Grenville Phillips II, leader of Solutions Barbados

The Government needs tax revenue in order that we may all benefit from Government managed health, education, road maintenance, police, fire, and other services.  Therefore, we should all pay our taxes.  If we do not pay our taxes, then the Government must unfairly burden another group with additional taxes to make up the difference – this group is normally the middle-class.  The alternative is to restrict the provision of these services.

Those who refuse to pay taxes compete unfairly in Barbados’ economy, since they can offer their products at a lower cost than their tax-paying competitors.  In an attempt to reduce the unfairness in the system, the Government has insisted that tax-clearance certificates, which prove that all taxes have been paid, must be obtained in order to participate in certain sectors of Barbados’ economy.

The Minister of Finance must be commended for this attempt to ensure fairness in Barbados’ economy, because a fair economy facilitates economic growth, which can help to solve our now dire economic problems.  Since we can all benefit from a growing economy, I hope that the Ministry of Finance will seriously consider this improvement to his initiative.

Those who owe the Government taxes fall into one of two categories: those who have the money to pay, and those who do not.  The tax-clearance requirement is an appropriate response to those who have the capacity to pay, but choose not to.  However, this requirement can harm the national economy by closing highly competent and competitive businesses, who do not have the capacity to pay. The obvious question is: if they are so competent and competitive, why can’t they pay their taxes?  Let me try to explain.

A fair economy is one where everyone has an equal opportunity to participate.  This means that Government contracts are open to all Barbadian companies, and the winner is selected by competitive tender.  The national economy becomes corrupted when Government contracts are given to persons and companies who fund political campaigns.

There has always been a sub-set of Barbados’ economy called the ‘political economy’, which is reserved for persons who fund political campaigns and expect Government contracts in return.  It is generally understood by all experienced persons in the market-place, that a few ‘berries’ must be reserved for ‘the boys’. Once this corrupt political economy remains small, then its impact on the national economy is negligible.  However, there is a tipping point when the size of the political economy grows to negatively affect the national economy.

Barbados passed that tipping point decades ago.  The likely time was identified by Moody’s 2009 downgrade report as 20 years ago.  To be charitable, politicians may be oblivious to the damage that distributing these ‘berries’ has on the national economy.  Ironically, the damage that they are inflicting on the national economy today, will result in a future Government being unable to pay their lucrative lifetime pensions later.

Those who are given no-bid Government contracts do not need to attend to their professional development, unlike their competitors who must compete in the market-place.  Those shielded from competition tend to become the least competent, and the least likely to successfully compete in Barbados’ economy.  The damage to Barbados’ economy is measureable when these less competent companies provide substandard products (goods and services), which require unnecessarily frequent maintenance and premature replacement.

When the replacement work is given to another politically favoured company that is protected from competition, then the public may pay many times over for the same product.  Taxpayers generally hope to be unburdened from this inefficient wastage when the political party is finally voted out of Government.  However, such hopes are normally dashed when the incoming political party interprets their win as simply their turn at the trough.  Be assured that a Solutions Barbados administration will definitely not continue this practise.

When Government decides who wins in Barbados’ economy, it automatically decides who loses.  By repeatedly choosing the most incompetent companies as winners, and the most competent as losers, the Government does significant damage to the national economy that can take over a decade to repair.  For those entrusted to carefully manage our national economy, to treat it with such damaging recklessness is highly irresponsible.

Since Barbados’ economy is not fair and has become corrupted, it is entirely reasonable for the Government to demand tax-clearance certificates from those whom it has sheltered from competitors and given no-bid contracts.  However, many companies that the Government has declared to be losers simply cannot afford to pay the taxes owed, for the simple reason that the Government has limited their participation in the national economy.  It is unconscionable that the Government would now demand tax-clearance certificates from them.
The Government needs tax revenues, but it has corrupted Barbados’ economy to the point where it has been structurally damaged for the past 20 years.  Fortunately, the Government can easily make things right.

First, it can demand taxes from all of those whom it declared to be winners in Barbados’ economy.  Second, it can abolish the practice of handing no-bid contracts (or berries) to political supporters.  Third, it can declare a general forgiveness of all taxes owed to Government for those it has automatically declared to be losers.  Only then can the Minister of Finance reasonably demand tax-clearance certificates from everyone.

