As discussion continues about the massive search for missing woman Karen Harris last weekend, a watchman at Buttals Plantation in St. George is reporting he was harassed by three members of the search partyBarbados Today

This case is unprecedented in the annals of search and rescue in Barbados!

It is obvious that in such a case one will find the George Zimmermans who think that Blacks are there for a blood sport where they have the dogs and, like during Dr. Martin Luther King Jr’s campaigns, they could loose them at people whenever they want. If my memory serves me correctly, we are in the twenty-first Century – and not the seventeenth, eighteenth or nineteenth. Yet we have three Caucasian males treating Mr. Sam as if we were still in one of the latter three, and he was a runaway slave whose Human Rights they could contravene with impunity.

It does not fall under their purview to interrogate anyone in this country. They were part of one of the biggest manhunts in Barbadian history which was searching for a missing Caucasian female. Perhaps the three really thought that they were part of a massa day hunt when they found Mr. Sam, a watchman, carrying out his nightly duties at Buttals Plantation, and wanted to take him back to the one he had run away from.

This smacks of racism, and must be vehemently rejected.

This episode will put Barbados and its population in the limelight for all of the wrong reasons, and this Government – and especially the Minister of Tourism, Richard Sealy, should start doing some damage control by denouncing what went on at Buttals in the strongest terms if not Barbados will find itself on the list of countries which condone Human Rights violations, and as fast as tourism has picked up, it will plummet.

I would like to hear ASP Welch’s views on this manhunt by those three vigilantes who violated Mr. Sam’s rights as laid down in the Constitution of Barbados which give those who reside here – or even visit us – the right to go about their business without let or hindrance – unless they are known to the police. Does anyone know what the consequences of this unprovoked and dastardly attack on this man who was only carrying out his duties – alone – at that plantation will be?

What nightmares could he have?

He says that he will continue working there, but who knows what will happen with him later on.

Who will pay the doctors if he has to go for therapy?

Most importantly though is: Will these three slave hunters be brought to justice?

Mr. Sam’s Human Rights were violated in several ways:

  1. He was hunted down with a vehicle
  2. He was interrogated by the three Caucasians
  3. He was coerced into giving up his boss’ phone number
  4. There was mental abuse also.

I am of the opinion that if Mr. Sam had not stopped running they would have run him over, and the RBPF would have another case on its hands. I hope that the search for them will be just as elaborate and extensive, and they will be soon found!

Same consequences of the two fire starters up in Christ Church.

    All true.
    But shiite pinks….. he is a watchman….

Looka we got big-up politicians, lawyers, managers, leaders… with big-ass salaries and degrees and thing….
You see the kinda shiite those fellows does do…?

Forgive the watchman…. he probably figured that when in Rome he should do as the brass bowl Romans do….

For one thing last weekend “operation” has compromised the integrity of Crime Stoppers,as should be , far as many Bajans are concerned. Ms Dash should have participated as a private citizen, and not under the blanket of Crime Stoppers.

Have you seen the missing person’s notice in today’s Nation?
SCHOOL GIRL MISSING ……she is about 5’4″ tall, Slim with a LONG FACE and NECK. Has a PROTRUDING FOREHEAD, POINTED NOSE, THIN LIPS, is SMALL BREASTED, has BOW LEGS, and her DARK HAIR, is plaited in cornrow.

    I tell ya!

Guards in Barbados are not armed unless assigned to cash. To repeat.

Note he is referred to as a watchman.
    +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

The post of Watchman on a plantation in Barbados is as old as slavery.

In my day, if you had business on the plantation at night you went to the owner or manager and he would direct you to the Watchman or Super-intendant.

The watchman, (I think I have come across she’s too when I looked through the returns from 1817 for all parishes about a decade ago) was a feared and respected individual, nearly always mature in years.

