Former Prime Minister, Owen Arthur, M.P.
Former Prime Minister, Owen Arthur, M.P., Independent

The unusual decision by a fourteen year prime minister to resign his forty three year membership in the Barbados Labour Party (BLP) and to sit as an Independent continues to create ripples across the political landscape of Barbados. Further, the decision for him to sit on the government side โ€“ and on the frontbench no less โ€“ has only added oomph to the political debate.ย  Not too long ago DLP talking heads were making political capital of Arthurโ€™s reluctance to debate in a parliament he described as porakey. Predictably we have another politician who has exposed chameleon behaviour probably motivated by an undeclared political objective. Arthurโ€™s inability to serve his party in the twilight of his career must be recorded as a failure of leadership on his part. What message does it send to the society when a political leader of longstanding is unable to reconcile issues to the benefit of the party. Unlike many BU believes Arthur has done his legacy irretrievable harm.

The posturing by prime minister Freundel Stuart on the day Arthur resigned from the BLP has provided insight to the Machiavellian machinations by the actors involved – there is more in the mortar than the pestle as far as this matter is concerned. Even the garrulous minister of financeย  wasย  halting in his comment when asked if consideration will be given to accommodate Arthur in an advisory role.ย  He said yes.

Less than two years ago Owen Seymour Arthur was the man the Democratic Labour Party (DLP) loved to hate. A former DLP political strategist admitted the strategy in the last election was to shine a light on all of Arthurโ€™s skeletons secreted in many closets, and it worked.ย  Who can forget the attack advertisements and vicious lampooningย  of Arthur on social media.ย  In the last two weeks we have witnessed how members of the political class on the government side have comfortably shifted political rhetoric in the name of political expediency.

Those Barbadians who up to now have blindly followed politicians should take careful note of our political class and where THEIR loyalty is located. The scenario playing out is a case study that defines a local politician. Political class indeed!

There is something distasteful about a former prime minister of fourteen years and a member of a political party for forty three deciding to resign and to end his political career as an independent. Then again we have to wait to see if Arthur can resist tossing political barbs at Mia Motley.ย ย  Lest we forget it was Arthur who told Mia Mottley on a political platform at Haggatt Hall during the last campaign, โ€˜I have important work for you to doโ€™. Did someone say political expediency?

The Barbados Constitution does not recognise political parties and therefore members of parliament are free to do as Arthur as done. Arthur was elected to serve on a BLP ticket and BU is of the view the Constitution should be amended to prevent the political prostitution we are witnessing by Arthurโ€™s decision to become an Independent. When Clyde Mascoll held his nose to switch sides our opinion was the same. Has Arthur lodged a little dagger in the back of Mascoll as a result of his decision?

About the decision by Arthur and all others who orchestrated his seating arrangement in the House. BU listened with amusement to George Griffith, Wendell Callender et al proffering a defence of the seating decision, suggesting a former prime minister should be accorded respect . Given how Arthur had been singled out by the government side during debates to be vilified while he was a sitting BLP member and prime minister, and in turn, Arthur labelling of parliament as porakey, BU recognises their porakey PR effort .

@ David [not BU]..to your last post about what was very well explained…not so long ago you fretted about Plantation Deeds saying the same thing all the time. Did you stop to think that perhaps the reason that Owen is forced to continue this so called disservice is based on the element of SELFINCRIMINATION? Show me the clean hands that hold the rails leading into our parliament, and I’ll show you a liar!

โ€œo.k David we feel your pain,,and there is plenty truth in the article,,,,,,However in my humble opinionโ€ฆit comes a time when enemies must cease fire and reconcile ,,,leaving the darkness behind and projecting an image of goodwill towards each other with objectives that will benefit ,the article does not paint a good picture of a past political climate that was selfserving and fueled and propelled by self interest,,any how going forward we must not genuflect to such a past and hold it at such a level that we cannot move beyond to seek a better future even if it calls for peace with one or all of our enemies,,,,,,lets not be petty and vindictive ,but rather move the bar at its highest level and in the right direction to help us met the desired objectives, that calls for resolution.โ€

