FIVE ERRORS IN KAIETEUR NEWS EDITORIAL ON GUYANESE AND BAJANS

To whom this may be presented editor@guyanatimesgy.com, news@guyanatimesgy.com, kevin@caribbeannetnews.com, ngmirror@guyana.net.gy – inserted by Barbados Underground

I refer to your recent editorial entitled Bajans distain for Guyanese (KN,30 July 2008) . The paper must be commended for expressing concern for Guyanese nationals abroad. The Editorial made some good points. But the sometimes confusing opinion piece had a number of errors which if gone unchecked could make things worse for the sensitive subject matter..

FIRST ERROR: Relatives of a dead Guyanese man and wounded Guyanese woman in recent robbery at a bar in Barbados claim it is hate crime against Guyanese. It must therefore be true and in fact can be generalised to the whole situation in the island.

REALITY: We sympathise with the relatives. We understand their anguish. We respect their feeling that Guyanese were specially targeted. Consul Faria’s description of the original report in Kaiteur News as ‘speculative nonsense’ was not directed at the grieving relatives but at the paper’s overall sensationalist and poorly researched thrust which tried to paint the horrific incident as a hate crime against Guyanese. Evidence and facts, including from Barbados police and other intelligence (information) sources reaching the Guyana Consulate, do not support a hate crime scenario. The entertainment establishment is in an area where several other businesses, the majority owned and operated by Bajans, have been hit over the years by armed robbers.

SECOND ERROR: “It is a fact that anti-Guyanese sentiments are on the rise in Barbados…They are rampant “ REALITY: There is an increase, relative to say the 1980s, of a general public discussion on Guyanese presence in Barbados. Among the reasons for this: One, there has been an increase of Guyanese in the island (to fill jobs mainly in construction and agricultural sectors). Two, the discussion reflects a concomitant rise of phone in radio programmes (“talk radio”) and the need for moderators, in competing among themselves, to search for sensationalist emotional topics such as the Guyanese presence. This media discussion also includes views on the Caribbean Single Market and Economy (CSME). Three, regrettably individual opportunist opinion makers including politicians have publicly pandered to anti-CSME
sentiment ( though we must stress that senior government spokesperons, including Prime Minister David Thompson and Foreign Affairs Minister Chris Sinckler from the two main political parties in Barbados have spoken favourably of the Guyanese presence). In all of this, one may perceive an “anti-foreigner” , including Guyanese, sentiment. The Consulate from day one has spoken out against hateful, inflammatory rhetoric on the airwaves and in the print media. Its intervention, including to the Barbadian police to uphold the laws of Barbados against racial and other forms of incitement , have borne fruit. One cannot equate, as the Kaiteur News’ sometimes confusing editorial does, this public discussion, albeit at times distasteful and repugnant, with a generalised rise in anti-Guyanese feelings against Guyanese by the Barbadian people. The Consulate’s view is that in the main the majority of Barbadians still welcome Guyanese and are embarrassed by the handful of xenophobes who used to (they are now mainly censored out after the Consulate’s intervention) phone in the talk radio and write to the hateful, racist and lawless internet blogs (BU Highlight) which need to be monitored and controlled..We must build on unity and friendship among peoples rather than generalising from particular incidents which neverthess needs monitoring.

THIRD ERORR: The film “On the Map”, made by Barbadian film maker Annalee Davis, is another proof that anti-Guyanese sentiments are rampant in Barbados.

REALITY: Dr.Randy Persaud correctly notes that many of the interviewees and references to migrant workers in the movie are Guyanese. The film did not however generally point to any anti-Guyanese bashing in Barbados. It rightfully addressed the socio-economic difficulties and challenges facing migrant labour in several CARICOM countries.

FOURTH ERROR: The most “glaring” backlash against increasing Guyanese presence in recent times in Barbados was reflected in the treatment meted out by Barbadian immigration officers to Guyanese.

REALITY: The Guyana government, including the Consulate, is deeply concerned at reports of Guyanese who experience difficulties, including being denied entry at Barbados’ airport after spending hard earned money on tickets . No one can justify insulting remarks against Guyanese as contained in the reports. To equate the actions of immigration officers against certain, (the majority are permitted into Barbados) unfortunate arrivals with a generalised anti-Guyanese sentiment nevertheless doesn’t make sense. In Trinidad, an equal number or even more, in relative terms, of Guyanese are being denied entry. But because of the routinist, sensationalist preoccupation of sections of the Guyana media on Barbados, the difficultes of Guyanese there and in other Caribbean countries (not to mention New York where there are periodic shooting deaths and robberies of Guyanese) appear not to be worthy of attention.