Today, these returns are on the internet so here is what I found for St. George.

    http://interactive.ancestry.com/1129/CSUK1817_133760-00321/3084511?backurl=http%3a%2f%2fsearch.ancestry.com%2fcgi-bin%2fsse.dll%3fdb%3dBritishSlaves%26rank%3d1%26new%3d1%26so%3d3%26MSAV%3d1%26msT%3d1%26gss%3dms_db%26gsfn_x%3dXO%26gskw%3dapplewhaite%26uidh%3dud5&ssrc=&backlabel=ReturnSearchResults

Pages 322 to 419 have the St. George returns for those of us who will actually read!!

The 1817 returns show that the Watch at Walkers Plantation was a slave called Jimmy Walker. He was 57 and described as Black.

Over at Stepney, Quaco was the Watch. He was 50 and described as Black.

At Salters, Jimmy, aged 60 and also described as Black was the Watch.

At Locust Hall, Will at 70 held the post of Watchman. He also was described as Black.

At The Mount Plantation there was Cuffy Mapp. At 50 he was also described as Black.

The Farm had Robin, 60 years old and described as Black.

All so far are described as Barbadian, meaning born here.

The first African watchman I came across was at Constant Plantation. Captain was his name and in 1817 he was 52 and also described as Black.

If as I suspect the owner/manager of Buttalls directed the three men to the watchman and the watchman ran …….. can’t be the watchman.

His accent indicates to me that Mr. Sam is not from Barbados and perhaps he does not understand how it works.

  5. @ Anthony Davis,

I am surprised that this story has raised so much controversy.

Let’s be clear, we are talking about a country often referred to as “Little England”; a tag which has been accepted by many middle-class Afro-Bajans. Not surprising when you consider how many Negro fools that are living on that wretched island who take pride in the fact they share the same bloodline of that of their colonial masters.

Why should anyone be surprised about the preferential treatment received by this white woman over that of an Afro-Bajan? The root of this problem does not originate from our tragic slave history. It stems from the time we gained our independence under the leadership of the so called founding father Errol Barrow.

The era of independence should have ushered in a period of genuine revolutionary change. Instead we were governed by a man whose sole purpose was to facilitate the continuation of business as usual. Barrow’s principle interest whilst in office was to save guard the white status quo. He cared little for his kith and kin – the Afro Bajan. National hero! More a lackey!

The fact that we refuse to discuss this man’s legacy speaks volumes about us as people.

As for me, I view this affair from afar – with a bemused look on my face. I thank God that I was not born and raised on that island. Those Afro-Bajans who reside in Barbados have truly squandered their inheritance.

    +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

… but there has been a revolutionary change.

Since we have become independent we our National debt has gone from insignificant to hundreds of millions …. billions? …. of dollars.

We have gone from owing nobody anything and being able atleast to feed ourselves to being totally dependent on imported foods.

We have coined a new definition of independence!!

  7. @ Exclaimer…

You also forgot to mention that we often times refer to Britain as the mother country lol. Your observations are not dissimilar to mine, however, trying to engage Barbadians in such discussions; many times I’m left having an appreciation for why some blacks caught and sold other blacks into slavery.

  8. In recent months I have been going over to the Accra hotel to their karaoke, it’s a downright shame the attitude of the black staff at the bar to some local blacks; mind you, not all employees are like this. I’ve been keeping an eye on this individual who seems to be singling out Trinidadian indians for special treatment, as they seems to be the new massas of Barbadians.
I’ve observed this behavior by Barbadians over a number of years at various places where white people frequent including local whites, no wonder these three
red legs/necks felt so embolden to accost this fool in this manner.

  9. @Miller

    Your writing is indeed interesting.

However, why would I trust some fella seeking media attention who may well have “created” the rope for sensational effect. 3 White fellas with lights, guns and being somewhat disrespectful is far more believable.

  10. Exclaimer, Whitehill et al

Sir Errol should have been duncey and followed the “revolutionary” leadership of Manley and Burnham, 2 far larger Nations that are absolute FAILURES!

