The article raises good points, but it falls into the trap of taking argumentative points far past the support of actual evidence.
For instance, current evidence suggests that Vitamin D deficiency– commoner in cold countries, relatively rare in the Caribbean– can reduce our natural resistance to viral infection. Treating this deficiency with vitamin D can help restore resistance to normal levels.
The evidence does NOT suggest that vitamin D “treats” or “cures” viral infections in people who don’t have a pre-existing deficiency. People who advertise vitamin “cures” are deceiving the public and committing fraud.
Don’t believe the hype– on either side of the argument.
Current evidence suggests that Tamiflu (which shouldn’t be used lightly) is being overused in the US (but not in Barbados), and that the H1N1 vaccine is probably a good idea for most people, especially the obese, or those with asthma or other chronic respiratory ailments.

H1N1 vaccine expected in Caribbean in Nov.

The first shipment of the H1N1 vaccine is expected to arrive in the Caribbean late next month, a press release from the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Secretariat revealed yesterday.
Those likely to have access to the vaccine are the most vulnerable groups, which include children, pregnant women, persons suffering from chronic, non-communicable diseases and young people, the release said.
The supply of the vaccine comes at a time when most countries have been bracing for the anticipated second wave in H1N1 cases, commonly referred to as swine flu.
"The bad news is this virus is expected to intensify its attack during the colder months of December to January. The good news is that the Caribbean is more prepared to deal with this virus the second time around, as most member states are seeking to acquire the vaccine," said Dr. Rudolph Cummings, the CARICOM Secretariat’s program manager for Health Sector Development.
The secretariat noted that The United States contributed significantly to a global fund, which was used to develop the vaccine that could be delivered at no cost to some CARICOM member states.
However, Cummings pointed out that this was not enough and some countries that did not benefit from the global fund would have to buy additional doses. The cost, he said, would be kept to approximately $7 per vaccine.
"We have passed the panic stage and for the majority who will be affected, the virus will just pass like the common flu," Cummings said.
He added that the approach to testing and treating the virus had changed since its appearance in late May.
Cummings noted that initially tests were done for all flu-like symptoms; now they will be done in the public sector for severe acute respiratory infections.
It is not known when the supply of vaccine will be delivered to The Bahamas.
On the issue of obtaining supplies of the vaccine from other agencies, Minister of Health Dr. Hubert Minnis told The Nassau Guardian recently that the government was in talks with the World Health Organization (WHO) on the matter and expected an answer before the end of the month. The WHO has placed an order of 400 million doses.
The WHO, as well as other agencies, has recommended that health workers should be given high priority for early vaccination.
Once the vaccine arrives in the country, Minnis said he will ensure there is even distribution.

Do Barbadians also have a right to hear debated the assertion that cancer should be treated with a vegetarian diet instead of surgery and/ or anticancer therapies? Or that infections should be treated with magnets? Or that diabetes should be treated with “noni juice” instead of a balanced diet, exercise, and medication?
I say NO. Barbadians have the right not to be confused with FALSE information.

Letting the discussion be set by points such as these is worse than taking a drug based on advertising copy. At least the drug companies can potentially be held responsible for their deceptions; the liars on these websites never are.

In respect of the last point, the risk of the neurological disorder Guillain-Barr is elevated to about 40 -70 per million people in those who have had the flu instead of the normal 10-20 per million in the general population.
In the 1976 flu debacle, the vaccine was thought to have increased the risk by 1 -2 per million.
This, as later studies showed, was not caused by the vaccine itself, but by contamination of the vaccine by the campylobacter bacterium.

Despite what the activists say, in reality, paediatric vaccines are NOT big business for the drug companies. Chronic illness makes MUCH more money. The drug companies have high hopes for vaccines making them money in the future– but not piddling little MMR and ‘flu vaccines at less than $10 a pop. Cancer vaccines will make billions if the drug companies have their way– and they won’t cost $10.
This entire discussion is too often dominated by wilful ignorance and fearmongering. Five minutes’ time with Google should reveal the emptiness of the anti-vaccine movement. Frankly, they deserve our pity.
What we should REALLY be concerned with:
– Holding the generic drug companies responsible for quality control
– Independent efficacy comparisons between branded and generic drugs
– Reform of the system of consultancy at our local hospital, where senior doctors are essentially given pocket-money salaries but are allowed to behave as badly as they like in lieu of monetary payment
– Incorporation of no-fault “clinical audit” as a basic aspect of public clinical service
– Incorporation of medical education as a basic aspect of public clinical care

David..all i can say is that in the 1918 Spanish flu it was estimated that 20 000 000 people died but if you research you would find that it was actually vaccines that doctors gave people worldwide that caused those deaths… and people that were not vaccinated survived….there is an old saying..those who do not now history are bound to repeat it.
That’s an interesting assertion; I’ve been unable to confirm it via my own research. Can you provide any authoritative historical sources that support this accusation? I can’t find anything (outside of forum or blog posts) that confirms that millions of vaccines were given in 1918.