FIFTH ERROR: The Guyana government, through its Consulate in Barbados, is not representing the interests of Guyanese there.

REALITY:
While the Guyana government and myself as Honorary Consul are deeply grieved at reports about discrimatory and other offences against Guyanese, there are proper ways to do things including being guided by protocol considerations. The overall aim is to maintain and build up the otherwise good and friendly relations between the government and people of Guyana and those in Barbados. The interests of people everywhere, especially working people, are the same. People are not inherently hateful to those from other lands. Guyanese and Barbadians have traditional family and friendship ties. The Consulate has worked over the years to build on this friendship and love, through for example the sponsoring of a Guyanese delegation of workers in the BWU May Day parade and the donations of Guyana hardwood benches to Barbadian senior citizen homes and district hospitals. Protocol dictates the Consulate cannot publicly criticise Barbadian authorities such as the Police and Immigration. It, like the Guyana government, works assiduously in the background when necessary with letters and meetings in the interests of Guyanese. We work closeley with and recognise the commendable contributions of Barbadian institutions such as the trade unions, NGOs, community groups and churches in building unity and friendship. I earnestly do believe this is the way to go. We nevertheless must act when there are real or perceived injustices against our people, especially when anti-foreigner pandering becomes an intrinsic plank of mainstream politics, as has happened with right wing parties in Europe.
And the media, both in Guyana and Barbados, has a role to play. Rather than the routinist, poorly researched and sensationalist “us against them” approach, there must be a sober, well thought out outreach which can overcome any tensions and difficulties. Only then, can Guyanese, Barbadians and all of us continue to move ahead in friendship and love and make the societies an even better place for all of us.
Respectfully Yours,

NORMAN R. FARIA
Guyana’s Honorary Consul in Barbados

  1. At a townhall meeting at St Patricks school some time ago when this problem was then surfacing, I told David Ellis, Peter Wickham and Norman Faria that this would happen. I was called all kinds of names negative. I’ve seen this problem escallate , now beyond repair and I’ve accepted it and am gearing myself for the inevitable. I will not be violent unless needed.

  2. Out of Curiosity I am extremely proud of you. This is what we need.People who are prepare to act not only talk.I hope the authorities really investigate Josef Restaurant and the hiring practises there. In the meantime I am asking black barbadians who frequent that restaurant to boycott it.How the hell can he lay off black barbadian workers and keep on Indo-guyanese workers. That should never happened in Barbados.I hope we bloggers are kept up to date on the developments at that retaurant and also at the Great Escape hotel.
After what I witness on Spring Garden Highway yesterday I am very disturbed to say the least.Even today I am still in shock.Speaking to workmates and friends on the issue today everyone agreed that it appears more guyanese indo & black were at Spring garden than barbadians. It was something else. I hope the authorities are taking notes .This problem MUST be address with a very deep sense of urgency. It cannot continue.
Scout I understand your position.I have my alternative plans but I will continue to make view be known on the blogs.Believe me the message is getting through to Barbadians.
I make sure when I go to meetings I speak aboutthe issue,at work,on the block,in the bars and whereever I go I discussed this issue. It of fundamental importance to us and the future of a black Barbados is at stake.I will not rest until the authorities act and bring some level of commonsene into this immigration matter.I believe it is outof hand.
Anonymous I know Thomas Harris is Peter Hariss brother.I am concerned that Peter Harris is the chairman of the Combermere School Board and he is very clever and very manipulative that he can weave his way around PM Thompson.I hope PM Thompson wise up to the tricks of these Indians.Do not be hand to mouth and accept gifts from these Indians.
Prime Minister David Thompson do not sell out the birthrights of black Barbadians for mutton, pork, and free dinners at Josef restaurant. The future sufferation of blacks at the hands of Indians will be lay squarely at your feets because you have the power to address the injustices that were meted out to black people during slavery.Do not allow us to be enslaved again by indo-guyanese & chinese..
PM Thompson the wrongs of our open door immigration policy carried out by the last administration must be corrected and you will be damned if you fail to address the wrongs in that policy
ACT OR WE THE PEOPLE OF BARBADOS WILL GET RID OF YOU & YOUR GOVERNMENT IN THE NEXT ELECTIONS.

