Open Letter to:

The Director, National Cultural Foundation
The Chief Labour Officer

Dear Sirs,

RE: Cane Piece to Cask: Stories from Nicholas Abbey

It is February and it is Black History month. It is the month when black people celebrate the little that we know of Africa, the persons who have paved the way for the rights that we enjoy today and the dignity of our people.

I was therefore horrified when I read an article which was carried in both local newspapers on the 8th of February, 2018. In Barbados Today the title was “From Canepiece to Cask” while in the Nation Newspaper the title was ‘Hard Life on Plantation.’ Both articles were with regards to a production of the Barbados Tourism Product Authority in association with the National Cultural Foundation. The production was entitled “Cane Piece to Cask: Stories from Nicholas Abbey.” In the production, several individuals are cast as slaves.

Quoting Barbados Today, the Director of the skit Allison Sealy Smith said the purpose of the re-enactment was “to tell the story of plantation life through the slave’s perspective.” It may have been cute because I was not there to see it but based on the debauchery recorded in the history books; this was nothing more than a distortion of the truth.

In 2016 one Elizabeth Dolson in Brazil had the same brilliant idea of using persons employed as slaves on a plantation in Brazil and it was a tourist attraction.

Just imagine that Barbados is re-opening the gates of hell to descend on us just as it did to our ancestors. Slavery was not pretty. That skit can never repaint it in another colour. It was cruelty to blacks beyond measure and stripped them of their dignity. The slaves were abused, tortured, ravished and worked to death from morning till night on the sugar plantations and lived under conditions not fit for human habitation.

How can we find the sorrowful plight of our ancestors entertaining? Something has to be fundamentally and psychologically wrong if we are going to parade our people under the word “slave” to get a tourist dollar. It is dehumanizing. The entire idea of this is so offensive. It is an affront to every black Barbadian. It was a painful part of our history and no one should be so insensitive as to try to bring it back to life. Some may wish to glory in that former heyday but it no longer has a place in modern Barbados as we are all equal under the law. There are no masters and no slaves.

What is bothersome about this skit is that apart from distorting history it is normalizing slavery and is repackaging it as culture. It is nothing more than labour exploitation disguised. If it is not halted now, it will take root and we may very well find ourselves in a situation similar to Brazil where persons are hired to act as slaves for their employment at a local plantation to the whims and fantasies of the tourist. Slavery was abolished by the Emancipation Act of 1834. It is therefore illegal for anyone to work as a slave; skit or otherwise in Barbados. Does the Chief Labour Officer know that persons were hired to play the roles as slaves?

I am therefore seeking to have the production halted and never again be enacted in Barbados. It is disturbing on so many levels.

Sincerely,

Heather Cole

Fraser and that other wannabe historian from the Bayland Karl something or the other….both need to be stopped in their tracks permanently from embellishing these stories concocted in their minds and telling lies re slavery Barbados….the former land of theft of labor, rapes, murder, fraud, lies and deceit against Africans and their descendants…

    Enough already.

It disgusts me to hear them both with their mouths filled with lies and not one scintilla of truth.

Both Fraser and Karl something or the other are very disrespectful to African descendants and their ancestors when they do this and Allison Sealy should know much better ….this is not the time to glamorize slavery to deceive the present youngest minds and future generations in the society.

Only token blacks would fall into that trap….next thing you know another four generations or more of African descent people will be deceived going forward that slavery was glorious for their ancestors when the two bottom feeders or others like Fraser and Karl something or the other…rewrites the island’s history..

…..those already long dead in their graves will not be around to refute those lies but the books of lies will still exist.

It is not like Black governments on the island pay attention to or stop these travesties against the majority population. ..they never have before…the population have to protest these frauds against themselves.

  3. One of the few times I agree with this author. I was taken aback when I saw the ‘slaves’ in the newspaper. I was like why are they doing this, for what? I toured the Abbey 2 years ago, it was OK without the re-enactments of the slave days.

  4. Which is worse Kevin, physical slavery, physical and mental slavery or both.

The period was painful enough for the slaves, our foreparents. Why the need to reconstruct it for their descendants?

@David, ANY form of slavery is noxious!