Sir Errol should have been an equal opportunity TEEF and stole ALL the money for HIMSELF like Burnham did from Whites, Portugese, Chinese, East Indians and AFRICAN/ Black Guyanese. He made them all EQUALS in—– POVERTY!

  11. Watch the use of smoke an mirrors by Professor Sir Hilary Beckles at a recent lecture ….. standing room only if you please.

    http://www.nationnews.com/nationnews/news/64011/-criminals-heroes

The Nation summarized it in the first sentence “THE PARLIAMENT OF BARBADOS has been challenged to define slavery as a crime against humanity in order to deny past slave owners being robed with a mantle of national hero.”

When I looked at the Slave Returns for Barbados in 1817 about a decade ago I found there were over 6000 slave owners.

Less than 500 owned the large plantations and thus the bulk of the slaves

More than 600 Free Negroes and Free Mulattoes owned slaves.

There were about 5000 other slave owners.

The slave population was about 80,000.

On average each of the 6000 slave owners thus owned about 13 to 14 slaves.

One such slave owner was Ann Gill, a free mulatto slave owner and National Hero.

Here is her 1817 return both in her own right and as executrix of her husband, Alexander Gill.

    http://interactive.ancestry.com/1129/CSUK1817_133760-00127/3073617?backurl=http%3a%2f%2fsearch.ancestry.com%2fcgi-bin%2fsse.dll%3fdb%3dBritishSlaves%26rank%3d1%26new%3d1%26so%3d3%26MSAV%3d1%26msT%3d1%26gss%3dms_db%26gsfn%3dmaria%26gsfn_x%3dXO%26gskw%3dann%2bgill%2bfm%26uidh%3dud5&ssrc=&backlabel=ReturnSearchResults

She owned Polly, Betsy Ann, Maria, Nanny Joe, Lucy Ann, Rebecca, Kitty and Mary. Their ages ranged from 50 years to 4 years. The first two were described as Black, the other 7 as coloured.

Her husband’s estate of which she was executrix, owned 2 slaves, Pamelia, 17 years old and described as coloured and Thomas, 19 years old and described as Black.

She thus was responsible for 11 slaves, just below the national average at the time!!

The problem Is the local press for one reason or another is unable to critically review the utterances of so called luminaries.

However, a child on a computer could show the professor to be talking rubbish and could advise the Government to steer clear of any advice offered it by the goodly professor and knight.

Free advice is often worth exactly what you pay for it …. nothing!!

  12. This whole story is sickening. I am not surprised. Nothing seems to have really changed in Barbados. I was born and raised outside of Barbados to Bajan parents and I would never, ever allow any white person to treat me with any kind of disrespect. Not here in Canada and certainly not in Barbados.

I have observed this slave type mentality among my Bajan family and it infuriates me. It’s like same old same old. I think one has to leave the island and live abroad among non Blacks to really feel the effects of racism and see that very little has changed.

Off topic…someone please explain to me why the white people’s band gets to be one of the first bands on Kadooment day? Crop over, as I understand it, is a celebration of end of crop season by the workers…how the hell did ‘massa’ get up in to it?????

I am serious about above question….

  13. A pity the links to the slave returns aren’t working. Google slave registers of former british colonies.

    Then go to this site.

    http://search.ancestry.com/search/db.aspx?dbid=1129

In keywords put in ann gill fm

Put the name of one of her slaves in First Name & Middle Name, say Maria

    Hit Search

Then select the magnifying glass on the right of the record for Ann Gill to view image.

Enjoy …. and …. while doing so, emancipate yourself from mental slavery!!

Hope someone from the NAtion is reading

  18. I have a few questions:

Has the Royal Barbados Police Force interviewed Mrs Harris as yet?

Is this another case of preferential treatment like they gave to the Bjerkham man who killed his son?

