Kaymar Jordan, Editor in Chief, Nation newspaper

A letter the group dispatched to Stuart said: “Against the backdrop of growing concern among supporters of the Government and our party, with respect to perceived weaknesses in our leadership of the country, and a sense of drift and inertia arising therefrom, we the undersigned elected members of the Parliamentary Group seek an urgent audience with you to discuss matters of grave concern to us, as well as to chart a path forward for the retention of our party in Government.”

Nation Newspaper Mon, December 12, 2011 – 1:43 PM

The Nation newspaper broke the story last weekend that 11 disgruntled DLP parliamentarians signed a letter which was dispatched to Prime Minister Fruendel Stuart. The message conveyed in the letter was that many on Stuart’s team were dissatisfied with his leadership. BU subsequently confirmed that there is some concern in the DLP camp about Stuart’s leadership and his ability to lead the party successfully into the next general election. The Nation newspaper was very clear in its message to its readership that the letter was signed by the 11 DLP parliamentarians.

Since the newspaper report Ministers David Estwick, Michael Lashley et al have challenged the local newspaper to produce the letter which is alleged to carry their signatures. In fact they have threatened legal action. The Nation newspaper in its most recent statement on the matter has indicated it is sticking to its story. The question which is on the lips of many Barbadians and political commentators is whether the Nation should produce the letter with the alleged 11 signatures and in the process ensure its journalistic integrity, at the same time the reputations and political careers of MPs identified in the Nation newspaper report would effectively be destroyed. To most onlookers the decision for the Nation is a no-brainer, it should produce the letter. One is left to speculate by the refusal of the Nation to produce the letter whether sensationalism is winning the battle over ‘journalistic integrity’.

BU holds no brief for either party involved; we are on the side of truth, in this case journalistic honesty. Yes the matter can be dragged through the law courts of Barbados but with a narrow window of one year before the government is constitutionally required to hold a general election, the damage would have been done. What has added to the political intrigue instigated by this story is why would a leading media house in Barbados based its frontpage stories in recent days on a non existent letter  stated to list 11 signatures and on the flipside some of those named in the letter counter by saying they never signed. Some one is not telling the truth. The Barbadian public deserves to be told the truth. One again has to wonder if the Nation has the letter why it simply doesn’t produce it and remove the anxiety and distraction the matter has brought to the Barbados landscape.

“Accuracy is at the heart of what we do. It is our job to get it first but it is above all our job to get it right. Accuracy, as well as balance, always takes precedence over speed” (Reuter’s Journalism Handbook of Journalism)

What is clear is that when the truth is finally made public in this matter serious damage would have been done to the reputation of one or both parties involved. Could this story play out to compare with the Carol Martindale Hartley Henry saga which has dissipated?

Given the seriousness of this matter Barbadians should be interested in what the Attorney General of Barbados Adriel Brathwaite has to say.

  1. If I want to discuss with my boss concerns of his/her leadership does that mean that I want to over throw or (oust) him? If I go with a colleague at the same level to discuss the same concerns upon which we agree that can affect productivity and profitability, do we want to oust the boss and replace that boss?

If my colleagues and I met to put our thoughts together on what we will say and possibly the order we want to raise these issues, does that mean that we are plotting to overthrow the boss? And if we were members of Parliament would we make the Advocate and Nation newspaper as confirming that we definitely want to overthrow the PM?

When all we would have done was choose another route other than the Party organs and procedure to say ‘Boss, elections coming, survey say people got concern with your leadership and favour Colleague F. We got to talk ’bout these things and leh we see if we should do another survey ’cause this one from 4 constituencies. We just want to talk but urgently ’cause we ain’ certain that we got a grip on this election?’

Just hyperthetically, does that make us gangsters plotting a coup in Government? does it make treacherous? Will we place ourselves again after being in opposition 14 years because of a previous ‘no confidence’ motion for the same reason “leadership style” and nothing more than that?

Sensationalism???? Breaking Big Story at all cost????

