As discussion continues about the massive search for missing woman Karen Harris last weekend, a watchman at Buttals Plantation in St. George is reporting he was harassed by three members of the search partyBarbados Today

This case is unprecedented in the annals of search and rescue in Barbados!

It is obvious that in such a case one will find the George Zimmermans who think that Blacks are there for a blood sport where they have the dogs and, like during Dr. Martin Luther King Jr’s campaigns, they could loose them at people whenever they want. If my memory serves me correctly, we are in the twenty-first Century – and not the seventeenth, eighteenth or nineteenth. Yet we have three Caucasian males treating Mr. Sam as if we were still in one of the latter three, and he was a runaway slave whose Human Rights they could contravene with impunity.

It does not fall under their purview to interrogate anyone in this country. They were part of one of the biggest manhunts in Barbadian history which was searching for a missing Caucasian female. Perhaps the three really thought that they were part of a massa day hunt when they found Mr. Sam, a watchman, carrying out his nightly duties at Buttals Plantation, and wanted to take him back to the one he had run away from.

This smacks of racism, and must be vehemently rejected.

This episode will put Barbados and its population in the limelight for all of the wrong reasons, and this Government – and especially the Minister of Tourism, Richard Sealy, should start doing some damage control by denouncing what went on at Buttals in the strongest terms if not Barbados will find itself on the list of countries which condone Human Rights violations, and as fast as tourism has picked up, it will plummet.

I would like to hear ASP Welch’s views on this manhunt by those three vigilantes who violated Mr. Sam’s rights as laid down in the Constitution of Barbados which give those who reside here – or even visit us – the right to go about their business without let or hindrance – unless they are known to the police. Does anyone know what the consequences of this unprovoked and dastardly attack on this man who was only carrying out his duties – alone – at that plantation will be?

What nightmares could he have?

He says that he will continue working there, but who knows what will happen with him later on.

Who will pay the doctors if he has to go for therapy?

Most importantly though is: Will these three slave hunters be brought to justice?

Mr. Sam’s Human Rights were violated in several ways:

  1. He was hunted down with a vehicle
  2. He was interrogated by the three Caucasians
  3. He was coerced into giving up his boss’ phone number
  4. There was mental abuse also.

I am of the opinion that if Mr. Sam had not stopped running they would have run him over, and the RBPF would have another case on its hands. I hope that the search for them will be just as elaborate and extensive, and they will be soon found!

  2. From the info we have it seems to be at least an infraction of human decency and manners. Of course we have only one side of the story to the best of my knowledge.

Why was Mr Sam running? He was the night watchman, you would think he would be armed and ready to assert his authority over trespassers and anyone entering the property.

  3. @Moneybrain

You are always on the right side aren’t you.

Are lowly guards in Barbados armed except if they are cash carrying?

  4. I believe that we need to separate the incident involving Mr Sam from the search for the missing lady. Three jackasses of questionable intelligence volunteered to go in search of a missing person and the Redneck could not be restrained and Bubba took over. I doubt very much that their intentions were less than honorable but the adrenaline rush was too much to handle in a cart road late at night under trying circumstances. Who am I to judge? Let the police and the law courts deal with them. The Harris family cannot in all fairness be blamed for this turn of events.

  5. rumor has it that one was bush tea,,the other onions. and the third prodigal .

  6. Interesting…..let the Bajans say what they think…..this will be an eye opener…….let the venom spew forth or the milk of human kindness….

  7. I have no idea that Guards are armed or not. What is the sense of having a guard? Did he have means of quick communication?

Forgive me for not being gullible and jumping on bandwagons like so many on here are prepared to do. I must have been one of the few taught to be skeptical of preliminary info and to appreciate that balancing situations is necessary, when far too many are prepared to charge and convict without thorough evidence.

If these Whiteys are wrong then throw the book at them.

I remember that Goodridge was wrong too in wunna opinion but then we heard that his son was attacked in his own yard by a youngster stealing puppies and that the perp’s Uncle was the Police Sargeant, did anyone pun here apologise for jumping the gun?????????????? NO cause Whitey is always wrong!

I know of situations where my own nephew was harassed by Police while being totally innocent. Plus U once said whites dont shoot at Waterford and my nephew said he shoots at Waterford and that a dark girl was loading a gun there one night and press the trigger when pushing in the magazine nearly killing him. You fellas always know everything without having all the facts.

