Kaymar Jordan, Editor in Chief, Nation newspaper

A letter the group dispatched to Stuart said: “Against the backdrop of growing concern among supporters of the Government and our party, with respect to perceived weaknesses in our leadership of the country, and a sense of drift and inertia arising therefrom, we the undersigned elected members of the Parliamentary Group seek an urgent audience with you to discuss matters of grave concern to us, as well as to chart a path forward for the retention of our party in Government.”

Nation Newspaper Mon, December 12, 2011 – 1:43 PM

The Nation newspaper broke the story last weekend that 11 disgruntled DLP parliamentarians signed a letter which was dispatched to Prime Minister Fruendel Stuart. The message conveyed in the letter was that many on Stuart’s team were dissatisfied with his leadership. BU subsequently confirmed that there is some concern in the DLP camp about Stuart’s leadership and his ability to lead the party successfully into the next general election. The Nation newspaper was very clear in its message to its readership that the letter was signed by the 11 DLP parliamentarians.

Since the newspaper report Ministers David Estwick, Michael Lashley et al have challenged the local newspaper to produce the letter which is alleged to carry their signatures. In fact they have threatened legal action. The Nation newspaper in its most recent statement on the matter has indicated it is sticking to its story. The question which is on the lips of many Barbadians and political commentators is whether the Nation should produce the letter with the alleged 11 signatures and in the process ensure its journalistic integrity, at the same time the reputations and political careers of MPs identified in the Nation newspaper report would effectively be destroyed. To most onlookers the decision for the Nation is a no-brainer, it should produce the letter. One is left to speculate by the refusal of the Nation to produce the letter whether sensationalism is winning the battle over ‘journalistic integrity’.

BU holds no brief for either party involved; we are on the side of truth, in this case journalistic honesty. Yes the matter can be dragged through the law courts of Barbados but with a narrow window of one year before the government is constitutionally required to hold a general election, the damage would have been done. What has added to the political intrigue instigated by this story is why would a leading media house in Barbados based its frontpage stories in recent days on a non existent letter  stated to list 11 signatures and on the flipside some of those named in the letter counter by saying they never signed. Some one is not telling the truth. The Barbadian public deserves to be told the truth. One again has to wonder if the Nation has the letter why it simply doesn’t produce it and remove the anxiety and distraction the matter has brought to the Barbados landscape.

“Accuracy is at the heart of what we do. It is our job to get it first but it is above all our job to get it right. Accuracy, as well as balance, always takes precedence over speed” (Reuter’s Journalism Handbook of Journalism)

What is clear is that when the truth is finally made public in this matter serious damage would have been done to the reputation of one or both parties involved. Could this story play out to compare with the Carol Martindale Hartley Henry saga which has dissipated?

Given the seriousness of this matter Barbadians should be interested in what the Attorney General of Barbados Adriel Brathwaite has to say.

  1. i agree with your comments in its entirety. if there is indeed no letter, then the nation should be dragged before the law courts and made to suffer the same fate of the democrat newspaper the then news organ of the democratic labour party when it published untruths about mr st john.i caanot understand how a newspaper which wants to be regarded as credible could find itself in this cesspool of journalistic stench at this time in the history of barbados and with someone of the reputation of vivian-an gittens at the helm. the way they backed down on the hartley henry issue demonstrated to me that they had lost their integrity but to descend to such depths for the sake of a story is beyond comprehension.

  2. @David. The Nation will have to produce the letter in court if it is sued for libel. What bothers me is the refusal of the Nation to produce it right now and I believe that it would be appropriate, given the public good, to seek a court order compelling its production by the Nation. From the protests of those whom the Nation alleges to have signed the letter, it seems extremely doubtful that a forgery-free letter exists, if a letter exists at all. The fact that the Nation insists that there is a letter and certain people deny signing such a letter, the Police are entitled to demand a copy, because forgery has to be suspected and that is criminal. If any letter at all exists. We will have to wait and see. But we will probably have to wait for some time. Therein, the problem!

