I had hoped that the advent of March would have put an end to the tedious recitation of the numerous accomplishments  of Black people that have brought change to our lives. Alas, Corey Worrell “In the black” (Nation March 03rd) has now disabused me of that notion.

Once again, Blacks have spent a few weeks looking back to great men and women of the past, while ignoring the calamity in their midst, the destruction of the Black family.  Fifty years ago the great majority of Black families had two parents. Today, less than 40% do and the majority of Black children are growing up with struggling single mothers. The result: an ongoing epidemic of school dropouts, crime, child abuse, and relentless poverty.

This should be no surprise. Children need fathers. And it’s well established that children from broken homes are far less likely to succeed in life. The boys turn to crime and drugs and end up in prison. The girls turn to sex and wind up pregnant, perpetuating the cycle of misery.

How has society responded? By making teen pregnancy easier with cash assistance, medical coverage, and foster care. Meanwhile, good -for-nothing fathers hop from one baby mama to the next without any consequences. We can blame society or racism if we like for these messed up children. But an intergenerational cycle of dysfunction has been unfolding before our eyes, and only Blacks can stop it.

While it was originally hoped Black History Month would foster a sense of self esteem in Black children and adults alike, it seems to now serve more like the child’s finger which is held in front of his eye while he exclaims “Look! My finger can hide the sun!”.

  1. Life is all about family!!

At a time when infants under 1 year were dying at a rate 800 a year in Barbados James Sisnett was born.

    He is now 111.

The CBC program spoke of his mother and father.

His sister made it to 102.

Longevity may be all about genes, what you eat and exercise but it sure helps to get past that first year, well nourished and well protected and two parents have a better chance of getting a child past that first year than one.

Today, we have a sound water supply and good public health practices.

Most infants make it past their first year.

Malnutrition in Barbados is a thing of the past.

The need for two parents to nourish, protect and guide becomes even greater now to give children the chance to develop into meaningful contributors to a population whose size is no longer limited by public health issues and whose demands continue to increase.

    I do agree with you that a child needs both parents; But what seems to be the biggest problem today isn’t only a child having both parents. Many of these parents are children themselves depending on the grandparents to help raise the children. Some of them go and have more children because they figure that the grandparents has their backs. Also many of the parents wants to be their children’s best friend. So don’t want anyone to know that they are grandparents. So instead when out in public act totally different; All of us are responsible for our actions, and should step up and be the men that we need to be; Some men will give their children everything that they think they want or need. But don’t seem to be able to give them quality time; The young folks of today many refuse to be tied down by a child, but does nothing to make sure that they wouldn’t have another one without a plan in mind; Bajans used to be much more loving and attentive to each others needs within the communities. Now it seems every man, or woman for themselves; Respect, Pride and manners seem to be a thing of the past for quite a few of the younger generation; Every day of the year should be recognized as black history. For as mush as the older generation has done to improve the quality of life for their children, and taught them to be responsible citizens. I know my mother did most of it on her own; Her motto was spare not the rod and spoil the child. It worked very well for her. She taught me values, to respect all of God’s Creation, to be presentable at all times. When I became a father, she made it clear that it was my duty to take care of my child and provide for her which I did. Now it seems that all this has changed in Barbados. Younger parents now would kill for name brands and neglect what needs to be done for their children, which thy would leave to the grandparents;

  7. Why two parents is certainly preferable and indeed a boy does need a father-figure, society generally must take some of the blame.

Society’s elders must be role models, society’s sportsmen and sportswomen must be role models, as should teachers, musicians etc.

The behaviours of many of these individuals has been found wanting in the past few years.

While parents may dissent and explain to children the folly of certain behaviours, they are hamstrung if the society seems to generally accept negative actions which cause no obvious retribution or censure by such ‘role models’.

Indeed, who is to blame for selling drugs to the youth? Do the youth import these drugs, or are they imported by lords who have both bagmen and distributors, pushers?

While the pushers in schools may be children, certainly the lords and bagmen are not.

As such, the usual greed and money are the root cause of society’s illness.

