I received this message from a friend who is trying to inform persons of what happens as a gas attendant. On Wednesday 7 September at Esso Black Rock an attendant was paid $100 U.S.D which she checked herself then took it to a cashier who also verified it with a machine that is provided by the business.

On the day that the gas attendant collected her pay slip she saw her shorts for $200 BDS when she asked management said the USD was counterfeit and they were not taking responsibility for the loss, but to add insult to injury management commented on knowing the machine that checks the money is defective but fail to inform employees of the matter.

  1. The pumps are not calibrated by government, there is an independent contractor who does this work.

Now in the same way the diesel distributors have known about the low sulfur issue and kept quiet about it the same maybe happening with the quality of the gas.

    Who will check it?

  2. Esso Fontabelle & Kirtons gives great service, earlier this year Kirtons was changed from Texaco and service was great too, staff are well trained. Esso Black Rock, most staff are good and one or two has a little attitude, BUT was happend to the attendent was DEAD WRONG I fill up between the two regularly so a lot of the staff know me by seeing me at least. I will try to find out about this situation, the attendant has recourse but, we all know what will happen they will find a reason to have him/her fired withing a few days and someone who really needed the few dollars would be worst off.

What is management now putting the attendent to do? Get revenge by shorting the customers? They could have handled it a lot better, if I were an attendant there i would handle the US$ just like a cheque, only the manager/supervisor would authorise it, as simple as that.

I like Esso and hope that the management would see the error of their ways and refund the attendant without any type of harm to her job.

    I only use Esso because:
Shell goes too quickly in my car & Some Texaco attendants are too thiefing
I had been cheated of gas at Garrison and Eaglehall branches and in Oistins an attendant tried to cheat my purposely out of $10.00 change (a good cussing to him got me my money back) I have never had an issue of money or gas with Esso. But I don’t like to see poor people unfaired so I will try to investigate this.

Shell at Charles Rowe Bridge got some ok attendants there too. Right now there’s a youngster working at de pump and he’s so courteous n pleasant. He’s the only fella there pumping gas so he should be easily identified. Talk bout pleasant. He got manners man. He’s a gentle ‘giant’.

  6. My memorable gas station attendant story.

When working in Bdos in 2004, I stopped for gas at the station (Esso I think)across from Tamarind Cove one night about 8:00 pm, so it was dark. Got my gas, paid the attendant and got my change. Then went into the convenience store for something and back at the car I was checking the cash in my pocket, and was $20.00 short. The attendant, a lovely lady named Anthea I think, saw me checking my pockets and asked if something was wrong. When I said I thought I had lost some money she took me back into the store to ask the cashier if she had seen me drop any money. The cashier said she thought she had seen a guy pick something off the floor and he left quickly. The attendant said she thought she knew the guy, who apparently hung out there regularly, and took me outside to look for him in the lot at the back of the station (in the dark) There was no sign of the guy, so she took me back inside to tell the cashier she thought he had picked up my $20.00. The cashier told the manager who took down my phone number and said they would try to recover my $20.00. I left and mentally wrote off the $20.00. An hour later the phone rang at home. It was the manager saying that when the guy reappeared in the lot Anthea had cornered him and retreived the $20.00 I had dropped in the store. She said I could pick it up at the station. Next day I went back to thank Anthea who was not working at the time. I told the manager to give the $20.00 to Anthea, who I am sure needed it more than I did, and suggested she should given Employee of the Month Award if they had such a programme. I did get back to thank her a few days later and she was very gracious.

If anyone reading this knows that lady, please tell her I still remember her honesty and kindness and say thanks to her again.

Anthea is certainly a Goodwill Ambassados for Service Excellence in Barbados .

  7. I know of some one who was working at one of those gas stations and this person is no fool, always had job in management when they were living overseas and was doing this jig to earn some extra cash on evenings after their regular job and I would hear of stories about the shabby way that the attendents are bieng treated like how many hours they are asked to work and if they are short a few dollars, they would only when they get their pay and there is no proof. What I know that they could not play those games with this person. The person is no longer with the station. I don`t think any of the gas stations in b`dos have automatic sprinklers in case of a fire. I see a few buckets of sand and some extinguishes and I`m wondering if the workers do any fire drills and are taught to use them. Some of the workers are not very smart either, don`t know how to deal with customers so the owners exploits them.

IT PAINS MY HEART ABOUT THE GAS ATTENDANT AND THE MONEY SHE HAS TO PAY BACK EVEN THOUGH THE POLICE WAS CALLED IN. BUT THERE ARE BIGGER ISSUES AT ESSO BLACK ROCK THAT NEEDS TO BE ADDRESS. THE SO CALLED GUARD THAT THEY HAVE WORKING THERE ON MORNINGS CALLED MICHEAL WARD WHO SAID THAT HE IS WORKING FOR THE BOSS. HE IS ALWAYS CUSSING WORKERS AND CUSTOMERS I THINK SOMETHING SHOULD BE DONE WITH HIM AND NOT THE WORKER.

  9. The Gas attendant should be woman enough and honest enough to say that she knew before she got her wages that she only had to repay half. She should also say that she was advised especially on graveyard shifts not to take large foreign currency notes. to make it worst from a hired car at 2.00am in the morning. Wonder if it was a good $100 if she would have sent it in with her money or she would have done what she usually does and buy it and send it to Guyana. A lot of you that commented should really get the facts before gasing off. More can be said but enough for now

  10. @knowDefacts

Was the note checked with a defective machine or not?

