Today Barbados finds itself in a historically sad leadership position. We have the worst PM, minister of finance, minister of tourism and minister of labour “ever” all at the same fringing time, with four long years to go. The PM right after the election returned to seclusion and has been missing in action on key issues facing our nation, the minister of finance is playing with the economy like it’s a game of monopoly, the dimpled chin minister of tourism who looks the part is totally lost as compared the other regional tourism ministers who are running circles around him, and the minister of labour who lost her seat has taken her incompetence and lack of sympathy for struggling Bajans to new levels.

Our minister of tourism, a key sector to Barbados, like a jealous child recently made negative comments about the progress that St.Lucia is making in tourism, saying that our tourism product was 30 years ahead of St.Lucia’s, he simply cannot see that his poor efforts and lack of ideas in challenging times, is rapidly eroding a product it took over 30 years to build. However it is “WE” the Bajan people who choose these leaders in the last election, so no complaining should be heard from DLP supporters.  DLP supporters simply placed party first instead of what was best for Barbados…. they fell for the DLP party hype, drank the “don’t worry be happy” coolaid, and fell for the vilification of Owen Arthur . As many can observe the street talk on how poor this DLP government is doing grows daily, as the effects of the DLP election hype and coolaid starts to wear off.

We should be beyond no confidence in the newly re-elected government but Bajans never fail to amaze me.  Is it our house slave mindset as a nation that keeps us passive in the face of adversity like sheep grazing in a field?

When the DLP said they were not just built an economy but a society, what they did not tell you is that it will be a society of poor people.

God Help Us !!

    Austin, I could not agree with you more. You have hit the nail right on the head and I especially endorse your comment as it relates to the fact that DLP supporter should not complain about this incompetent government they have return to office. . . I can only pray that the BLP passed a no confidence notion against this government before the good people of Barbados take to the street to show their dissatisfaction

    We have the best Government that money can buy. I am sick and tired of hearing people say that this Government was re-elected. Such a statement should not fall from anyone’s mouth. Everybody wants to pretend that the present Government is legitimate. They broke every rule to win.

    It troubles me that it is no secret that the last election was marred by massive fraud and none of the law enforcement agencies have taken any steps. I have in my possession the election returns for Christopher Sinckler, and to say that it is a work of fiction would be an understatement. However with obvious misrepresentations, the Supervisor of Elections failed to take steps.

    I hope all on BU understands what I have just posted. If what I am saying is untrue, Minster Sinckler would have grounds to sue me for defamation, and I challenge him to do so. Let me repeat, his election return is a work of fiction. He declared at least one thing that should merit prosecution and he glaringly omitted items.

    The people is not a factor just taxes and selling out birth right to the highest bidder.
    Barbados is a large cement block for sale , just think to see any nature in Barbados you must pay to go in a cave.
    All other things is build up on fraud and lies ,
    By custom or law no BLP nor DLP can face criminal charges only civil for they made the rule of laws for others but not them self.

    Crooks ,We call them with no shame , but yet must watch our words as they take what ever they want as crooks in the night will do.
    PM ,AG, Judge.DPP and the so called historians of Barbados , paid off with titles and paychecks ,
    When will the sell out stop, when will we all be equal= under the law?

    Unless there is a process and a will to take action some words are just empty – alleged evidence of votes bought; fraudulent election returns; an ineligible successful Candidate. Is there no way to pursue and address these claims in order to identify and punish the guilty? Perhaps if they are repeated often enough something will stick.

    The Minister of Finance met with the leaders of the unions today and guess what was put on the table??? They are asking the public workers to accept a VOLUNTARY pay cut!

    We warned them but they would not listen and on BU their acolytes lambasted us. Having not given public workers a cent in salary increases in five years and they have allowed things to get so bad now…… how the hell they could ask people to take a voluntary pay cut. One thing for sure, they would have had to go to the House to cut salaries again and I don’t see the BLP supporting that.

    If only they had listened………but no, they boldly said……we aint want to hear nothing from you all….wunnah had wunnah time, 14 years and now is we time, we gine do things we way…..keep wunnah ideas to wunnah self. Their chickens have come home to roost and now all of we will have to suffer.

    Listening to the Governor today, I have no hope or confidence in this government. He was lying, ducking and bobbing and weaving around those journalists today. How pathetic!

How the hell can you build a society without a good economy? Only a Dem would… or think he could and not look where we have ended up….at the IMF doors.