While I support the call for a two parent family, many great people have come from being foster children.

But, alternate parenting and a caring society are the required for ‘fostering’.

Children are very perceptive and understand what they see and hear.

From that, they learn quickly as to the do’s and don’ts. One person’s child is not only taught by his/ her parents, but by spending much time at school or university with other’s who have been taught different values that have been left to fester, by the same school system etc.

It is a long road, but Random Thoughts/ Carson raised good points including that children have children and cannot cope.

But, society’s leaders need to stand up and make principled stands, unfortunately, some do not have too much principle.

  8. There was a time when Barbadians bought in to the idea that a village was responsible for raising the family.

It was not about the immediate family but the neighbours, the school, prominent people in society, the parish priest, police and others.

Now we have a leading pastor Senator David Durrant saying that we should forgive Rihanna because she has to follow her handlers? Disappointing to hear the palmy palmy attitude to the image she has elected to portray in the name of accruing money.

This is the problem with our society, leaders, adults continue to usurp their responsibility.

  10. Wow, man wiv no name!

Blaming women again? One would think you like men more than women! Errr…

I think BOTH women and men contribute to the demise of society! Straight up!

ALL of us have to step up and become responsible! Stop making excuses and passing blame, coward!

I’ve done wrong at some points in my life, as have you. Posturing as if you’re perfect…you’re the truest evidence of ignorance!

  11. Black is still beautiful but like T&T within another decade or two pure blacks will be hard to find. The Indian race is mixing extensively with the blacks and forming a new race that will take over most if not all of the region. the pure Indian will show his/her predudice more in an effort to strengthen their race. As far as I’m concerned, Indians are much more predudice than whites. Look at the attack on the W.I cricket term today, the Indians would not have reacted like that had England beat them that way, there was no mistaken identity of the coach as reported. Some of the most beautiful women in biblical times were BLACK.

African tribe populated rest of the world

” The entire human race outside Africa owes its existence to the survival of a single tribe of around 200 people who crossed the Red Sea 70,000 years ago, scientists have discovered.
Research by geneticists and archaeologists has allowed them to trace the origins of modern homo sapiens back to a single group of people who managed to cross from the Horn of Africa and into Arabia. From there they went on to colonise the rest of the world.

Genetic analysis of modern day human populations in Europe, Asia, Australia, North America and South America have revealed that they are all descended from these common ancestors.”

Scientists Find A DNA Change That Accounts For White Skin
    Washington Post ^ | December 16, 2005 | Rick Weiss

Posted on Friday, December 16, 2005 1:35:07 AM by RWR8189

” Scientists said yesterday that they have discovered a tiny genetic mutation that largely explains the first appearance of white skin in humans tens of thousands of years ago, a finding that helps solve one of biology’s most enduring mysteries and illuminates one of humanity’s greatest sources of strife.

The work suggests that the skin-whitening mutation occurred by chance in a single individual after the first human exodus from Africa, when all people were brown-skinned. That person’s offspring apparently thrived as humans moved northward into what is now Europe, helping to give rise to the lightest of the world’s races …………”

The Tishkoff Study Confirms All People Are of African Ancestry

    by Robert Taylor.

” First of all, there can now be no doubt that approximately 200,000 years ago the human race had its origins in Africa. The true “Adam and Eve” were Black. This fact has been widely accepted in the scientific community for some time. But thanks to the Tishkoff team we can now pinpoint the place of origin to Southern Africa – near the current-day South African-Namibian border. From there ancient Africans migrated northeast until they reached roughly what is current-day Ethiopia.
From Ethiopia early humans began leaving the African continent to populate the Middle East and Asia and then gradually spread next to Europe and finally to the Americas… ”

” Fundamentally, this confirms that all people on the planet Earth are ultimately of African ancestry – from the darkest-skinned person in the Congo to the lightest-skinned person in Sweden………”

“This conclusion is based on the scientific theory that the highest levels of genetic diversity are to be found in the populations which have been on Earth the longest because they have had the longest time to evolve and experience genetic changes. The study found that Africans are the most genetically diverse people on the planet and are thus the oldest or original people…”

MUTANT SLC24A5 GO FORTH AND MULTIPLY!
    by H. Millard , 2007

” There is a very high incidence of hereditary whiteness among those who received two mutated copies of gene SLC24A5, if recent research is correct. In fact, approximately ten percent of all humans on earth carry this mutation–the entire white race, to be exact.