  2. Did the honorable members make a call for a meeting to discuss PM Stuart’s leadership style (or lack thereof) and their chances at the next election based on a CADRES opinion poll YES

Did the Nation and BarbadosToday newspapers have sight of a letter requesting such a meeting from certain honorable members YES

Did the honorable members stand up in the public domain when called to account and admit they are concerned solely with retaining government whenever the next election is called by virtue of the letter requesting the meeting NO – not man and woman enough to do so!!!!

No wonder the young people dont trust politicians

  3. Note Kaymar Jordan’s response to the matter. She was deliberate to mention that the Nation is standing by its story of a letter ‘written on behalf’ of DLP MPs to the PM. Her position conflicts with the report published on Sunday. Of course the news extract did not exact a position on this point.

“At anytime a deal can be struck to remove one regime and foist another on the electorate without that said electorate having a say or any legal recourse to right such a wrong. So one positive out of this saga is that it brings into focus, how easily our system of parliamentary ‘democracy’ can be misused just to satisfy the selfish desires of the power hungry.”

I am disappointed at the level of “debate” here…In our democratic system we do not vote for a leader… at least not officially…. the party has a right to choose its leader… Even if we did vote for a leader, that person was not Mr. Stuart. I do not understand the talk about “integrity” just because one bristling politician threw it out there. We have yet to see if there is any lack of on the part of the Nation, and if the entire story is accurate I do not see why there is a lack of integrity if only those politicians wish their leader to answer their concerns.

  5. To david:
My difficulty with the bloggers handling of this has more to do with what is important as opposed to what has to be done to cover the DEMS behinds, for that is what I am seeing here parading as where is some signed letter is a desperate attempt to save our political souls.. Is it a fact that the eleven or ten or five wanted Stuart to step on because of concerns about retaining the government. Yes, full stop. If that is being disingenuous I shall continue to be so.

“No wonder the young people don’t trust politicians”

The quality of leadership this country is experiencing is a very sad reflection of the growing social decay and economic morass afflicting this once proud nation.
Imagine when the head of the country’s most revered financial institution can feel so smug as to boast that we should be exceptionally proud of the country’s position of No.47 on the UNDP’s most recent publication of Human Development Index. For the 1992 ratings Barbados was at No.20 just after Israel and the number one among developing countries. In just under 20 years Barbados has slipped 27 places and the guv has the “arrogance” to feel so over the moon for this position.
But a country, as the saying goes, always get the leaders the people deserve!

  8. The rebels have just made Stuart their maximum leader, and there is nothing any one of them can do about it. Until elections they must sing the high praises of Stuart or the public shall know the truth of the attempted coup. Any one can tell any one I am going to put you in court but getting there and winning is another story. Let us continue the parade I am willing to read all sides of this story.

  9. There is no need for speculation. It is so simple,in the face of the denials produce the letter which is the basis of the story, that is all the Nation Newspaper has to and now must do,if only to protect its own integrity.

  10. Raging Butterfly
True we do not vote for a leader per se, we vote for a party, therefore the party with the majority is then asked by the G G to chose a leader and form the government. However, there is no recourse fordisidents from both parties in parliament coming together in enough numbers to become the majority party in parliament, then informing the G G that they are and when confirmed, they are then asked to name a leader and form the government. This can happen without a general elections.

  11. To Progressive:
the only people who have any thing to protect here are the rebels, not the nation. The Nation did what all news organizations do print a good story to sell papers, and they are milking this one.

  12. In some countries, I think T&T is one, as soon as you leave the party the seat becomes vacant, Eric Williams did that many years ago. However, in Barbados an M.P can cross the floor as often as he/she likes ( E.G) Hammie La.

  13. To Scout:
that is not so; the GG has to refer to the PM . It is only the PM who decides if the PM steps down not the GG or ay one else. Even if they brought a vote of no confidence; Stuart can put of the elections as long as possible ; ask Sandi about 1994.

  14. @lemmie

Your concern remains valid and it is one which BU has not denied. The thesis of this story however is about thriving for the highest journalistic standard at all times. To suggest in a lead story that 11 ministers and bankbenchers affixed their signatures to a letter adds to a already fickle script. It would therefore be an untruth which violates all tenets of good journalism.

