Christmas in Barbados
Christmas in Barbados

The Christian festival of Christmas is the time of the year Barbadians join many across the globe to become immersed in the spirit of the season.  Psychiatrist suggests human beings need ways to relieve stress. Whether Christian or Infidel the season is used to promote frivolity, show kindness; reach out to the less fortunate, spread good cheer. The decision by the minister of finance to issue a ministerial statement on Tuesday – if media reports are to be believed – begs the question to what extent politicians are willing to ignore tradition and long standing value positions for the sake of political expediency. Apologists may retort this is not a budget debate and therefore the public will be spared the palavering by members of parliament that has made Barbados into the laughing stock for those who force themselves to follow proceedings in recent years.

The Governor of the Central Bank Delisle Worrell hinted a couple weeks ago the Minister of Finance will have something to tell Barbadians, the time will be on Tuesday 16 December 2014. All the economic indicators point to the fact the message by the Minister of Finance will not be tidings of great joy.

After six years of poor economic performance many Barbadians appear to be losing confidence and hope in the government to lead the country on a growth path. What has not help to discourage public concern is the latest tantrum by Minister of Agriculture David Estwick.  It is not unusual for a minister of the government to disagree with  policy. What is unusual is for a minister of government to break the collective of cabinet by voicing public dissent and NOT resign. Even more unusual has been the unwillingness of Prime Minister Freundel Stuart to censure Estwick. The Days of Our Lives imbroglio has made a mockery of government and has served as a long running distraction to the many problems affecting the affairs of state.

The current state of affairs encourages partisan positions to be drawn but sensible Barbadians must be concerned at the inability of the government to energise a once proud nation to change, to fight! A photograph of Caricom leaders who attended a heads of Caricom meeting in Trinidad a few weeks ago reinforced the truth that a picture is worth a thousand words.  Nowhere was Prime Minister Stuart of Barbados featured. There were the HOGs of Trinidad, St. Kitts, Antigua…

Whether BLP or DLP here is the reality. It is mid December and the majority of Barbadians have not received tax refunds. Many of the roads in Barbados are in a bad state of repair. Many districts have to be happy with once a month garbage pickup. The CLICO matter remains unresolved. The Paradise (Four Seasons) issue remains outstanding. Barrack we are not sure. Several houses built by former minister Michael Lashley are in a bad state and will have to be rebuilt. The Private Public Partnership at Coverly has become an embarrassment and eyesore. Six years later we wait for the operationalizing of transparency legislation. The Attorney General promised  new domestic legislation in the first quarter of 2014, we are quickly approaching first quarter 2015. BU can easily list 15 more outstanding issues and many do not require financial resources to implement.

Barbadians will take time out of their Christmas routine to listen to Minister of Finance Christopher Sinckler. Some wonder if the message will prove to be the straw which breaks the camel’s back.

  1. Let’s hope that this problem in the Judiciary is fixed as soon as possible to prevent more of the below problems. Exactly what do lawyers in Barbados.

The Barbados Association of Medical Practitioners (BAMP) would do well to consider adopting stricter guidelines as it concerns their medical doctors being registered and practicing in Barbados for a minimum of 3 years before they are considered by others or consider themselves medical experts and can attempt to give “expert medical opinions” in the supreme courts of Barbados.

These guidelines should include doctors who are allowed by immigration to practice medicine on the island. These measure would prevent insurance companies from exploiting new doctors and using them to manipulate the court system. Residing in Barbados for only 12 months does not cut it and an orthopedist agreeing to examine a neurology patient at the request of CGI insurance sounds very much like, and has all the hallmarks of a dishonest and unethical doctor. A complaint was made to BAMP about this new doctor.

Doing so would also preven this:

Chief Justice Marston Gibson is well aware, or should be, of the unfair and unethical practice of dishonest doctors being allowed, and have been for many years, to tesitify before a Judge in this capacity:

A heart specialist should not be, but is allowed to testify for insurance companies about the brain injuries of a patient/claimant who has no history of or current heart problems, while the heart specialist has no training or experience in neurology.

A chiropractor is allowed to tesify for insurance companies about the injuries of amputee claimaint, even though the amputee has no chiropractic problems and the chiropractor is clueless about orthopedics.

No doctor worth his or her salt would even consider referring a neurology patient/claimant to an orthopedist, UNLESS that patient also has orthopedic issues OR the orthopedist is also a neurologist..Why? because they are all separate and distinct discipline in the medical field, but in Barbados, the insurance companies are still ALLOWED to pretend a doctor, is a doctor, is a doctor, the court system still goes along with that because the judiciary NEVER bothered to stay abreast of the times by updating their rules and guidelines as it pertains to doctors and their specific disciplines: so, the insurance companies can still pay an orthopedist to go before a judge in the supreme court to lie and deceive to her heart’s content and create medical mischief by testifying againg the claimaint about the patient’s neurological despite the fact that the neurology injuries despite the fact that the neurology paitent has no orthopedic injuries and the clueless, testifying orthopedist has no knowledge, experience or training in neurology and has only been allowed by immigration to practice in Barbados for the last 12 months, Naturally, the orthopedist will testify wholeheartedly and lyingly that there is NOTHING wrong with the neurology patient, because she is not a neurologist.

