It is with much intrigue, occasionally accented with a hint of amusement, that I observe the spectacle presently transpiring in our political landscape. On this occasion, I draw specific reference to the legacy of fiendishness which Opposition Leader Owen Arthur appears to be fashioning for himself. Where ever you go, there is some manner of discourse regarding Mr. Arthur’s acts of fiendishness over the pass months. Whether it be the manner in which the removal of Mia Mottley as Opposition Leader was executed, the so-called tribute to the late David Thompson which upset his widow and others, or the statements made about Mara Thompson’s nationality. He has implicated his predecessor to be the reason for losing the By-election as well as for the depleted state of the party’s election fund.

Concomitant with this fiendish image, an opposite image has been bestowed upon Mia Mottley. She is now regarded a mistreated, vulnerable woman. We seem to be conditioned to believe that  an antagonist cannot exist without a protagonist nearby. While I cannot dispute that Mr. Arthur’s behaviour can be likened to that of a “Black Knight”, I am hesitant to jump on the “Mia Mottley as a White Knight” train. Have we forgotten that this same individual was expelled from parliament just last year for refusal to respect the Chair? and though this was the first expulsion, it certainly was not the first display of the behaviour which triggered said expulsion.

  1. BU sources have advised for some time that when Mia Mottley was in control of the party there some concern at the heavy handed way she operated. This succeeded in alienating many members. Perhaps the chickens have come home to roost?

Nobody holding that against MIA, Nothing wrong for standing up for what you believe. At least she not thiefing like OSA who put the campaign contribution in hisw personnel account and act like it was alright to do so .To think he is still a member of parliament . Wunna-all miss me or wah? Well I back fa de long-hawl.

    ……………………………………………………………………
    My dearest Bonny,

Please follow my advice and go to facebook. Would you please type in “Bajans Against The Return Of Owen Arthur” in the “search” bar and see how the young people are peppering our former P.M., OSA, with cartoons.
Indeed, my dear, BU would cause serious rucktion if it decided to borrow some of the cartoons there. And, please do not burst a vein in your head when you view these serious pics.

Someone asked them to ease up on OSA, but Ian Bourne, of all people, said “No!”

  17. “Bajans Against The Return Of Owen Arthur”

Please check; the majority of those on that site are persons in their twenties or thirties ….with university education. Is there a message there somewhere?

  18. Oh Shite, look who now show up… Bonny Peps and ac back tagedda again … Ah lotta people t’ought you did dead an’ gone …!

  19. Why did Owen Arthur not do the tribute to Auntie Olga himself but Dale Marshall did it? Is it because She was born in Guyana while Mara – who he said is not “acceptable” and an “affront” was born in St. Lucia?

  20. @ac

Standing up for what you believe can be accomplished without disrespecting the chair. You cannot rise on a Point of Privilege in this system of parliament. You have to request it before hand and the Committee of Privileges would review the request and either grant or deny the request. To repeatedly rise on a non-applicable point after you’ve been asked to be quiet is not very becoming. When you are right about something and do something wrong to air it, the rightness of the point you make is dampened by the wrongness of the method.

As stated, this isn’t to pull down or big up any party. Who is wrong will be called wrong. Just saying…. there is no nobility in what transpired that day, by any measuring stick.

  21. @BONNY PEPPA

CA OU CA FAIT MA FILLE? WUH LOSS…Girl chile WELCOME BACK! YOU DOAN KNOW HOW WE DID MISS YUH. A BIG HUG TO YUH AND ANNUDA ONE. now de peppa sauce gine start burning wee.

  22. BU has been receiving emails querying why Dale Marshall and not Arthur delivered the tribute to the recently departed Dame Olga.

    Is this really an issue?

It seems Owen is being placed under the microscope in all that he does.

  23. @GW
Iam certain that Mia is and was aware of Parliamentarian procedure . However apparently she was being ignored several times for a request to speak and move whch she took resulted in her being expelled. That being the risk she took knowing the immediate result. Hiwever she was standing up in principlefor what she believes and was being ignored for whatever reason

  24. OSA knows that every breath and word that he utters is being viewed under n a microscope. Smart moveon this one. I don’t think so.! Or maybe he run out of words! Only time will tell! HA! HA!

  25. @ac

Members of parliament have used such a strategy to force national attention on an issue. It is the equivalent of what the Americans call philabustering.

  26. @ David
    Agree!

  27. Truthman Burton Avatar

This is all “poor-rakey” silly talk about another set of foolishness manufactured to get Owen out of the way. FOOLISHNESS!