No one knows exactly when the mutated gene entered the human population, but those with the gene interbred constantly so that it spread throughout whole families, then communities, then nations and then all of northern Europe. It then jumped to the North American continent with the Europeans who left Europe to settle here.”
    ……………………………………………………………………………………………………….When European skin became white

” Modern humans did not begin to lighten in skin color immediately after entering Europe some 35,000 years ago. In fact, these ancestral Europeans remained brown-skinned for tens of thousands of years. This is the conclusion now emerging from studies of skin color loci.

In 2005, a team of Japanese researchers found that the depigmentation of European skin was partly due to a relatively recent allele at the SLC45A2 (AIM1) gene. They dated the allele to c. 11,000 BP and concluded that it had rapidly supplanted the original allele through positive selection (Soejima et al., 2005).

Then last year, at the Annual Meeting of the American Association of Physical Anthropologists, a molecular anthropologist at the University of Arizona, Heather Norton, presented evidence that Europeans have a similarly recent allele at another skin color gene, SLC24A5. The new allele is dated to 12,000 – 3,000 BP. As she stated during her talk: “The [evolution of] light skin occurred long after the arrival of modern humans in Europe.” (Norton & Hammer, 2007).”
    (Peter Frost’s anthropology blog).

” Solute carrier family 24 member 5 (SLC24A5) regulates calcium in melanocytes and is important in the process of melanogenesis. The Thr111Ala allele (rs1426654[17]) has been shown to be a major factor in the light skin tone of Europeans in a number of studies. It is virtually non-existent in Asian and African populations and is found in about 99.9% of Europeans. It is believed to represent some 25–40% of the difference in skin tone between Europeans and Africans, and appears to have arisen as recently as within the last 10,000 years.

Solute carrier family 45 member 2 (SLC45A2 or MATP) aids in the transport and processing of tyrosine, a precursor to melanin. It has also been shown to be a major factor in the skin color of modern Europeans through its Phe374Leu (rs16891982[24]) variation. Like SLC24A5 it is ubiquitous in European populations but extremely rare elsewhere. ”

Genetic mutation makes those brown eyes blue
    By Jeanna Bryner
    updated 1/31/2008 , MSNBC.

” A team of scientists has tracked down a genetic mutation that leads to blue eyes. The mutation occurred between 6,000 and 10,000 years ago, so before then, there were no blue eyes.

“Originally, we all had brown eyes,” said Hans Eiberg from the Department of Cellular and Molecular Medicine at the University of Copenhagen.

The mutation affected the so-called OCA2 gene, which is involved in the production of melanin, the pigment that gives color to our hair, eyes and skin.
“A genetic mutation affecting the OCA2 gene in our chromosomes resulted in the creation of a ‘switch,’ which literally ‘turned off’ the ability to produce brown eyes,” Eiberg said.

The genetic switch is located in the gene adjacent to OCA2 and rather than completely turning off the gene, the switch limits its action, which reduces the production of melanin in the iris. In effect, the turned-down switch diluted brown eyes to blue.

If the OCA2 gene had been completely shut down, our hair, eyes and skin would be melanin-less, a condition known as albinism.”

” Natural lighter hair colors occur most often in Europe and less frequently in other areas. In northern European populations, the occurrence of blond hair is very frequent. The hair color gene MC1R has at least seven variants in Europe giving the continent a wide range of hair and eye shades. Based on recent genetic research carried out at three Japanese universities, the date of the genetic mutation that resulted in blond hair in Europe has been isolated to about 11,000 years ago during the last ice age.”

    Higher risk for Parkinson’s
” Redheads have nearly a 50% greater chance of developing Parkinson’s than people with other hair colors, according to a 2009 Harvard Medical School study. People with black hair have the lowest chance, followed by brunettes, then blondes, researchers found.