  6. Why does David like to troll me, lol. Anyways, I would say both have damaging effects.

  7. @Kevin

Some commenters seem to have this effect on the blogmaster. It is a rhetorical question which serves to make a bigger point Jeff- we rail against the slavery of the pre-emancipation period but fast forward to present and we meekly participate in a setup controlled by the same elite. The struggle continues.

  8. RE Just imagine that Barbados is re-opening the gates of hell to descend on us just as it did to our ancestors.

WHAT A LOAD OF EMOTIONAL HYPERBOLIC BULLSHIT!

ARE THE GATES OF HELL CLOSED?

CAN THE GATES OF HELL DESCEND? IF SO WHERE FROM?

HOW DID THE GATES OF HELL DESCEND ON OUR ANCESTORS?

How we tell history in schools need revamping

  19. I can’t comment on the presentation as I haven’t seen it or read a review however if it is in the form of a skit it wouldn’t receive a “thumbs up” from me. But, I disagree with the notion that painful experiences of our historical past shouldn’t be reenacted on stage or screen. It brings home a sense of realism that can never be experienced by reading a book. If others were of the opinion that such memories should be excised “Roots” would never have been made as well as the various Holocaust movies I am under no illusions as to the origin of “Gumboots” when I see the performers on stage. If there is any disagreement it should be that the authors of such works stick to accuracy and avoid any embellishments.

I can’t believe that we are so fragile that we can’t deal with reminders of life’s worst horrors even on an actor’s stage.

  22. @Sargeant

What you say has merit on the surface. Race issues in this neck of the woods given our colonial history provokes. We have to be sensitive to this matter because as you correctly opined, many a psyche is fragile when it comes to the emotional issue of race relations and reconciliation.

  26. Sarge,
    Exactly correct!

Watching Roots, 12 years, Jango etc makes one very aware of the realities of slavery–very sordid and despicable inhumanity. The UN et al should act immediately against the evils in Libya , Sudan etc!

It would be better to show the young, the stark, naked truth and let them form their own opinions about the last four hundred years…

THERE WAS A TIME MANY YEARS AGO I MADE A MISTAKE BETWEEN “THEREFORE” AND “THEREFOR” when on a visit to one of the contiguous islands I was reading material for a young lady, who worked in the High Court of her country, and who, because she was an accurate typist, would often get work on week ends typing stuff for legal luminaries there.

To facilitate her she would get me to read while she typed. Because at age 18, I had never seen the word “THEREFOR” before, I read it as “THEREFORE”. Later, she was very upset because she had to make several corrections.

If a non lawyer had written FOREPART, it would be ok. Why should I not reasonably wonder if FOREPART was A NEW ANATOMICAL TERM, about which I did not know, just as in 1972 when I thought out of ignorance that “THEREFOR” should be “THEREFORE”?

    “BLACK HISTORY MONTH”

Was slavery not part of black history. If you sweep unsavory history under the carpet, how are our future generations going to learn from our previous generation mistakes. If the author sweeps the Hitler Holocaust under the rug I’m sure several thousand JEWS are going to add you to their HIT LIST. History is history no matter what the context.

  33. @Wily

Are you saying you know for sure Jews enact the Holocaust in the theaters around Jerusalem these days?

  41. @ Sargeant, if you saw black smoke in the distance coming from the location of your house, would you not raise an alarm?

  42. @Seargant, Gorgie et al, my whole premise is to prevent this skit from becoming as established feature of the Sugar and Rum Season. As the Blog master rightly said The Jews remember the Holocaust but there will never be a skit reliving her experiences in the extermination camp every day. The sole intent here is to make money and not preserve our dignity. It makes a mockery of what slavery has done to us as a people and fools of the persons who were the slave actors.

  43. How can we find the sorrowful plight of our ancestors entertaining?
    ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

How come people can admit having watched Roots and enjoyed it when slavery was reenacted in it?

This article is as about as ridiculous as it gets!!

  44. …. isn’t there someone somewhere claiming Roots was a hoax?

  45. “Virtually every genealogical claim in Haley’s story was false,” Nobile has written. None of Haley’s early writing contains any reference to his mythic ancestor, “the African” named Kunta Kinte. Indeed, Haley’s later notes give his family name as “Kante,” not “Kinte.”

  46. The judge who presided over Haley’s plagiarism case admitted that “I did not want to destroy him” and so allowed him to settle quietly – even though, he acknowledged, Haley had repeatedly perjured himself in court.