  8. Guards in Barbados are not armed unless assigned to cash. To repeat.

Note he is referred to as a watchman.

  9. @MoneyBrain March 4, 2015 at 9:24 PM “I have no idea that Guards are armed or not. What is the sense of having a guard? Did he have means of quick communication?”

Dear moneybrainless: Why don’t you ask some of your Bajan landed gentry friends if they provide their watchies with a gun and a smart phone? Report to us once you have the answer.

  10. AS far as i aware the only persons vested with the authority to question anyone whether suspected or not is the police, and this is in instances where it is determined it is believed that useful information can be obtained, these three men obviously were not police officers, and their actions definitely constitutes assault. This situation could have gone horribly wrong, ending in serious bodily harm to watchman SAM, or even his untimely demise, being overly zealous can be dangerous as seen in this matter. There is a saying that a story have two sides but i am inclined to go with watchman Sam’s story as related in the daily news. A phone call was made to the manager of the plantation, he can furnish the police with the relevant information or telephone records can be obtained via the appropriate avenues. These men have committed an unlawful assault and should have to account for their actions.

  11. Why racism is not backed by science

As we harvest ever more human genomes one fact remains unshakeable: race does not exist

Barely a week goes by without some dispiriting tale of racism seeping into the public consciousness: the endless stream of Ukip supporters expressing some ill-conceived and unimaginative hate; football hooligans pushing a black man from a train. I am partly of Indian descent, a bit swarthy, and my first experience of racism was more baffling than upsetting. In 1982, my dad, sister and I were at the Co-op in a small village in Suffolk where we lived, when some boys shouted “Coco and Leroy” at us. Fame was the big hit on telly at the time, and they were the lead characters. My sister and I thought this was excellent: both amazing dancers and supremely attractive: we did bad splits all the way home.

  12. On the night the woman went missing little Johnnie told me “an old woman is missing” I said “really?” and looked at the smart phone and saw that the woman is 49.

I said “49 is not old.”

Little Johnnie replied “49 is old”

But I admit I was not at all concerned. I said to myself probably early Alzheimers or depression.

If Alzheimers her family and/or the police would know to start searching the places where she used to live when she was younger. I did not volunteer because to tell the truth I don’t know any white Bajans well enough to know anything about their childhood, or whether they have a family history of depression and or Alzheimers disease. Because in decades of living in Barbados I have only ever had a single conversation with a white Bajan.

If depression it was/is her responsibility and that of her family to get her into treatment.

I did not at any time think that she had been kidnapped, raped and/or murdered by a man with a big black dickie, although perhaps the rope carrying three white men may have thought so.

So no I am not surprised to hear that rope carrying three white men confronted the innocent Buttals watchie, and that family and or friends of the woman cursed the Nation photographers.

    Ungrateful bastards.

“The Harris family cannot in all fairness be blamed for this turn of events.”

Probably not the Harris Family” but certainly the ‘Harris Woman’ who deliberately refused to keep her “family” aware of her whereabouts and entanglements in a sexual web of lies.
Wouldn’t you refer to the outcome of events as a monumental abuse of scarce resources and a monstrous perversion of “white” privilege in a society still wracked with the lingering scars of slavery and Massa colonial superiority.

Don’t you think the business man and his deceitful consort should be sent a bill setting out the charges incurred in the deployment of taxpayers’ funded State resources?

  14. Perhaps we are beginning to see why, the Police would prefer to call on the assistance of the Defence Force, when conducting such a search operation. Not because of their ability to shoot, or even carry guns, but mainly for their sense of discipline, coupled with the fact that they are more readily available.
When every Tom Dick and Harry are given full range to do as they bloody well , like, we can expect incidents like that which occurred at Buttals. Thank heavens that the lady was found unharmed, if things had otherwise gone drastically wrong, what we would have had is a gaggle of over enthusiastic individuals , mashing up a crime scene, putting more strain on the police investigators. Any such searches should be under the direct supervision of the Police Force.
Given the fact that praedial larceny is so prevalent in Barbados, and appears to be well organised, it stands to reason that the watchman, being approach, in a manner, quite familar and similar to some I ‘ve been involved in during urban military operations, had all cause to fear for his life ,and naturally ran to safe guard himself.
But it leaves one to ask the question, “Who really is in charge of this country?”

