TPP1With the stroke of a pen, newly inaugurated United States president, Donald J. Trump, today made good on one of his least controversial campaign promises; withdrawing his country from the 12-country Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) agreement via an executive order. The Agreement, which was signed by the US and eleven other Pacific-rim participants in […]

  4. McCain Says a Loud No to Trump withdrawal for further negotiations on the TPP

“President Trump’s decision to formally withdraw from the Trans-Pacific Partnership is a serious mistake that will have lasting consequences for America’s economy and our strategic position in the Asia-Pacific region,” he said. “This decision will forfeit the opportunity to promote American exports, reduce trade barriers, open new markets, and protect American invention and innovation. It will create an opening for China to rewrite the economic rules of the road at the expense of American workers. And it will send a troubling signal of American disengagement in the Asia-Pacific region at a time we can least afford it.
“Abandoning TPP is the wrong decision,” he continued. “Moving forward, it is imperative that America advances a positive trade agenda in the Asia-Pacific that will keep American workers and companies competitive in one of the most economically vibrant and fastest-growing regions in the world.”

  5. Trump has spoken ( on TV, at Rally’s, and to the Press), and has tweeted more in a year and a half. Has signed more executive orders in a day, and half than Fumble Stuart has done in his lifetime…

I am glad that the TPP is dead; it served only the interests of the multinational corporations who were in on the secret negotiations.

However, tossing it out will not save or create a single American job. The whole point of TPP for the USA was to bleed jobs away from China to Vietnam, Malaysia & Singapore.

That TPP was going nowhere, it was never ratified and just a soft target for Trump to pretend he did something today, he knows how sane, intelligent people feel about him so let’s see him take on Iran and North Korea..lol

  9. If Alicia would only stop writing “inter alia” all the time, her published notes would be nicer to read.

“Inter alia” is one of those useless rhetorical affectations inherited from our colonial masters. It does not add value, Alicia.

Umm, I’m not quite sure how to put this, but the entire English language is a “rhetorical affectations inherited from our colonial masters.” Throwing in a seasoning of a pre colonial dead language doesn’t make much of a difference. We each have to make the language our own.

  12. TPP was part of Obama’s “soft” pivot to Asia to take on the Chinese.

But it gave multinational corporations legal standing to sue governments in ways that would probably have forced the relaxation of environmental regulations and required the use of taxpayer funds to compensate some corporate shareholders.

China was excluded because the US was going to use TPP to eventually force trade concessions from China. At this point, I’m not sure how bilateral treaties will work differently as an alternative.

  13. @ac “The global opinion of Trump is that he is a madman Race horse did you see the three million woman and some men who came out in full force on the street to waged a peaceful uprising against Trump policies on Saturday”.

Well first the global financial community has downgraded Barbados more under Fumble an idoit lawyer. Secondly, three million out of 330 million that included Mexico, etc that that won’t protest their own government, stand up to the drug cartel, and live on US Social Security.

Do you really Ashley Judd, Gloria Steinem, and Madonna are roll models.

  14. @ WW&C

First, Trump has been constantly using the term “false news,” and now his lying hack, Kellyanne Conway, is saying Spicer relied on “alternative facts.”

Perhaps Trump based his election campaign on his on-going campaign to have “Central Park Five” executed for a crime DNA evidence proved they did not commit.

Recall in 1989, a Central Park jogger was severely beaten and four African-American youth and a Latino were charged for the crime.

On May 1, 1989, Trump “reportedly paid US$85,000 for full page ads in four of New York’s major newspapers, including The New York Times,” entitled: “Bring back the death penalty. Bring back our police!” [sounds familiar WW&C ?]

Trump also wrote: “I want to hate these muggers and murderers. They should be forced to suffer and, when they kill, they should be executed for their crimes.”

As recent as October 2016, Trump was still raging a war against the five men, using his alarmist racist and hyperbolic rhetoric in an attempt to sway people into believing the “Central Park Five” were guilty, even against the background of DNA evidence indicating their innocence and the confession of the actual rapist.

  15. Trump keeps going on about fake news, he is on expert on fakes, for this Linda McMahon has a place in his Cabinet.

    Kakistocracy in place.

The world Economy is very much in flux. As a very small country we must keep ourselves informed and equip ourselves to exploit opportunities when they arise, and use our skills to mitigate and eliminate outside threats to our survival. And it must be a joint national effort.

