Broken Trident

In relatively recent times, more individuals than one have expressed their consternation with the emblem of the broken trident in the national flag, and its representation in the recently revealed National Monument, claiming an association thereby with Satanism.

Given that there has been no general protest during the previous fifty years of its existence, and given that any depiction of Satan and therefore of whatever objects he may not may not carry is clearly a matter purely of artistic imagination and creative impression, this current outcry during the jubilee of our Independent status might be considered as premised exclusively on zealous excess and may perhaps be owed to the increased visibility of the national standard at this time.

As most of us have learnt, the broken trident signifies principally the delinking of Barbados from Great Britain, whose female personification was Britannia, which served as an emblem of British power. Some may recall the jingoistic boast at the height of Empire that โ€œBritannia rules the wavesโ€ฆโ€. Britannia carries a three pronged fork or trident in most depictions; an implement that is also carried by Neptune, or his Greek counterpart, Poseidon.

The link of Barbados to the trident of Britannia has been emphasized time and again throughout our history, once finding pride of place on our colonial flag, on the colonial badge, on our coinage, and on our stamps. Any internet Google search for the images of โ€œseal of the Colony of Barbadosโ€ will cogently reveal this association.

So far as the link to Satan is concerned, one historianโ€™s answer to the question, โ€œWhy is the Devil often portrayed with a pitchfork?โ€ on the website โ€œAsk Historiansโ€ makes for intriguing reading.

According to the narrative, โ€œmost of the physical features of the modern image of the Devil developed through the mediaeval period as the Devil became more real to Christians as he began to stalk the earth in the minds of ecclesiasticsโ€. He notes that โ€œthese physical features are not of Biblical representationโ€.

Since there was no text to provide guidance as to the appropriate representation, mediaevalists were constrained to revert to formalism– the way of interpreting literature or art that stresses the heavy or exclusive dominance of traditional standard images or motifs, perpetual coded formulas of representation and description. According to one mediaevalist, Norman Cantor, โ€œthe traditional standardized images and motifs are privileged and centered in this view of mediaeval visual and literary art while individual creativity and original discovery are marginalized or excluded altogetherโ€.

He views this formalist approach as ideological โ€“โ€œ the great preponderance of images and motifs was inherited from Greco โ€“Roman Classical art and literature or from the thought world of the Church Fathersโ€ฆwhich in turn was a product of the interaction of Biblical ideas with the classical traditionโ€.

Given this thesis, it should be unsurprising that most depictions of Jesus and Mary are cast in their traditional purely Caucasian form and it might equally be considered prudent on the part of Islam to regard any man-made image or representation of the Prophet to be blasphemous.

Earliest 10th century representations of the Devil depict him with a three-pronged pitchfork, herding souls away from Jesus and steering them into Hell.

According to one historian, Jeffrey Burton Russell, the Devilโ€™s โ€œpitchforkโ€ derives in part from the ancient trident, such as that carried by Poseidon that symbolizes threefold power over the Earth air and sea [Greek mythology], in part from symbols of death, and in part from the instruments used in hell for the torture of the damned [ Biblical ideas].

Conversely, the anonymous author of the piece queries โ€œif the devil were to be made to appear in the real world, why should not that image appear in the real world?โ€.

His thesis is that the Romans had a two-pronged pitchfork for light work but. in Northern Europe , where the soil was heavier and more clayey, the three-pronged pitchfork was developed in the early middle ages.

He reasons that farming communities grew up around the mediaeval abbeys, thus suffusing the daily existence of their inhabitants, the monastics, with the sights, sounds and smells of the peasantry and rural life. Pitchforks would have been a frequent sight in these environs.

Given that the pitchfork of the Devil first appeared in the second half of the early Middle Ages in the minds of ecclesiastical writers and artists; the monks and bishops, he queries whether these creative would not have more likely drawn their inspiration from the peasantry whom they saw daily than from Greek and Roman images of a millennium before.

Indeed, he compares the use of the fork by the Devil to winnow or shepherd away the souls of the ungodly with a passage from the Gospel of Matthew that employs the identical imagery from the opposite perspective-

โ€œHis winnowing fork is in His hand to clear His threshing floor and to gather His wheat into the barn; but He will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire.”

According to the thesis of the author, in the portrayal of good and evil โ€œgoodโ€ is mainly associated with the rich who are thought of as pure and the determiners of what is good and what is evil. The โ€œbadโ€ is associated with all those others who were not similarly blessed to have been born wealthy and thus have to work for a living. Their habits were also seen as bad. According to accepted dogma, the ultimate symbols of bad or evil were hell and the Devil. Hence, according to his argument, the pitchfork used by the poor peasants became associated with evil because of its association with what the good in society considered โ€œbadโ€.