Artax, Enuff, Gabriel, Well Well and Vincent: You have revealed yourselves as BLP worshippers who cannot be reasoned with. So you can stop pretending to be non-partisan.

Dont forget that Grenville said that his people could not come forward because they had government contracts. Make no mistake these people are feeding at the dlp trough, so we cannot expect them to be critical of the hand that is feeding them.

A few weeks ago I read Corey Worrell’s column. When he wrote in an earlier column that he participated in the Fed Up march, I said…… man you are brave to admit that having said in an earlier post that he was out of work for a long time. Would you believe that a few days before the start of this new term, he was not allowed to return to the school he was assigned out of spite?

Without explanation …………..he said that the children really felt comfortable with him having had many teachers ………….and guess what……….the young man the Ministry replaced him with has never taught!

  3. Solutions Barbados

Most of the people on BU are fair and were prepared to listen to you and to give you a break but you seem to want to fight with anyone who does not share your world view. You deem them BLP supporters. Most people have voted for the DLP at some time.

You are so wrong sided that you would not lay blame at the feet of whom is to be blamed for the ills of this country…….that is what annoys us. In case you did not realise, the DLP has been the government since January 2008…………if the BLP made errors as you claim, they have had enough time to right the wrongs. Instead they have by their incomptence destroyed our fair land.

You need to get real…………you have lost votes because of your arrogance. Save your money because all of the candidates you bring will lose their deposits.

I think that Solutions Partys has put forth a reasonable argument and that the blame attributed to the BLP and DLP for where we are today cannot be refuted. Both parties are responsible for those particular entities in Barbados who have not paid their share of taxes for countless years. It is those same entities who believe that their contribution to the national landscape in the form of jobs creation, industry development, and whatever else they are responsible for creating, are reasons enough for the government to remain in the carefully crafted arrangement of exempting these organisations and companies from taxes. Both political parties are responsible for why many high flyers in Barbados do not pay taxes. Therefore, it comes as no surprise that any move to make one and all pay taxes is facing its ”unfair share” of problems.

  5. Grenville,

I think you have misinterpreted my views. For clarity: I think the Bajan should be decoupled from the Greenback and fixed to a basket of currencies and commodities.
On the question of debt of 40 per cent of GDP. You are simply wrong. All debt is not the same. The US has debt of US$2trn, over 100 per cent of GDP, and is still the most powerful economy in the world; it is that because the Greenback is the global reserve currency.
If debt is used to increase productivity, in other words for infrastructural development, then it is ‘good’ debt. A good example and one that this government should have done nine years ago is to introduce technology across the entire public sector. Had they done this there would have been an incredible increase in public sector productivity.
I have already mentioned bringing in bulldozers in the City and other slum areas and rebuilding.
This is not rocket science, it is precisely what Grantley Adams did with the Pine, Grazettes and other major housing areas, clearing the slums of the City which had started building up after the abolition of slavery.
It is what he did when he built Parkinson, Princess Margaret’s and St Joseph’s secondary schools, expanding secondary education. These were investments for the future.
But take it from me, any economist who claims that debt over 40 per cent f GDP is unsustainable not does not know what s/he is talking about, or has broken new ground in economic theory, or more likely has not properly learned anything about economic policy.

Artax, Enuff, Gabriel, Well Well and Vincent: You have revealed yourselves as BLP worshippers who cannot be reasoned with. So you can stop pretending to be non-partisan.”

Grenville…more the reason you should be vigorously defending the desperate need for anti corruption legislation for all governments going forward, the need for integrity legislation for government ministers, the need to upgrade the defamation, libel and slander laws so that government ministers, lawyers and business people cannot continue to misuse them to protect their criminality against the people…..that is the platform you should be running on instead of projecting that you would use the same antiquated and wicked laws afginst those who disagree with anything they deem going against their civil right.

Those libel, slander and defamation laws are determinate, were not written in stone and can be removed to engender a more liberal freedom of speech for media and the population. Instead of a population afraid to speak out to defend their rights.

In addition Grenville…..when I said Mia owes the people and island and that she should remove the parasitic Maloneys, Bizzys, Cows, Tempros, Bjerkhams etc who have lived off the backs of the back majority for decades and only provided low paying, barely liveable wages while sucking hundreds of millions of dollars in contracts, taxpayer’s money and the NIS pension fund…using weakminded government ministers….I certainly did not mean for Mia to be replacing that self serving criminal syndicate with the likes of Peter Harris and other well known parasites infecting and infesting the island’s landscape….who are not any different…therefore she owes the island to make sure this injustice and financial disenfranchisement to  present and future generations of bajans stops when she is elected..

