Anarchy (definition):

  • No ruler ship or enforced authority.
  • A social state in which there is no governing person or group of people, but each individual has absolute liberty (without the implication of disorder).
  • Absence of government; a state of lawlessness due to the absence or inefficiency of the supreme power; political disorder.
  • Absence or non-recognition of authority and order in any given sphere.
  • Acting without waiting for instructions or official permission… The root of anarchism is the single impulse to do it yourself: everything else follows from this.
  • Anarchy is the basic rule of a no rule society.

How many of the above fully or partially apply to present Barbadian society?

  1. With respect to RULES one can say that Barbados does fully comply, as the saying goes “Barbados has a Rule for everything and ENFORCEMENT of nothing”.

No enforced authority reigns”

  1. Politically it appears that both dominant parties are leaderless and have no definitive direction leading to a stable society and country. It would appear that personal ambitions, pocket lining, bragging etc. all take president over the countries daily and long term affairs.

Political individuals appear to have absolute liberty”

  1. There is definitely not an Absence of government, however the opposite is TRUE. The government employees approximately 20 to 25% of the entire countries workforce, when typical democratic societies employ less than 1% of their workforce as civil servants. Only SOCIALISTIC enterprises have such high civil servant ratios.

Inefficiency of the supreme power”

  1. Absence or non-recognition of authority and order in any given sphere. For this a few items come to mind:
    • QEH cardiologist fiasco,
    • Greenland landfill,
    • Flyovers,
    • NON-Windows to the Sea,
    • Failure to pay court ordered settlements(Barack),
    • Un-tendered million dollar contracts,
    • Senior Civil Servant ownership of Needhams Point development,
    • Lack of Building Code,
    • Firearms in the house of parliament,
    • Drinking and Driving as a pastime,
    • TS Tomas causes havoc, God forbid it was a Category 1,2,3,4 or 5,
    • Law and Order deteriorating, robberies up, murders up, theft up,
    • In fighting in senior police ranks with no government intervention,
    • Non registered vehicles abound,
    • Arch Hill apartment collapse and laughable investigation,
    • Chief Justice appointment,

This list is endless, however in the interest of protecting trees; I’ll draw the limit to the few items above.

  1. Acting without waiting for instructions or official permission… The root of anarchism is the single impulse to do it yourself: everything else follows from this.
    • Majority ruling parties sometimes become a power unto themselves and ignore established procedures, rules, regulations and protocols in the belief that they know better and its best to proceeded expediently, as it’s in the public good. The truth being is that by ignoring the established procedures, allows for more pocket lining to take place while hoodwinking the general taxpayer. The un-tendered multi million dollar ABC Highway contract comes to mind as an example, Justification “we need it done for world cricket”.
  1. Anarchy is the basic rule of a no rule society.
    • Daily one reads in the news paper, hears on the radio or sees on TV, this or that Government Minister announcing or proclaiming some new miraculous strategy or development that is going to save the country from all ills and evils. Needless to say nothing happens, except that a couple of years later on some other Government Minister announcing or proclaiming some similar miraculous strategy or development that is going to save the country from all ills and evils.

As they say “what comes around goes around”

The country is slowly but effectively heading towards the edge of the Anarchy precipice, the question being, how close are we to the edge and can we step back and save ourselves.

Dear Mr. Thompson (do you have a first name Mr.?)

I am always leery of people who call themselves Mr. and then try to tell me what to do.

Why do you make it seem that independent, creative, rational, intelligent THOUGHT and ACTION is a bad thing?

And why do you seem to believe that we would be better off if we waited for the (no first name) Mr.’s of this world to tell us what to do.

When did God appoint you ruler and judge over us?

If you would consider breadfruit, beans, and okras that I grew myself (with a little steamed flying fish) good grazing)then yesssss!!!!! I am on good grazing.

    Enjoying it right now.

I salute good old fashioned Bajan ground food.

    * $75 Million borrowed by the Barbados Labour Party Government for the West Coast Sewage project, but where is the money?

How wrong this article is. The ‘island mentality’ is a deliberate strategy, designed by our colonial masters and passed on, such that no one would wish to take over Barbados by force, knowing that little benefit would be derived.

Remember that the great E.W.Barrow called the Civil Servicenot the ‘army of occupation’?

So, the attitude of some is carefully manipulated to chase would be marauders from our desert isle.

Mind you lad, when these islanders work, they are very good indeed old boy. Just have to have some benefit for them, some rum or some good food, or some delicious bit of crumpet can do wonders, don’t you know. Nothing these islanders like more than that.

As for ”“Inefficiency of the supreme power” There never is an absence of the Supreme Power, anywhere!

As for your queries, here are the reasons:

    ■QEH cardiologist fiasco,

Obviously a misunderstanding, probably the QEH management thought that we send all serious patients overseas anyway….all the rich go overseas.
    ■Greenland landfill,

We just need to find what to fill it with. Now it may be a beautiful park, see what procrasstination can do?
    ■Flyovers,

Haling these has probably saved countless lives, imagine all of the twenty year olds in racing cars flying over the edges?
    ■NON-Windows to the Sea,

This is a deliberate strategy to ensure a privately built protective seawall is in place

■Failure to pay court ordered settlements(Barack),

So what, the Government just makes Barack richer by interest by delaying, what is the issue?
    ■Un-tendered million dollar contracts,

Tendering is bureaucratic, Barbados has become so advanced that this issue has been eliminated.
■Senior Civil Servant ownership of Needhams Point development,
Brilliant move, ensuring that a great landmark is retained in local ownership.
    ■Lack of Building Code,

Palm leaves, beaches, nubile lasses to chase, who needs a building code?
■Firearms in the house of parliament,
Good, this further protects Parliament against unwanted security threats.
■Drinking and Driving as a pastime,
This is really the only problem above. One should only drink if someone else drives. Maybe if Government provided a nubile lass to drive each drunkard home, more people would adopt this option.
■TS Tomas causes havoc, God forbid it was a Category 1,2,3,4 or 5,
Oh, a second point that may be worthy, I say redevelop the caves and use them as hurricane shelters (and tourist attractions).
■Law and Order deteriorating, robberies up, murders up, theft up,
Robberies and murder everywhere, from Moscow to New York.
■In fighting in senior police ranks with no government intervention,
Government intervention in an independent body and separate body, no old boy.
    ■Non registered vehicles abound,
Yes, the people who used to drive donkey carts now use cars. So? Rather a quaint approach.
■Arch Hill apartment collapse and laughable investigation,
That was sad, a third point on which we must look further.
    ■Chief Justice appointment,
Well, surely there is someone in acting appoitment, another wonderful invention left by the colonial past. So, what is the issue.

    Have Fun!

  9. My point of view is Mr. Thompson, in his article, does not make any suggestions as “WHAT TO DO”, he’s merely stating well known facts and pointing out a direction which the country appears to be heading. I believe generally most rational individuals would consider Anarchy and undesirable direction.

  10. @ Wily Coyote

So, where is the line to be drawn between anarchy and civil disobedience?

Do you think that the crap Bajans are forced to endure daily would be accepted in other countries with a more unforgiving citizenry?

  11. @de Hood. I once almost got nailed to the cross for saying that We Bajans are a nation of cowards, and I have promised never to say it again.

  12. @ Nationalist

Cowards? Nah, I would not use such a nice description! The word I am thinking about that best describe a Bajan is “SHEEP”! Now go figure out why.