So, we must now ask some questions:

    • If such a letter exists, who are the signatories, who leaked it?
    • If no such letter exists, what civil actions and criminal charges and penalties are available in law against the Nation and the reporters responsible?
    • If the signatures are forged, then clearly the Police will have a field day, always provided they manage to tear themselves away from shopping for T shirts and contemplating the length of their shifts.

We also need to ask ourselves, if the information of this letter is false and/or the letter itself is forged, just who stands to benefit? We also need to ask ourselves how long it will take before it is established if the letter exists and is real or forged, and who stands to benefit from the inevitable delay in establishing this?

  3. Hi David,
I know not if the “Allegations” are true or not but the damage has already been done.

  4. @Yardbroom. Yes, but it can rebound with far more destructive force.

I do not believe that the nation newspaper would be baffoons to produce an incriminating article that can have legal consequences if they did not hold in their possession the proof of their proclamation. Rather it is a forgery or authentic, the intellects at the Nation would or should have investigated the letters authenticity and put the matter of production before their legal eagles before doing so. The mere fact that they have suggests that they possess an authentic letter to which they have nothing to fear.

Funny thing though is how they can produce this article on the DLP and many dark doings by the BLP went unscathed.

  6. THEY ARE THE TWO DENISES Prime Minister Freundel Stuart made room for in his cabinet back in June.
    http://www.nationnews.com/articles/view/lowe-on-pms-side/

The DAILY NATION will continue to publish all denials while holding on to the letter written on behalf of eight ministers and three backbenchers.
    http://www.nationnews.com/articles/view/not-me-chorus-begins/

    A couple quotes of interest.

  7. Dr Estwick’s OPEN CHALLENGE to the Nation leaves them WITH NO CHOICE. The paper, in order to save its journalistic integrity, MUST PRODUCE THE LETTER IT IMPLIES THAT HE SIGNED. This is important because, however you look at it, the imputation being put across the WHOLE WORLD is that attempts are being made to overthrow PM Stuart and those attempts are being spearheaded by the ELEVEN persons pictured on the front page of the Tuesday publication of the Newspaper, and Dr Estwick is portrayed as one of them. If it is not true that persons so identified have been involved in any published ACT OF TREACHERY ,then we must censure the Nation. The named persons are therefore left WITH NO CHOICE but to do all that is necessary to protect their good name if they are INNOCENT OF THE GREAT OFFENCE. Of course those who are GUILTY will know that a failed plot is tragic for the plotters.FAILED PLOTTERS DO NOT SURVIVE. When all is said and done, the country may well owe Dr Estwick a debt of gratitude. Journalism must be cleaned up and POLITICIANS must show greater integrity. Dr Estwick’s stand MUST BE SUPPORTED IF HE IS INNOCENT.

  8. This why I am very careful and not only make notes and take photos, I record audio & video separately yet simultaneously as backup to each device. That way no entertainer I review, neither official nor politician I query can say to me “I DID NOT SAY THAT!” Plus if I have documentation, then I make sure to scan & PDF same for storage at different locations as further insurance if topic is of a hot nature.

  9. Peoples the Nation is telling us Sunday is D DAY! The story in today’s paper brags that photos of the “eager eleven” will be published every day until SUNDAY which is the biggest readeship and sales day. We shall see. Estwick and Jones versus KJ and the Nation. The bet is the Nation will produce the letter or overwhelming proof on Sunday or be damned.
    Cant wait.

Don’t forget the St. George Secondary School pornography fiasco. The Nation newspaper had plenty “evidence” back then too but they still lost the Court case which followed.

I don’t think that they have learned anything over the years from that episode.

  12. If i was running the Nation news paper i would force any one who wants to see the letter to carry me to court. The main point here is that there was an attempt to replace a sitting prime Minister and we are allowing the operatives on this blog detract from that dastardly deed. if what I am saying is not true then Dennis Kellman is a liar. And I know him to be a man of integrity. To me whether the letter was signed or not does not take away the fact that a palace coup was attempted by Sinker and Mia.