If the swine flu is mild and only kills people with underlying medical conditions then surely those with no underlying medical conditions need the vaccine. The first thing that must be acknowledged is that vaccines are not risk-free.
The second thing that must be acknowledged is that your articles are correct: PEOPLE ARE AFRAID.
However, your implication is that people are afraid, therefore their worst fears must be correct.
That really isn’t the case.
Nor can we necessarily follow the actions of doctors and nurses. They are not always the best role models. Doctors smoke, drink excessively, eat fast food, and manage stress poorly, just like the rest of us. They cause excessive deaths in hospitals by failure to WASH THEIR HANDS!
So: (1) We can’t assume that our fears are accurate;
(2) we can’t assume that doctors are the best role models.
I’d add (3) We can’t *assume* that vaccine critics are more credible than the doctors are.
What can we actually do?
EXAMINE THE EVIDENCE.
When we do so, a few things become clear.
– Vaccines are far safer than the disease they protect against. This is true even given the risk of Guillain-Barré syndrome, which is a very rare complication.
– Vaccines aren’t worth the risk if there was no significant chance of anyone getting the disease anyway. I don’t get vaccinated against Asian diseases unless I’m visiting Asia.
I have never suggested that *everyone* should be vaccinated against the ‘flu. I agree with the last CDC recommendations I saw online, which said that the groups at greatest risk should be vaccinated:
– children
– young adults
– pregnant women
– immunosuppressed people (the elderly, AIDS, steroid users etc.)
– those with pertinent chronic illnesses, especially asthma and obesity
– caretakers & household members of the above groups. “Caretakers” includes medical and nursing staff, nursing-home workers, and so on.
I acknowledge that there’s dissent over the value of vaccinating the elderly; vaccines are less effective for that group.
But the most important thing is to fight fear and hysteria with ACCURATE information. Citizen, you’re repeating inaccurate information. I’ve had the ‘flu shot, and it didn’t give me the ‘flu. That’s a myth, you’re repeating, Citizen.

Freewilly, I have two main points to make in response to your post:
(1) I’m still not seeing any reference to authoritative historical sources confirming mass vaccination in 1918, on a scale that would allow vaccinations to be a primary cause of 20 million deaths.
(2) I’m not seeing any data that would suggest that 1918 vaccinations and 2009 vaccinations use similar technology and therefore pose similar risks.
So… I remain skeptical, of your vaccination claims as well as your Globalist claims.

Yea SQUALENE is a naturally occurring substance in the body, but to inject it into the body is a different animal. Is identical to the one found in the body? Hopi, I respect your concerns, but you’re asking some questions that have already been answered, some directly in posts above yours, some via posted links. Still, though, I do maintain that the best person for you to discuss these issues with is a doctor that you know and trust.
And no, there’s no reason to believe that the trace amounts of nonoxynol-9 found in vaccines have any effect whatsoever on fertility, either immediately or down the line. Nonoxynol-9 is basically soap. Trace amounts of soap in an injection aren’t going to kill anyone or affect their fertility.
I’ve seen some websites arguing a connection between vaccine squalene and disease, but I haven’t yet seen any evidence for those claims. Thus far, it seems to be conjecture fueled by hostility and fear, rather than evidence.
I do maintain that drug companies can potentially be held responsible for their misdeeds. It doesn’t happen as swiftly or thoroughly as it should, but it does happen. In contrast, posters on web forums don’t ever have to stand responsible for the irresponsible advice that they sometimes give– which is why I maintain that the best source of info is actual educated responsible trustworthy professionals, rather than unverified websites.
FreeWilly, I’m not sure what the implications of the declaration are, but I don’t have strong feelings one way or another. If it leads to further erosion of American liberties as the 9/11 declarations did under Bush, that would be unfortunate for Americans, I suppose; but my focus is on Barbados.

