Greater love has no man than this, that he lay down his life for his friends [country]” (John 15:13) – Fr. Augustine Vallooran VC

The unprecedented 30-0 victory by the Barbados Labour Party (BLP) at the polls on 24 May 2018 created a Constitutional crisis UNTIL St. Michael West M.P. solved the problem by agreeing to be Leader of the Opposition.

Events to date confirm that the decimation of the Democratic Labour Party (DLP) caught even the BLP leadership by surprise- tinkering with the Constitution – always a messy business – with a basket of pressing issues to confront from Day 1 is not what Prime Minister Mia Mottley has the appetite for at this time.

In the short term Atherley has made the sacrifice to cross the floor to assume the Leader of the Opposition role. His monthly salary will jump from 60K to 129K per annum but this is the smaller issue. He has averted the need for Mia to tangle with the issue of making deep amendments to the Constitution of Barbados at an early stage in her administration. Ask yourself, which member of parliament crosses the floor after one week of being elected without first declaring his grievances to his constituents and the wider public as a matter of courtesy?

Atherley’s decision to assume the Opposition role is obviously strategic. A ‘sympathetic’ leader of the Opposition in the House of Assembly opens up a pathway for Prime Minister Mia Mottley to attack governance issues, more importantly it removes the nettlesome issue of making significant amendments to the Constitution at an early period in her tenure.

The blogmaster is pleased that the citizens of Barbados have a front row seat to observe the fragility of the democracy we practice exposed. It should be a learning opportunity we grasp with both hands. A past US President Thomas Jefferson is credited with saying that “Eternal vigilance is the price of freedom”.  Now more than ever in our history if the democracy we practice is to work as envisaged by the framers of the Constitution, people and stakeholder participation will be critical. The level of apathy and disaffection by citizens is well documented on BU’s pages.

We need to participate in our government in ways we have not done up to now.  We hope Bishop Joseph will live up to the biblical meaning of his name.

FIRST ROMANS 13:1-2 Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers. For there is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained of God.

2 Whosoever therefore resisteth the power, resisteth the ordinance of God: and they that resist shall receive to themselves damnation.

GOD SELECTED THE BLP TO ADMINISTER THE AFFAIRS OF BARBADOS AT THIS TIME

  4. The Quakers proper name is “The Society of Friends”

It is a society of like minded individuals who call one another Friend because of how the word appears in the Bible.

It doesn’t mean there are no divisions, there are and were!!

I believe God made each of us individuals to individually exalt his name.

    That is each individual’s choice.

No Party or Established Church or Government can impose that on the individual.

    No Country can either.

So much blood has been shed because Individuals asserted their rights to choice and followed their consciences in the past.

Barbados exists because those who fled persecution founded it.

Barbados like America is founded by these individuals too.

The debate going on here about the necessity of an opposition in Parliament has its roots way back in time.

The politicians just do not understand.

30-0 is a freak and offends every sensibility.

There is an easy way to solve it … and move on!!

… and GP .. I am reading “The Faithful Baptist Witness” … thanks!!

You do not need to be a part of a group or tribe to cast a vote for the candidate who spent 5 years enriching your constituency, fixing your roads, providing the means for job creating in your neighborhoods, making sure your sewage system, education system and infrastructure are upgraded AND maintained….you do not have to be part of any group to recognize a candidate(s) who works on behalf of the people. .

Look how well that worked out on election night….the tribal and grievously misled ST. John people and others….had no choice but to use the reality of 60 years of neglect and finally were forced to do the right thing to help themselves.

These people humble as they arev… clearly saw that the pack mentality of tribalism and groupism will never work in their favor nor those of their future generations…if they continued with the party politocs, which should be banned… ..they paid to learn and finally woke up from their decades of disenfranchisement. ..

“Bishop Joe should be expelled from Parliament as being a lunatic.
I am sure being a lunatic disqualifies anyone from holding a seat in Parliament.
Whoever put him up to this must have their sanity questioned and be expelled too.
Maybe that is the way to get an opposition, expel a few and hold by-elections for the vacancies created.
    Naaah, all got to go!!”

That automatically eliminates you, Sir Raving John, from running in any elections to sit in Opposition to a MAM’s government.

Didn’t your favourite disciple Judas betray your friend Jesus as described in that plot of premeditated disloyalty arranged by Saytan and sanctioned by his opposite number Yahweh?