This is a very Interesting politically motivated contribution, filled with the usual party political โ€œspinโ€ on the discussion. I use โ€œthe writerโ€ here with caution, because the more I read this contribution, the more Iโ€™m inclined to believe Donville Inniss is the author of this particular โ€œACโ€ post.
Essentially, this individual is anticipating Owen Arthur joining forces with the DLP and is putting forward a case for him to do so, by suggesting he and the DLP should โ€œcease fire and reconcileโ€, โ€œleaving the darkness behind and project an image of goodwill towards each other with objectives that will benefit……..โ€ [Typical Donville Inniss rhetoric].
This comes against the background of the attacks on Arthurโ€™s character, integrity and legacy as prime minster during the 2008 and 2013 general election campaigns by the DLP, and subsequently in parliament over the past 6 years. As such, Arthur is being told โ€œlet us bury the hatchet, forget the past and โ€˜not be petty and vindictive, but rather move the bar at its highest level and in the right direction to help us meet the desired objectivesโ€™……..โ€

Conversely, the author could have concluded that Arthurโ€™ actions within the BLP to date and his subsequent resignation from the party โ€œwere self-serving and fuelled and propelled by self-interestโ€, causing a strained relationship between him, Mottley and some other members of the organisation. Therefore, Arthur should not be โ€œnot be petty and vindictiveโ€ in an effort not to destroy the very institution that paved the way for him excelling to become prime minister of Barbados. He should seek โ€œresolutionโ€ with the party and in going forward he โ€œmust not genuflect to such a past and hold it at such a level that we cannot move beyond to seek a better future even if it calls for peace with one or all of his enemiesโ€ and โ€œshould move the bar at its highest level and in the right direction to help the BLP meet the desired objectives…….โ€

  3. @Caswell

George Griffith’s explanation how Owen met Tom differs with yours.

  4. What’s wrong with changing your support for a party, if by doing so it benefit the party? It has happened numerous times before and continues to happen in the world of politics, but probably not in Barbados because some here are making a big deal of it. The late US President Ronald Reagan, was a deadhard support of the Democratic Party and even supported a woman’s right to choose, which is in direct opposition to the Republican Party ideology.

It seems Dr. Belle agrees with the general view we have of Arthur. In essence he realized after the muni tax march that Mottley had greater support and by his move he has positioned himself as an option down the road if Mia falters.

Most of Owenโ€™s skeletons are no longer in the closet. I for one believe in the forgiveness of sins but first you must confess. If the sins are brought to the fore by someone other than the sinner, the political career of the person would tend to take a blow. Arthurโ€™s trump card seems to be that he knows of Miaโ€™s โ€œsinsโ€ and appears to be threatening premature release before she lands at Illaro Court. That is why Owen appears to be dangerous and also why all of Miaโ€™s minions have gone into attack mode, leaving Mia to say: not me, I did not have a unkind word to say about Owen (publicly).@@@

  10. He sits as an Independent now. How many would have to join him from the D camp and the B camp in order for them to approach the GG and ask that he swear in a new Government? Care to hazard a guess as to the names of those willing to walk? How about speculating on which wealthy businesses or businessmen would be willing to back this third party financially. What would the return on investment be for those financiers? I’d bet that there are some businessmen who are not happy with how things are going currently and I’ll bet that some in Parliament aren’t happy with the legacy that they are being forced to be a part of. What better way to still get your pension and appear to be doing the right thing. What better way to diss MAM, FS and the Minister of F(allure)?

  11. An hour into the program and so far the โ€œtalking headsโ€ have it, just rambling along with only 2 calls from the public.

  14. @ David.
    Firstly, great article.
The BU “Critics” of negative campaigns sometimes contend that negative blogs are not always used for the stated reason. In some cases, these negative bloggers presents twisted or spun information under the guise of bringing hidden negatives into the light. Sometimes those who practice negative blogging and publicity also denounce the approach when used against their side by telling the attacker to be nice, be civil, stay clean, be positive, not hurt others, not get personal, not to scare people. It’s obvious the man can do as he wishes, blod move.