You may be surprised to learn that Mia will be held to account even more vigorously, as every word she now says is being recorded for future reference, just like all the lies, deceit and empty promises made by this current government in their 2008, 2913 manifestos…was recirded and can be used to make sure they are never elected again.

Not everyone likes, cares for or are inclined to reduce themselves to political pimps for nuisance politicians who are mere bottom feeders.

I patiently await Mia being elected, because the new political parties are not quite ready.

Now you see why Bajans have the attitude that we do, to persons who spend many years in the cold of England.

First he says ‘Take it from him….’ a man whose claim to fame is to have been the token black in some British tabloid; …a man who has not been known to have created any successful institution, …..any new knowledge, ….any community influence of note, …BUT who feels qualified to prescribe against a well established maxim that calls on persons of VALUE to live WITHIN their means – and to seek improvements in their financial status by ‘the sweat of their brows’.

With respect to your article, would it be ‘going too far’ to have called for an international forensic investigation of governmental and public service corruption by an FBI, Mounted police and/or Scotland Yard team AND full prosecution of all guilty persons?
Would calls for prosecution of ALL persons found guilty of breaking the public trust have been deleted by your editor? …and even if so, would David(BU) have deleted it?

When you keep harping on how we can find ways to increase income – or cut expenses by ISO9001 management, you continue to miss the elephant in the room, …of incompetence and dishonesty …ands lack of wisdom.
No matter how much money you provide to a fool or a thief, it will NEVER be enuff to avoid disaster….. in fact, the more resources you give to a fool, the more trouble he gets himself into… as can CLEARLY be seen by our national budgets over the years and the positions and downgrades that we have found ourselves in…

Here is Fruendel being his usual deceitful self……while in other articles, Lowe, Estwick and Dumbvillle continue to be their fraudulent selves….the only solution is to remove them, only the people can do that,

“THE JOCKEY HAS become too heavy for the horse to bear, said Prime Minister Freundel Stuart last night as he painted a picture of the severe burden of the country’s expenses.

However, in his hour-long presentation, which began at 9 p.m. in the House of Assembly yesterday during the Budget Debate, he gave the assurance that under the ruling Democratic Labour Party the most vulnerable would be protected.

The 66-year-old leader said that since Independence in 1966 the state had been investing in the areas of health, education, housing, sanitation and employment for the people of Barbados. That period of entitlement, which came with spiralling expenditure, had come to an end and now began the period of responsibility, he stated.

“The state has found itself in a position where with spiralling expenditure in those years . . . and with dwindling revenue the jockey, it seems, has become too heavy for the horse and whenever the jockey becomes too heavy for the horse, the horse cannot compete effectively,” Stuart said. (AC)

  11. @ Prodigal

And Grenville Phillips II has clearly indicated that he is a DLP sympathizer.

On Tuesday night during VOB’s post Budget discussion David Ellis asked Phillips to give an assessment of the Budget. I was appalled to hear Phillips say he did not have a chance to listen to the presentation.

Since the Budget date was announced weeks ago, any SERIOUS political leader or the party’s spokesperson on economic issues would have made every effort to listen and represent the party’s perspective at any post Budget discussion.

Instead, Grenville Phillips II went on some IRRELEVANT RANT about the BLP not advancing policies because of their fear of a “snap election” similarly to 2013, PROVING to all and sundry he and SB were UNPREPARED for this important discussion. Ellis reminded Phillips that this was “shiite talk.”

Under these circumstances, Grenville Phillips II was clearly an EMBARRASSMENT to himself and SB.

Against the background of economists, the trade unions, manufacturers, special interest groups, ordinary Barbadians etc., saying the Budget measures would increase the cost of living, I heard Grenville Phillips II on VOB’s 12:30pm news saying Sinckler was “refreshingly honest,” but went on to give an analysis of Mottley’s response.

Ironically, Grenville Phillips II boasts that SB is made up of business men & women. This was the perfect opportunity for him to bring his candidates together to give their perspective on how the Budget measures, especially the increase in taxes, would affect their businesses and employees (as the business community said it would) or refute their claims. But he preferred to talk about Mia Mottley.