  20. Trump economic policies is an overloaded train heading for disaster driven by a captain with no navigational skills resulting in high inflation! high defecits ! massive layoffs driven by Union demands for increase wages and protection of workers rights involving enviromental issues.high fuel and energy cost due in part to increase in manufacturing! and definetly higher increase to consumer cost spending resulting at some point and time to a deprciation of inventory and slow productivity in the manufacturing industry
This mad man is doing all he can to wreck world economies
Yesterday was a telling moment when he tried to involve leading trade Unions in the nut and bolts of his policies knowning full well that the Unions would baulked at any notion of undermining the workers right in order to protect big corporations bottom line

  21. Bernard Codrington. January 24, 2017 at 10:02 AM #

A true statement….how do we mobilise a joint national effort…….that is the billion dollar question……..the political class that are presently our leaders, have to talk to us about how they see the the new world order and articulate the path that we should take to be part of it.

  22. The belief is that properly constructed Bilateral Trade Treaties are the preferred relationship, NOT multilateral. Evidently Mexico has 45 such countries contracted and they were taking manufacturing away from the USA as a result, NOT only because of cheaper labour. Indeed some of these Mexican relationships eg with Europe, were better than twice the labour cost advantage.
Wilbur Ross at Commerce could prove very successful in properly designing and negotiating these new Trade Deals. There is a high probability that he could bring the FAIR deals into focus, an aspect that has eluded many such negotiators in the past. Any major shake up could cause problems in the next few months.

  23. @Bernard

How will this change the EU economic agreement the former prime minister spent so much time?

  24. Wasnt Wibur Ross Secretary of Commerece under Reagean in the era of trickled down economics when big banks and large Corporations lived off the taxpayer money and Reagean and the large trade Unions went toe to toe in wage negotiations

Of course Trump would pick a fight with the Sioux Indians to run the Dakota Pipeline on their lands to poison their water because he has shares in that project.

  27. Chad

You’re on to something there. Trade agreements with strong geopolitical moorings are expected to have flaws. it is all about the long-term goals and objectives. Trump is worried about Mexico, who is struggling to compete with China, a nation with more people, more billionaires and a larger, faster growing middle class than America. A population in love with luxury foreign goods. But sadly, like May et al, Trump longing for a past that is dead.

Lol….Enuff you said, the US is now a blip, an old woman all used up, a has been…lol

  29. enuff,
Trump’s opportunity is to make trade FAIR and change what was passed, not the past. America must protect their Patents especially Tech and Medical. The US must insist on renegotiation and on implementation must monitor and control vigorously. Do you seriously believe that China, Iran etc are easy to negotiate with? You have to send your best negotiators on those errands.

  30. What is there to renogiate are we talking about low end jobs that if or when returned to america would be driven by high labour cost and higher manufacturing expenses
Right now america is in the drivers seat despite some job losses .Trump overreaching of expansionist policies directed at protecting America’s interest cannot be sustained longterm in a market solely designed to create jobs and fiscal policies to lower taxes at the high end

  31. The US rules Technology which has been, is and will be changing the World. Keep tuned and dont take your eyes off the road ahead. Please pray that a few billion humans do not become excess inventory like Buggy whips did after the automobile ascended.

My advice is to hope for a crash short term in Tech so U can climb aboard at more reasonable prices.

Make what trade fair? There is more to trade than fairness ie economics, but a dummy like Trump does not understand. All now the Chinese looking to capitalise on the US leaving the TPP. Making america great again is about the past!! Manufacturing assembly lines manned by humans, coal..the past!

  36. Enuff,
China is not involved in the TPP.

  37. According to Rasmussen Reports, In the four days since his inauguration, Trump’s approval rating has increased by seven points.

42 percent of Americans strongly approve of what Trump is doing, while 33 percent strongly disapprove. Overall, 57 percent approve of the president, while 43 percent disapprove.

  38. 555,
U are still brainless and contribute absolutely nothing.

They shoulda elected Zuma as US Pres, he would know how to “fix” things.

  39. Chad,
according to the reality of political/ social life, no one that wants to shake things up has ever been received well. The same haters, who gain as a result of Jobs, will never return any excess benefits to the Treasury.

Good leaders dont give a rodent’s rectum what the average person “thinks”, the crowd is usual wrong! A prophet is never accepted in his own country.

Positive RESULTS is the only thing that count.

The Technocrats in the Public and Private sectors will just have to get more productive and do what many of my era had to do; take control. The tax payers and the shareholders are paying them to deliver real goods and services. Managing one’s titular boss is one of the unwritten items on their job descriptions. To make the Government look good the
technocrats have to be competent and smart. To produce profits for the share holders management has to be creative.
In the final analysis Politicians and BOD are not all that crucial to the success of either a country or corporation.