  13. @ ac
Rest assured ac that I AM AN UNREPENTANT NATIONALIST whose actions are actuated by TRUTH and EQUITY. That being the case I am conscious that every attempt has to be made to protect the integrity of our institutions. If you also align yourself to this basic tenet we can be good friends.

  14. The pictures if they exist will confirm what BU as confirmed on another blog, we have a disaffected group in the party. In fact Minister Inniss inferred as much in his exchange with the press. However, what it does not do is confirm that 11 DLP MPs sign a letter addressed to PM Stuart.

What the unraveling situation confirms if we are to accept that the Nation has irrefutable evidence is that it is prepared to let its appetite for sensationalism trump the need to operate at a high ethical standard.

A Nation story printed on Sunday has been refuted. The Nation has since indicated it will be standing by its story which logically confirms that it has the letter with the 11 signatures. If it has a letter it has a responsibility to populate its ‘journalistic space’ with the truth.

  15. Hmmm…the pitbull/gunslinger and the cowboy-boot wearing excorcist vs Kaymar Jordan.

    I know whose story I would believe…

  16. Hi Amused,
I always pay due attention to your insightful comments…..there is that possibility.

  17. sorry…”exorcist”, not “excorcist”… 🙂

  18. My bet is that there is a letter but not signatures.

  19. St George's Dragon Avatar
    St George’s Dragon

I don’t know if it differs from the paper version but on-line the Nation article says “…..the letter written on behalf of eight ministers and three backbenchers.”
Note the subtle difference – they are not saying it was signed by them.

  20. @St.Georges Dragon

Here is what the paper version states:

“Eleven Government Members of Parliament (MPs) – including seven senior Cabinet ministers – yesterday affixed their signatures to a letter and immediately dispatched it to Prime Minister Fruendel Stuart …”

We can draw our conclusions from the difference in reporting the same story.

  21. Yep, I noted the language. Today’s nation now moves to online language of written on behalf.

  22. One thing I would say about K. Jordan. She is no fool but she is far too sensationalist and often lacks depth. She plays a very hard game though I often question the new mood and style at the Nation newspaper. I may not be particularly impressed with the electronic media style that is passing itself off as print journalism these days but I think she likes to smell a good story. unfortunately, she is extremely bent on sensationalism. The nation will hope that all papers are sold between now and Sunday. ” My bet is there is a letter but no signatures.” I agree, If that is the case, then the head of Ms Jordan, who claims to know it all about the rules and ethos of the fourth estate, will roll. I long for the day (a day Mr Hoyte) when Barbados journalism will live up to the high educational standards we have in this country. The Nation newspaper does not help. Quality and standards have dropped significantly. Mr Joseph thank you for your articles. Mr Wickham, stop pretending to be a journalist. You are not. Journalists are impartial to say the least and you straddle too many fences to be considered credible. Peter Laurie, you tell them the truth in your humourous way. Jordan’s editorials are puerile and facile. Mr Hoyte, Get someone else to write them. The Nation is following CBC with its crap journalism. Just compare it to some other regional newspapers and there is a marked difference in style and content.