I asked Grenville Phillips II rather than APPORTION blame for Barbados’ “economic ills” to a SPECIFIC political party, he should PRESENT SOME MEASURE of BALANCE to the discussion. And the IMMATURE POLITICAL JOKER accused me of being a “BLP worshiper.”

I would rather be a “BLP or DLP worshiper” than a Solutions Barbados worshiper, because Grenville Phillips II has proven he is an IMMATURE POLITICAL JOKER leading an UNPREPARED political party.

  12. Artax
Grenville Phillips is no leader. He ought to stick to what he is qualified to practice. He gives one no comfort in his ravings and rantings against one political party while giving a passing grade to the other. Why does he not offer his political services to the DLP?This is one confused individual and SB is on the road to lose its candidates’ deposits.

Grenville blew up his own political ambitions by refusing to run on a campaign that exposes, investigates and incarcerate corrupt government ministers, introduce integrity and transparency legislations FOR REAL.., unlike the lies told to voters in 2008 by Thompson and again by Fruendel in 2013 that never materialized….and protect the population from future misuse and abuse of their money.

And……dismantle the current libel, defamation and slander legislations currently used by politicians, government ministers, lawyers and business people to cover up their crimes against the majority population…..the very same legislation Grenville is complaining can be used against him, if he dares open his mouth to expose corrupt practices and call the names of those ministers and private sector business people, now engaged in a cover up of thefts of taxpayer’s and pensioner’s money.

That is what happenes when the real issues negatively

impacting the people and country are ignored.

  15. re your 7:13 AM @Artax, I can only do a Vincent and chuckle at your recent posts… Grenville Phillips of SB showed himself to be a ‘immature political’ aspirant many, many months ago.

Mr Phillips scripted his solutions and placed them here for comment. After many meaningful rebuttals to his policy proposals the author made no noticeable changes and would repeatedly assert the same mantra that his solutions were solid. Arrogance or political immaturity.

Phillips discussed issues with bloggers and if they strongly disavowed his policies he would automatically lambaste their backsides with strong retorts like ‘sex addict’, ‘other party supporter’, ‘paid troll’ etc. Arrogance or political immaturity.

And to the point you have made repeatedly. Phillips advised recently that he planned to announce new candidates this week. The same week in which the Budget spectacle was previously planned. Arrogance or political immaturity.

And yet he never got his team together to be ready for the standard public after Budget pow-wow. Once again arrogance or political maturity.

But, strong leaders are fundamentally cut of the same cloth… arrogant/confident, not easily moved and ready to take on all-comers. What sets them apart is their morality.

So realistically just another petulant, own-wayish leader but most important one who has a strong moral compass pointed at true north.

There will be no compass swings to corrupt inducements at every point east, west and south… one EXPECTS!

On that basis he and his team are still better than what we have.

Grenville Phillips is a piss-poor politician but frankly he can’t eff-up the country any worst that what has been done already and likely will be done under a BLP regime.

In a land of very crooked, experienced politicians those that are honest, naive and immature are yet optimal…the civil service runs the show anyhow!

It is interesting to note that NONE of the INDIVIDUALS Grenville Phillips II INTRODUCED as CANDIDATES for Solutions Barbados, has made any comments on the myriad of social and economic issues confronting Barbados.

  18. Prodigal:

Many on BU are fair, and have pushed me to improve my ideas, and to them I am very grateful. Some have pushed my politely and some have pushed my rudely, but I am not thin skinned. You cannot survive over 2 decades in the construction industry with a thin skin – it is impossible.

For the uninitiated, every calculation that I do must be 100% correct – 99% can cause mass casualties. Further, Engineers are personally liable for any quantifiable damage that results from persons following their advice – and the costs are likely to be very high (since I normally work on large projects). Therefore, in accepting this liability, I learnt very early in my career to welcome and analyse any criticism regardless of how it is delivered – and it does not have to be constructive.

That is why I am part of the BU community, albeit, more as a target. I welcome all criticism, even the rude ones. You can see my past responses over the past decade for verification. However, the responses to my last article about sex slavery crossed a line.

I welcome being the target of criticism, but to have absolutely no compassion for children being repeatedly raped around the world in the sex trade, and want to maintain such slavery because you think that our children should be allowed to view these acts on their smart phones so that your access to these images is not restricted simply crossed the line with me.