  3. To answer questions: she could have held a Barbados passport, but after all the hassle she got travelling to and from Guyana on multiple occasions, she refused to get one. And as she passed away some few years back, there is now no need for her to get one.

And lets be honest, if it was a matter of not holding a Barbados passport, why not give me hassle too: I have never held a Barbadian passport, as I felt my UK (now EU) one was much more practical. I do hold dual citizenship.

  4. “after all the hassle she got travelling to and from Guyana on multiple occasions, she refused to get one.”

    Then why complain?

  5. Scout look and see who are the persons who are still chiming the goodness of Guyanese the same ones whom you have mentioned!.

Lets be honest, REAL GUYANESE IN BARBADOS!

I hate to admit but at one point in time I was one who never saw the hurt in these people but the stories, the boldness and audacity of these people makes me so mad!

someone told me that I need to go to Bay Gardens in Oistins that the Guyanese have taken over the facilities as well! How do these people get these businesses dont they have to go through certain procedures first before they can open any establishemt in BARBADOS! Is this a free for all excepting to bajans! Has Barbados gone MAD!

I remember the illegal Guyanese who had a store in one of the malls and was deported because he went to beat bajan school girls!

I have some questions for fairminded guyanese:

How can we believe that you will come and try to live with black bajans when we know you blatantly refuse to even think that we are human beings.

If the shoes were on the other feet wont you try to protect your children’s future at all cost and quarrel for proper immigration policies?

I AM FLABBERGHASTED AT THESE DEVELOPMENTS WHICH I AM WITNESSING in my sweet Barbados!

  6. **** ALERT***

    BU Readers & David

Kaeiteur newspaper has an article today which states that the shooting of the 2 guyanese at Bay street may have actually been done by a guyanese.

Yes folks, you are reading right – the Kaeiteur news is now saying what a few bloggers on this site had been saying all along – that it may be a guyanese who shot these 2 other guyaneseresiding in barbados.

Now they are retracting after weeks of articles,an editorial and a letter by the dishonest so – called doctor – randy persaud – insisting and blatantly lying by suggesting that it was a hate crime against guyanese, and it was as a result of anti-guyanese hatred and not a robbery etc.

Now this small article – after the damage has been done.

Note, they have not apologised – just an article saying information coming to them suggest guyanese on guyanese crime.

You think I am pleased by this?

Absolutely not, because I believe if it were not for the pressure by BU and the bloggers which put pressure on norman faria here in barbados and Adrian Hinds and Tony Hall in the USA putting pressure on randy persaud in the U.S. who probably put pressure on kaeiteur news to do that article – that kind of lie would still be floating around out there.

Annalee Davis – you are next – you better do a more balanced film at what is happening to our society by this influx of guyanese undesirables.

You are taking your lie and distortion which you call a film and are pushing this rubbish all over the world giving barbados a bad name.

Annalee Davis ( as plastic bag sings) – ‘all eyes are on you’.

  7. Here is the little note which is sequestered in the Kaieteur Newspaper today:

    August 6, 2008 | News
Shooting death in B’dos may be work of Guyanese

Reports coming out of Barbados have suggested that a Guyanese was involved in the fatal shooting of his countryman, Christopher Griffith, and the wounding of bar owner Seelochanie Samuels, a little over two weeks ago.

Sources in Barbados have indicated to this newspaper that Griffith may have been the main target of the attack which occurred at a popular Guyanese bar on Bay Street, St. Michael, which is frequented by Guyanese living and working on the island.

According to a source, there are reports that Griffith, who hailed from the Essequibo Coast, may have developed problems with one of his countrymen.

Police on the island have so far not arrested anyone in connection with the shooting and the Barbadian media has been adopting a low key approach to the incident.

Griffith’s body was returned to Guyana last week and he was buried on Thursday. Samuels is reportedly recovering and has since been discharged from hospital.

She reportedly underwent successful surgery to remove the bullets that were lodged in her body.

