stability Report

This blog is not meant to denigrate Barbadians. However, it is accurate to say that the financial IQ of Barbadians combined with a passive entrepreneurial disposition has defined our investment outlook. Some members of the BU family will point to how the education system has been designed in a post colonial period that has led to our state of mind.

To answer the question posed by the member (he is free to expose himself). Even in the so called ‘good times’ the investment market in Barbados can be accurately described as closed. Bear in mind the blogmaster does not consider individual savings in financial institutions as investment. Where are locals – those being displaced by government – able to invest money to generate meaningful income that is not illiguid? There is no active equity market. There is Fortress Fund and a couple other mutual funds that show moderate ROIs. You get the picture!

Earlier in the blog BLACK was capitalized for a reason. It was not meant to be an incendiary verbal, simply to differentiate how Blacks and minority groups approach investing in the same local market.   For years minority groups have established Pooled Investment Funds. In a simple definition, an opportunity is identified and a group of individuals come together based on a shared position to invest in the idea and agree to share the risk. The idea maybe to buy property to rent or flip, acquire an equity stake in an under capitalized business, transport an emerging business concept from offshore to local market … you get the picture. The more sophisticated investment is that a few pension funds managers act as loan sharks. Is this activity regulated? A blog for another day. However it must be said that all investments bear risk!

The upside to what is happening to displaced workers in Barbados it that it may serve to disrupt a passive state of mind. This is where the national conversation needs to be anchored instead of the old way thinking. It is time to change the thinking.

Over the last 30 years, I have been receiving 3 % over the banks. There are no monthly charges and my money is insured up to a maximum of $U.S. 30,000. However in order to bank with this institution one has to be referred. My mother (died at 102 years introduced me). Now I am getting 4.5% and interest is paid on the last day of the month. When I require money to be paid, to an institution, I request them to send out a manager’s cheque. No minimum is required however a referral gets the account started. They once were paying 11.5%. As one knows, money doubles every 7 years when interest is 10%. If one needs money in a rush, you can call and and pick up the cash from the cashier. Life is still good in Barbados if you have the right contacts.

  4. In jan. a buddy and I bought a property put 30 percent down because of timing we had to go to a mortgage broke, he charged us 13000 in a finders fee 7.13 percent interest 600 dollars for appraisal fee and charged us 10000 break out fee when I refinanced it in aug on 600 grand. ….put your money in mortgages…. but only on property you may have to own.

  5. Investing in battery based renewable energy (PV) systems equate to savings at the retail price of electricity. It also assures some level of energy security in the event of a utility outage.
Simple net metering arrangements would further improve this opportunity by allowing prosumers to back-feed excess during sunlight and purchase in the evenings as reduced cycling would extend battery life and reduce costs so we must lobby GOB / FTC.
Financial empowerment of households and small businesses should be made a priority. Instituting Socio-environomic policies that encourage all citizens to join the REgeneration will guarantee harmony and prosperity to the Nation.

    Very good and interesting article.
Investments are a relatively new activity for the majority of us Black Barbadians. We never started to earn any extravagant sums of money , until within the last fifteen or so years, in large numbers.
Today we have a growing number of young corporate Blacks who should be investing more. Unfortunately , many young Black professionals seem to concentrate on lifestyles rather than investments. It is possible that the professionals: law , medicine etc who started their professions in the late 60s-70s may have done far better than those starting today.
No wonder the legal professional has so many issues.
We have some ways to go but there has been some progress.
    Good article…….. refreshing.

  7. A hearty good morning to all Barbadians.

I received a statement from CIBC First Caribbean International Bank and it told me that my CD is renewed for 1 year at 0.05%.
I would prefer to (1) donate it to charity, (2) loan it to young entrepreneur or (3) bring my family to Barbados and have a good time.

I suspect that there may be old ‘useless’ deposits that could be pooled together and used to give some businesses a jump-start. But this should be seen as investing and not as a gift. One of the unanswered questions is how do we vet these beginning entrepreneurs?

  8. We black people really need to sort out our thinking if we want to progress. Any obstacles in our way are surmountable over A PERIOD OF TIME. It is our thinking that does not allow us to overcome. And here comes whitey sowing distrust among us! “Pool investing……..Barnum’s circus!” Blah blah blah….