Let us by the stretch of your wildest imagination assume that new elections are called and a similar set of electoral results prevails in light of now knowing the true state of the economy, then what? Turn the Bajan electoral process into some zero-sum game?

Lord King Fumble bragged about his ability to create history. He has done exactly that!
Never underestimate a blithering idiot- through a stroke of national misadventure and in accordance with the Peter principle- finds himself at the apex of political folly fit only for a court of jesters entertained by a circus of political clowns.

Why not accept the announced ‘Divorce of Political Convenience’ to facilitate some form of governance in order to stave off the hovering threat of devaluation of your precious Mickey mouse dollar? For every day wasted in the wilderness of political uncertainty can only echo the tolling of the economic death knell for Barbados.

At least you would have a façade of opposition in the form of a PAC. A precedent has been set for any other sitting who becomes pissed off with the wicked witch in red to simply cross the floor without being branded a quisling.

The Constitution, as it stands, is in dire need of a serious overhaul starting with its incongruous layout and chronological inconsistencies.
Why not make-in any future Constitutional amendments- clear provisions for the recognition of political parties to be treated as legally entities to force their corporate registration and reporting responsibilities before they can conduct business with the electorate. That should warm the cockles of VOB Art Edwards’s (aka BAFPF) heart!

But for now, let that much needed makeover be an integral part in the move towards republicanism unless you want to see future ministers pledging allegiance to the Crown and His Majesty Charles or William.

So which “church” will be left as that ‘ONE’ Light in Barbados? Clearly not your Quaker Society of Foes!

Neither can it be the Anglicans! Unless you want to see a bifurcation (schism) similar to what took place under King Henry V111 and Pope Clement VII in Rome.

Rogers versus Gibson should make for a good duel to create such a split. The question is who would gain control of the glebe for future real estate sales.

Here is a solution to your church problem in Bim.

Those soldiers who fought and died in the great wars for their British kings and empire were themselves Christian soldiers who went to slaughter other Christian soldiers marching in the army of Opposition in Europe.

Since you are so knowledgeable on the Cenotaph can you spot any Quaker names as you are so fond of doing regarding the many place names like ‘Choyce’ & ‘Content’?

Didn’t the biggest liar in that defeated lying party, ‘Minister’ Stinkliar, say that his ultimate ambition or last title in his mortal bucket list was to become a man of the cloth aka minister of religion?

  32. Forget Joe Atherley………let us discuss the following misdeeds which were found out yesterday:

……..renewing a contract for Sandra Forde a few days ago for three years when the contract was not up for renewal until 2019

……..government owes NIS 483 million dollars

……..government owes the UWI over 200 million dollars

……a contract done by NCC which is due to be renewed in 2019 was renewed without a break clause until 2029…..THE LAWYER WHO DRAFTED THIS CONTRACT SHOULD BE DISBARRED……..this is high of deceit and thievery

……Cranston Browne’s contract was renewed a few days ago for three years

……the mini bus contracts…..I know of these contracts as a friend of mine approached me to borrow $4100 to one……when I did my research, the cost is $3100 so I dont know if the person selling them was making $1000 on each sale…..needless to say I turned down the person.

……. and dont forget all the corruption with the Mark Maloney deals…….these contracts must be challenged in courts.

    LOCK THE BASTARDS UP!

    ……

@John you are carrying on like the the 30-0 is the coming of the apocalypse…whether the result was 30-0 or 16-14 the reality is that all power goes to the govt. To change the constitution the min result needed is 20-10. The Opposition is only there to facilitate an “official opposing view” to government but in fact has very little “power”. Opposition can comprise certain committees e.g. the PAC….Note that within our system since political parties are not official recognized in parliament….you can have an opposing view and vote against certain bills and still sit on the government side….One must not forget that the Erskine Sandiford govt lost a no confidence motion when members sitting on the govt side voted to carry the motion. Like wise members sitting on the Opposition can vote to carry certain bills. So what Bishop Atherley is doing is not earth shattering, just a little ridiculous…Technically he can sit on opposition and still be a BEE. I dont think it will affect Prime Minister Mia Mottley attitude to him or to any other MP…..she took criticism from Owen, never responded, and still prevailed with the biggest ever mandate ever given to any PM of this country…

It’s going to very difficult to overturn or set aside such agreements.
What must be done is to fire the bastards and let the wait for payouts just like the thousands of citizens who have to wait for monies due from government.