The gene responsible for fiery hair hues is headquartered close to a gene that, if mutated, can increase the risk for Parkinson’s disease. And proximity can be all it takes to make one gene affect another.

“The lighter the hair, the stronger the likelihood of developing the ‘bad’ variant of the Parkinson’s gene,” says Svetlana Kogan, M.D., an internist at Lenox Hill Hospital …”

” Age-related macular degeneration, an eye disease that may cause blindness, strikes women more often than men, and blondes more than other natural hair colors.
“The fairer your hair, the greater your risk,” Kogan says. And if you have blue eyes too, you’ve increased the odds.
“Although the exact link isn’t fully understood, the lack of pigment to protect blondes’ eyes from the sun’s retina-damaging rays may be a cause,” Kogan says.
It’s no secret that fair skin increases your chances of melanoma, but light hair is a risk factor too.
Researchers at Harvard say that no matter your skin tone, blondes should never leave home without slathering on a full-spectrum UVA and UVB sunscreen with at least 30 SPF.

“Blondes produce less melanin, the cells that give your hair and skin its pigment. [It] can leave them especially sensitive to sunburns, sun damage and developing skin cancer,” says dermatologist Joel Schlessinger, M.D., president emeritus, American Society of Cosmetic Dermatology and Aesthetic Surgery…”

Black women are known to have higher bone mineral density, associated with stronger bones, than white women. New findings suggest that one reason for this may be due to the slower rate of bone loss among elderly black women.

    Does Melanin Protect Hearing?
    Posted on: October 2, 2006
    By Jess Dancer, EdD.

” On average, black adults hear better than white adults, and women hear better than men, according to a recent study by scientists at the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH).1 Previous research has reached similar findings about racial and gender differences, but the new study involved the largest national sample to report such findings.

Genetics or the amount of noise exposure may explain the difference in hearing ability between women and men, while the racial difference may be related to the skin pigment melanin. Some scientists believe having a larger amount of melanin protects black people from noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) as the years go by, said NIOSH researcher William Murphy, PhD. Melanin may play a role in how the body removes harmful chemical compounds caused by damage to the sensitive hair cells in the inner ear….”

Researchers at the University of Chicago have shown that melanin acts like a “neutralizing sponge” inside cells in the retina to soak up and destroy reactive oxygen species. These free radicals are energized by light and thought to play a major role in macular degeneration, the leading cause of blindness in people over age 60. The disorder is far more prevalent among whites than blacks.

The researchers showed that increased melanin can protect retinal pigment epithelial (RPE) cells, which lie underneath the macula, from free-radical damage and help prevent cell death. They further demonstrated how melanin scavenges the harmful free radicals produced by high-energy blue or ultraviolet light, soaking them up and neutralizing their effects.

“We now have molecular-based evidence to support the epidemiologic data that points to the protective effects for melanin,” said researcher Kourous Rezaei, MD, an assistant professor of ophthalmology and visual science who is testing ways to boost melanin levels.

The lack of melanin in bodily tissues, called albinism, often is associated with hearing loss. The condition combining albinism with hearing loss that is probably best known to audiologists is Waardenburg syndrome …”

” Hearing loss also is associated with vitiligo. Characterized by smooth, white patches in the skin, the condition is caused by a loss of melanocytes.”

” After accounting for a number of factors such as age and previous noise exposure, the researchers concluded that blacks were two-thirds less likely than whites to have hearing loss.

It’s not clear why the risk was so much lower in blacks, but some research has suggested that pigment produced by cells in the skin and inner ear may protect the inner ear by absorbing free radicals, said study leader Dr. Frank Lin, an assistant professor in the otology division at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine and a core faculty member at Hopkins’ Center of Aging and Health.”