  23. The Nation must know . The Nation does not have to produce the evidence when the men want it.The Ntion can produce the evidence when it is instructed to do so. Some politicians suffer from amnesia and they believe that they can call some ones bluff when they do not have the cards. When the letter is produced then you will hear it is a fake. I dont sign so ,My signature is forged and all that crap. The fact that some are not saying will not let it go away. Let the whole group put in a categorical denial.that the letter is as figment of the Nation’s imagination. Let me say as was suggested the careers of the man protesting are in graver danger tthan those who say nothing. These men who would want the people believe that The Nation got it wrong must prove two things One that they did not sign and that they were not in cohots with the others and two that a proxy signature was not allowed . The Nation has to prove nothing. If their name were on the paper the Nation does not heve to be a handwriting expert to know if the signture is that of the affected menber. He must prove that he is not among the ones who are of the same mind as thosae in letter who as yet have not protested. I fear that the protesting ones have breached the rule that there is integrity among thieves. You cannot seek to distance yourself from something which you believe to be right sdimply because it has not turned out right.
As I have said before I think the men were right if they felt Stuart could not lead them to victory to tell him so .Only a fool would let someone carry them to sea and drown them if they can help it. Stuart is the PM but he is not God and so The men have the sacred right to speak their minds. I may not agree with how it was done, but it had to be done.
Trust is a weak plant but it is needed in all areas of life and truat like Caesar’s wife must be above suspicion. I d not know how they can live with themselves or their colleagues. Think on these things

  24. On the subject of journalism have a read of Nation editor Sanka Price’s column today. As you anticipate he writes peripherally to this issue about leadership. The part of his article which makes the intelligent reader sit up and take note is when he writes, “it has to be recognized that late Prime Minister David Thompson while on his deathbed sought to install leaders whom he felt could best provide the stewardship and guidance he would have.” Ok the.

  25. Cassius i am not questioning who you are or whose you are but the mere fact that you can give certain details leaves to believe that you were in some ways involved in the going ons

  26. Jackass write on Bajans Face Avatar
    Jackass write on Bajans Face

The issue is not the existence of the letter – it is clear that the letter exists based on comments of Minister Inniss, Kellman, Lowe, Jones. However the point to be tested is if these 10 esteemed gentlemen and lady actually signed the letter as is being put forward by the newspaper. Are we talking about forged signatures? Scans of signatures applied to the letter? Perhaps the Nation interpreted the wrong MP’s signatures? It may be other DLP members making up the gang of 11 but not necessarily Estwick and Jones.

The Nation and BarbadosToday will no doubt release that letter with the signatures of the dissident MP’s in good enough time (they owe us Barbadians that much) but maybe, just maybe – the MP’s will deny that the signatures are theirs. Therein we would need to call for Integrity in Public Life Legislation as well as Prevention of Corruption legislation which was promised to all Barbadians at the beginning of this term of Government in 2008. Nonetheless, they would have already been tried in the court of public opinion as to their integrity and capability of continuining as the people’s elected representatives in the House of Assembly

    Barbados deserves better.

  27. Finley Peter Dunne was an American writer and humourist and he used to write a nationally syndicated column under the pen name of Mr.Dooley.

One of his most famous lines on the power of the Press was “Th newspaper does ivrything f’r us. It runs th’ polis foorce an’ th’ banks, commands th’ milishy, controls th’ ligislachure, baptizes th’ young, marries th’ foolish, comforts th’ afflicted, afflicts th’ comfortable, buries th’ dead an’ roasts thim aftherward”.

The phrase “comfort the afflicted and inflict the comfortable” has been borrowed and amended over the years and is a classic line from the 1960’s movie “Inherit the Wind” when Gene Kelly’s character offers “Mr. Brady, it is the duty of a newspaper to comfort the afflicted and afflict the comfortable”. In some circles that line has become a tenet of journalism and is now used by some journals as a justification of controversial articles. It would be interesting to know what principles guide the Nation.

That preamble out of the way I believe the Nation should publish the “letter”, it shouldn’t wait for a Sunday; Xmas; Boxing Day or any special day it should publish the letter and let the chips fall where they may. Waiting for a preannounced day lets the public know that they are in the newspaper business to maximise circulation and profits and do not care whose reputation is besmirched.

I also find the coverage more alarming than useful but this is Barbados where every political contretemps is elevated to a second D day landing. Unless this “letter” proves that there were other nefarious intentions I believe that a Parliamentary group seeking an audience with the PM about the state of the Party and their possibility of reelection is the height of their responsibility and it supports my contention that the No.1 rule for an MP is to get reelected. For all the other rules see rule No1.

