To the observer of the Barbados space post 2018 General Election, there has been non stop activity generated by the newly installed government of Barbados since taking the reins. There is an air of expectancy about what the Prime Minister will convey to citizens.

The unprecedented decision by the government to trigger a selective default has committed Barbadians to travel an uncharted path.

Many Barbadians although discomfited by the state of affairs that will for a long time prevent any reference to Barbados being a model country for others to emulate, appreciate that affirmative action must be taken.

The Barbados brand has received a huge dent!

We have travelled this road before maybe? Wasn’t it former PM Sir Erskine that opined- how did we get back here as a country?

  2. Still a lot cheaper than for Caribbean people to travel through the Caribbean, they pay double that from a 45 minute to 2 hour flight,.

Cheaper to fly to Canada and then fly to the Caribbean, or fly to NY and then fly to Caribbean…steupps

  3. @Hoodie

As the saying goes, talk is cheap. For the sake of country let us hope she is able to infuse confidence in a people who are feeling the fatigue of a country that has gone nowhere fast under the former government.

  4. @Hants June 11, 2018 5:11 PM

The tourists, international banks, creditors and the offshore financial sector will be very proud to finance a just wage hike for the most productive and leanest civil service on earth in Barbados. Holiday in Barbados is so cheap, they have no other option than to come back to Barbados.

We will all see that Credit Suisse and the IMF will beg Barbados to take their money.

    Make Barbados great again 😉

  5. Enuff,

Death of the high street is premature. Certainly death of the Independent, that is why it is an online publication only.
Poor analysis. Online is what we used to call buying from catalogues.

  6. @GP

But Dr.GP, old friend, we all know what the blogmaster meant when he made that statement about “not wanting to die but want to go to heaven”. Simply tongue firmly stuck in cheek. Just remember who was famous for using those words.

  7. There is a backlog of 10,000 criminal cases according to the PM, which must be addressed, but there is a backlog of multiple thousands, could very well be tens of thousands of civil cases as well, just as destructive to the judicial court process, hope her attorney general will be addressing those as well.

  8. Beautiful Beige yes we wanted a proper and decisive PM and we now have one like in the past with Mr Barrow,Mr Adams andMr Arthur. No more procrastinating and speaking only to Dems in George Street and overseas. This is how a PM leads from the front and already certain decisions have been taken having consulted with the various partners all round. As for Fractured J/A you should be ashamed to be on this blog after all the disrespect you showed to Ms Mottley, with your gutter behavior.I guess you regretting it now because look where it got your party outside looking in,including your ex PM.I guess all your tapes and bombshells blew up in your face moron, result 30-0 Redwash, think on these things, and get out the gutter.

Hush your mout!! In this global world, through university and other avenues, people are connected from all parts of the world. Hence I know that this is a position well known by researchers in London assessing the impact of online retail on High Streets/brick and mortar. It apparently is happening in other parts of the UK as well. I know a few people personally who live in London that undertake this type of assessment of London’s High Streets. In fact, the impact has been known for a while and has shaped policy in London for the past 3-4 years. BHS, House of Fraser and Banana Republic have closed in London. The latter has gone to a 100% online story.

  11. “Online is what we used to call catalogue.”
The sheer unmitigated gall of this man never ceases to amaze me. Catalogue and online don’t even compare, one is static the other is dynamic. So dynamic, that you can fill in your height, weight and age, and your correct size is chosen. You see now why online is Grim the Reaper for brick & mortar? Fossilised aren’t you?

We have said that we want to give the PM MAM a Chance; we do not want to be Part of the Resistance. We all love Barbados and want to see it succeed but you cannot overcome the Destitution of Socialism with MORE Socialism. Socialism ALWAYS FAILS. Some Less Spectacularly than Venezuela, it may take longer but it Will Fail. To come back from the Brink you have to employ your mind to find ways to Release the Innovative Entrepreneurial Spirit of your people.

I do not have the numbers of what it cost to Run the Ministry of Education in Barbados and how many Pupils they have in Primary and Secondary level in Education. Divide the Number spent in Education by the number of Students and that will give you what it cost to educate a Pupil. I am sure if you gave 25% Less Money per pupil you would get better educated people if it was in Private hands. The Government would get better results for ¾ of the money spent. They may even be able to Rent out the School Facilities to these same Private Educators. But under Socialism you have many Layers of Bureaucracy that would be non-existent under Private Enterprise.

This $5 Bus Fare that they keep Floating will Bury the Transport Board. But at $4 the Mini Bus Men will be Singing Praises all the way to the Bank because there is no Law that says they have to Charge the something as the TPB. Suggestion… Privatise the Darn Transport Board.