Relatives of the two Guyanese had initially believed that the incident was a direct attack on the Guyanese community on the island. They have almost ruled out robbery as a motive for the attack.

Two Saturdays ago, two gunmen walked into a bar operated by Samuels and shot dead Christopher Griffith and also wounded Samuels when she tried to intervene.

Samuels’s relatives are angry that with the way the matter is being treated by the Barbadian authorities.

  8. Out of curiosity……No way, by any stretch of the imagination am I ‘running scared’….of what, who?

Just busy with some new projects and some deadlines. Sometimes I am ready to post but then I see that JC, Scout, Negroman etc all share my views. So instead of duplicating comments, I just read and nod in agreement.Maybe I should post my nods.
Have no fear though, as soon as I have more time, you will hear from me.

  9. @ David…

Can you give me your definition of a racist…..and not a Wikipedia explanation plz….just your own perception of one…thanks.

  10. @Technician

We know that you are going somewhere with your line of questioning? A racist in simple terms is an individual from one race who by socialization believes in every fiber of their body that they are superior to an individual from ANOTHER race.

    @ all

We continue to be amazed that the mainstream media have sat passively on the fence while the Guyana media and its acolytes took pot shots at Barbados i.e. Barbadians, our police force and other entities.

Barbados has build a brand or identity which is respected all over the world. The evidence is there that the Guyanese media and others would without hesitation attempt to strip it all away without credible rhyme or reason.

The social scientists like Peter Wickham and others of his ilk would want to experiment to such an extent that they are willing to through years of sweat and toil through the window caused by our fore-fathers.

It will be a hard struggle but we should not be disheartened. The story of David and Goliath is very instructive. We keep pecking away at the heel and eventually the beast may drop.

  11. Negroman
I have great restect for you. If seems just the two of us know the true guyana culture with indians and blacks. Therefore it boggles the mind how we, as bajans, can just TALK and TALK and TALK and everyday I see unfold right before my eyes and all we’re doing is TALKING. Haven’t you realise that we have lost the fight in a peaceful coup. BARBADOS WOULD NEVER BE THE SAME. You know what I mean, check who runs a lot of stalls in Fairchild Strret, check the Faiechild street restuarant.Yes, check the Oistins Bay Garden, I was there for the first time for a long time but for a short time because except for the clean surroundings, I though I was in Big Market. 75% guyanese (mainly indians) 20% bajans, 5% tourist. Guyanese even got the handicraft stalls. WE HAVE LOST THE BATTLE; ARE WE GOING TO FORFEIT THE WAR TOO?

  12. To all concerned bloggers
Question: What percentage of guyanese coming
    here for cropover will return?
    Answer: Between 5-10%
    Question: Does this happen annually?
    Answer: Yes.
Question: Is immigration and authorities aware
    of this?
    Answer: Yes.
Question: Numerically, how many will remain
    this year?
    Answer: About 1500-2000.
Question: What is the estimated volumn of
    Guyanese in Barbados?
    Answer: Between 40,000- 45,000.
Question: Numerically, how many other illegal
    immigratants are they in Barbados?
    Answer: Between 6000- 10,000.
    Question: Nationalities?
Answer: Chinese, T&T’ians , St Lucians,
    Vincies, Jamaicans, Africans ( from
the mainlands ) and a few others from
    various nations.
Question: In case of a natural disaster, are we
prepared to handle this influx of
    illegal migrates ?
    Answer: No way
Question: When bajans come to a shelter and
find that it is full with a large % of
    illegals, what can they do?
Answer: Good question. The folks at the D.E.M
never thought of that, nor factored it
    into their plan.
Results: Panic for some; anger by others.
Warning: Barbadians take stock. While we don’t
want anything to occur, all things are
    possible. PREPARE YOURSELF AND
    FAMILY for this possibility.