  15. wait on BU percetions can be worn like a badge of honour,

how in the hell can the woman be blamed for three KKK attacking a black man. wuh kind of monstrous perversion of logic is that,

  16. However it does worry me that when a girl or woman disappears from home when she is found she is taken directly back home.

This worries me because a girl or woman is MUCH MORE LIKELY to be hurt by the man in the house (the man in the house includes stepfathers, boyfriends, husbands, stepbrothers etc.) that by the outman in the canes.

For every girl and woman who is killed by a man in the canes, dozens more are killed by the man in the house.

For ever girl and woman who is assaulted by a man in the canes, thousands more are assaulted by the man in the house.

I think that whenever a woman or girl goes missing on finding her the Child Care Board should be involved if the person is a minor, and if she is an adult she should be given access to a health professional (read here psychiatrist/psychologist and her family members should NOT be present when she is questioned by the health professional) before she is returned to her family, and if the police do not have such people on staff they should start hiring now.

Because all too often when a girl or woman leaves home THE FAMILY IS THE PROBLEM.

Because all too often when a girl or woman leaves home THE HOME IS THE PROBLEM.

  17. The simple lesson to be learned from this episode. If a “local caucasian” is reported missing, all other ethnic groups should mind your business and let those uneducated “local caucasian” trash look ’bout for their own. Bloody scum!

  18. Why should anyone think that the authorities would ever allow a plantation watchman, or any other watchman for that matter , to be the holder of a licensed firearm? even if the Great House has its private arsenal,as was demonstrated during the big break out from Glendairy, by Hall, Woggie ,Bradshaw during which time they stole some seven pieces of firearms from a single plantation house.
Some businessmen in Barbados find much difficulty in obtaining a firearms license.

  19. @millertheanunnaki March 4, 2015 at 9:57 PM ” entanglements in a sexual web of lies.”

Come on miller etc. What are you smoking?

In my time I have taken a few horns and I’ve given a few too, but NEVER have I told my partner that I was giving a horn, and never has my partner told me that I was getting a horn.

Mostly we find out about horns decades after the fact.

Life is not like the movies when you can sit with your partner and say “darling sweetie I am horning you with Mr/Miss/Mrs X down the road.”

It don’t happen so in real life.

Horribly wrong indeed; especially if the watchman was one uppity nigger called Sambo with a loud mouth and brazen attitude.
If the allegation that these three white vigilantes were in possession of rope is true one can only conclude they were in search of a runaway white sow ‘pig’ in heat looking for a black boar.
Interrogating strangers about the whereabouts of suspected missing person is the province of the police not a bunch of melanin deficient and mentally challenged vigilantes.

  21. Moonshine, St. George where it is alleged that the woman was found with a family “unknown to her or to her family” is a real, real small village and yet the media has not questioned the Monnshiners.

Its not fair to involve the people of this village / tenantry in what appears to be a domestic affair in the plantation great house. Let the Media do their own Pudding and Souse investigation,as Market Vendor is not going to touch this. Heard what the man said, he has big up friends at the Nation.

Don’t you think 2 to 3 hours of randy fun would have been good enough for the Lady in heat? What about arranging a vacation abroad minus husband and family? You know the standard excuse: “Honey I want to be alone for some sexual, sorry, spiritual healing, etc.”
Maybe if there was a male equivalent of Bush Hill such randy bored women could have done want most sexually deprived married men do for 20 minutes or so of commercial pleasure.

I know a lady (sorry Colonel Buggy) who used successfully used that one for years and years.

Regularly she had to go from Friday evening to Sunday morning to a hotel in order to “read her Bible”. Took the poor husband years before he caught on. He was religious too and was only too happy to come to church with her every blessed Sunday morning.

What do you mean, Dear Robert? Don’t you think this round of intellectual masturbation is worth the pleasure?

‘Come’ now it certainly proves that there are definitely two ‘Barbadoeses’.
How else can you explain the deployment of such large State resources in search of a publicly unknown missing woman from a minority ethnic group in search of pleasure and consolation while on the other hand the life of a Minister of the Crown is threatened by two known assailants and announced in Parliament and NO State resources including drones are deployed to catch these potential murderers?