    One suggestion put forward today to cut expenditure was to get rid of the constituency councils…….no, no, no …we cant cut them. We are in trouble and the DLP sacred cow cannot be touched. That would have put CCC out of work and miller and I would be glad!

    BU would be inclined to go outside the cabinet for someone who is business savvy and is not hamstrung by the need to deliver delivery patronage to the political cronies.

    If, and I repeat that if they are serious about that pay cut volunteerism they will enforce a parallel compulsory decrease in food prices, as well as drop the VAmP.

    3. It is time for bipartisan think tanks Bajans who love Barbados to come forward physically, and virtually (appropriately fashioned websites to cull ideas for the ones who fear “the night of the long knives crew – the BLPites when they get back in) and submit their ideas for these hard times

    Was shocked to listen to two moderators (Ellis/Caddle) yesterday who placed Sinckler and Sealy under a very high powered microscope. This is the kind of scrutiny we need to exert on our public officials whether B or D. The days of yardfolwism no longer has credibility.

    Sealy and Sinckler have been and continue to be failures. A funny thing happens when you reward failure, nothing. Imagine rather than restructure Barbados’ national debt and create fiscal elbow room, Sinckler and the GoCB would prefer to send home hundreds if not thousands of public servants.

    What is happening to this administration is that their lies and deceit are coming back to plague them, starting with a very sharp $400 Million bite in their hypocritical backsides.

    They were warn about their pigheaded “powful-foolish” attitude to the management of the economy by those who know and had experience in its vulnerabilities and need for astute well informed hands-on management to keep it on a path to provide the necessary resources to maintain a cohesive society enjoying a reasonably high standard of living in a resource scare land.
    The OSA administration was made to look like a bunch of incompetent and corrupt people who brought ruin to the economy and responsible for the high cost of living because of their incestuous self-aggrandizement association with the private sector and the food importing merchants.

    There is a good programme on the BBC Radio International about corruption.
    Bim ranks very high (favourably at No. 15) on the international corruption index.

    The PM Stuart, in an interview with a journalist, again confirmed that there has been very little if any known corruption in Barbados especially in the administration of the country’s public finances. He is therefore reiterating his position in Parliament that the BLP under OSA is not guilty of the many accusations and damaging claims of corruption while in office.

    One wonders what the likes of ac, CCC and even Bushie- (who accused OSA the BLP of “stealing” $800 Million by way of contracts overruns with much of it ending up in personal foreign bank accounts and real estate in places like the Cayman islands) now think about the PM. Is he telling the truth to the BBC interviewer or does Corruption International ratings agency has it all wrong and during the BLP administration should have been at the bottom of the scale?

    The truth will out!

    We should also be acutely aware that the 16 weeks import cover which the government continues to boast of includes 30 day liabilities extended by exporters to Barbadian importers (businesses) on open account.

    It would be interesting to see how that figure is made up. How much of it is in SDR’s (special drawing rights).

    The writer suggests that DLP voters are to be blamed for the failures of the BLP in the last elections. Does this person (Austin) not know that the government of Barbados is, for better or worse, the government of all Bajans, even those of us who did not vote for either party. If fact, we would like to think that the regime in Bridgetown is the government of maybe 1MM Bajans and their descendants living aboard, also.This crass political tribal insertion into the discourse is largely unhelpful when the whole system needs fundamental transformation away from the political tribes. This is still a system that treats people like children and hides information until it is convenient for the possessors.

    And who is responsible for this state of affairs. On whom does this absolutely poor Cabinet positioning reflect on?
    Do you really expect an incompetent lying insecure boss to have bright dynamic effective people around him even though he has his own mandate to lead and make decisions in the interests of the country?

    Now Dummy, just look at the way he treats your man the muzzled pit bull now turned into a silenced do little lapdog Chihuahua.

    Estwick played an invaluable part in the suspect re-election of this administration. Much more so than the liar Stinckler; and he- ‘Dr. Say-Little’ these days- deserves to be recognized and rewarded with the Knighthood of Economic & Finance titled “MoF&EA”.

    Yesterday, I heard the Governor of the Central Bank on radio sounding more like a minister of finance. He asked us to take the pain now so that Barbados can get things back on balance.

    Does he and the Government think that all Barbadians are idiots? A few months ago the Government was up and down this country telling the electorate: that there was no problem with the economy; that the Opposition was lying; and a whole host of other misrepresentations. The electorate bought into that crap. If they want to ask the country to accept pain, they should go back to the electorate for a new mandate: this one was obviously obtained by fraud.