  13. The Scout I have great respect for you too.Although the battle has been lost we can still be victorious in the war.It needs every right thinking black Barbadians to do the right thing.Boycott,Boycott ,Boycott these scoundrels businesses. We are the majority in Barbados and all businesses need our support to survive. We must continue our unrelenting assault of this matter on the blogs.Talk to our workmates, friends, associates, strangers and everyone willing to listen on this matter. We must talk especially with our women folks, stop patronising these people.Do not buy the foolish and unnecessarily cosmetics, hair extensions, clothing and the likes from these people. Our young ladies have a penchant for buying a lot of stupid cosmetics, clothing and the like.Encourage them to save their money, seek investment oppurtunities, understand the importance of savings and develop entrpreneurship skills. We as a people must stop being mere consumers and develop business acumens.
We must consistently put pressure on our leaders to address this immigration problem. We can force governemnt hands on this issue.Observe what recently happened in South Africa we can do likewise.
It is up to the black Barbadians to wake up and take action.Time has ran out.

  14. I have some questions for my ministers and thier leader Mr. Thompson.

    Mr. Boyce I saw you with an Indian looking person on Kadooment day? I hope he was not begging for status;

Mr. Estwick are you going to rat us for a couple of benches?

Mr. Thompson you jumped in my band were you as surprise as I was when you saw the amount of Guyanese who were on the way to Spring Garden and dont let us talk about when we GOT TO SPRING GARDEN!~

You yourselve readily admit to this serious problem yet, we are not seeing any kind of relief or release from these people!

Is noone going to respond to the nasty sinister allegations from Persaud and crew; dont bajans have a leader who is willing to TELL OFF that fraud Jagdeo who has all of his people suffering in and out of their country!

I am awaiting some form of response!

    S O S!

  15. To follow up on JC’s comments
Minister Boyce how come many Guyanese have stalls in the Fairchild Street Bus Stand & Restaurant.

Minister Benn how come so many fish vendors in Oistins are Guyanese nationals

Minister Blackeett how come so many vendors on Spring Garden for Bridgetown Market & kadooment were Guyanese

Prime Minister David Thompson thanks for the change we voted for in January 2008.The change in the demographics of Barbados.
Again I say thank you very much.
I am eagerly looking forward to 2013 when I will be able to vote for change.

  16. Who’s complaining? The passport issue is now irrelevant. I am responding to a post which queried as to whether dislike towards Guyanese was present in Barbados. I gave examples of it.

    Not my problem any more.

But I always find it refreshing to be reassured that xenophobia is a mankind thing, rather than particularly a white person’s thing: there is much fuss here about the influx of Eastern Europeans to our little island here in the UK, and asylum seekers, and muslims etc, so much so they seem to have forgotten they were like this to the first waves of blacks, who included my dad.

  17. Our last Prime Minister Owen Arthur had the belief that he was elected Prime Minister of the Caribbean. He refused to listen to concerns of Barbadians and we know the end result.
Prime Minister David Thompson please listen to the concerns of Barbadians and respond with appropriate policies to address those concerns.
This immigration issue with respect to Guyanese must be address as a matter of urgency. Please act to protect the interest of Barbadians especially the black Barbadian majority.

  18. Would you like to defend this Faria? 99.9% OF THESE DEAD PEOPLE WERE BLACK.

A lot of you people who are not Guyanese are reading about Roger Khan and feeling sorry for him; don’t feel sorry for him this man is a bloody killer– you hear me–killer, and I am not talking about with his drugs, I am talking about murder for hire. This man had a killer team that he paid to kill small time drug dealers who sold drugs cheaper than him, and anybody who gets in his way. During that period, Roger Khan paid to kill more young men than anyone can imagime, “with the blessings of the PPP government”. In fact, if you don’t believe me ask anybody who came from Guyana with in the last 3 years.
    By Clay @ USA NY

  19. Corrupt immigration officials, corrupt custom officers, other corrupt governemt officers you all are damned for the future sufferation of black Barbadians at the hand of the large indian & chine populations in Barbados in the not to distant future.
The meagre sums of $1500 & $2000 you all are receiving from these people I hope that money will be of help to your children & grand children when the oppression from those groups take full effect in the new Barbados.

  20. Negroman I feel your pain but that’s the way the cookie crumbles when high officials allow themselves to be bought with “ROTI”.

    **** ALERT***

    BU Readers & David

Kaeiteur newspaper has an article today which states that the shooting of the 2 guyanese at Bay street may have actually been done by a guyanese.

    ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

EXACLY! – not long ago, I’ve linked an article
about guyanese immigrants in New being chucked off by
    other fellow guyanese!

Some readily prey on each other
& there is infighting guyanese robbing other
guyanese in Guyana – look at their native crime rate!
    Guanese on Guyanese crime.