The fact that BAMP updated their guidelines years ago and started referring patients to doctors who speicialize in the patient’s specific medical ailments has been ignored by the judiciary, the Judge, not being a doctor would be unaware of the conspiracy between doctor and insurance company and insurance company. The Judge is therefore still following antiquated guideline fo the court and frustrating the claimants and their attorneys in the process. Updating the system to reflect the referral system BAMP implemented where doctors only refer patients to other doctors trained and and experienced in the discipline specific to the patient’s medical condition and should only the ones to speak of that patient’s medical condition in a court of law.

The court system was left behind to be exploited by the very greedy. That’s around the same time Harris and Simmons created their love fest to exploit that massive loophole for personal gain at the expense of suffering and injured people: that’s when Simmons magically slithered onto the board of directors at CGI, making absolutely sure the loophole was never closed and creating a conflict of interest by still sitting in the supreme court as Chief Justice. Bajans tend to not notice these thing, but I have the dates and so does Corporate Affairs, it’s public knowledge.

………….assbackward does not even begin to describe this unethical and unfair practice. The rules and guidelines in the judiciary should be updated to make this practice a criminal offense, given the amount of years it has been exploited, again, these are all different medical disciplines and should be treated as such by the justice system. How does anything esle even make any sense. Even with my vivid imagination, I would be hard-pressed to make up this stuff, but I can count any number of human rights violations that can be attributed to this very vicious and brutal practice. Time to close the loophole, they can and do literally cost lives and great suffering for patients/claimants…..but ask Harris if he cares, he stays accumulating weath with the loophole in place.

If BAMP can recognize each medical discipline/specialization as separate and distinct, and they do, I have checked, why cant’ the judiciary? There is no longer any excuse, Simmons the slug is no longer Chief Justcie, it does not take a brain surgeon to make the changes. Over to you Justice Gibson. If they had changed their guidelines after Thompson got rid of Simmons and a new CJ confirmed, I would not now have to expose the loophole, the transition would have been in place years ago.

As i stated some weeks ago, how much information i continue to put in the public domain, depends entirely on how much more times CGI/Harris uses to disrespectfully and unnecessarily waste the court’s time. He knows exactly of what i speak. Harris could continue this explotiation of the court system for another 25 years until he is old, gray and too tired to continue. I can keep this outflow of information going for a very long time.

BTW…I firmly believe doctors in Barbados who take money from insurance companies and agree to examine claimants outside of their specific medical discipline, training, knowledge and experience and outside of the patient’s medical injuries; testifying before a judge with malice, deceit, lies and greed in their hears, telling lies about the patient’s severe internal injuries that cannot be seen with the naked eye, just because CGI has convinced them that they are covered by a legal loophole; should be exposed, named and shamed for the people of Barbados and the Caribbean to know that they are dishonest and unethical doctors. They have crossed an ethical line, that’s the bottom line when you are a bottom feeder. Exposure for these evil intentions are not covered by any legal loopholes, not when one knows, as I how to do so creatively, I have no problems and all the tools required to splash that information across North America.

Immigration also needs to step up and set some new guideline about inexperienced new doctors to Barbados allowed to practice and involving themselves in contentious matters a mere 12 months after arriving on the island or as soon as they arrive, there should be a 3 year waigting period for this…it’s now to easy for new doctors to breeze into Barbados and waltz around doing as they please, small wonder that it takes them no more than 12 months to involve themselves with shady/dodgy insurance companies. More serious vetting and rigorous background checks should be implemented.

It’s well known that in the US there are brilliant brain surgeons and other equally brilliant doctors who drive taxicabs and do other menial labor for a living, some as long as 10 years, as long as you are newly arrived, you have to start over, don’t care how experience or trained you considered yourself before entering the US. Doctors who are allowed to practice in Barbados should be appreciative that they are not subjected to this treatment

Like with the proof i currently have available about the orthopedist, just wait until I have proof available that CGI/Harris et al have bribed any false witnesses to give ‘eyewitness testimony” and tell lies before a judge, perjuring themselves in the process. Just wait until i am given that ammunition in my hands by CGI, and I will get the opportunity, they cannot help themselves, been taking advantage for way too long.

  2. Should read, exactly what do lawyers in Barbados do that they cannot spot loopholes….steupss

  3. @Artax

You neglected to include in your analysis that Dr. Frank Alleyne has warned that our economy has structural issues that must be corrected and these issues were around before 2008.