  18. Interesting point about classism at work in the BLP, Bajans have always felt that the BLP was the Party of the Conservatives which is representative of the Mercantile and Upper Class and those aspiring to reach those heights. Classism is never far from the surface in Barbados and politics is no exception but it also extends to other fields e.g. cricket, the Old Spartan Club was seen as a โ€œBlack teamโ€ but it only accepted โ€œBlacksโ€ from a certain strata of society which led to the formation of Empire which accepted working class people from all backgrounds.

The BLP circa 1950-1970 seemed to only accept โ€œLeadersโ€ and members from certain backgrounds so perhaps that legacy has not been abandoned.

  19. @Sargeant

Agree and it is why a DLP government historically struggles to win full private sector buy in.

A Simple response: We the people understand that political loyalties lie in “what is in it for me.” It has always been so, it will always be so. It is not a particularly Bajan thing. Human beings are selfish, greedy and opportunistic. Always have been. Always will be. For ever and ever. Amen.

@BU David “There is something distasteful about a former prime minister of fourteen years and a member of a political party for forty three deciding to resign and to end his political career as an independent.

A Simple response: I find nothing distasteful in Owen’s resignation. I don’t consider it to be an act of political prostitution. To say he shouldn’t resign is like saying a couple who has been married for 50 years should not divorce. Typically indeed they should not divorce, but circumstances alter cases, and rarely a divorce, even a divorce after a long, happy and successful marriage is the VERY BEST THING that can happen to the marriage. I say let the couple decide. Do not compel them to remain married. Do not forbid them a divorce.

@BU David ” BU is of the view the Constitution should be amended to prevent the political prostitution we are witnessing by Arthurโ€™s decision to become an Independent.”

A Simple response: David I use my analogy above again. It is like saying that we should amend the constitution to say that couples who have been married for 43 years (or 25, or 50, or 70) should be forbidden to get a divorce. I say let the couple decide. Do not compel them to remain married. Do not forbid them a divorce. I say let Owen decide. Owen should never be compelled to remain a member of the BLP or of any party.

I have nothing for or against, Owen, Mia, the DLP nor the BLP, but I strongly believe in liberty.

Let Owen decide what is in his own best interest.

    DO NOT FORBID HIM.

  29. @Simple

Don’t be simple, the debate taking place is about the implications of his decision on the political landscape of Barbados and not whether he has the right to x of y.

The mention of T&T was a response to Sargeant to make the point other countries have addressed the issue of crossing the floor in our region. For your info our transparency legislation which is stuck somewhere models the T&T and a couple other countries. Of late Barbados has been following a lot lately.

OSA’s challenges lie not in the HoA but in the eyes of the electorate.
He is now a politically spent force.
Any going back on his word to make this his last time representing the people of St. Peter would make him look like a castrated jackass.

  31. @David August 9, 2014 at 10:45 PM “What is puzzling is the fact Arthur did not resign his seat.”

And why should he resign from the St. Peter seat? So far as I am aware Owen and the good, decent hard-working people of St Peter have had no quarrel, no disagreements. The good decent hard-working people of St. Peter elected him, and he should stay until the end of his term or until the good decent hard-working people of St. Peter makes it clear that they want him to go?

Maybe Owen is sick and tired of the BLP and its current leadership (and note that I have nothing against the BLP or its current leadership) but it may well be that he has nothing against the good decent hard-working people of St. Peter, and they have nothing against him.

So why separate himself from the people of St. Peter/

  32. @Miller

As Dr. Belle pointed out Arthur may yet be recalled if Mia cannot demonstrate she is able to control her gang which has nothing to do with her capacity as a politician. It is possibly his last hooray to stay relevant.

  33. The most obvious statement to have come with the resignation of Mr Arthur from the BLP, and to have come with his position that he is an independent, is the fact that both the DLP and BLP are two absolutely intellectually and politically backward, bankrupt and discredited factions in this country.

By these kinds of political actions, Mr Arthur is telling those persons who are intellectually politically serious people and who are presently part of these two monstrous idiotic factions to take leave of them now, and is telling those persons who are intellectually politically serious people and who would have been otherwise thinking about joining them to reconsider doing so.

