While I can see the attraction of corporate Barbados offering Caribbean cruises as competition prizes or sales inducements, it is difficult to accept what if any real benefit the country gleans from the exercise. Payment almost certainly would ultimately be made in foreign currency (FX) to ship operators who legally avoid any significant taxation and largely employ extra regional crew.

We have been heartened at the initial response to recent launch of re-DISCOVER REWARDS vouchers by local companies, especially as many of those who have responded are looking at it from a national perspective. These businesses have made a considered decision to help protect Barbadian jobs, whether directly in the hospitality industry or sub-sectors like agricultural, food and wine distribution. Many of the participating restaurants have also made a conscious effort to use locally available produce which again helps retain the FX and hopefully spread earned revenue right across the society.

While not wanting to use this column for propaganda or promotion, I just wonder how many people have figured out that this initiative is, to the best of my belief, absolutely unique across the Caribbean. It is a point that has not gone unnoticed by both our tourism planners and potential visitors to Barbados. It was truly heart warming to receive a social media posting from a professor in Canada recently, who stated that one of the deciding factors why they chose us over another Caribbean island was the fact they could eat every night of their stay at a different affordable restaurant, even over a three week stay.

Part of the battle is persuading the yet to be convinced various dining establishments to understand the concept.  As with all businesses, there are fixed costs regardless of the number of customers. The first ten patrons per night at a set menu price perhaps will not be the most profitable, but they help negate those otherwise irrecoverable overheads.

Speaking to a number of the participating restaurateurs it is also clear that the offer is tempting many more people out to eat and several are returning days or weeks later. As reservations are essential it is also very easy for each establishment to revenue control the number of diners taking up the offer or enticing them into early evening bookings, proving an opportunity of enhanced table usage. None of this is rocket science, but if properly managed it can make a vast difference in profitability and maintaining improved customer service.

The other ‘bonus’ is seeing the customer ratings of the dining partners rise on social media sites like TripAdvisor, as they have in several cases. For sure, first time visitors to Barbados, especially those on limited budgets, compare past patrons personal experiences and the level of satisfaction.

Higher ratings are not only earned by selecting degrees of service quality, ambiance and product offering, but also by the volume and frequency posted onto the site. So if comments are not current, the danger is that a particular restaurant will be overtaken by another.

So now you look to invest in ships? Boats?
For reasons only to you , seem you have a plan to put money in people pockets to be spend by you or on the island ,
We know you dont care about Barbados only what you can get from it,
The people on the island need good places to live and other things they can afford.
No Nations or off shore Banks is not fool enough to invest on and Island dealing in cover up and fraud, Buying time with money to fool people they feel are stupid,
We see you dont give or think about the land fraud , As said before , better check where you are , make as much as you can until the law shows up,
Think about the people and the people will take care of you,

  3. Yes ! adrian it was a hit,,,i am happy for u, the hoteliers well some of them are happy for you ! David BU and the clan is happy YOU,,
…………………………………………………………………………………………………………………. so now what is the problem according to your article there is a problem

Part of the battle is persuading the yet to be convinced various dining establishments to understand the concept.
………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….just maybe the “unconvinced” maybe concerned about maintaining a certain level of quality and high standard and have already been convinced that they might be incapable of doing so..furthermore there might be a concern ( a valid one }greater profitability margin might not make much of difference even though the customer volume had increased however areas vital to quality had increase in workload ,an increase in the purchasing of food product and a larger payroll and the return in cash has not moved significantly.

  4. Who witnessed the old fridges and other garbage pulled from gullies and beaches on the weekend? We are a nasty people.

  5. David up here we dutifully sort our garbage, keep it in the garage for 2 weeks and put it out for pick up.
Large items are picked up once a month
Once a week they pick up the compostable waste.

Now I wonder if Barbados had an efficient SSA with structured timely service…..Would Bajans still be nasty>

  6. hants why don;t u get off your royal can and come down to barbados and teach people how to do all them things your are so good at like planting food and picking up garbage.

  7. @Hants

With the Waste to Energy plant on the cards there will be no place for the recyclers because the country will not have enough garbage to burn.

  8. my two favouirte choices on the rediscover list are accra deck and seaescape,,

  9. David I was just making the point that we Bajans living in Canada had to change our habits and obey the rules but it is easy when there is a reliable structured garbage pick up service.

I have a gut feeling that there will be no Waste to Energy plant in Barbados.

What is the latest from the Chaill-Barbados website? Don’t expect to hear from the minister responsible.

  11. There is very little meaningful information on the Cahill website.

  12. to show my love for barbados i am shutting down all my sites that describe the truth about barbados as i know the season is coming and Mr Adrian dont get it anyway.good luck.

  13. Based on a Barbados Today report, the BHTA will have to wait another month for concessions just like the bursaries promised by Minister Jones. Is there any reason why an emergency session of parliament could not be called a few weeks ago to get the amendment to the law through?

    @ David | September 27, 2014 at 5:05 AM |

Maybe the gravamen of the fiscal impact has now sank home. The government can ill afford to forego tax revenues through further concessions at this stage of its fiscal adjustment programme under the watchful eyes o the IMF.
Neither the tax concessions nor the bursaries were factored into revenue projections in the current year Estimates. For the tax concessions on food and beverages to the hotel sector to be implemented alternative sources of tax revenues would have to be identified in the upcoming budget to fill the void. What’s therefore on the alternative tax replacement table? Increase road taxes? Increase excise tax on motor fuels? Increases in ‘Sin’ taxes? What about a special levy on all processed food items?

  15. @Miller

You are probably correct because it was only a few days ago the MoF assured one of its more important stakeholders his ministry would issue a letter in lieu of amendments to be concluded when the House reconvenes in October. It makes you wonder where the mney from UCAL will come.