  6. David while I accept your theory that Bajans will spend any savings on imported goods can you tell me what happens to the money that will be saved from falling crude oil prices?

  7. @Hants

We can only speculate but one reason would be to stabilise cash flow.

  8. Once again we can only “guess”.

No FOI, no Integrity Legislation………In Government we trust.

  9. Fiscal responsibilty should not start with a crisis ,but with a demand and a dependancy on years of proper planning for uneventual happenings and occurences hitting our doorsteps..proof being shown now and lack of by the past blp govt. When a failure occurs because of policies that are unsustainable for long term no one is exempt and policies need to correct are unavoidable and are usually felt hardest by the most vulnerables

Failure cannot be hidden for very long.

  11. @ David you should read “Wild Coot” in Nationnews.

    Very interesting .

  14. was it not the loud mouth critics of the BLP who criticize the govt for making a bold move of having sandals being a part of bajanism , bsuch an enterprise which by all means and and criteria is a brand that is well known internationally and has met credible and sufficient standards based on its merit achievements and accomplishments and therefore worthy of the concessions granted,,,,

    ………………………………………………………………………………………………………..
Government has also done all that it could to stimulate the private sector and revive the tourism Industry. The consessions which were offered to Sandals we heavily criticised and chastised by the opposition and some sectors of the private sector. However, we can see today the benefit of allowing the Sandals brand to set up in Barbados. Many eager Barbadians will be anxiously hoping to be employed at the new property when it is reopened in January 2015

  15. ac
If Barbados represented the jews and the DLP represented the nazis and Barbados was being put into the gas chambers by the DLP, you would still find a way to say something good about both DLP and Barbados.

“You neglected to include in your analysis that Dr. Frank Alleyne has warned that our economy has structural issues that must be corrected and these issues were around before 2008.”

Point taken David, it’s a very good observation and it brings to the fore some very pertinent questions about the ability of this current DLP administration.

    @ ac | December 15, 2014 at 11:54 AM |

“Fiscal responsibilty should not start with a crisis ,but with a demand and a dependancy on years of proper planning for uneventual happenings and occurences hitting our doorsteps….”

You could not want a more accurate statement than the above.

Obviously, any opposition worth its “salt” would have a team in place to “shadow” the ministry of finance and stay abreast of current economic data. Dr. Frank Alleyne, and by extension David Estwick, were members of the DLP’s “shadow ministry of economics” team while that party spent 14 years in opposition. Note, the DLP would have been privy to information relative to what the BLP did during their tenure, since policies would have been debated in parliament. As such, the DEMS should have used this 14 year period to monitor this island’s economic performance, and formulate alternative policies if, in their opinion, the BLP were taking the wrong path.

Additionally, signs of the current protracted economic crisis were evident prior to the announcement of the 2008 general election. The DEMS had 14 years to monitor this island’s economic performance, and as such, they had ample time to develop “years of proper planning for uneventful happenings and occurrences hitting our doorsteps”.

What is crucial to this debate is if the DLP was either proactive or reactive in their approach to governance. If their economic team was actually working, had the confidence they would have won the 2008 election and actually had the interest of Barbadians at heart, they would have informed the party an economic recession was imminent, considered the inadequacies of the BLP’s economic policies and develop alternative policies to better combat the recession.
Hence, judging from their performance so far, we no choice but to conclude the DLP has not been proactive.

I have taken the liberty to revise the above statement.

Hence, judging from their performance so far, we have no choice but to conclude the DLP did not have a clue about what to do when they took the reins of Government in 2008. And judging from everything that they have done so far, it is evident that they have not learnt anything yet.

There was a news item on CBC TV news tonight that Chris Sinckler will be delivering a Ministerial Statement on the Economy during the HoA session tomorrow. I didn’t hear any specific time mentioned.

Wonder why they were so coy about whether the statement was indeed on or off while, in the process, misdirecting the country re. an important statement that could affect most of us? I wonder what Donville Inniss’ take now is on the political utility of the statement.

…. and where is the PM in all this?

  25. @ Caswell Franklyn
I read all blogs because even the ignorant have a say ,and I may learn

I wonder if the story in the weekend Barbados Today about BRA recommending the drastic slashing of the zero rated VAT list is the beginning of Barbados having to operate somewhat like Cuba and some other countries where there is a distinct enforced demarcation of products for tourists with forex and lesser products for nationals?

Will we be at the beginning of seeing Supermarkets provisioned more like the 1960’s than the 2000’s?

On the face of it the suggestion looks very good but could it lead eventually, especially considering the concessions recently given to Sandals and the other hotels, to two different Barbadoses.

I wonder if Sinckler will be addressing this tomorrow?