What is ironic though is the following situation, and this is something that cannot be reasonably gainsaid: Mr Arthur, as Prime Minister and Minister of Finance for almost 14 years, has done substantial, and in many cases – irreparable, damage and destruction to the political economy and service industries sector of this country, owing to the substantial array of nefarious and backward fiscal and financial policies and programs that he and the BLP government perpetrated on those sectors for that time.

That he now wishes to somewhat divorce himself from the sordid financial material mess in which he and the BLP government have helped to put this country is impossible for him to do, notwithstanding that he is – by his resignation, by his declaration of being an independent member – and by his refusal to join the DLP – clearly rightly posturing that the DLP and BLP are two of the most backward and contemptible parties in this English-speaking CARICOM sub-region.

The DLP and BLP must absolutely permanently go in this country in less than 4 years, or not in 7 years – 12 years Barbados will achieve the leper status of a virtual failed state.

The man could not care less about what some of you see as a legacy for himself, his sole mission right now is to destroy Mottley and break down the thing he has always fought even as leader of that party the elitest development of the BLP which he sees Mottley serving because of her background of being of her own belief of being superior and coming from a family of higher standing than which he Arthur came from..

Trust me his focus is very targeted at the destruction of Mottley and no one will side track his effort,

I say to him to go carefully as Mottley is a wounded beast and it is not beyond her to order a hit job on Arthur, were it to help her cause and she is well enough connected to drug dealers to have the access to do so,, she is as low as one gets, Arthur stay safe and fight the fight.

But you know what it isn’t going to happen (again).
The man is a bloody coward unable to handle adversity or defeat. Everything must be given to him on a silver platter or else he sucks like a spoilt brat who takes his bat and ball away when he is no longer at the centre of the game.
Check the man’s history and MO.

The man has proven to be a bully who had the audacity to threaten resignation as an MP representing the same people of St. Peter you so arduously want to promote unless he was given the post of LOTO out of selfish financial aggrandizement way back in the early 1990โ€™s; if what was said can be relied upon as factual.

He is the man who said he has to intentions of serving for more than 2 terms as PM.
He is the man that resigned as LOTO in 2008 and took total responsibility for all the mistakes made by the BLP administration during his term at the helm thereby exonerating MAM from any incompetence or failures.
He is the man who expressed a total lack of confidence in MAM and questioned her suitability to lead with the resulting undermining of her authority and opportunistic removal as LOTO when the coward smelled the dying blood and heard the rambling death throes of the former PM Thompson.

He is the same man that took the BLP into the 2013 elections and lost to a gang of the biggest fools and lying scunts that Barbados ever produced.
Not only did the jackass lost but again walked away from the field of defeat after promising the electorate like Jesus the Merlin a miraculous economic recovery and loads of work for MAM to do.

Like a power-starving hyena what has he sniffed in the air of political gangrene this time? The wounded and extremely vulnerable carcass called the Barbados economy he hopes to revive after Stinkliar and company impose further draconian measures in the next 6 months under the watchful eye of the IMF which would certainly lead to the fall of an incompetent lying intellectually bankrupt administration that would make EWB puke in his watery grave?

Can’t you guys get it into your heads that OSA is not the preferred leader in the eyes of the electorate? Who will go back to a pre-2008 scenario in these most challenging of times with the changes in telecommunications technology taking place so rapidly?
The BLP is unelectable with OSA at the helm, especially among the young and people looking for a change.
If OSA’s goal is to prevent MAM from ever becoming PM then he needs to fess up. And fess up soon. Not wait until there is an election which (mark my words) will be sooner than later. For sure, he will never be PM again.

I AM PRETTY SURE THAT WHEN OWEN ARTHUR WAS IN JAMAICA. HE WAS A MEMBER OF THE BLP. THERE WERE SOME NOW WELL KNOWN PERSONS WHO WERE IN JAMAICA AT THE TIME. THE PLANS AND DISCUSSIONS WERE ONGOING.