Will she be allowed to be interviewed only after she has been coached on exactly what story to stick to?

How is it she was said to be found at relatives and then it turned out that she was at house in Moonshine?

How is it that we were told that she was delusional yet remembered her husband’s number?

We will never get the answers…….after all this is Barbados.

  19. What I want to know is if that drone was ever used to search for bajans who go missing pretty regularly on the island and did the taxpayers know that these idiots who are supposed to be leaders and authorities have a drone that was either donated to the island or bought with taxpayer’s money.

Why are black men in position of power/authority in Barbados so damn stupid and dumb?

Why were resources wasted on this woman needlessly? Will anyone be arrested for holding her? (which I doubt the holding part, I am sure she was having herself a good old time at taxpayers expense). I am just surprised that she has not come out and say that a black man raped her and held her hostage like they have done for centuries.

Moneybrain….you noticed I did not attack any of those half-assed bajan whites who were needlessly attacking people for no reason at all during that farce of wasting taxpayers money called a search. I would like to see some of them go to Bedstuy,do or die, Brooklyn, and try that crap.

    Carib said:

In all fairness, Bajans tend to pass on this slave minded mentality, which is a genetic memory, from generation to generation, shamelessly. They refuse to break the cycle by giving some of these dumb ass bajan whites a good cut-ass and quiet them down, so you really cannot blame the whites when they are allowed to do crap and get away with it, even the black authorities and political leaders allow them to do anything sell drugs, kill, beat and injure black people, white collar crime, call blacks niggers to their face, treat them badly when they go to the clubs and the whites are falling down drunk, then they show their true racist attitudes, on more than one occasion in Barbados I had to bitch slap one or two bajan whites, I do not suffer idiots lightly.

Bajans need to educate themselves and their off-springs to break the cycle, as I said they so remind me of people in the deep south both black and white who believe slavery still exists and blacks should be treated as 3/5 human, which by the way is still written into the constitution when I last I had to study it. What is the excuse in Barbados to allow people who are not even considered white outside of Barbados, to practice that nonsense.

Barbados is a shame and disgrace.

Whitehill…..the attitudes to black patrons at white owned clubs by blacks who work at those clubs is a result of management telling them to treat their own like that, it’s been happening from the days of Racials, now Harbor Lights or Fights.

I even saw that behavior in St. Lucia by black workers at the hotel when other blacks were guests. The leaders and authorities of these islands have to put down their corrupt foot, let’s see if that happens.

  20. Some lawyer like David Commisiong or Douglas Trotman should take up this case for this poor man. Certainly, the police would know from the “Mr Ward” who these three men are. Did they plan to use the rope to tie up whomever they find?

Study ya head good Pinkie. Has anybody in Barbados ever kidnapped a middle aged white woman?

In law there is something called REASONABLE and PROBABLE cause.

The police are supposed to operate on REASON and on SCIENTIFIC PROBABILITY not on feelings, not on emotion, not on racist paranoia.

And since a middle aged white woman has NEVER been kidnapped in Barbados what was the probability that this one had been kidnapped? Somewhere near zero?

In fact now we know that the probability of anybody kidnapping a white middle (or as my Little Johnnie rightly said an old woman) aged Bajan woman is in fact ZERO.

The Royal Barbados Police Force should not carry our EXPENSIVE operations based on the racist paranoia of white Bajan men and their subservient women.

How much did this operation cost us Bajan tax payers?

If it turns out that the woman or her family withheld information from the police or lied to the police will the police arrest anybody?

And since Pinkie feels that the family had REASON to believe that she was kidnapped and since she is now back home have the police interviewed the woman and her family in order to find out why they seemed to feel that she had been kidnapped?

Are the police looking for the supposed kidnapper? Do they want our help in finding this mythical kidnapper?

  30. People kidnap for two principal reasons.

If the person is a young woman the kidnapper wants sex.

If the person is old and rich the kidnapper wants money.