Well, of course Sir. In fact, we are already there. Those who pay tax through the nose, then those who earn a lot, don’t declare it, because they are not on PAYE and then the foreign wealthy (nothing against those, they bring foreign exchange and spending).

    There are thus three Barbados’s.

One for the wukkers like you and me, who support evvyting. Then those who pocket their cash and laugh at us, then the foreigners who go about spending at restaurants, oblivious to the other two Barbados’s (they think there is only one other).

Need to dump direct taxation and put VAT to 20% and ENFORCE collection, HUGE fines for those who don’t pay their VAT. Like 25% of undeclared earnings.

Audit all businesses, large and small operators.

  38. @ All

“it is all in the sleight of hand”

three card men use the trick of verbal misdirection and rapid repositioning of your card to seduce the gullible viewer/constituent as to where the right card is.

Manifestos of both of our political parties represent the card which their slick talkers and relatively fast hands (relative to the sluggardly population of Bulbados) continue to deceive the electorate every five years

The solution that we seek is really quite simple, to stop the card games and to demand credentials that, unlike those of the former CEO at the Barbados Cricket Association, are verified, prior to us electing the fraudsters again and then wondering why we are being fvcked.

We have four years at worst of this ineptitude to craft a system where new visionaries can offer themselves for scrutiny to the population.

Let men (with balls) or women (with pudendas) and not vice versa submit their names, or be submitted for examination under a “Save and Serve” Barbados banner that will commence very simply with a blank template/website where functions/posts of a government are described and detailed, optimal constructs are proposed and finally, names of persons with pictures are submitted for people to see and comment.

A student with a baccalaureate in politics could easily provide a template for the SSB and our Blogmaster could certainly enlist a programmer to design the webpage

The query would be how does one not attract BLP nor DLP agents and operatives but, given the mess we are faced with, we have to bring alternatives other than what we have

We have to do something or this system of alternative incompetence will kill us as sure as day follows night

  39. @PUDRYR

BU is aware of a group of young bright Barbadian professionals who want to contribute but are turned off by the cesspool they would have to wade through called politics. Enuff will say it is the only way a civic minded Bajan will influence change.

You’re getting there! The default font size is now better and the general layout is also better.

I think a return to the original background colours and a tweaking of the font colours is all that is now necessary to inaugurate a new and improved 2015 BU blog.

This yard-fowl always on BU preaching to us about being “committed to all things Barbados” and continuing “the good fight to do whatever is right! proper! and necessary to put country first and on a sustainable path”.

I wonder if this nut case has ever preached this hypocrisy to members of this current DLP administration. Let us discuss a bit about being “committed to things Barbados.”
The minister of health wants Barbadians to believe the QEH is the premier health care institution in Barbados. How does Boyce plan to inspire the confidence within us to commit to the hospital when he and his colleagues opt to seek the services of North American hospitals even when they have a slight ailment?
How do Ronald Jones want us to have faith in Barbados’ education system, he and his fellow political friends opt to send their children to attend universities in Europe and North America?
What signal of commitment is Stuart sending to me when continues to ignore the cries of the masses, by refusing to speak to us about serious matters concerning this island?
How can any right thinking Barbadian remain committed to Sinckler as MoF, when he has been a colossal failure to date?

How can this ass licking DLP yard fowl expect us to “continue the good fight to do whatever is right and proper”, when we see DLP operatives being allowed to charge $766,855.24 for legal services that were previously done for $17,000 and not face any reprimand?

What more sacrifices can those retrenched former public sector employees can be asked to make, when they made the ultimate sacrifice of losing their jobs and having to fight desperately to receive their severance payments, while the former Beautify Barbados and NCC workers are still awaiting theirs?

How can these former employees and those to be retrenched soon, expect “to put country first and on a sustainable path”, when they see the sacrifice they were forced to make, [and against the background that this is the largest cabinet in the history of Barbados] has assisted this administration in keeping their losing candidates, Irene Sandiford-Garner, Jeptar Ince, Patrick Todd, Hanesley Benn and Harcourt Husbands employed?

Are you saying those former workers who have been made to suffer at the hands of this inept administration “should not be bogged down in self pity and aversion”, when they can’t get severance payments, children can’t go to university, losing their homes has become a reality when they can’t pay the mortgage, no hope of being re-employed or can’t enjoy the same Christmas you are so anxiously awaiting, when Husbands, Ince, Todd, Benn and Sandiford-Garner and their families continue to grow fat, because of the road these workers “travelled giving of sacrifices to keep this country strong one”?

Why should a former Drainage Unit employee not feel self pity and aversion, knowing he worked hard cleaning the mess from the drains to avert flooding, only to end up losing his job, while a man like Partick Todd could get on a platform, talk shiite, lose his seat and still get a senator pick?

All that shiite you does write pun BU does not conform to reality.

  50. Looking good!