They are many more ideas out there to help Barbados if only the Blindfolds of Socialism were Removed. I do not think that Barbados is Ready for them yet…Maybe we have to Fail more Spectacularly before people’s Eyes are open. I Pray this is Not the Case and also Every night I pray that people’s Eyes will be opened Especially our Leaders

At time I wonder what world my former classmate Hal is living in. Is he really comparing the giants of the catalogues era like Sear Roebuck, JC Penny, etc to amazon? Here in the USA brick and mortar like Circuity City, Radio Shack, Sports Authority, Toys R Us are either gone or on their last legs. When online shopping started most transactions were tax free, but most states have introduced legislation which tax online sales in an efforts to recapture the sales tax lost from the decrease sales from brick and mortar.

Lorenzo…………I had to smile today reading the back page of the Nation……..a 95 year old and a 82 year old are the face of the DLP today one claiming that he wants to help with the rebuilding…..
    ……hahaha!

Leave the dems to wallow in the gutter at the pop down run down DLP headquarters at George Street. I cannot believe that a party which had access to millions of dollars in campaign finance and huge donations would end up now that they have been decimated with a run down headquarters.

Just like they run this country.

Fast forward to today…..I could not have been more proud of Mia Amor Mottley as I sat today in the House. We all have to do our part now to rebuild this country we love so much.

For what it is worth, to save money, I would have combine the two Tourism bodies back into one to help as the DLP divided the BTA to create a CEO position for a DLP big up’s daughter. I shall put this on the ideas email the PM said will be set up to share ideas.

Enuff, what can be done with this intellectual Neanderthal called Shallow Hal?

You are probably a ‘tad’ embarrassed to admit that he is a school associate of yours.

Please tell your school ‘mate’ Hal that it is not only the British High Street clothing retailers who have gone ‘ONLINE’ but also the major chain of supermarkets selling not only fresh (raw) and prepared foods and other ‘wet’ goods but also all kinds of ‘dry goods’ including clothing and every other consumer good under the ‘poor’ British Sun.

We are prepared to wager that the same Hal has done a bit of ‘Online’ shopping himself.

Let him deny that on many a lonely occasion- while his timesharing partner is away being ‘swindled’ to her hearts content- he has ordered too many a loneliness-filling pizza and other ‘Home Delivery’ meals direct to his ‘cold’ flat in N. London but not over the telephone but by way of an Online conversation with an ‘electronic’ robot.

  24. Perhaps Hal meant that when people did not want to go to a brick and mortar store they would look at catalogues and then order through the mail.

brick and mortar –> catalogue —-> mail
    brick and mortar—> online ——-> mail/USPS/UPS/Fedex

If this is the case, then there is truth in the statement,

IT has not only sought to give an impression that it has alleviated the taxes on the poor and vulnerable BUT THEN it has replaced those takes with new formats of more onerous taxes with prettier names

In some ways I am laughing as the constant devalued Barbados dollars are to my advantage seeing as I earn a lot of US$ overseas but saddened by how the local working poor continued to be screwed.

Not even a decent minimum wage, how can someone single or with a family live off BD$300 or US$150 per week with additional taxes there is no wonder that crime will go up as people will find a way to survive legally or illegally.

Would you encourage a person to write to ideas4barbados?

  42. GG’s Senator-designate accused of unprofessional conduct

    June 12, 2018

Following the announcement by Governor General Dame Sandra Mason that she intended to appoint this island’s Deputy High Commissioner to London Althea Wiggins as a senator, details have emerged of an ugly incident two years ago in which Wiggins was accused of cursing her boss in the full view of other members of staff at the London-based High Commission.

Barbados TODAY has obtained a copy of the incident report, as well as the detailed letter which was dispatched by High Commissioner Guy Hewitt to then Prime Minister Freundel Stuart and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade Maxine McClean.

In the report, Wiggins was accused of behaving “in an unprofessional, disrespectful and undignified manner” in the presence of junior staff following a staff meeting on February 8, 2016.

    https://i0.wp.com/barbadostoday.bb/wp-content/uploads/2018/06/Untitled-2-5.jpg?resize=650%2C318&ssl=1
    Althea Wiggins

The incident reportedly occurred in the reception area of the Barbados High Commission “in the presence of a number of junior staff”.

“You used abusive language which is alleged to have been directed towards me,” Hewitt said a February 12 report that was addressed to his deputy.

“Please note that given the nature and seriousness of this matter, I felt it necessary to notify the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade and request that she leads on the follow up.