Bajan men for the most part have no sexual interest in peri/post menopausal women. Such women are largely free from the sexual lusts of men. This woman could have walked naked from Christ Church to St. Lucy and nobody would touch her sexually.

To the best of our knowledge she has no money. Her secondary school was mentioned but not any workplace. So let us say that she has never done any paid work in her life then clearly she has no money.

Her husband is described as a businessman but we don’t know whether or not he is a rich successful businessman. A lotta, lotta businessmen in Barbados are only one government cheque (some call government contract cheques corporate welfare) away from bankruptcy.

It should be done away with. They are a full fledged band and they should only go first by the criteria set out by the NCF such as drawing numbers and not by entitlement.I doubt the NCF has the balls to do so.Probably for the sake of tourism it will continue since we are brainwashed to believe only non-blacks are accounted as being credibly tourist.

    You might actually learn something!!

  35. @ MoneyBrain March 5, 2015 at 10:42 AM,

We will never know what could have been if Errol Barrow had taken an alternative more revolutionary path after independence. I find it sad and patronising that you made such a flippant remark that Barrow was too smart not to have gone down the path of “teefing” from other groups unlike other Caribbean leaders from his era. Is this the same voice who claims to be Mr Objective?

What is your solution for redressing the historical legacy of slavery in Barbados? What amicable path do you suggest that we could take to address those wrongs of yesteryear which still have an impact on the social fabric of this country – even to this day. As has been born out in this story.

Money Brain, you have no idea how to improve the social fabric in Barbados. Your mantra is cast in stone, and is repetitive and transparent. You believe that those Bajans who gained their wealth and authority from slavery are the entitled class and should remain so.

There are others like me who would like to see the total dismantling/destruction of this old inbred system. This is where our government has totally failed the masses. The solution to this problem rests uniquely with the Afro-Bajan masses. My only question is will they (the masses) ever be ready to impose their will and bring change to a corrupt and rotten system?

  36. I cannot believe the bitter hatred I have been reading in these comments — name calling (Whitey etc) and all the prejudgment and one sidedness of the commentators. I only hope our dearly beloved AND NEEDED (mostly white) tourists are not reading this bile. I am sorry for this beloved country if you exhibit this same resentment in the shops, restaurants, hotels, buses and streets of Barbados. Grow up! and stop it.

  37. That was not a massive search, just unprecedented by what we know.

I’ll describe what was a massive search in Barbados involving over a thousand people over the course of time but for the moment I will speak of one search for the identity of a missing person in which I was involved.

Sunday, the day after New Years Day 2011, I was part of a hiking group of 7 who went looking for Caves, a Tunnel and a Well once used to provide drinking water. We planned to walk through a gully in St. Thomas/St. James, the deepest one in Barbados as far as I can tell.

We found the Well pretty quickly and saw it had been recently used!!

We then found what we thought was a second well nearby and of all things a human skull!!

    We called the Police.

We also called a good friend, an ex RCMP who is steeped in Police procedure. Three of us waited for the arrival of the Police …… all three female ….. and the remaining four continued down the Gully after also waiting some time.

The four of us got out of the gully around 8:30 pm after some harrowing experiences in the gully and met back up with the other three on Highway 2A. The Police did come shortly after the four of us separated from the other three.

To cut a long story short, the Police took the bones we had found. Over the course of the week the ex RCMP friend decided we should assist the Police in recovering more bones. He organized the effort with Police consent.

On crutches he dutifully made his way down into the gully. He provided ladders and labour to be able to get into the second “well” so we could see if there were any bones left in it as we had figured out by then that there had been an attempt at cleaning it and the bones we had found were brought up with the debris.

With the Police present, we went down into the well the following Saturday, it was about 40 feet deep, but found no other bones. We found the Tunnel. The ex RCMP friend abandoned his crutches and went down the ladder too!!