  15. lemuel
The Nation seems to know they have a juicy story and I agree with you they are milking it to the fullest.I’m sure there has been an increase of sales since Sunday, and if they indicate they are printing the “so-called” letter in the next Sunday Sun, you better get to your vendor early or the newspaper would be all sold out. In this recessionary times any sensible newspaper would do this to boost sales, that’s good marketing. The Advocate can do a rebuttal to the Nation Story and look to increase sales too, because they can do with that extra cash right now.

  16. People keep focus, while we are all debating the Democratic Labour Party plotters and with call in programmes on hold, look what has happened over the past few days:

    1. The IMF made the Central Bank Governor look like a liar and the BSS who stuck to their figures came out smelling of roses. The unemployment figure is really 12.1% up from 6.5% when the Dems took over.

    2. Rhianna has not denied the press report and so I assume it is true that she was paid 3.5 million for her performance at the LOUD concert when the Minister of Tourism, the CEO and the President told us that she performed for FREE. All we got from the President of the BTA was a no comment/denial like we are getting here from these jokers for DLP MPs.

    3. The IMF report warns of a further downgrade.

    4. The cost of living has sky rocket over the last few weeks

AND (5), the most important one is that the NIS Board reversed its decision and is throwing 60 million of our NIS money into the Four Seasons bottomless pit when all along we heard that they were asking for 50 million. When was 60 million requested? Why the increase? Is this extra 10 million to finance the DLP campaign since the plotters complained that Fruendel aint set up nothing to deal with financing the election and that they had had funding for the 2008 election set aside since 2006.

Is Tony Marshall and Justin Robinson going to resign? Where is their integrity? Strange since Dems on this blog are now calling for integrity?

But wait how can Dr Estwick get on my TV and talk about his integrity?? A man who pulled a gun on another one in Parliament and denied it at first and then had to admit and apologise. If Thompson had acted then, his name would not now be on any list as a plotter!!!!

These Dems were plotting against Stuart for a while now. Remember earlier this year Stuart was away and there was a picture of them all in a minibus going to some place in St James to have a so called retreat. Hartley Henry in the midst again! But the Nation got a tip off and caught them red handed so that Freundel found out.

I believe that they were plotting to overthrow the man, that’s my belief.

  17. One other good thing is the freedom of expression which the Nation feels to forcibly express itself even when the matter is anti-government. Under the previous government there was the distinct impression by many that media houses contemplated such action at grave risk.

  18. But Lemuel, you can help out the plotters too. You said you have or saw a BBM from Chris Sinckler outlining the plot. Why dont you share it here on BU? That will set the cat among the pigeons.

Someone said earlier that the BLP is silent. It is not for the BLP to say a word, let the Dems cannibalise themselves as they always do. Actually, they surprised me that they held together so long after the king died.

  19. @Prodigal Son

To challenge a couple points you made. BU in earlier blogs questioned the NIS Board and indeed called for its resignation if the Investment Committee’s decision was reversed.

The other point is why has the BLP been so silent on the Estwick gun matter in parliament? Has the Opposition raised any question about the matter since it was sequestered to the Privilege Committee?

  20. To Prodigal:
What are you putting me in; people have lawyered up; are you trying to get me to the high court? It is my understanding that Sinker gave a letter to the Nation, and it is signed by members of the DLP. My real concern is why is every one ignoring the part played by Mia. Was she there when they went to the GG and he resigned after? Was she at 112 Saphire Apartments. When is this 3rd party being rolled out. Is Cynthia forde trembling in her boots before the thing really hits the fan? People this shall get worse before it gets better for the DLP. It is the first time I have seen members of both parties conspire to get rid of sitting PM. But Stuart is a boss!! we know Owen was hitting some white so he is not in it!!

  21. Trained Economist Avatar

Just a couple of points Prodigal.

    1. The IMF does no unemployment survey of their own, as you seem to be suggesting. The stats department has always been the official medium for reporting unemployment stats for barbados, the IMF has taken the stats figures as they should. The central bank governor queried the figure from stats because the stats department could provide no supporting evidence that 3,000 jobs had been lost during the three month period (Jan to mar 2011). In their sample of 1900 households the unemployment rate of 28 households had moved to 13%, which pushed out the confidence interval to a point where the mid-point wads 12.1%. Such a rate would mean the loss of 3,000 jobs for the quarter, which the other evidence did not seem to support. The central bank was very aware that the stats figure would be the one that would be used by external parties, hence their encouragement ti stats to ensure they got it right. If the stats figures are in fact subsequently shown to be incorrect, they would have chosen to send an incorrect figure to the rest of the world.