When you have absolutely no compassion for such victims, and absolutely no concern about the damage that viewing such acts will have on our primary school age children, then you have a grave addiction, and I simply called out those people. Do not expect me to condone or encourage you in that type of addiction. If the cap fits, then go and seek help in taking it off.

On partisanship. I expect people to be partisan. I am happy to engage with partisan supporters. However, after a decade, it is time to help people be better. So, I will not be tolerating insults from adults who should know better. Why would an adult use such infantile language? There are 2 likely reasons. Either they are paid to troll anyone who they think is a threat to their party, or they fear a threat if they do not do what they have been ordered. I am simply calling them out. If you want to hide in the shadows and simply throw insults, then proceed if you must. I will not throw them back at you, but I will call you out of the darkness.

    Best regards,
    Grenville

  19. Sunny: Your comments are always appreciated.

  20. Hal:

Please re-read your article. There is not a single insult. Well done. Now to your salient point. If the IMF set a standard, and the IMF is whom we will be forced to go to as a lender of last resort, and the IMF will insist that we follow their prescribed method if we want their assistance, then it does not matter how wrong and misguided you think their standards and policies are, you will have to suck their salt – period.

Have we learned nothing from Guyana’s experience. They were as critical of the IMF’s standard and policies are you are, perhaps moreso. However, they still had to such the IMF’s salt.

On your point of the quantum of debt. Please do not use the US as an example, like former Gov Worrell. The US’ debts are in US currency; therefore, if China wanted to call in their debt, then the US simply has to print the trillions owed. We cannot do that with our foreign debts, and our foreign creditors will not accept Barbados dollars.

On your point of the use of the debt. If you build the best infrastructure to allow the private sector to operate productively, but you rack up an unsustainable amount of debt which you cannot repay, then you still have to suck the salt. The IMF noted that once you have crossed the 40% GDP tipping point, your debts are unsustainable, therefore pull back. Well, it seems that the BLP took your advice, improved Barbados’ infrastructure, and took us from the safety of 30% GDP debt to an unsustainable and reckless 90%.

I do not remember you cheering the BLP on during that period. So what happened? Remember, let us discuss this like the adults we are – no more insults.

    Best regards,
    Grenville

  21. Well Well:

Please re-read your previous post – not one insult. I am impressed. But you have done this before and then fell off the wagon, so I will keep my expectations low.

If you read our policies, then you will note that we plan to end the Parliamentary Privilege that allows politicians in Parliament to accuse each-other and private sector individuals without consequences. Parliamentarians will be forced to improve their presentations, so that our secondary school students can see them as exemplary models.

The Defamation act has a loophole for the guilty. Even if you have incontrovertible video, audio, photographic, and original documentary evidence to prove wrongdoing, you can be charged with Defamation if you reveal it. That needs to be corrected so that truth is actually a defence.

Finally, on the question of consequences. The BLP and the DLP have accused the other of corruption at every election cycle. They wave what they deem incontrovertible evidence in parliament, on election platforms, and before the media. However, never once has any of this evidence been taken to the police of DPP for evaluation – not once. Based on this history, what makes you think that anything will be different if the BLP gets in? Please give me you honest answer.

    Best regards,
    Grenville

  22. Bush:

We can go that route – even as part of our proposal. However, we think that our proposed policy of a 3-month amnesty where both the givers and receivers of bribes can pay confidential fines (of the full value of the bribe), followed by whistle-blower legislation where the penalty is increased to 10 times the value of the bribe and a public conviction, will be more effective. It is also automatic and uses less resources.

As part of the amnesty, the giver and receiver have to reveal the other guilty party. Here is where we can use the FBI and Scotland Yard etc. However, I do not think that we will need to. A simple visit by the Police should be sufficient. Otherwise, additional accounting resources will be transferred to the Auditor General’s office to investigate the evidence. Once we have secured one public conviction, the process should run with less resources.

    Best regards,
    Grenville

  23. Artax:

I know you. Your pseudo-name, writing style, and lying about your qualification exposed you. Your refusal to be critical of the worst BLP policies confirmed it. You would never be so insulting to any person to their face. But here, in the shadows of anonymity, you release these insults as if it were natural. It is not natural for you.

You are not a paid troll. Therefore, why do it. The only logical answer is that they have threatened you, because you have too much public and personal integrity to behave this way willingly. Leave the dark side. You can remain a BLP supporter, but leave the dark side of infantile insults. Now onto your salient point – which is a useful point and a fair criticism, but tainted with insults that does not befit a man of your stature, experience or profession, so stop doing all three a disservice.