Bajans should be investing in their own personal versatility at this time. Skills and tools. Perhaps the two most important among these are decorum (particularly language) and computer proficiency – they will take you everywhere and you can take them with you.

Why in the world would anyone want to as much lend / invest in the betterment of barbados

  16. The very first and best investment is in yourself!!! Learn everything you can from people who have experience not just book theory. If you are planning to invest in a business go and work for someone else in the same or similar business, as you would like to learn from them and their mistakes. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

It didn’t happen in the time of Frederick Douglass or Marcus Garvey or Paul Robeson or Malcolm X.
Neither will it happen in your time or your son’s time as long as black people worship a vindictive god which has assigned them the role of hewers of wood and drawers of water to the rest of the world and only good for performing well in the real Barnum & Bailey circus of life in mass sporting and entertaining activities.

Can you explain the reason for the black ‘educated’ Bajan situation where they being the majority find themselves in the employ of immigrant groups like the Indians and Syrians?

Do black Bajan emigrate and become business owners and employers of the native population or is still how it prevails in Barbados?
Black Bajans first have to free themselves from mental slavery so deeply enforced in their unjustified acceptance of a religion which contributed immensely to their physical enslavement and continues to be the fulcrum of their socio-economic inferiority to other ethnic groups.

I may have posted this already but I will post it again because the predictive text messed that one up.

I opined earlier that this article has a “double edge.”

I suspect that its author is either a Sandra Husbands or Lynette Holder /”Government of Barbados administration representative” as opposed to the loyal bajan like say Andrew Simpson or Theophillus Gazerts and some of the others who commented here already.

The focus of this article is to

    (1) gather ideas from an unsuspecting public to provide ideas and meet the needs of those people to be retrenched and

    (2) find a mechanism through which the powers that be, can enroll, filter the chaff of ideas currently being submitted and monitor the subscribers thereafter.

The fact is, as is evidenced by this proxy article, THEY SIMPLY DO NOT KNOW HOW TO PROMOTE THIS ALTERNATIVE BUT CRITICAL INVESTMENT STRATEGY.

There is nothing really wrong with that since the conversation has to begin someplace, it’s just the modality being used and the CONTINUOUS Sleight of Hand.

This is another stab at their Ideas4Barbados attempt and seeks to glean ideas from an unsuspecting public under their continuing modus of “never seeking to honour the contributions of the people from whom they teif ideas”

It is doomed to fail if, AT COMMENCEMENT, one’s government does not declare its hand to the audience of its citizenry.

Change up the deceit ting and bring a credible structure to the Citizen Participatory Methodology Construct, one which is more professional and respectful as opposed to this, “we the Government of Barbados, want your ideas, FOR FREE!!!”

Look how, with one simple statement, Theophillus Gazerts drove a torpedo through the bottom of your vessel!

    He says and I quote

“…I suspect that there may be old ‘useless’ deposits that could be pooled together and used to give some businesses a jump-start.

But this should be seen as investing and not as a gift.

One of the unanswered questions is how do we vet these beginning entrepreneurs???…”

De ole man, who has been doing dis sh#t for some time, will answer you Theophillus and say this.

None of the existing Entrepreneurial agencies in Barbados will work as a logical pathway for your investment because, in addition to the types of staff who always seeking to participate in the loans they giving you, they are all structured wrong.

The costs for administering your donation e.g. the light, water, salaries of officers at Fund Excess, EGFL and BIDC, will eat up your money without a cent being seen by an awardee

And therein lies your challenge Theophillus, you dont even know who is a viable candidate to receive your investment or what business they are doing.

And that brings me back to the same ole ingrunt broken record of “THERE IS NO VERIFIABLE BASELINE DATA..”

But de vagabonds got every body paying $1700 to register a company and other pernicious and dissuading actions directed against entrepreneurs BUT STILL LACK VERIFIABLE BASELJNE DATA.

You Theophillus, even with all this data all over de place, ent got a name to make your grameen-like investment to an entrepreneur

And please, do not tell me bout Sandra and Lynette personal fiefdom at the Small Business Association, DEM IS CLUELESS ABOUT THE FINANCIAL ABILITY OF THEIR MEMBERS.