  20. just asking a question? if there is all this evidence to support the view that the Black Race was on this earth first and was responsible for the emergence of the other races and were the first discoverers and inventors how have we managed to find ourselves at the bottom of the social ladder by allowing the other races to surpass us in all facets of life so much so that we have to celebrate black history this and that to highlight our achievments from creation which no one seems to care about? how is it that the caucasian race and indian race if there is such a thing do not have to celebrate white this or white that? how is it that despite all our achievments we always seem to be begging for attention? why do we curse these races behind their backs but subjugate to them in front of our faces? why? Why?Why? because we say BLACK is BEAUTIFUL with our lips but rather than live and express it in our hearts we continue to mask our importance behind such smokescreens as Black History Month. It is time we stop playing catch-up but when?

  21. When Black people stop hating themselves and come together as one people. The other down trodden races like the Indians wherever they settle remain undivided and unsegregated. Where the Black man rather than strengthening the mind saw improvement as gravitating to middleclass material ideals ans ideas, races like the Indian concentrated on unifying their own people. Hence the emergence of powerful communities within societies bearing the titles Asian or Chinese etc. These communities shield their vagrancy problems by creating shelters for their poor and needy. They open their own clubs and never discriminate against their own kind like us Blacks do. They maintain premises where they can keep their own social events without hindrance or social and mental confusion. They lent money to each other and strengthened their financial base realizing that money is power. Perhaps if we as a Black race can emulate these things then one day then the other races would come to recognize us as equals and not mendicants or equals moaning and groaning for the attention of the master or the crumbs which fall from the master’s table.

  22. Why do us blacks have to be constantly marketing ourselves through selfserving but token platforms like “Black is Beautiful”? is it because we suffer from a ingrained inferiority complex as a result of our skin pigmentation which connotes the doom and gloom which goes with darkness instead of light? If so, if we truly recognize ourselves as a race like the other races do, how can we rid ourselves of this inferoirity complex dilemna?

  23. @balance

Who told blacks that they were inferior! Simply put garbage in garbage out. Now for some it is hard to rid themselvees of that notion’ Don’t blame us. Blame the teacher!

  24. Unlike the other marginalised races/peoples, the educated black middleclass concentrated on carving out a class enclave for itself to separate it from their less privileged brothers. Rather than consolidating their gains in uplifhting the image of their race sought refuge in white and other mixed clubs where they were only tolerated because of what they can offer. The thought of solidyfying their racial independence and dominance like the other races do by forming exclusive clubs open to blacks only seemed never to cross their mind; rather, their spent their energies begging and protesting for acceptance in environments other peoples had carved for themselves unwittingly over the years sending the perhaps inadvertent but distinct message that ‘we as a people do not feel good about ourselves but need to be with you’. When that failed, to separate ourselves from each other by means of distinction, we sought membership in Lodges with badges and sashes and trinkets and other erstwhile endeavours like our forefathers before us had done during the years of slavery. Today we are still faced with the younger generation of blacks yearning social acceptance from without and creating stumbling blocks for less affluent blacks from within. Thus our gravitation to membership of organisations like Lions, Kiwanis, Rotary instead of tried, tested and proven organisations like Trade Unions.

  25. balance all of what you said in the above but it is true goes back to “Cause and effect on ones psyche.” That is one of the many problems brought about by indoctrinating the mind in a negative way what we are seeing manifested here is the rippling and negative results . We as a black people have been severely damaged Psychologically and there is no getting around that most of us have tried to deal with whatever problems or road mines that have been put in our way by simply choosing to ignore or side stepping them or by connecting to others who are more affluent and who can further help us move upward faster than in our own race who is still trying desperately to get out of the quad mire given the hand they have been dealt.

  27. WHY should blacks be made to feel that the other races are prejudiced against us, what stops us from uniting in such a way that they would feel prejudiced against as well? there we go again AC, looking still for someone/something to blame for our lack of self esteem when we were here first, were the first inventors and are more educated. An indian friend once told me that we go to school too long. His view.

Who created the myth that blacks are inferior ?
Who erased the contributions of blacks from history ?
Who forced blacks to worship a white man and refer to him as the creator /GOD ?
Who robbbed blacks of their true history and culture ?

  32. @ balance.

  33. Who robbed blacks of their rightful place….?

    Blacks!!!