    I absolutely agree that they have to go outside Richard Sealy (molasses thoughts marketeer that he is) but he has to tread carefully.

    Fumble however has a chance to use this crisis to change the stagnant way politics has operated in Barbados all these years.

    This is possibly the kairos moment for true private sector/public sector collaboration.

    This collaboration is not something that the DLP needs to be ashamed of, in fact, if they do it right, they might even be “rewarded” for it.

    The issue is fundamentally how does one, faced with these challenges, fast track ideas, national initiatives and realize rapid responses to meet this national problem?

    War.

    No not the combat itself but the modality and machinery that warmongers through the ages used to assemble the weapons of war, before their combat.

    Tzun tzu a la Barbados.

    So here I respectfully submit my Accelerated Think Tanks. ATTs

    In simple terms what the ATT seeks to achieve is ro tap into our equivalent of the industrial machinery, co-opt its best minds for a single purpose, engaging the current enemy, the flailing economy and our poorly performing industries with new weapons, in this case, Skilled HR drawn from the private sector.

    Now, here is the quandary David, how do you manage this “purposed industrial revolution” with these egos, mindful that you are (i) seeking to use some of the same machinery/machinists who fu**ed up the state of affairs (and are possibly responsible for where you are right now – yes the faceless public service) and (ii) your imperative to replace the stragglers-on with team players, real quick. This “revolution” is not going to wait nor will it tolerate f’ups.

    Bench markers.

    You use units of peeformance measure that the private sector counterpart used and you peg the performance of your public sector counterparts in these ATTs against their private sector actors.

    Remember I am only talking about these accelerator think tanks which are being assembled for a finite time and specific purpose

    That purpose can be defined as follows “as AT&T for Tourism, your scope of works is 2 weeks after commissioning you shall deliver x, by week 4 you shall have delivered y, by week 6 blah ti blah

    Sealy (and the other places you employ the ATTs) won’t loose face but our country needs mechanisms that deliver instead of wukking up like a geriatric patient like me pun dem scrumptious Brazilians. Oh to be young again.

    Leave Austin and deal with reality by putting your hands to the coalface to chip away at the $400 million.
    Or are you going to quote some extract from some international article about the economy of some other country? What about the economic corrective medicine the IMF has prescribed for Bim?

    You can even quote what the PM has to say about corruption in Barbados and let us know if he is telling lies when he states there is and there has never been any significant corruption especially under your man Seethru.

    They even wanted to know how Barbados could help other countries in this regard.

    I don’t think that we can expect public servants to take a voluntary pay cut when they see the waste that is going on at the top. I think that everyone wants to play their part, but not when they see unlimited overseas travel, expensive vehicles for all and sundry, the constituency councils, etc. It’s like the boss asking his employees to take a pay cut while he goes out and buys a Mercedes. One way or another the public service expenditure has to be cut. Say what you like about Sandi, but what he did saved the economy and the Barbados dollar. Things are even worse now than in 1991, and similar measures will have to be taken. The most frustrating thing for all of us though, is the singular lack of action of any kind. In these circumstances the only thing worse than a bad decision is no decision.

    He is the one that said the BLP honourable members of Parliament were never involved in activities of corruption or malfeasance in public office.

    What are you saying now is that the PM is a stranger to the truth and a hypocrite?

    PS: We are still awaiting the list. Yes that $64 million dollar list that the Governor says must be implemented sharp and swift or else (??) the Dreaded D word will be forever associated with that damned, destructive deceitful dangerous lying party

    Carson, once again you are waaaay off base. I know that it’s hard for people like you to think that not everyone in Barbados is either a “B” or a”D”, but you would be surprised. I support policies that will help take this country forward, no matter who makes them. I was highly critical of the apparent abandonment of agriculture in favour of condos over the past 20 years, but at least I could look back now and see that something was done. Right now NOTHING is being done Carson, nothing! If you agree that Sandi was right, why aren’t you supporting similar measures now? Ok, we’re the victims of an international recession. So what do we do? Wring our hands and hope that someday soon it will all be over, or do we take the necessary measures to defend our economy and our currency?

    Many importers in Barbados and elsewhere are given 30 days to pay for goods/services by exporters they have built a good relationship. In times of uncertainty the exporter will ask to be paid in advance. The bottomline is that a % of Barbados forex is already committed.