That’s a good and reasonable question. I’m not a virologist or an epidemiologist, but here are some numbers:
0.1% ‘flu mortality rate for low-risk people
Up to 20% ‘flu mortality rate for high-risk people
Well under 0.001% mortality rate for the vaccine.
Americans experience a 20% chance of getting ordinary seasonal flu each year, but risks for this year with H1N1 may or may not be greater.
The ‘flu vaccine, if taken, has a 60% chance of producing immunity to the ‘flu.
So, the direct/personal benefit for people who are low-risk for the ‘flu is small.
BUT it’s not only direct benefit we’re looking at; the community/ public health benefits are also important. By taking the vaccine they help to keep their community safer; if most people are vaccinated, the virus is much less able to spread, and high-risk people (who aren’t completely protected by the vaccine anyway) end up being much safer via “herd immunity”.
AND by taking the vaccine they help to keep high-risk people in their household or in their professional care MUCH safer. This is especially important for elderly at-risk people, since the direct immunity from vaccination that they receive may be smaller than for the general population.
I should note that the concept of high-risk persons for H1N1 ‘flu is very different from that of seasonal ‘flu. Obese people and people with even well-controlled asthma, for instance, are high-risk with H1N1.

No-one’s being shot. Dr. Weil is making fraudulent claims for commercial gain. He is breaking the law, however well-meaning he may be. He needs to modify his claims so they are in keeping with current evidence, or withdraw his products. The orders being given to him are reasonable ones.

There’s too much inaccurate material flying around. For instance, the link about Sweden, when followed and researched, seems to include a man who had a heart attack and an elderly woman who was already mortally ill in the count of people who died “from” the swine flu vaccine.
Sweden has millions of people. Two deaths from as-yet uncertain cause, one heart attack, and one elderly woman passing away isn’t “people dropping like flies”.
That’s not accurate or appropriate. Those kind of scare tactics don’t help– unless the aim is to scare people and not inform them.

I just want to say up front that if you have personal, religious or ethical reasons for not personally wanting to use vaccines, that’s your business and I’m not going to argue with it. There are legal and ethical implications with regard to the healthcare decisions you make on behalf of your children, but that also is beyond the scope of my posts here.
All I want to do is note that firm claims should be based on firm, accurate evidence, and to increase the accuracy of what evidence is presented here.
Nonoxynol-9 is used during the manufacturing process of some vaccines. Its purpose, if I recall correctly, is to induce changes in the membranes of the cells that the vaccine viruses are grown in before the virus is deactivated. It’s removed from the vaccine, but sometimes trace amounts remain. It’s not a concern, because it’s not a toxic substance at those amounts. Remember, you eat soap daily on your dishes, even though you rinse them. Toxicity depends on amount. Two Panadols are fine, twenty might permanently damage your liver.
Vaccines do not contain aborted foetal cells. However, the tissue that the viruses are grown in contains cells cloned from human tissue originally from foetuses aborted (for other reasons) in 1965.

Drug companies are protected from liability with regard to vaccines’ side effects. They are not protected (as far as I know) from criminal prosecution with regard to fraudulent, dishonest claims about their products.
I do care greatly about people’s health, which is why I’ve put time and energy into these posts, and why I’m still posting.
As suspicious as I am of the drug companies, I do feel that vaccines in general and the H1N1 vaccine in particular work to the general public benefit; further, I feel that the public is best served by accurate information instead of fearmongering.
The drug companies’ advertisements stand on one side; the anti-drug company activists stand on the other. Both bend the truth into pretzels to try to persuade you to support their pockets and their cause.
It’s important to have people who try to focus on the facts instead of taking a partisan position.
I support your statements in defense of natural immunity. I just remember, always, that we pay a price for natural immunity in the death and mutilation of people in our community. I have friends who were crippled by polio; I have older relatives who spoke of a past time when women bore ten children and five survived, the rest killed by childhood diseases.
Vaccines carry risks of complications and side effects, but natural immunity and vaccine-free communities come at a cost in human suffering. As far as I can tell, the risks and costs of vaccines are tiny compared to the risks and costs of not using them.
With respect to the race issue: I am glad that vaccine production is not the province of any one race, and that black people are scientists and healers too. I look forward to a time that our public policy in Barbados is formed not by the fawning imitation that so often seems to be the case, but by cool, level-headed assessment of the facts, untainted by fear or hostility.
That’s what I’m striving for here. No fear, no hostility, just the facts.

Does the same thing apply to him? What are his conflicts of interest, if any?

Care to give a ‘scientific’ reference for this piece? Where did you remember it from? Did you personally carry out trials? Remember you are dealing with facts!