By pursuing the forbidden fruit of materialistic possessions, and following those who define their very existence by the things that they possess, we have condemned ourselves to our now deserved status.

What do you all think was meant by the prediction long ago that in these last days “the first shall be last, and the last shall be first”?

By rejecting the God of RIGHTEOUSNESS, JUSTICE and LOVE and dedicating ourselves instead to the pursuit of money and ‘things’, (just review BU’s popular topics) – we Blacks have chosen to follow the ways of ‘others’, and we have never been very good at accumulating, retaining, and building up materialistic possessions.

….no surprise then that we are at the bottom of the heap.

In the realm of building on ‘love, forgiveness, righteousness and justice’ however, blacks are insuperable….

  34. @Bush Tea

What matters is how we disrupt the ‘progression’.

All on BU know your answer 🙂 but others who operate in the temporal realm might want to be a little more pragmatic on the issue of living life.

  37. @ David
“Bush Tea’s answer” as you put it, is actually a very simple and pragmatic one…. For temporal application.

….it is simply for Blacks to wise up to where our true strengths lie, and to what actually MAKES SENSE.

Surely you, David, must have come to the conclusion by now that the current priorities of our society are nothing but illusions…?
Cuddear, look at those who ALREADY have all the things on which we place great value, – and see if they are happy, contented, fullfilled, self actuated or in any such state as a result of their ‘success’….. Yet the rest of us continue to dedicate our very existence to these IDENTICAL goals. …..and we don’t learn from history…

Even when one is able to actually achieve all of one’s temporal dreams ( ‘a la DT of recent glory) ….what does it profit in the end…?

To use a Bushie analogy, it is as if Blacks have been dealt a winning hand of cards for the game of Hearts, but have chosen instead to play to the rules of ” suck- me- well”.

  38. @Bushie

Understand your point well although the name you should have used is LP whose millions will probably be frittered away in ligation for as long as he shall life.

Hope you are not saying though that the acquisition of material things should not be a priority for Blacks because material wealth is a means as well to helping others achieve noble objectives – however it must be combined with other priorities.

  39. @ Bush tea .
Bush tea you scored zero on the test .
Bush tea you are a liar, bring the evidence to support your idiotic statements .

  40. @ bush Tea .
Please review the videos posted by taseti and seti.

” Who robbed blacks of their rightful place….? Blacks!!! ” – Bush Tea.
where is the evidents to support this statement ?

  41. Colonel Buggy Avatar

Black is beautiful! we all proclaim, but I’ve heard many a black person stated most strongly, that given a second term of life, no way would they return to this earth in their original hue.

  42. @seti

Why do you feel you have to call Bush Tea a liar for expressing a view?

  43. some people are stilling wishing and hoping that all blacks would “pull themselves up by the boot straps” and assimilate into society as if the past does not have anything to do with their present. For most blacks they have managed to accomplished much without a boot fartherless a strap. They have assimilate and move on in spite of . Others have not and how do we blame them. Now case and point we have seen the invasion right here in our own Barbados how people with clout and money can piss all over those without and mostly it is blacks who are being given the shi;;;ty end of the stick. Now rewind your thoughts to 1800 hundred when blacks didn’t have a fighting chance and see how it could be a life term detriment.reason why i am making this point is that the same system which took advantage of Blacks is still alive and well the only difference is that most of us are vocal enough and educated enough to speak out.Blacks have been docile and silent to those who wronged them out of fear however in return they have turned that anger on their own out of resentment and mistrust a trait which was taught through master slave mentality/

  44. Very interesting. I watched all 4 parts.

  45. Thanks Hants, got a little emotional watching these videos.

  46. Black History :
The Moors introduced the ” common bath ” to the Europeans of southern France , Spain , and Portugal . They introduced the use of “undergarments” and ” linen wear ” from 711 C.E. ( See Jane Soames ,THE COAST OF BARBARY; deGraft-John-son, AFRICAN GLORY; Stanley Lane – Poole , THE MOORS IN SPAIN .)

  47. This is dedicated to all the boys and girls , hope this lesson in Black History inspires you .