  28. I am beginning to think that nothing will come out of this supposed battle between the Nation and these besmirched politicians. Ranks will soon be closed and sooner, rather than later, this story will just be another hollywood soap opera transplanted in Bridgetown. If we assume that this saga has some roots in the BLP(I hear talk about Mia being involved) then this is just another political game and we know that these two political parties we have in Barbados lie in the same bed and eat in the same dining. Its all a game.

  29. Of course the point not taken up by those who believe the Nation should not publish is why the change in language in the online version of the story.

  30. Any newspaper uses interesting topics to boost sales, don’t expect the Nation to give all the information they have in one or two editions, they will spread it out as much as possible. However, at some point in time they have to reach a climax and spill the beens. Somehow, I feel that there is a letter but whether or not all these persons are signatories to the letter is doubtful. As I’ve said before, they have to come clean as a united group led by the A.G for me to believe there is no letter.

  31. David
Remember David Thompson in the early 90’s election was to give the names of the IMF advisors Owen had had discussions with, we still await those names, however, that more so than anything else caused him the then general elections. In this case we cannot link any BLP person (as yet) with this humor or should I say scandal.

  32. @the Scout et al

To repeat, the issue is whether the letter signed by the 11 MPs as the Nation newspaper purports. The latest wrinkle is why is the Nation using a different language online compared to its paper edition. Let us keep the argument focused on the issue.

When the letter is exposed we will then asked Sinckler why his categorical denial of knowing anything about the matter.

  33. David
How come integrity is now in focius? Does any of the two parties know that word? In my opinion, there is a letter, whether all thode that is listed have signed is debatable. What is true is while the sitting members who support Fruendel are watching each other and Owen, Mia and Sinckler, can be concreting a MAJORITY party of sitting members from both parties and claim the right to govern the country. Those sitting ministers will regain their portfolios, while some from the BLP will benefit; any team Hammie La is on, he sees it as a winning team. Let’s say eight from the DLP and eight from the BLP forms a party, automatically, they command a majority in parliament and deserves the right to govern. Those who claim they are not on the lists will be paid a few dollars for the misuse of their names and life returned to normal, or they can be offered positions in the new government as payment for the use of their names.

  34. Hi, true to form,
    Dec 14, 2011 at 9:02

Quote: ” These men who would want the people believe that the Nation got it wrong must prove two things One they did not sign and that they were not in Cohots [ ] with the others and two that a proxy signature was not allowed.”
    ———————————–

If the persons mentioned did not sign any letter it is rather simple….they did not.
To imply that they were in cohots with others is a separate argument and has no bearing on the central issue which is, they either signed the letter as was alleged or did not.

People could have a conversation but to say that they jointly signed a letter about matters discussed is wide of the mark, if they did not sign.

  35. Lend me Your ear! Avatar

I don’t know what is happening at the Nation Newspaper but they have now become known for a series of journalistic gaffes! These gaffes are costly and the Nation has a stack of settlements paid out to people they have allegedly defamed and libeled over the years. There is NO journalistic integrity and if there is a letter, they MUST produce it. I don’t care if they are sticking to a story or not, they have put information out there in the public sphere that (whether one supports the DLP or not) is guaranteed to create friction, distrust and angst within the party. Were I a BLP politician, I would be licking my chops! That said, it is incumbent upon the Nation to produce the letter so that it does not also look like some BLP stunt. Indeed, the damage is done and if there is no letter, the Ministers should sue! If there is a letter, print it, signatures and all.
I don’t buy a newspaper or watch CBC or CNN or BBC for fiction. I depend on the press for accuracy and all the tenets that make up for an ethical media. If there is no letter, the journalist should be removed, the newspaper apologise to each Minister they named and have shown on the pages of the paper and the Ministers should seek redress in the law courts. Then of course, they will have to wait as long as Al Barrack for their funds. Let’s hope nobody has to buy paint for anything other than Christmas! LOL.