I am giving this detailed reply out of a respect for you – not your insults. I planned to be at home listening to the budget; however, work happened. I had an emergency on a jobsite in St Andrew, which resulted in unplanned meetings with MTW and the BWA. Then a site meeting with the surveyor to sort out the problem. You may contact me for the names of the individuals if you wish to verify any of this.

I was not able to listen to the start of the presentation. However, one of our candidates took copious notes and made useful comments. Then I received the full text of the presentation, and was reading this when I received a text from Starcom about providing a reply in a few minutes at 8:00 pm. I explained that I was reading the presentation but would happily provide a response – since I had already read our candidates’ notes.

They called me at 8:30 pm and had me on hold. When I did get on at around 9:10 pm, I had read about 75% of the text and I disclosed that. However, after speaking for less than 1 minute, I was cut off and that was the end of that.

I then received an e-mail from the Nation requesting a comment. I wrote what I had prepared to say, and actually started to say on Starcom before I was cut off. I distributed it to all 20 of our candidates for their review and comment, and then after modification, I sent it to the Nation. It is reproduced below for your information.

    Budget Response

Solutions Barbados found the budget to be a refreshingly honest description of the state of Barbados’ economy and many of the economic problems that Barbados faces. It was almost like a death-bed confession in its honesty and hope.

The Minister of Finance repeatedly called for Barbadians to put Barbados first and work with the Government. However, the Government can either facilitate this cooperation or continue the distrust.

The Opposition has explained that the only reason why they are not sharing their solutions with the Government is their fear of a snap election. Therefore, the only way that the Government can facilitate this cooperation that they are requesting is to announce the date of the next General Election. This would allow the Opposition to work with the Government up to about 1 month before the date of the General Election.

[Note: It was here that David Ellis challenged this statement, and I reminded him that it was on Brass Tacks that Clyde Mascoll advanced this reasonable argument for the BLP’s non-cooperation. Please note that I agree with the BLP on this point. I was not critical of the BLP but the DLP, but I got cut off at this juncture.]

If the Prime Minister does not provide the date of the next General Election with dispatch, then we can assume that the Minister’s call for the public to put Barbados first was just another political statement. Our main concerns with the budget follows.

1 : The Minister’s dismissal of public sector mismanagement and wastage concerns was concerning. Opposition parties (including the DLP) regularly accused the Government of mismanagement. The spending budget consists of the amount to pay for efficiently provided products (goods and services), plus the additional costs to pay for inefficiency and wastage.

To significantly reduce the national inefficiency and wastage costs, all Government departments should be managed in accordance with the ISO 9001 quality management standard. Why the Government is resisting this simple but highly effective and economical solution is mysterious.

2 : The Minister announced that it is time to make sacrifices. The question that begs an answer is: what have we been doing for the past 7 years? Perhaps he was referring exclusively to campaign contributors who have not needed to make any sacrifices in the past.

3 : The Minister of Finance noted that incentives were to be written to encourage new home ownership. However he should also publish initiatives to help existing owners maintain their mortgages.

4 : Rather than propose an honest discussion of the private sector’s proposals, these proposals were ridiculed and rejected, while noting that consultations would be scheduled – that is not putting Barbados first, but a ‘muddying’ of the proverbial waters.

5 : Our principal problem with the Budget is in its pursuit of higher taxes to increase revenues. The Minister noted that we should learn from those who went before. Yet he appears oblivious to the fact that his is a proven failed approach. Further, lowering taxes is a proven method of increasing revenues in Barbados. Why won’t he learn from those who went before him?

Up to yesterday, the Nation did not publish our reply. Then I received a call from Starcom yesterday morning requesting a comment on the Budget and the Opposition’s response. I read the above verbatim, and then briefly noted our concerns with the BLP’s proposals. They were reasonable, but how were they going to be paid for.

I noted the BLP’s inexperience in dealing with an unstable economy, since they normally found it stable, when loans were relatively easier to access, and then proceeded to drown Barbados in debt. I also reiterated that if the DLP wanted the BLP’s cooperation, then they needed to put Barbados first and announce the date of the next General Election. In addition to the interview, I also sent our response to Starcom via e-mail.