Man where is the justice in all of that? A boldly waste of wanking time I say!

  32. I hope that by now the police have had a conversion with Mr. Sam, and that they have questioned the three white men.

Police we are watching you. We pay you to do your jobs, and we expect you to do your job

  33. Miller:

Maybe the Minister of the Crown did not know where or when he was threatened. On the other hand the missing woman husband knew where, when and with whom she was missing. With all of these knowns, we had to deploy to the fullest extent to find that “missing” white woman!! I reminded of the days when Massa went “missing” in the slave huts. if he took too long all resources were deployed then too!!

Why do we black people in Barbados continue to fool ourselves. The place never “belong” to we!!

    Sherlock Holmes..

The statement given by the family after this lady was found was found was first in conflict with the previous statement that she was at the residence of a family member. Now it was reported that she was dehydrated, to some degree confused and disoriented, having spent the night in a canefield, then made way to a house and of all things remembered her husband’s cell number, i was wondering if she is a diabetic which would account for her probably being in such a state, but then i reasoned that being in such a state overnight might have resulted in a diabetic coma. but then again i am not a medical practitioner. Then there is the complete stranger at whose residence she turned up, i would have thought that the first persons this stranger would have called would be the police, as this would have been a measure to safeguard themselves as this was a matter of such magnitude that kidnapping was being bandied around, then again i could be wrong here again, but my preference would be to call the cops first. Anyway i might just be speculating so i like everybody else will wait and see if an official, official statement will be given.

  35. I, as a white man, searching for a “missing” white woman and come through the bush and see a man looking like Mandingo what ravishing pictures/ thoughts do you think go through my head, especially when Mandingoes are known to be liars, lustful and shiftless.

  36. But why are we kicking up a fuss over the behavior last weekend. Aren’t we the same people who allow these same people for ages to block off our highways, and access to some villages in the name of Rallying, and we stand in our thousands on the roadsides cheering them on?

  37. Three men against an unarmed man in any situation it’s always best not to play hero, however, the black man in Barbados has always been a pussy when confronted by white people in any situation. How many times in the last ten years I’ve watched black men in Barbados go to such extreme over simple silly shit once it involved another like himself. How many women have been chopped to their death in the past few years by men, now this schmuck runs to the media crying after he failed to kick ass and take names.
Dont blame the white guys people, we blacks refuse to stop acting like village monkeys.

  38. @ David /Bu
That Watchman , who he ? please check

  39. I am wondering what are the younger people’s views on these goings ons. We stay here and crucify the Israelis for their actions in Gaza and the West Bank. We castigate the American police for shooting down young black me. And the list goes on. But right here in our backyard we have allowed the seeds of Redneckness, the most dangerous tool used against black people in the United States, to grow and mature, like marijauna. These younger ones are utterly confused . After almost a decade of so-called Independence , we still appear to be spinning top in mud, believing that we are Firm Craftsmen Of Our Fate. Is it any wonder that disillusioned young, men and women, are now beginning to gravitate towards the more extremist groups?

So MB for what other reason would three white men in the middle of the night be armed with rope? Certainly not to rekindle Willie Lynch past-time.

Isn’t rope used in rural settings to tie or tether animals or to recover those gone astray? Certainly you wouldn’t want me to say ‘to restrain a white hen being chased by a black cock’? Sometimes it is safer to be a yard-fowl than a wild bird. You get my drift?

  49. this is one stupid article. i was hugely embarrassed reading what that watchman said. first thing, why would he leave the safety of his hut when he had every right to be there? the men spotted a searchlight and he like an ass turned off his, why? then he ups and decided foolishly to run, when the best thing would have been to stay put. Now look at the scenario. the white men are looking for there friend, the watchman see 3 white men and started panicking because of the stories he read of our history. which btw were mostly true. so he gets scared run and the white think right away he has something to hide. does he really think that they would have lynched him? how stupid is Barbadian society?

we all know that this story is much more than is being said. the lady’s relatives would have to have to tell the police something serious enough for them to bring out drones, BDF etc. it seems quite obvious to me that they had reason to believe she was kidnapped and told that to the police. this has little to do with race but to think that that watchman could have acted so stupidly just shows how much that black/white, slave/master mentality is still perpetuated in Barbados