All Sandra and Lynette want to know is “if you annual membership fees are paid”, and, now that Mia giving dem $10 million for de small man, that information now is appended by if dat small man voted for Mia.

Forgive de ole Man drivel in de Rumshop this morning but I just being real…

  20. @Lawson,
You are right. Pooled investments are best for the small retail investor. But first, PAY OFF YOUR DEBT. That Bds$340m owed on credit cards must be reduced, or even better cleared, before entertaining ideas of investing.

  22. The person who recommended this blog will now conclude you are a conspiracy theorist. Why don’t you comment on the substantive issue raised and leave the BS at the door?

  23. Miller,

As I keep telling you – the Christian religion did not do that to ME. I can see where it could do that to the weak-mined who do not think for themselves but swallow any religion hook, line and sinker. Away with the dogma, I say! What is at the heart of religion?

A good understanding of the Bible requires one to be brave enough to question the Bible. For me that was automatic because I question everything. The Bible is FLAWED because MEN WROTE IT! However it did manage to give the discerning a glimpse of a God who is NOT VINDICTIVE and does not consign ANYONE to be hewers of wood and drawers of wood against their will. A proper perspective on the Bible would do away with most of what concerns you.

Have you ever wondered how you and I can be so much alike despite our differences with respect to Christianity? I am a proud descendant of an African tribe. I know not which because that was taken from me. I hope one day to discover my roots but in the meantime I appreciate and embrace my Africanness.

And here we shall cue the “learned” doctor who will mock me for being a Bible illiterate.

Bushie, don’t bother taking potshots at me and my Church either because we would be the first to admit that we are still learning about God. And we KNOW that we will never know it all. We have more questions than answers because God is so high above us. But it is the learning that is so intriguing!

  24. The average Bajan has a hard time investing without being robbed by the usual suspects…

what I want to know is how many Ernest Deighton Mottleys Barbados got, am sure the Ernest of the Mottley clan passed away sometime in the 70s, but apparently his name is still alive and well on every offshore account imaginable..

Piece…what a thing, they might have been able to hide one or two offshore accounts, but it is hard to hide anything among a large group of accounts, when you yaself got so many…lol

Dear Donna Africanus, as a ‘black Christian’ in the making here is the God you ought to turn to on Sundays for your salvation.

Once you attempt, in your childlike innocence, to unravel the mystery, then God will reveal itself (for God is neither man nor woman, black or white) then you would join the miller in Paradise:

    “The Lord bless you and keep you;
The Lord make His face shine upon you,
    And be gracious to you;
The Lord lift up His countenance upon you,
    And give you peace.”

  26. re The Bible is FLAWED because MEN WROTE IT!

THIS IS TOTAL RUBBISH SPOKEN BY A BIBLE ILLITERATE!

The bible clearly states who wrote it!–the Holy Spirit

    2 Peter 1 :20-21
Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation. For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.

“First of all you must understand this, that no prophecy of Scripture is a matter of one’s own interpretation, because no prophecy ever came by the impulse of man, but men moved by the Holy Spirit spoke from God.” This passage teaches that when you read Scripture, what you are reading does not merely come from a man but also from God. The Bible is the writing of many different men. But it is also far more than that. Yes, men spoke. They spoke with their own language and style. But Peter mentions two other dimensions of their speaking.

Speaking from God, Moved by the Holy Spirit

First, they spoke from God. What they have to say is not merely from their own limited perspective. They are not the origin of the truth they speak; they are the channel. The truth is God’s truth. Their meaning is God’s meaning.

Second, not only is what they spoke from God, but how they spoke it is controlled by the Holy Spirit. “Men, moved by the Holy Spirit, spoke from God.” God did not simply reveal truth to the writers of Scripture and then depart in hopes that they might communicate it accurately. Peter says that in the very communicating of it they were carried by the Holy Spirit. The making of the Bible was not left to merely human skills of communication; the Holy Spirit himself carried the process to completion.