This attractive argument, in my view, serves to refute the affirmation that the trident on our flag is to be associated with Devil worship as some have posited. In any case, the broken trident should logically suggest that we have weaned ourselves away from what the unbroken object is assumed to signify, in this case, Evil.

It is with some hesitation that I make this last point however, since the broken trident in our flag is supposed to denote a political advance on our former status in those days when the entire trident was an integral part of our landmarks. And yet we have seen it fit to retain the epitome of Britannia in the personages of Her Majesty, her heirs and assigns as our Head of state in perpetuity. One may well ask, โ€œIs the trident really broken?โ€

The centrepiece of our 50th anniversary celebrations was Britain’s Prince Harry. The trident might be broken on the flag but psychologically it is still intact.

  2. @ Jeff
A very well researched piece, and most relevant.
You know full well that symbolism is by far more important and impactful than mere historical facts.

Bushie will be brief – because you are a learned man who understands quickly.

The swastika is a sacred symbol in Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism, and Odinism. The word swastika comes from the Sanskrit svastika, which means โ€œgood fortuneโ€ or โ€œwell-being.”

What would be your assessment of any country now, that would build a monument with a swastika…?
….or that would celebrate their anniversary by passing a swastika around the country to be held up and savoured by its children…?

  3. In the first flush of Independence the colours of the flag (aqua marine and gold) were posited as being symbolic of the sea and sun, the broken trident was representative of Neptune/Poseidon and Barbados having risen from the Sea. Now I hear different, yuh hear about history being rewritten I didnโ€™t expect it in my lifetime.

@Bushie, the swastika has come to represent hatred universally. I am not at all sure that the trident, broken or otherwise, has achieved that degree of notoriety. Comparisons are usually odious and indeed so in this case.

  5. Well did americans not elect a president one the comes with symbolic posteuring alligned to White Supremacy words and deeds
We are in the dawning of a new age where facts and truth are no longer relevant.
A souring and a new implantation of words and meanings have become a normalcy making a right seem wrong
Would not be at all surprise to see an acceptable movement of the Swastika.
I recall hearing a white Supremacist proving that acceptabilty of anything can be accomplised. He cited gay mariages which was highly unacceptable in the eighties and have now become a symbol of human rights and part of family values

    @ Jeff
One man’s idea of ‘notoriety’ is another’s casual dismissal of relevance.

Now that Trump has risen, you can expect that highly intelligent and influential persons will revert to the ORIGINAL meaning and VALUES of the swastika ..as they justify its resurgence, while dismissing as irrelevant, its Nazi association.

When our flag was conceived, who is to say that person with nefarious intent did not impose their own hidden agendas …and symbols …into that national embalm?
Have a close look at USA currency and do your research on the symbols thereon… and see if nefarious dark forces have not ALWAYS been in the background pushing their own secret agendas.

What is different now, is that they have become emboldened by the times, and have brought these hidden agendas to the fore….
Kindly explain from your research, the purpose and significance of the ‘monument’….. and of the year-long passing of the ‘trident’ around the country….

Bushie is not saying that we can do anything about it now…. just note the signs of the times and act accordingly.

    @ Sarge,

Your explanation of the broken trident symbolizing Poseidon’s trident because Barbados is supposed “to have risen from the sea” is new to me, I must confess. Why then have the trident broken?

@ Bushie, I know of your belief that these are the end times. But I think that like the philosophers, you are finding “sermons in stones and books in the running brooks”. In other words, overthinking the reality.

The broken trident is our national symbol; the (unbroken) trident is associated with Satan merely because some influential monastics once interpreted it that way. There is nothing Biblical or historical or real about that representation just as there is nothing factual about modern day representations of God as an old man with a long white beard or a Jesus with pure Caucasian features, blue eyes and all.

  8. Bushie

We would like to insert that the swastika come originally from Egypt civilization. And yes it appeared elsewhere.

We also wish you luck in trying to convince Jeff about some realities not associated with the strict meaning of law.

Of course you are right. And what you are trying to say has more meanings to us than all the dead laws on all books. Or misguided wandering of leaders who would have wanted to institutionalize lies to have us serve wickedness.

I endorse the Bushman: a most beautifully written piece.

But does it not make it’s own resounding case Mr Cumberbatch that the context of the Trident is steeped in a long ago mythology and ‘artistic’ interpretation that manifests writ-large in the duality of the fanciful Gods of Zeus and the Christian belief!