He tracked down the well cleaners and I was present when he interviewed them. They thought the bones were “Cow Bones” or “Horse Bones”. By then we had recovered 100 bones, assembled them as best we could and were able to show the well cleaners a picture of an unmistakably human skeleton. They agreed to meet us and the Police again and to finish cleaning out debris so other bones could be found. We found a few more after the cleaning. I discovered the human body contains 206 bones. We found about half.

We did not leave it there. The identity was unknown. At the time Government had no forensic pathologist (can’t remember the right term) to analyse the remains nor the funds to hire one. Ex RCMP knew of a recent archaeological effort in which two had worked and contacted them through a friend. They were only too pleased to donate their services so ex RCMP saw to the payment of their airfare and accommodation.

They were able to determine the approximate age and time of death as well as sex and race.

Members of the group then decided to use the Nation library and extract the names of missing persons going as far back as possible.

Turns out there were 35 if memory serves me right, very few females. I recognized the name of Thelia Snagg who disappeared years ago as a school girl. A few of the men were fishermen who were lost at sea. The bulk just disappeared without a trace.

We narrowed it down to one possibility but the dental record did not match. Ex RCMP then found another possibility not in the 35. Turned out not to be him either.

Looks like some people have disappeared and no one has said a word.

I tell this experience to show that regardless of colour, when faced with such a situation, humans respond the only way they can.

I understand why the Police are asking the public to report missing persons as soon as possible after they go missing.

Some actually have gone unreported in the past as unbelievable as it may sound.

“The Blue Box cart always had its origins in going first because they were non-masquerading band. Was a small group of drunk tourists, less than 20 at the time who wanted feel a part of the festivities.”

How do you know they were “a small group of drunk tourists”? Tourists from where in the summer months? Who would have ‘organized’ their ad hoc participation in such a developing street parade?

Why not a small band of Bajan whites known to be some of the biggest consumers of spirits in Barbados in order to deaden their senses to deal with the fact they were no longer large and in charge as they were 50 or so years earlier?
Don’t you think that the fact they took priority in the parade was a deliberately designed replica in street pantomime of their good days of yore when Massa was in charge and always led the way to see that Mr. Hardin’ can’t burn?

Bajan men for the most part have no sexual interest in peri/post menopausal women. Such women are largely free from the sexual lusts of men. This woman could have walked naked from Christ Church to St. Lucy and nobody would touch her sexually

What a thing to say !. Some years ago a well entrenched politicians in a constituency which was ,and still is, regarded as a BLP stronghold, for the first time ,lost that seat to a member of the DLP, because he made similar comments about his female opponent.

Crop over, as I understand it, is a celebration of end of crop season by the workers…how the hell did ‘massa’ get up in to it?????

I am serious about above question….
    …………………………………………………………………………………………………..
Crop Over Celebrations is a figment of our historians imagination, and an excuse jump up and do bad.

At the end of the crop, and I’ve seen quite a few. Many of the workers employed in the sugar harvest were out of a job. The plantations retained a fraction of these workers to tend the cane fields. For many the next payday, if they were lucky, was a few month down the road, when “Back Money” was paid.
There was no rejoicing and celebrations, at the end of the crop, as we are being led to believe.
If there were any form of celebrations, it was done by the Plantation owners and managers, who would be looking forward to a hefty cheque, in a more timely fashion that what obtains today.
In fact at the end of the crop, workers then would feel just as dejected as todays cane farmers and cotton pickers, who had to wait a long , long time before receiving a pay cheque.
So Blue Box Cart has every right to be part of this annual facade.

  41. @Exclaimer

The people who were slaves have been dead for more than 150 yrs! They suffered NOT you. My family 200 yrs ago down in the Coal mines at 8 yrs and dead by 20-25 of lung disease suffered much more than you. The best Bajans/ Cbean people should anticipate is some $$$ invested in better schooling, maybe some Medical investment help.