  36. I am sitting on the fence on this, simply because we have not been provided with the actual letter. And until we are (or not) common sense dictates to me that I am swayed towards those alleged signatories who have denied it – it would be difficult to believe that these people have denied signing such a document if the Nation actually has a copy of the letter with their signatures – whatever anyone may think of them, I would hate to think that we have people as foolish as that running the country. Too many times have I seen the Nation fail, refuse and omit to publish anything on matters of national interest and importance that are fully and irrefutably documented in the public domain for me to get all excited about a letter of national interest, publication of which it is withholding. It takes a while for lawsuits to be prepared, filed and served, so I am now awaiting these with some interest – whether they will be forthcoming or not. A lawsuit such as this is, in my view, likely to cover, not only a civil action, but criminal proceedings as well. So, with great interest, I am waiting now to see what happens. One way or another, it is going to be very interesting. As what amounts to forgery has been alleged, the Nation may be compelled to produce their copy of the letter – to the Police. I cannot see how not, as this alleged forgery would be of the signature of members of Parliament. That makes it very serious indeed.

  37. @ The Scout
That’s what i mean when I mentioned the closing of the ranks in my previous post. I can see such a scenario at least being attempted. But you have also highlighted a serious flaw in our system of parliamentary democracy. At anytime a deal can be struck to remove one regime and foist another on the electorate without that said electorate having a say or any legal recourse to right such a wrong. So one positive out of this saga is that it brings into focus, how easily our system of parliamentary ‘democracy’ can be misused just to satisfy the selfish desires of the power hungry.

  38. Why would a group of DEMs write a letter asking for an audience with the PM when they have regular meetings (Cabinet, party meetings, friday lunch time talks). It would seem to me that this conversation was to be much more than “skipper we need to talk”. I am however impressed by the way the DEM operatives here have been able to side swipe this coup and have people pondering on if there was a letter and was it signed. Kudos to Carson Cadogan and his boys.

  39. This topic has forced me to tear myself away from my busy schedule. While I agree it does not sell well that the entire group has not yet spoken, I don’t believe David Estwick would make such a threat where he not sure of his innocence. If the nation claims to have a signed letter, and Estwick’s name is not on it, then it calls into question the naming of the other 10. Of equal interest is the silence of the Opposition on all of this. I don’t think people understand the magnitude of this. The Nation can be shut down, such as recently happened to another international newspaper. The Nation is looking at separate lawsuits from a group of individuals. This could (in theory) even have been a plot to setback the DEMS which backfired by the unanticipated backlash of Estwick, Jones and Lashley, and the other party may have pulled out and left the Nation to face the heat by itself. Time will tell.

  40. @GoWEB
If this were the UK I would go with your assumption that this could mean the end of the Nation newspaper. However, this is Barbados. I shall repeat. Ranks will be closed and sooner rather than later, it will be business as usual.

  41. @lemmie

Your last comment was disingenuous at best. Most here are agreed that there are disaffected parties on the government side and why. What we have challenged is the journalistic integrity of the Nation in how it has reported the matter. It is a more than subtle difference.

  42. Personally right now I know there has to be a letter.
The question is, does it have signatures or just NAMES anyone can type down a name but a signature is a court matter, Jones and Estwick seem pretty convincing at the moment but…. seems that Sunday is confession day (unless the nation indications Sunday that their lawyer have advised them NOT TO PRINT the letter.

    Time will tell.

  43. A similar situation going on right now in Trinidad as we speak with Basdeo Panday threatening to take back the UNC from PM Kamla Persad-Bissessar and if that wasnt enough, the coalition partners of her People’s Partnership Government have requested an “urgent” meeting with her to review the structure of the coalition….Where there is smoke there is fire. Is Hartley Henry a consultant to the People’s Partnership too?