    @ David:
    Very good question to knowDefacts.

Was the machine used to check on the authenticity of the US $100 note or not?

  12. Confused Driver Avatar

Instead of crying down the young lady about sending her money to GUYANA or not that is not your business or an issue it is her money and she works hard for it and it is her choice. The management needs to cleaned up their act and dealt with the issue and stop being so defensive. Right now my family and I have a choice to go else where to purchase our gas.

    @ knowdeFacts:

What about the fact concerning the machine. Or is the whole episode a farrago of lies and exploitation of the poor attendant because of her possible immigration status. Was the machine used to check the note?
    Yes or NO!

I think Mr. Boyea should get involved because it is tarnishing the ESSO brand name. It might be a flagship station but the management needs replacing if the poor attendant has been taken advantage of.

  14. As u should be aware the machine does not talk. At the establishment where i work many notes passed the machine but the bank rejected them.
and millertheannuki””assumed there is an immigration issue there is NONE. In businesses there are procedures to be followed. I know at that station u were told to avoid large foreign notes especially on the graveyard shifts. in other businesses she would have had to repay all, management took half the loss, In addition to the machine there are other visual and touch tests that can help with verification. SHE JUST DID NOT FOLLOW THE CORRECT PROCEDURE AND SHE KNOWS THAT.

  15. If the machine is defective why not change it?

Don’t the banks use the same machines?

    @ ETHEL:
“At the establishment where i work many notes passed the machine but the bank rejected them.”

You seem to have a grasp of what goes on at the station in question.

Are you then saying that there is a high probability that the counterfeit note detector machine could have been faulty but still giving a “green or OK” reading? If that is possible it leaves one to wonder about the possibility of other pieces of equipment functioning in a similar fashion, i.e. inaccurately working equipment. Could we the customers, by extension, assume that a similar probabilities can exist with the petrol dispensing pumps and your weighing scales?

    straight to the point

I agree with confused driver the issue isn’t about what she does with her own money, its about poor management and how they tried to take advantage of the woman. If management knows there is a problem fix it and if there is a procedure they should make it available for referral if needed as she may not have known.

  18. you know that my grandmother always used to say that a tief from a tief make the devil laugh. i buy from esso to take advantage of the magna points and i have been keeping records of petrol purchased for some time now. my records indicate that differences in cost for the exact amount of petrol purchases between the three petrol stations i frequent. the management of these stations need to be investigated and the pumps monitored frequently by some govt agency. i suspect they are taking advantage too of the dipsy doodling pricing mechanism now employed by govt.

  19. @balance

The point bears repeating, the management of the gas stations do not have access to calibrate the pumps. The distributor hires an independent/technical resource to supply the service.

  20. I used to work at Esso Black rock before leaving to further my studies. These are facts.
    (1) The counterfeiters are becoming smarter and are getting right some of the features that are looked for in the machine. The machine DOES NOT TELL U IF THE MONEY IS GOOD. They are other features (a) Texture of the paper. (b) Consistency of color. (c) The “suede jacket” feel test. These must be used along with the lamp.
    (2) It is a fact that u are advised against taking large foreign currency on the graveyard shift because the office personnel who would assist in detection during the day ARE NOT ON DUTY on the graveyard shift. You also find that perpetrators targets the graveyard shift especially when there are a few customers being attended to.
    (3) In your training as a gas attendant these facts are told to you. I have been there, I went thru it. I also got duped . Lucky for me it was a twenty.
I have done some investigating of this particular situation as was in formed that the first feel of the note tells u that it was cosmetic.
One needs to ask , When the note was checked was the customer still there?
Rules and regulations are set and we as human beings like to divert from these. If we do then when the “do do” hits the fan we should be (man or woman) enough to accept responsibility without griping and giving UNIFORMED bystanders to impression that Management is so uncaring.
As i said i used to work there and i have seen times when attendants thru there own fault gave customers the wrong product and management stood all the expenses of rectyfying the situation.
At other stations wrong or right attendant pays.
    Check out Texaco Holetown
Would appreciate some constructive and fair comments before I have to leave this beautiful country of ours.

  21. thanks david i can only tell you what my investigations over a two year period up to now have revealed.

  22. I really don't care Avatar
    I really don’t care

Its more to be said about esso black rock sorry about the girl and her money, but let’s talk about the guards workiing the night shift. When customers come and abuse the staff and they don’t approach the customers about their behaviour but instead want to take it out on staff members and instead goes to management and complain for the staff. In my opinion as a customer coming to a popular service station I put myself in that employee’s position of not being harassed by the security. I feel that some of the pesonal matters that happen at the gas station should not be discussed with their friends while they are have an alcholic beverage. Management needs to open their eyes and stop blaming the staff for what security reports to them.

  23. Confused Driver Avatar

Thanks straight to the point for agreeing with me .To i really don’t care you are so correct there are so many issues at esso black rock that management needs to deal with. The guards needs to stop harassing staff and making them shame when they are with their so called friends and deal with what they are being paid to do.

  24. DAVID IAM PLEASED TO REPORT THAT AFTER PURCHASING 31.70 LITRES OF GAS FOR $103.03 FOR THE PAST WEEKS, MY LAST PURCHASE OF 31.70 SINCE THE LAST DECRAESE COST $100.81.