If you all want to talk about Committee of Privileges, Check to see when they are going to do something about Dr.Debt pulling a gun in parliament and brandishing in the face of another member. A fine example to young people in Barbados, that! You notice the amount of GUN-PLAY ‘BOUT HERE SINCE THAT ALLEGED INCIDENT?

  28. Truthman Burton Avatar

Mind yuh, dR.dEBT’S Stupid action is not the only reason for the wide-spread unprecedented gun play in the country. The young people can’t get no work … all they are getting from the DLP IS A LOT LOT OF FETES! That is the DEMS answer to the Youth to alleviate poverty, high cost of living, high unemployment …. HOLD A BIG DUB FETE!

  29. Are we happy to tossing political ‘Molotov’ cocktails now? The whole world is crumbling before our eyes yet we continue to drown in a pool of partisan political nonsense? Why do we boast of of being educated if we can’t deduce some basics?

On another blog Anthony asked what BU meant by questioning the former administration’s approach at a time of economic boom. We claim to be developed yet our GDP is totally dependent on export of services e.g. tourism, International Business etc. Would it not have made sense in the boom time to build out an alternative energy sector which would reduce dependence of fossil energy, creating new jobs and reducing foreign exchange in the process? Would it not have made sense to aggressively facilitate an entrepreneurial, we are not talking about retailers and wholesalers in the distributive sector i.e. buying and selling we are talking about leverage our pool of so-called educated talent. Then again our educational system has been designed to cater to the traditional system, so we have a problem. Our lawyers and accountants who cost taxpayers so much are feeding off the system. How about the cultural industry? Isn’t this something we can developed? Why continue to milk a model which is not conducive to our sustainable development?

Yet we continue to yak about BLP DLP as if politicians are the be all and end all. Come on people, its time to DO.

  30. This juvenile talk about Owen Arthur and Mia, is like teenagers in love. One guy is trying to get up to another guys girlfriend and instead of telling her his values and what being with him can do for her, he spends much time criticising the girl’s boyfriend. This usually results in him being rejected or at best both of the losing their pick for athird fella. The DLP instead of showing the bajan voters what they can do for them, they are spending much time finding fault with the BLP, some bajans are turning towards the BLP while others are looking for an alternative other than either of them. Right now the DLP is in the driving seat, the boyfriend of the voters, use your position to strenghten your position instead of focussing on any challenge, the only time that happens is when you are not condident in your position.

  31. http://www.nationnews.com/articles/view/a-big-welcome-for-visitors/

“If we make our citizens comfortable and happy then when you come here our citizens can gleefully help you to enjoy Barbados. Government intends to continue and deepen that process of of looking after the enjoyment of our citizens”.

I will have you know that the DEMS do not only hold dub fetes. They host some very nice parties at Ilaro court every now and then.

  32. For all of the talk about restructuring, I think the present administration still believes that the current model, is still the best one.

  33. @ The Scout “The DLP instead of showing the bajan voters what they can do for them, they are spending much time finding fault with the BLP,”

None of the DLP bloggers are DLP Ministers. Other than the occasional blog by Hartley H, we DLP supporters are not actively involved in the running of the DLP or Barbados.

The BLP instead of showing the bajan voters what they will do for them, are spending too much time finding fault with the each other and widening the chasm in the party created by Owing and co.ltd.

If the NCF and the CBC, both government agencies, over the years have been unable to form any significant partnerships aimed at producing and showcasing Barbadian cultural products, does this not suggest that said culture industry has been deemed unprofitable by the powers that be?

  36. My apologies for double posting sir.

  37. The Scout wrote “This juvenile talk about Owen Arthur and Mia”.

You do realise that ousting a Leader of a political party is not child’s play so don’t come with the crap about girlfen boyfren.

Ousting Mia has created a division in the party which I hope will be “fixed” so you can continue to provide the people of Barbados with a strong vibrant Opposition party.

  38. Bonny, glad to see you back on the BU trail. You are no doubt the number 1 blogger (LoL) and truly missed when we don’t see you penning.

Man you more popular on BU than David the owner. (don’t get carried away doe)

I wish you healthy years ahead.

Yet from 2003-2007 ( 2001 -2002 for sep 11 fallout) there where many big project that needed to be done. We had won the bid to host cricket world cup and need to improve the infrastructure, the coast guard and courts need news homes. the prison burnt down. Fiscal responsibility also argue that you can not add too much debt at the same time. I guess if there was no cricket world cup you argument would be sound but its not. the country had other obligations to it people.