Personally I know few, if any, Whiteys that benefited from slavery who still live or have $$$. My recent ancestors were relatively poor, my mother was an orphan and my father went to work at 13 from Cawmere to help his parents support his siblings.
My father worked hard and eventually did quite well, he PAID high Taxes unlike so many black business people who escaped Income Taxes for a very long time. If you know where my family Slave $$$$$$ are then you have my permission to TEK it, cause I never seen or received any!

This whole concept that all Bajan Whites are rich former Slave master types is a LOAD of SYHTE! Those who believe that know nothing on the topic. The white actress Gwyneth Paltrow discovered she had Bajan great granny, Stoute, whose stated reason for migrating to the US was because there was too much competition in the seamstress trade in Bim. The best known White Bajan business people mostly come from poorer families that never ever owned Slaves. Bizzy, COW, Sir David et al.

My family and I owe Black people NOTHING, besides Respect and some help in business and life advice. I have met black peeps for the first time who on learning my name have said that my father or brother helped them in business. Treating black people as equals is all I owe. I conduct much of my business here in TO with black Bajans wherever possible ie furnace, car seller, etc.

I am a real Bajan having spent much of my formative years down in the village playing Cricket, Soccer etc. When I come in at the Airport there is usually someone I know from village days or school to give me a shout and I always acknowledge them.

Truth is that Burnham became the richest Black man on Earth—HOW??? He teef the Guyanese peoples money! Who really benefited from the Guyanese Revolution—–Burnham. When he passed the no trade with Portugal, which I can understand, he proceeded to PROVE what an HYPOCRITICAL Bastard he was by calling my father’s company in Georgetown and asking how much Portugese Wine we had and then demanding it be all sent to his Wine Cellars. YES Forbesy had NO INTENTION of changing his preferences to suit. He screwed up Guyana and they have NEVER recovered. Why you think they love to work in Bim?

Let me be very clear that I DONT treat black Bajans as in any way inferior or disrespectfully. I came up in amongst far too many to behave that way.

It may be true that some whiteys are prejudiced but not the majority. Any minority community is likely to be concerned about the vast majority.

Which Cbean island or elsewhere has redesigned its Social Fabric successfully to your liking? What would you want? You propose what you want or expect because if I suggest you will say I am dictating to you. I await your response.

Check the facts first before making or perpetuating myths!

I am white and use Whitey all the time on BU (probably more than most), open talk is best once the participants are open minded and thinking.

Miller please man U dont know that Bim receives nuff British tourists in the Summer, Lord havest mercy man. I could a lost nuff money betting U had to know that. Wuhla!

Every year recruiting people to cut canes gets more difficult. The man and woman who cuts the most canes are awarded the King and Queen of the Crop.Besides recognition , I think their award should be commensurate to their long standing dedication.Land comes to mind.

If, as you stay, the celebration was with the managers and owners, who we know where white, then you are indeed correct in their participation.

My problem is more with them being first year in year out when the selection is supposed to be by draw. That’s not okay. In fact, it is usually the church band who is in first and then Blue Box Cart.

Whether you or your family at one time had or did not have money, you would have benefited because of your skin color. Period.

No one is saying you were handed anything…who get’s something for nothing in life!! but if you went into business, the white Bajans with money who STILL control the island, would be likely to help you along. Not to say that Black Bajans did not also build wealth despite their circumstances however there were/are more obstacles in the way. Still are in many places on this big blue marble.

Trust if the Black business were able to get away with not paying taxes, or as much in taxes, then the White businesses benefit also. Happens everywhere even in Canada, as you should know.

While everyone deserves respect, regardless of color, you continuously downplay the legacy of slavery and its impact on the overall human community. Because of that attitude Black men, women and children will continue to be harassed, discriminated against and killed without retribution.

  50. Is there any online record of Reverend Gerry Seale’s comment this morning to the media? This is a White Caucasian who has categorically stated there is racism in Barbados.