In any case I am not supporting a woman over a man when it comes to leadership of anything. I am not sure if the female is suited for leadership of anything far less a country such as Barbados considering the nature of the Barbadian woman especially one such as Mia with a background that makes her feel that she must be Prime Minister , she is better than anybody else. The Barbadian woman is the repository of all the discriminatory practices and class consciousness and class discrimination practiced during the dark ages in the Caribbean and Barbados. These Women are scornful , discriminating and very harsh on people who they feel do not measure up. It is demonstrated everyday in Barbados from the poor service offered by females in their capacities as service providers. Service in Barbados is poor poor poor in because there are near 100 % women in the various service areas, too many women pushing up their mouts, harking at people and behaving and treating customers badly especially persons who appear black and poor. The Barbadian female is one of the most discriminating and uncouth females anywhere on this earth, evidenced by the way they behave when they visit the so-called low islands, Barbadians are despised throughout the Caribbean because of how our women behave to others; LOOKING DOWN ON THEM , SCORNING THEM and complaining about food , accommodation and carrying a nasty pompous air of superiority, This is the personna–of the Bajan woman——–You can decide if Mia fits this profile. .

Mia is certainly in a hurry to be Prime Minster
This is quite evident where in her anxiety to reach the pinnacle, she seeks the fall of the DLP probably oblivious to the fact that there was an election only last year . Maybe she is trying too hard and maybe needs to let the ball come to her. As a woman who has never played a ball game of any kind , she might have difficulty understanding this concept and she might, due to inexperience grab ,snatch and false jump at the ball.

In any case though we need to control these females in Barbados. That there are more female Permanent Secretaries now than ever contributes to our weakness as a country, I dont care what Caswell say. He only playing to the gallery . Caswell know that the women in Barbados aint no good too when it comes to certain matters of leadership of institutions. Every female in charge of anything in Barbados is causing stress daily———–no one can dispute that fact, not even the much respected Capable and Knowledgeable Caswell Franklyn or the defensive and obnoxious AC and Islandgal or the erudite and much admired Well Well and Simple Simon -who is not as simple as the name suggest.

When you get to know or see the MISSION at hand , It will let you know this is a Bajan thing for Barbados .
Land is for the Bajan blood line and Birth , The Island is to small to fit the World and leave Bajans lock out side by way of VISA living out side , Most can afford to live in their own county .
After this Year of the DLP/BLP/and DBLP showing their Ass-sits We will let out what we see,
At this time we dont want to get in the way of the Bajan learning about the Crooks, liars and scumbags you all dealing with , and lets not for get vote buyers like the PM and MIAs Mudda with cash in hand ?

You are using one of your feminine tricks and that is to trivialize anything said about women and making a joke off it. Look ! these women are not paragons of virtue and are indeed very vile and despicable . Admit to the nasty things that women do please ! Ask Mesa for confirmation. Ralph Boyce will oblige.
    How about this?
How many men have be given ready-made shirts in Barbados by women?
How many women have denied men the right to see their children?
Can you want anything more spiteful and wicked than that
How many women have cleared out the house and left men with nothing?
How many women have encouraged men to build house and then chase them away after the house finished ?
How many ? Many Many , Many Many Many !
The women in BARBADOS have a very nasty approach to life and are a threat to the stability and progress of this country if they are not reigned in. Too many Delilahs and Jezebels about !

You ignore this warning and trivialize my pleadings at your peril
Don’t control the women in Barbados then , Dont control them . See what is going to happen. They must be controlled and that does not mean treating them bad, It means teaching them the right way, that is what it means. So that they can take their rightful place alongside -Man
I love women and want to see them do better at being good women.

  48. @Dr. the Honorable “teaching them the right way,”

This teaching should take place in childhood.

But too many men ignore their children aged new born to 18.

And then try to reform a full grown woman? You are bound to fail.

Here are 2 ancient sayings for you to ponder:

    1. Train up a child in the way she should go and when she is old she will not depart from. it.
    2. You cannot make a silk purse out of an old sow’s ear.

    Serious.

  49. And another saying for you Dr. the Honorable;

If you sow the wind (neglect the important and difficult task of raising your children properly) you will reap the whirlwind (inherit a society that you wish you could run away from).

If you have had the misfortune to meet many bad women. Maybe you should have first had some conversations (and made some observations) with your prospective fathers-in-law (and mothers-in-law) Ask the prospective fathers-in-law (and prospective mothers-in-law) what kinds of daughters [and sons] they has raised.

Only then should you move forward in a relationship.

    Simple Simon