  44. @ David
The online version is just as bad as, if not worse than the on-sale version. The editor should not have printed anything written by anyone on behalf of any group of people unless that person was authorized by the said group to so do. Again signatures are required . If the Nation can’t produce a letter signed by the 11 people whose photographs appeared in Yesterday’s Newspaper, they are in duck’s guts.
    @Ian Bourne
You are a trained journalists. Thanks again to the ‘old man’, a true true journalist. lol. While you are at it, what is wrong with BFP? Don’t they
comment on current events any longer? Checked over there last night for ‘another view’ but to no avail.

  45. There is a presumption that if the DLP members say they have not seen the letter, did not sign or say there is no letter that that is so. Some of you think that the letter is a figment of the Nation’s imagination. I think not. All the members are not saying anthng which suggests the existence of the missive. The signatures , the signatures ,the signatures. Did the Nation get it wrong? Or how could they get wrong? Do we have signed signatures or stamped signatures What! These men are known to us all so I doubt that the Nation could simply manufacture a signature just like that or misinterpret a signature just so. It would be madness and a absence of jounalistic propriety to guess and not be sure. Furthermore I do not think the Nation would publish a letter from a source coming to that paper without checking the source of the letter. They would know it was a hot potato and do every thing in its power to verify amd check and re check this story. The fact that the editor herself chose to write the story was significant. She made the decision to put the Nation on trial and to give leadership and example by going outthere and writing the story herself. She did not give it to anyone else.. I believe that before publication of this story The Nation would have checked for legal advice and would have felt assued about the authencity of the extract.if the Nation did not cary out due diligence then I would be shocked. The Nation said very early it would be sticking to its story. Let the aggrieved men stick to theirs. Think on these things

  46. However you look at it DLP are the losers
    Study It !!!
There is dissent in the camp–Yes
There is discontent with Freundel’s style -Yes
It comes out now and some deny , some pledge support –but for how long,

Sooner or later, they have to deal with reality
Reality is that DLP cant win with Freundel
And those who support him will sink with him
Sooner or later they have to make a decision

Chris SInckler seems the obvious choice
Donville Inniss is there too along with Dr.Estwick as the front contenders for the post.
Sooner or later REALITY has to be met
There is absolutely no sense in delaying Freundel’s departure from leadership. The longer they wait, the more detrimental it will be

    NOW IS THE ACCEPTED TIME
    CHOOSE TO SINK OR SWIM

  47. Minister Stephen Lashley just came out on VOB 12.30 news and also refuted signing any letter or being involved in any plot to destabilise PM Stuart and questioned the integrity of the Nation. However, he did not deny that they were wranglings in the party ….Read between the lines, more unsaid than said

Kaymar Jordan says the Nation stands by its story and responded to say that its journalists are also of high character and integrity

  48. At some point in time the other 8 or 9 persons mentioned, will have to say or do something. Maybe they are waiting to come up with a united response, even that would show a crack in the unit, because they are coming to the public as one, plus rest are taking very long. We are asking the Nation to produce the latter, and rightfully so, but isn’t it also true that those persons whose names are mentioned need to come forward and disassociate themselves from the letter too? Another bajan saying “there is more in the mortar than the pestle.” Santa Claus might come to town bearing gifts we don’t expect.

  49. @Barbados First
Scroll down to the first paragraph of this posting and you would see the following
‘The Nation newspaper was very clear in its message to its readership that the letter was signed by the 11 DLP parliamentarians’. In the 12.30 did you hear the editor say that she stands by the story written on behalf of the group of parliamentarians? Do you see a shift in position by the Nation Newspaper editor?

  50. GoWeb
It is not right to say the oppsition has been silent, Owen stated from the beginning, as he did during the Thompson/Mascoll bassa bassa, that he is not getting involved in the DLP’s internal problems. There was also a statement from Mia but she appears to be more interested but reserved in her comments. However, both Donville and Ronald seemed eager to pull Owen into the fray. I hope someone is taking FULL NOTES on this matter as it will give CBC TV8 a good gripping local political soap opera to watch. this would made Days of our Lives look like child’s play.