Let them all wait for their lucre just like the now deceased Peter Scott and the guy from the NHC George what’s his name.

The senior civil servants, as chief accounting officers, need to give an account of their roles in these purposely-arranged dastardly acts of public maladministration.

Setting up a commission of enquiry might just be a waste of time and money with the only positive outcome being the naming and shaming of those DLP political bandits.
This can be accomplished by squeezing the balls and punching the ovaries of those senior public officers who carried out the orders of their bullying political masters in order to make them squeal.

Mia needs to focus on trying to mitigate the costs to taxpayers by using the special audit facilities of the BRA to investigate those private sector people in receipt of contracts.

Such audit trails might just lead to politicians in receipt of unexplained payments from these private sector bribers.

You might find also much undeclared incomes which must attract the attention of the BRA.

Let her start with Greenverbs Parris and his undeclared $3.3 million, and, in order to catch more tax cheats in the net, make a concomitant swoop on Gollop and friends to stop them in the act of covering up their thieving dirty lying tracks.

  41. Bishop Joe sees himself as the moral leader of Bdos

  42. So there is consensus that the Senate cannot be formed in the absence of a Leader of the Opposition.

Even the BLP accepts this as Reverend Joe’s action has shown

    30-0 cannot work.

Crossing the floor to an empty opposition bench at this stage is an admission that you do not know your own mind and will act to further the interests of the BLP regardless of the consequences.

Yesterday you ran as a candidate, got on platforms, espoused the party manifesto and gave the potential members of the opposition hell.

You distanced yourself from them for all to see.

    You called them names.

Today you are “sacrificing” yourself for your party to cross the floor to the opposition even although it doesn’t exist because you beat the shit out of it!!

Do you still believe in your Party’s manifesto?

You are in effect admitting that you are of unsound mind by your actions.

What is it that disqualifies a person from being an MP?

“(e) is a person certified to be insane or otherwise adjudged to be of unsound mind under any law in force in Barbados;”

    The choices are narrowing.

As they narrow we are watching the basic flaw of Party Politics unfold before our very eyes.

Most candidates do not have any core philosophy and are mere puppets of their Party hierarchy.

    They will do anything!!

Yesterday I accepted that “… they would have their right to cross the floor as Hammy Lal or Bowman did so the ONLY thing against the law if two or five actually crossed the floor to hive off that new party would be strict regulations against public suicide !”.

It’s political awesomeness of the type that historians and storytellers crow about in many books for the ages…absolutely stunning in its audacity.

Alas, as an indicator of the PM’s trending to integrity, transparency and judicious actions it is reprehensible!

Anyhow, it is what is is. Dun wid dat!

I have a few queries for your experienced self as a former senior govt executive…if you are so moved to educate foolish Bajans like myself.

Do you expect this administration to move to void the last minute contracts done by the DLP? Specifically can you advise if the ‘rules’ around these types of actions are set out as a guide only or rather if specific guidelines ‘prevent’ such actions?

Let me clarify: the business of govt must continue with crucial product services contracts and so on but surely personal services contracts like Gov of CB or other such do not need multiyear extensions weeks before a change of govt.

Of course as you know better than I do there are viable options to these contract extensions: The BLP can dismiss those contracted and challenge the doc in court, simply continue to pay the contracted manager after placing on leave until the contract expires or negotiate a suitable ‘severance’ payout.

So I wonder from you are there regs that preclude all this loose legal footwork or has every admin DONE the same nonsense over the years…and do you expect this admin to move to put definitive regs in place to prevent such a repeat?????

  48. @Bernard

The Barbados Constitution identifies a leader of the Opposition, by definition and commonsense, that person should be identified as being supported by the opposition bloc of vote in the 2018 general election? The context of the question is driven by the right ethical behaviour?

  49. The only sacrifice Rev. Joe made was at the altar of filthy lucre. I don’t understand why there is so much commotion about Rev. Joe’s decision it is all in line with his retirement plans remember the DLP at its onset in Gov’t accused him of some misdeeds when it came to financial irregularities. The BLP supporters should relax and take a valium, his decision is so much fluff on Mia’s shoulders. If the Gov’t fires the recipients of some of those contracts it may very well lose as in the cases of “Boozer” King and George Edghill, if it reaches the CCJ it is already batting 0 for whatever.

BTW are Ambassadors Miller and Mascoll counted as Gov’t Ministers?