Someone might say that 2 Peter 1:20–21 only has to do with prophecy not with all Old Testament Scripture. But look carefully how he argues. In verse 19 Peter says that a prophetic word has been made more sure to him by his experience with Jesus on the mount of transfiguration. Then in verses 20–21 he undergirds the authority of this prophetic word by saying it is part of Scripture. Verse 20: “No prophecy of scripture is a matter of one’s own interpretation.” Peter is not saying that only prophetic parts of Scripture are inspired by God. He is saying, We know the prophetic word is inspired precisely because it is a “prophecy of Scripture.” Peter’s assumption is that whatever stands in Scripture is from God, written by men who were carried along by the Holy Spirit.
His teaching is the same as Paul’s in 2 Timothy 3:16, “All scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness.” None of the Old Testament Scriptures came by the impulse of man. All of it is truth from God as men moved by the Holy Spirit spoke from God.

What About the New Testament Writings?

But what about the New Testament? Did the apostles and their close associates (Mark, Luke, James, Jude, and the writer to the Hebrews) experience divine inspiration as they wrote? Were they “carried” by the Holy Spirit to speak from God? The Christian church has always answered yes. Jesus said to his apostles in John 16:12–13, “I have yet many things to say to you but you cannot bear them now. When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you things that are to come.”

Then the apostle Paul confirms this when he says of his own apostolic teaching in 1 Corinthians 2:12–13, “We have received not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit which is from God, that we might understand the gifts bestowed on us by God. And we impart this in words not taught by human wisdom but taught by the Spirit.” In 2 Corinthians 13:3 he said that Christ speaks in him. And in Galatians 1:12 he said, “I did not receive [my gospel] from man nor was I taught it, but it came through a revelation of Jesus Christ.” If we take Paul as our model for what it meant to be an apostle of Christ, then it would be fair to say that the New Testament as well as the Old is not merely from man but also from God. The writers of the Old Testament and New Testament spoke as they were moved by the Holy Spirit.

The Holy Spirit Is the Divine Author of Scripture

The doctrine that emerges is this: The Holy Spirit is the divine author of all Scripture. If this doctrine is true, then the implications are so profound and far-reaching that every part of our lives should be affected.

  28. If you would take the time to read and comprehend you would see that I blame black people for not coming together to OVERCOME. This world is a jungle. I only point out whitey’s hunting techniques. It is up to us to out manoeuvre those techniques. But we are too busy wukking up.

You are making yourself look silly here so I’m going to help you a little. As I have stated many times in this forum – my definition of success, is not the same as yours. If I have not achieved what you prize it is because I NEVER SOUGHT TO ACHIEVE IT. The Borg has NEVER been able to assimilate me and they never will.

I sleep comfortably in the knowledge that I have taken steps to fulfill my purpose and that there are many young people who will attest to that. I made them THINK! I made them QUESTION. And we had GREAT FUN doing it. They still hug and kiss me when we meet. Their parents still hail me even from across the street. They will NEVER forget me. And I am not finished yet!

And here’s my latest achievement. I, a person who has never been able to suffer fools gladly, a genetically sharp-tongued, hot-tempered granddaughter of a foul-mouthed fisherman (who made sure to get his own boat) have managed not to respond to you in kind even though you stalk me all over BU. Feel free to continue. I need the practice. Soon I will be as cool as PLT.

And now – Where Does the Average Bajan Invest Today?

  29. Vincent Codrington Avatar

Just for the record , savings is the opposite side of investment.
The ordinary citizen saves through leaving excess balances in his bank account after paying for consumption goods and services. This residue is then redeployed in loans to the business sector or other consumers. The Banks act as intermediaries between savers and investors. To suggest that money saved in banks do not finance investments is misleading. If not wicked.
Many meaningful investments need large lump sums of money. The Banks and credit unions provide the service of collecting small savings, lump them together and convert them into large usable forms of investments.

Barbados has long passed the stage of a subsistence economy. Meaningful investment size should be in millions ,not thousands. So we are again making bare mock sport at Barbadians.
    @ Miller

The true entrepreneurs in this society will identify the investment opportunities and approach those institutions that can really assist them. There are many things in life that you cannot dictate. Economic growth and economic structures are two of them. The most that you can do,if you are GoB, is to create a climate of trust and social stability not stationarity.