Now for the debt finance issue. Now there two things that drive interest rates the prime rate and your credit score. As Prime rates are near at time lows this was an excellent point to refinance some of the old debt that was gotten when interest rates where much higher. You don’t refinance during high interest rate period unless you credit score so high that your guaranteed prime. So it always make sense to refinance in recession once the rate make it very attractive.

I remember we had this discussion already where what could be done to improve the economy, it wasn’t really commented on and had very few suggestions think it was what maybe two or three us bouncing ideas off maybe david you should have made the stay at the top. We questioned why should you bring back up the infamous cheque when the issue was bound it and you said it was still relative. the talk of the debt, transfer , the excess of government expenditure is still relative since nothing being done about it.

  40. @anthony

BU explained the symbolic use of the cheque and we agreed to disagree on its use.

Regarding your point about commitment to CWC2007, why do you believe this is a decision we had to take if we were committed to recharting the productive sectors of Barbados? Didn’t T&T with all its oil money satisfy itself with the ‘Brown Package’?

As an open economy with a fix exchange rate regime are you not forgetting that when we moved from BOOM to the inevitable BUST it would have resulted in destruction of wealth? Where was the vision?

The problem with us is that we have become fat and lazy in ideas are are quite happy to milk the model which has served well for the last 30 years. We lack the will to depart from old ways, yes we can generate ideas but they are others who we pay to educate and lead that are to proactively guide the process, the masses can and should protest, that is our right.

  41. @Raw Bake

The example you cite isn’t it yet another example of our political ignorance and immaturity? We bandied about the benefits to be had by signing the EPA especially as it would have encouraged opportunities for the culture industry and what? Minister Chris Sinckler was very vocal on this subject, now what?

  42. David | February 5, 2011 at 10:52 AM |

Yes I believe the cheque issue has sorted it self the out expense levels have not.

I think we all believed that we had hoped for more from CWC in hindsight maybe we should have taken one of the lesser packages but as they say hindsight is 20/20. No one expected indian and pakistan to be kick out so early. If they didn’t maybe we would have been singing different fortune now about it.

We moved from boom to bust to boom again same as in this picture it how long it takes to get to the boom to worrying picture for many people. As for vision When wikileak spread the article that owen wanted to pursue renewable energies a few blogger called it lies.

It our right to protest it also our right to side if they done no wrong. you can’t have a one way street can we ?

What we all agree is the status norm can’t continue any long. we must diversify. Will either do it now that they future has no obligiation is another matter ?

  43. The diversification that is required will not come about with the current generation of leaders in the public and private sectors.
There has to be a change in the mindset and this will have to start in the education system. Until that system is geared towards developing and nurturing creativity and ingenuity, we will always be singing the “we must diversify” tune.
There is little that Barbados can produce that others places cannot produce in greater quantities and more economically.
The focus has to be on developing and promoting a “Genuine Bajan” brand.

  44. @Hants

How do you think this division can be fixed? In my view one of the leaders has to go. I can’t see “healing” coming with both leaders still in the party.

  45. Hants
Ousting Mia was bad for the BLP and has split the party down the centre, however, they are not behaving like the DLP did when David & Co ousted Mascoll. The now P.M Stuart is alleged to have said DT was like poison to the party and David Estwick was on the airwaves lambasting David Thompson, then there was Denis Kellman who had his own private war with David over leadership, so what was bad for one party is just as bad for the other. A new party with new thinking is needed, both parties need to wheel and come again.

  46. @The Scout

In an interview after David Thompson’s death Minister Kellman gave some insight into the relationship between Thompson and himself. To cut a long story short the issue was not about Thompson but more about Henry. One can only assume the same rang true for Stuart and Estwick.

  47. Mashup & Eyespy

  48. @anthony

You are an intelligent guy, the CWC businesscase was built on sentiment and not viability. Who spends half million dollars based on ‘legacy’? As you wrote its hindsight but the decision having been made by a leading economist one must question the judgement.

We have to leverage the enormous investment we have dumped in education. We cannot continue to travel the same cart road. Where is the sense in that?

  49. David
Get real. Freundel Stuart made some derogatory, nasty comments about David Thompson when he ousted Mascoll, they were not make to Hartley Henry, he called the name of the person to whom the comments were directed. Similarly David Estwick went on the VOB call-in programme a lambasted David Thompson and even said he would not serve under himas party leader. Everyone knows about the clashes with David Thompson and Denis Kellman whwn it was only those two in opposition and David gave up the leadership of the party and appointed Mascoll to take over instead of Kellman. Now you are trying to deny this happened? David I’m disappointed in you, have you been bought too?