Does the aforementioned BushTea, for example, not continually tussle as all Christians do with their broken ‘trident’ from the Devil’s will over their Godly intentions?

So with that ‘odious’ comparison surely the query โ€œIs the trident really broken?โ€ can be answered, Yes.

We broke from the ‘evil empire’ and daily tussle to find our way even as we invite (relapse) to bring the empire’s representative regularly back into our life!

    Just saying…

Not to be simplistic but undoubtedly, we are again creating a mystique of the type which absolutely authored the symbol.

But again, lovely writing craft and research!

  11. Pachaman comments gives even more weight to acceptabilty on any thing when sufficiently well reasoned to uncover the origins

“…Or misguided wandering of leaders who would have wanted to institutionalize lies to have us serve wickedness”.

@Pachamama, you realize of course that this symbol is 50 years old? Are you then condemning ALL our leaders during that time.? Or is it that you do not have a clue what you are writing about?

  13. @jeff
Faulty memory not aqua marine but ultramarine, my recall is based on what I read in the newspapers at the time.

I just checked my copy of Barbados Heritage A-Z and I quote:

The National Flag, flown for the first time at midnight 29/30 November 1966, consists of three equal vertical strips of ultramarine, gold and ultramarine, with a broken trident in the centre of the gold strips. The trident is that of Neptune in the old colony badge, and symbolises both continuity and the break with tradition made by Independence.

That should be the final word.

  14. Errol Barrow was a 33 degree lodge man. A man called Prescott (Prescod), we seem to remember, designed the national fag. He was another lodge man. We’ll bet the author of the national anthem was another lodge man. In spite of the trick about have competitions to decide.

We seem to remember that Barrow and his henchmen were associated with Prince Hall lodge somewhere in Greame Hall. What a coincidence.

We always wondered why we had to have these symbols. When we look at the 60/70 countries ‘gaining’ independence around that time. Countries that were using predominately earth colours. Colours like black, green and gold, for example. Why Barbados was so different?

Fifty-six (56) of the signers of the Declaration of Independence, in America, were openly senior members of lodges.

As lodge men they ceaselessly tried to imposed their supposedly superior world view on us all.

But we know that Black people know very little about the real secrets of lodges. It is the Scottish Lodges which continue to, even to this day, keep Black lodge members in the dark.

The irony is that the deep secrets about lodges are about ‘Black” people. And that secret is the biggest of them all.

With all of these lodge people around the place, one should presuppose a high level of wickedness.

  15. The Lodge suffocates Barbados with its ”symbols/customs”. Arthur is a lodgeman also. How will this work against Mia?

    Couldn’t help!

””’@Pachamama, you realize of course that this symbol is 50 years old? Are you then condemning ALL our leaders during that time.? Or is it that you do not have a clue what you are writing about?””

Fifty years is nothing. We deal with hundreds of thousands of years of human evolution. And sometimes more.

In Brazil we, a few years ago, discovered a distinctively African civilization, carbon dated at 56,000 years. Fifty years is a mere twinkling of an eye.

What should be more important to us is the real history of the country we call Barbados but should be properly known as Ichirouganaim by its original owners. But of course that has no relevance to you and the narrow mindedness presented.

Well if it is a condemnation to tell the whole story about your so-called leaders. Yes we are!

And we have always done this. For example, we will posit that Barrow should not be referred to as a ‘national hero’ nor ‘father of independence’ because we now know, with certainty, that the CIA was the real force behind running the British out of its former colonies. And the role by Barrow was merely peripheral. We have the historical documents.

But even a barely sentient being would suggest that so many countries gaining independence is very rare in all of history. And would want to look at causation, not petty nationalism.

With all the writings we have done here and you still have the temerity to suggest we have no idea about what we speak is a measure of a certain kind of backwardness. Have you ever been able to win any argument with us?

  18. @Pacha

This morning you are showing the ills of our brain trust.

On the one hand, a world renowned historian does not know how to call the true name of his island.

On the other, we have a renowned legal expert not familiar with significant historical documents within his own department of history, at his University of the West Indies. Documents that must give a different view of Barbados’ legal culture.

That is the cultural failings we are to face.

  25. @Jeff

In reading your opening paragraph you pointed out more individuals than one have expressed …………

I assume your provocatively posted this article as I have interpreted that there is not much serious discussion on this matter as more than one individual could amount to two. Through history we have had deity related to certain events. In African religion there was no monolithic God. There were Gods for rain, sun, among other things and this was similar to the Aztecs and Maya civilizations (hope I have spelt the name correctly) , Symbols are left to interpretation. Why is hell associate with fire?