I have no say on when Starcom chooses to cut me off, or edit my interviews. Further, as we both know, it is a waste of time complaining about such things because they have the microphone. Now, do you think that I was too lenient on the DLP or the BLP, or did I give an honest non-partisan assessment of both.

    Best regards,

After listening to OSAs presentation last night as to the dire straits this country finds its self in with a defacto devaluation,a 9 month austerity programme to raise close to 500m with no benefits to be derived from it as opposed to one that was on offer last year of an austerity measure of 300m over 3 years with all debts being settled.

What I would like to see is the private sector and the unions coming together and giving this govt an ultimatum to either go to the IMF or call elections……failing which they will undertake to shut the country down.

We have gone past parties as all are from the same hen…..only civil society can ensure proper management of the country.

  25. Grenville,

Are you accusing me of insulting people. Are you crazy. I am not Well, Well, whoever he is. I think I am a bit more civilised than that. A difference of opinion is not an insult, nor is refusing to tolerate nonsense, that is why I am not seeking elective office.
This is not meant as an insult, but if you think the IMF is the arbiter of good economic ideas and policy, so be it. But I am not prepared to debate the issue any more. It is wrong and bad economics. All debt is not bad debt.
That is why Brettons Woods organisations were created, that is why the Marshall Plan and more recently, post 2008 global economic policy.
I know some people may find this view unacceptable, but I am not prepare to compromise on my knowledge so that some people may feel comfortable about their ignorance. They are free to be as rude as they like.
It is a general problem with public intellectuals in Barbados, recycling ideas rather than analysing issues for themselves.
So that you have no doubt, all debt is not bad, and debt for investments in future productivity are good debts.
By the way, I think people debating in the shadows lack overall principles.

Grenville….are you trying to provoke me.

Mia said Scotland Yard, FBI, and in my opinion the outside agencies investigating government corruption is the best and only plan….. it has to be an aggressive, organized, unbiased and professional investigation leading to prosecution………the DPP is currently owned by government ministers and business people, the most corrupt element,  it will make no sense having an internal investigation re you have government ministers from both political parties who are friends with each other, god parents to each other’s children, business partners and who have all for decades colluded with a minority of crooks to steal money from taxpayer’s and the pension fund…..just ask the Auditor General.

I believe you wrote an article stating categorically that politicians are unable to grade themselves  so hiw are you exoecting them to police themselves and each others.

Besides your Cloud La-la and Cloud Cuckoo plan to address corruption is crap…..totally ineffective if you cannot send a message or the fear of the divine into those seasoned criminals with millionaire, mercedes and big house mentalities……..ya think ya dealing with sunday schoolers or what.

See Grenville…this just proves my point, there is no reason fir Mia to leave tge cover of parliamentary privilege but the shady character Gollop is challenging her to do so while Fruendel is defending his friend just like he defended Leroy Parris stealing Clico policyholders money and Michael Carrington stealing from a wheelchair bound client.

If Mia is serious she will out all of them, have them investigated, change all the ass covering legislation that helps them commit crimes and lock up the whole of them….to cleanse her own soul and gain a measure of trust from the people.

Prominent Queen’s Counsel Hal Gollop Friday issued an open challenge to Opposition Leader Mottley to shed the protective cloak of Parliament and to come outside and repeat the same scurrilous allegations she made against him this week in the House of Assembly.

While echoing the views expressed by his dear friend and legal ally Prime Minister Freundel Stuart last night, Gollop Friday spoke out in his own defence, after Mottley, under the cover of Parliament, brought the character of the Chairman of the local Employment Rights Tribunal into serious question.

While charging that exorbitant fees in the amount of $1.5 million were paid by the Stuart-led administration in relation to projects at the Barbados Water Authority (BWA), Mottley effectively cast a wide net, in which both Gollop and Stuart were entangled, as she promised to uncover and root out corruption in both high and low places.”

Although he shouldn’t piss her off too much or he may be the second vanderbuilt killed by a ho.
She is the best thing that has happened to trump he looks sympathetic , the left know now there are limits and getting the ambulance chasing alreds on board as her council certainly has made me laugh for the first time

There is no shortage of people wanting to work for trump they know they will be employed for another 7 1/2 years at a minimum.

Dear lawson: If you are good you do not need a guarantee of employment.

If ya good ya can walk offa one job and right into the next.