    2. Can you find me a non-commodity exporting country in the world whose outlook was not changed to negative by the rating agencies?

    2. You seem to believe everything the nation says. What evidence is there that the NIS investment committee ever voted no and then over-turned their decision besides some nation stories. The nation keeps getting their stories wrong all the time. My sources tell me that the investment analysts at the NIS had recommended no. It is interesting that this seems to have been leaked to the press, but not the various reports done by leading global firms pointing to the financial viability of the project. Or maybe they were leaked but not reported on.

  22. @ David
I read LIES weekly in the Nation especially in 2006 & 2007. Saw plenty here on BU too. You as ‘Editor’ of BU ought to ensure the veracity of statements on this blog before publishing too?
Yuh gotta love how the Nation reported the ‘vexed’ MPs and Lowe YET sticking to their story. lol

  23. To Prodigal:
Plotters here are trying to use you to hide this crime under a lot of verbiage by trained economist do not be misled that conversation about sats is not important now stick and focus on this plotting scheme.

  24. I understand that Stephen Lashley is saying the plot is an internal party thing. It seems as if these fellows do not understand that removing a PM is a national thing!

  25. To lemuel
With all the denials flying around don’t you think that production of the source of the story would prove conclusively its validity? That they want to milk it to the max for sales is another thing .I would find it hard to believe that the paper would print such a devastating story without really solid proof however seeing is believing. On the other hand if those named knew that they had in fact affixed their signatures, it is also unbelievable that they would issue public denials unless maybe they don’t think the paper has the proof. In either case SHOW THE PUBLIC THE EVIDENCE YOU HAVE.

  26. To Progressive:
I do not see why you are entangling yourself about. Kellman confirmed the plot; Donville confirmed the plot; Stephen Lashley confirmed the plot. Alright you can call it an internal meeting with the PM if you like. The letter adds nothing to it. The only thing the letter does is destroy these plotters even more. And even if I had the evidence I would not put it out there; I do not kiss and tell.

  27. To progressive:
Estwick did not sign; Donville did not sign; Jones got cold feet and did not sign. Why do you think that Michael Lashley is suddenly quiet?

“My real concern is why is every one ignoring the part played by Mia. Was she there when they went to the GG and he resigned after? Was she at 112 Saphire Apartments. ”

Lemuel, we all know you have a paranoiac fear of the woman but you can rely on one attribute she unstintingly displays and that is LOYALTY.
You can rest assured that MAM is not involved in this clear betrayal and attempt of back stabbing. This is one time that she was living up to her name “Missing In Action (MIA). It is possible that he could have had a prior awareness but NO involvement as you are trying to make out.

But if FS does not pull up his boots and kick some “ass” he is going to look like a real “johnny-(come-lately)”. Already people overseas are laughing at the political circus currently in Bridgetown.
And we wonder how the “yutes” get so! By watching and mocking the “monkey handling gun style” of leadership. “Where there is no vision the people perish”. Your good book says so!

  29. To Miller:
I was waiting on you for I have the evidence that Mia was involved. Ask Mia who went with Sinker and her to the GG. Ask her what made the GG resign suddenly. Ask Mia if she thinks she can get away with her plot to sell out Barbados.

  30. @ Miller
    Some people love Mia name.

  31. Everyone should kindly note that after the plot was exposed Sinckler was first to jump out the foxhole and leave the rest of the rebels to fend for themselves….So now, all the other rebels coming forward one by one to say them aint involve

But it is clear that there was/is a plot to move Stuart – that much has been confirmed by all involved who have spoken on the matter thus far (even by denying it – it was confirmation of such a plot)

  32. To Enuff:
When you see me and Miller talking butt out.

  33. @enuff

When you read lies on BU you simply need to exercise the freedom available to challenge.