My interpretation of the broken trident is that the control which Britanica had over our legal, judicial and administrative systems were no more and therefore we had the power to rule our own destiny. You may argue that we only recently have control of the legal system with the birth of CCJ.

I have not detect no any meaningful discontent with the Trident which has been placed in the time capsule to be open in fifty years time. I hope I am alive to see that historic moment.

  28. The origin of the Trident has nothing to do with the Devil. What Bajans should recognise is the fact that the designer(s) separated the Trident at its FOUNDATION, its BASE, its GROUNDING in MATTER and then held that broken emblem over the nation’s head, hence the nation has no sound ANCHOR and will always be steered by Britannia and others as they please. Remove Man from the equation and you remove the Devil.

  29. A clear sign of above average intelligence is the realisation that the more we learn, the more we do not understand. Wise people therefore NEVER dismiss new ideas simply because they are beyond their immediate comprehension…. or because they conflict with their current perceptions of reality.
Life is even more complex than the even most intelligent of us contemplates.

    @ Jeff
Not picking on you, but some time ago you admitted to a complete ignorance of the spiritual realm and of the spiritual laws associated therewith. If therefore you choose to write an article that touches on spiritual symbols it is surprising that you could be as dogmatic as you are on the matter of symbols of satanism and their import.

There are MANY things that have direct impact on our lives …and deaths ….and which we do not understand…and often not even know about.

In this particular case time will tell ….and not much time is needed either.

  30. “should be properly known as Ichirouganaim by its original owners.”

What empirical evidence is there to this?

  31. Oh Jeff, exit, stage left, we are off to the moon!

What are you trying to say here my dear man? Since you were totally floored by Bush Tea and his swastika analogy it appears you are a bit out of sorts.

The mere fact that Bushie knows that the trident is also a well known motif in Sanskrit culture (the standard of the god Shiva in his eternal battle to fight evil (darkness) with the three-prong fork of good (light) must speak glowingly of the manโ€™s metaphysical understanding.

Are you implying that any move to full republic status must involve not only a total overhaul of the legal framework or super body (Constitution) but also โ€˜mustโ€™ require at minimum some tweaking or in some cases full replacement of the many symbols (including the flag)?

Oh lord, what would the regiment and the office of GG (the new el presidente) do should such a calamity fall on โ€˜brokeโ€™ Barbados?

The broken trident must be replaced and substituted by a symbol more appropriate to the struggles and aspirations of a secular nation having shed its colonial and Judeo-Christian past.

What about a motif showing a beach bum dressed as a rasta man hustling two tourists on the beach and begging them for a little foreign money in exchange for rub down with aloe vera? The Worthing beach as it stands today would be the ideal setting for such a depiction of Barbados in 2016 and going forward.

What sayest thou, oh descendant of the famous Cumberbatch clan whom Benedict would gladly like to meet?

    Hip hip hooray!!

  34. Whether the trident is a pitch fork or a garden fork i never heard it to be correlated to cult or devil worship
i read where the pitch fork was a symbol of power

The idea was carried over from the Ancient Greeks/Romans, with Poseien/Neptuneโ€™s trident, a three pronged fork, symbolising power over Earth, Sea and Sky. This matches with Satan being โ€œprince of the worldโ€ in the bible and as a result the two are often correlated.

@Miller, my query is “Can we truly claimed to have broken the trident when we retain as the head of out independent state the epitome of Britannia?”

โ€œAnd did you read my response to the woefully misplaced analogy of the swastika at 8:47am?โ€

Yes, I did! And Bushie’s argument still stands firm (and well grounded in the earth of commonsense). The analogy to the innocent symbol of the swastika- a very old multicultural and religious sign for peace and good fortune- is worthy of debate.

The same way Britain used the trident of Shiva (representing good over evil or similar battles waged by other gods, Poseidon or Neptune, in your more recent classical Greco-Roman indoctrination) to rule the waves and conquer and exploit simple people and lands the Nazis used a similar symbolic motif to rally the Germanic race in their blind folly of genocide.

Barbadians generally claim, especially its clerical elite, to be a Christian nation. Why use pagan or non-Christian symbolism to define the aspirations and achievements of the nation?

But then again, as you might have been indoctrinated accordingly, the Solar symbols are there โ€˜hiddenโ€™ in plain sight and at the heart of your Judeo-Christian culture.

What about the symbolism incorporated in the statue of liberation (freedom) from slavery (aka Bussa)? Why not use that as the central theme in your new republic flag?