“You are required within seven days to provide to the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade a written report of the alleged incident,” Hewitt also instructed.

Five days later a follow up letter was sent by the High Commissioner to his deputy in which he acknowledged her response dated February 17, 2016.

However, he sought to remind Wiggins of “the instruction that you submit by tomorrow a report on the matter to the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade”.

Hewitt subsequently wrote to the Prime Minister outlining his position on the matter.

“Aware of our role as diplomats and senior representatives of the Government of Barbados abroad, it gives me no pleasure to have to bring such a matter to you. All relevant correspondence is attached but please allow me to put this matter into context.

“Aware of the communications challenges that obtained in this Mission in the past, I have given priority to building Team Barbados UK. My efforts included initiating staff meetings for all staff – Mission, BTMI [Barbados Tourism Marketing Inc], Ships Registry and International Business – and also periodic management meetings among the senior staff. Occasions in summer and for Christmas for staff to come together were also arranged by me at the High Commissioner’s residence.

“I have sought to work closely with Ms Wiggins as I have sought to do with Ms [Cheryl] Carter, Ms [Francoise] Hendy and Capt [P J] Green as senior managers. However, I must admit that the Deputy High Commissioner has to date not seemed to settle into her role and complaints have been received from the diaspora including the Chairperson of the National Council of Barbadian Associations and the President of the DLP UK Branch,” Hewitt complained in his letter, adding that “I have had to advise the Deputy of the need to avoid getting drawn into disputes with other staff, especially junior members, and also formally caution some staff members against being drawn into matters with the deputy which could affect them and cause discord in the mission.

“In the 18 months that I have been in [the] post, I have repeatedly discussed with the deputy the need for her to develop and document a work programme, and to submit ongoing reports of her activities to me and to Minister McClean. To date, neither has been forthcoming.

“I need to indicate that I was required to intervene on the arrangements for the Town Hall Meeting during your visit after Permanent Secretary Welch advised that the Deputy, without reference either to Minister McClean or myself, sought to cancel the meeting due to apparent logistical challenges. I also had to advise the deputy that it would not be appropriate for her to plan to be away from the Mission during your visit.”

Hewitt also noted that Wiggins had categorically denied using abusive language on February 8, 2016. However, he said her position did not correlate with three written staff statements received on the matter. “Further, she also makes unsubstantiated allegations of ‘verbal abuse’ that she claims to have suffered by me and that I am apparently part of a ‘conspiracy’ against her. I refute these assertions,” Hewitt said in his letter to the Prime Minister in which he called for Stuart’s direct intervention in order for the matter to be satisfactorily resolved.

However, it was not immediately clear how Stuart reacted to the matter, even though both Wiggins and Hewitt have retained their positions with the London office.

When contacted today, McClean said she was not prepared to get into any such discussion.

And while Wiggins could not be reached for comment, Hewitt said he was “unable to verify or deny that such outrageous and unprofessional conduct took place at the Mission in London”.

He however advised that “if it had he would have had to refer the matter to the minister [McClean] for her urgent attention”.

Wiggins, for whom a constitutional amendment was made last week to facilitate her appointment in the Senate given that she has not been resident in Barbados over the past 12 months, is due to take up her position in the Upper Chamber by July.

  43. @Sargeant June 11, 2018 3:28 PM “In one of Arthur’s recent Press Conferences he said (and I am paraphrasing) that University education wasn’t meant to be free forever, it was a tool to elevate some of the working poor to achieve some of the benefits previously denied to them as they had little or no access to higher education. He said by and large the country had achieved that goal and people like him and many others don’t need the Gov’t to pay for their childrens’ education.

A Simple Response: But there are still working poor. And this is so in every country is it not? The poor we will have always with us. Former Prime Ministers do not need to have their children’s educations paid for by the taxpayer. True. and this is partly because we the taxpayers pay our former Prime Ministers such nice pensions that they can take care of business, even for their children born late in their parents lives. But how about those of us who had 2 or 3 or more children between the ages of 25 and 30. And those of us who also had children late in life, and are supporting children through university on our fairly modest pensions.

I want some “free education” to remain, so that the the current little sons and daughters of maids, labourers, service workers, can also aspire to the Prime Minister

I always wondered whether any members of the political class give any money at all to UWI, the same university from which so many of them received their free education.

Come on political class, you got yours for free. Now free up some of your large pensions and make a commitment to donate $10,000 per year from the day you retire from your well paid political job, to the day you die. That is just a bit more than $25 per day. J am sure that all ‘o wunna can afford it.

Cheaper that setting up an expansive bureaucracy to means test/humiliate the children of maids and gardeners and gas station attendants.