And tobesides what kinda idiots accept guarantees from an old, old man. Very likely Trump will be dead, dead, dead long before 7 years has passed. And not because me or anybody else kill him. He will be dead from his old age and his affluence.

If you are young and bright there is no need to hitch your wagon to Trump’s stumbling old horse.

And the thieves of government are brazen and shameful.

Police have been called in at this island’s central revenue collection authority following reports that thousands of dollars have gone missing.

Barbados TODAY was unable to confirm the precise amount. However, late Friday evening lawmen confirmed that they had arrested and formally charged a female employee of the Barbados Revenue Authority (BRA) with two theft-related offences.

Karla Cherese Morris, 33, of Mount Friendship, St Michael is accused of stealing money belonging to the Crown on May 15 this year.

She has been formally charged with theft of money and falsifying an account, and is expected to appear in the District ‘A’ Magistrates’ Court Saturday in connection with the offences.

Barbados TODAY understands that the administrative assistant, who was recently on sick leave, was reportedly nabbed from a plane and taken in by police for questioning over the missing funds.

In a brief statement Friday evening on the matter, BRA said that in the execution of its internal audit function it discovered a number of “anomalous transactions which appeared to indicate fraudulent activity.

“As is required by the governing legislation of the Financial Management Audit Act Cap 5., the Authority reported the incident to the Financial Investigations Unit of the Royal Barbados Police Force.

“The incident has now become a matter under investigation by the police, therefore the Authority is unable to comment any further,” the brief statement added.”

Angela Skeete is such an ignorant DLP yardfowl.

Why does Motley have to show her LEC when none other than the Adriel Brathwaite promised Barbadians almost two years ago that he would use the office of the Attorney General to investigate whether or not Mottley is indeed qualified to legitimately practice law in Barbados.

So far he has not revealed the results of his investigations to the public, and he is the AG.

So tell me Angela uglicia Skeets, whose integrity comes into question, that of AG Brathwaite or Mottley?

Sensible Barbadians will obviously choose Brathwaite because he has failed to discredit Mottley, and despite all the LEC talk coming from the DLP and their yard fowls, none of them have succeeded in preventing Mottley from practicing law in Barbados.

If Angela Skeete is adamant about Mottley’s ineligibility to practice law, why don’t she or Carson C. Cadogan, or any other DLP lawyer act similarly to Commisiong and use the legal system to file an injunction in court to prevent her from practicing law, until she proves beyond reasonable doubt she is a qualified lawyer.

If not then Skeete or ac should stop with the LEC shyte. It is showing you up as just another silly political yard fowl.

  43. SS are you sure you are from this planet let alone a bajan, it doesnt matter how smart you are how good you are or how young you are. Have you never wondered why there are very few ugly out of shape tv broadcasters as compared to radio hosts, did you think that aaron spelling hired tori spelling because she was talented lol
Liberals are so focused on trump just like the magicians moving hand that you dont see that it is the other one that is working behind the scenes and you stand there dumb founded when the trick ends wondering how he did that. Whether trump is in alive or dead does not matter they have already started sawing the chick in half and whether he finishes it or pence does in the end everyone will be clapping.

  44. I was told long, long ago by a an Inland Revenue/BRA insider NEVER to pay by cash. That I should ALWAYS pay be crossed check, and that on arriving home I should ALWAYS check online to ensure that the money has been credited to my account, and that furthermore I should NEVER throw away my Inland Revenue/BRA receipts, that the hands of some of the people who work there, have worked there are not/were not clean. I am probably one of the few Bajans who have neatly filed more that 40 years worth of Inland Revenue/BRA receipts.

Long before CLICO went bust I was told by a CLICO insider NOT to invest in CLICO. I did not lose any money in CLICO, but I believe that even the Prime Minister who is far better educated than I am and who is also a good friend of a CLICO insider lost money in CLICO. So what does that tell you lol!!

Good advice. And these advices came from clerical people, not from high faluting executive/management types.

I think that we have forgotten that Barrow rightly called us a nation of thieves.

They shoulda le’ she go to Miami and if she made a false declaration that she had less than $10,000 USD in money or monetary instruments on her, let the Americans deal wid she. Them Americans don’t play. And they wouldda confiscate we tax money too (and use it to help pay for Trump’s wall which is envisaged to keep out people just like she) No Bajan folishness of paying back the money and pretending that nothing din’ happen.