  34. David
I guess you are a journalist, so I can see where you’re coming from and you’re right, However professionalism is not just for journalists, what about the politicians themselves, should they not practice what they preach? and the Gov of Central Bank, trying to make a government dept namely the BSS look stupid only to hear an Int Agency confirming the BSS position. What about the chairman an members of Boards like Marshall and his group, who made a definitive decision on a matter only not only to overturn it but increase the grant, with no explanation to the people to whom this money belong? What about the pastors who encourage the congregation to bring their money only for him/her to drive big and live in gated communities? I can go on Integruty has gone through the window here in Barbados, everyone is just looking to ” make a dollar.” The Nation has a responsibility to the clients but so too does the politicians, the doctors, lawyers etc.

  35. @ Lem
I am not in Sir. It was an observation not an opinion.

  36. To barbados first:
You are the only one here who is really focusing on the issue, and that there was a foiled plot. what I want the rest of Barbados to know is that Mia was involved, and let her come and deny it. Mia knows all the plotters very very well. Miller where are you my friend.

  37. To Enuff:
My humble pardon for this snipe sir.

  38. Trained Economist,

I am agreeing with Prodigal on his points, you as a trained economist seem to want to confuse the public like the Governor. The Governor never explained why as soon as the unemployment rate rose to 12.1%, he queried it and for some strange reason did his own survey. Tell BU why? If the 3000 jobs were not lost, how did he come up with nearly 11% also. We all know that the IMF work off of the facts put before it, Prodigal did not say the IMF conducted its own survey from what I read in his posting.

The Governor was playing politics with the figures and you know it too. Stop blaming the Nation for your party’s incompetence in running the economy.

It was the master plotter, Chris Sinckler himself who said that the NIS board turned down the loan request and that he had asked them to go back to the drawing board. Not the Nation alone.

I agree with Prodigal, Tony Marshall and Justin Robinson should resign, they folded under political pressure, they have no balls. If Four Seasons is such a viable project, never mind the international market is in trouble, funds would still be found for it? Where are the real owners of this project? This injection of funds against the better judgement of most Barbadians is like Obama’s injection of taxpayers millions into Solyndra and you see what happenend there. And like Solyudra, the NIS will be second in line to be repaid. If that is alright with Dems, it is not with right thinking Barbadians.

If I didn’t respect your intellectual potential (as I do with ac) I would swear you are “uneducated’s” identical twin except you were born with a birthmark shaped like a “B” and his like a “D”. Same coin different side that shows the ac/dc in you!
You know very well it is not protocol for the GG to entertain discussion with a minister of the Crown in the presence of a lowly commoner from the opposite side.
But since you, like the Nation, have evidence we demand that you identify the other person(s) who was part of the contingent in the waiting room at Pilgrim House.

PS: You are barking up the wrong tree (or should one say peeing against the wrong tree trunk) where MIA direct involvement is concerned. Unless you have incontrovertible evidence to the contrary!

One of the hallmarks that must be imprinted or embossed on the psyche of a nation before it can consider itself worthy of “first world” status is its unswerving drive to enforce the laws of the land and exercise discipline in its civil affairs.
The way things are going one wonders if the reverse of our country’s desire is not happening. From No. 20 on the HDI in 1992 to No. 47 is a good indicator of the trend.

  45. To Miller:
You let me down with that last piece. how could you mention my name or pedigree in the same sentence as AC. He has no electricity. Seriously, I am being told Mia is involved and this is coming form serious folks. Not Owen and his gang.

  46. To miller;
I am not one to pay any attention to that index. we were higher than a number of european countries at one stage, but some of these countries wee staging with the facilities international games that barbados simply can not do or afford to do.

And I would argue having a Freedom of Information Act on the Books is a good first step.

Please forgive me if I am wrong, but has this not been promised?

can you point to any evidence besides the nation story that the investment committee said no to Four Seasons.

I think you and others conveniently missed the central bank’s explanation for why it queried the unemployment numbers.

can you provide evidence of the 3,000 jobs lost between jan, feb and mar 2011. If we had lost an average of 1,000 jobs a month for three straight months there would be no debate on this. it would be obvious.