    – This is why thorough
    investigations are needed before people
jump to conclusions, that’s also why it’s
irresponsible to put unfounded rumors out there,
    – Until a case is proven.

I still say- those legally here & those with
criminal pasts – need to go back home!

    Repatriate them!

Those businesses hiring them need to be penalized for obstructing justice.

  22. @ Chet 18 We know about every thing you are talking about and we not FEELING FOR A BOY!

  23. Barbados is heading down the dangerous road of ‘the Barbadian genocide’ with the advent of ‘welcome all’ to our shores, especially with the 20000 odd indo guyanese there – the migrant workers they are called (now we are seeing lots of chinese as well) – these migrant workers never leave

There is strong racist attitude in indo guyanese check guyana now, check a few of the Caribbean website forums and see the views of the indo guyanese far removed from guyana but still spouting the hatred.

Thankfully (and I say this sparingly) this racism and hatred is currently somewhat dormant, however with daily issues and conflicts it is like a volcano waiting to erupt.

  24. I hope the BU family note the article in today’s Nation where the P.M. is talking about making Barbados a place ‘commensurate with the dreams ‘ of the returning Nationals.

I wonder if Mr Thompsonn ask himself where are we going to put these returning nationals and their offspring if we don’t get rid of the over 50,000 or more guyanese illegals and others who are clogging up our health facilities, roads, schools, garbage system.

DAVID THOMPSON WHEN ARE YOU GOING TO START THE MASSIVE DEPORTATIONS?

WHEN ARE YOU GOING TO START REVIEWING THE CITIZENSHIP,THE PERMANENT RESIDENCES AND THE WORK PERMITS ISSUED UNDER THE IMMIGRATION CHIEF GREAVES AND HIS CORRUPT LIEUTENANTS AND REVOKE THOSE THAT ARE SUSPECT?

We Need Action Now Mr Thompson,We have Waited Too Long.

  25. Reading Today’s Nation newspaper I noticed an article on the Malls in Bridgetown being emptied because of high rents.

I wonder if bajans know that most of these malls in bridgetown are owned by indians.

The bajan boutique and store owners are now complaining that these mall spaces are too expensive for a tiny rental spot.

Black bajans can’t seem to get it that they are the cash cows for these impoverished indians who come to our shores.

  26. Depression in rents is an overall market behaviour at the moment anon. People are having problems getting mid-highend houses, apartments rented. We believe some kind of correction will have to take place in the market but at what price? Many of these properties are mortgaged!

  27. Agree with you totally David, that the fall off in mall rentals has a lot to do with the tightening in the economy.

However what these store owners complained about was the arbitrary raising of rents by these indian mall owners and the small space that was being offered.

More importantly the store owners argued that for the high rent they were being charged, the mall owners (as is the practice of that ethnic group) were pocketing the money and refused to honour their side of the bargain by advertising the mall or keeping proper maintenance on the buildings.

Consider how they behave in the houses that they are renting room by room in the City and other areas.

They pack dozens of people in a house which has been haphazrdly added on to and then don’t provide any fire escapes,no adequate bathroom facilities,no rodent or pest control, one kitchen etc.

These people with this sort of behaviour are a blight on our landscape.

My argument is that if black bajans don’t realise by now that these indian business people are not seeing this as a situation where they spend money to advertise the mall and attract business to you – while you bring income to them through rentals.

They are takers only, and blacks need to avoid getting into business arrangements with them as far as is possible.

They are vultures pure and simple, feeding off the less fortunate or those who have few options.

  28. The wickedness and corruption of these indians are being manifested daily. As Anonymous said those scoundrels are a blight to our society.I mentioned on many occassions indians destroy societies because of their selfish nature.Every single indian business is always in a state of desrepair or is rundown. Those bastards do not spend money whatsoever.I will say those scums horde money and will alway put pressure on any government’s finances. No government can adequately budget on revenue from indirect taxation based on the spending pattern of indians.Indians are a disruption in any society.

On the immigration issue,I must report action is being taken to seriously address the immigration problem with the high influx of illegal immigrants especially the scums indo-guyanese.In recent times quite a few have been deported. Many are being refuse entry at the airport and some who are here even as long as 15 or 20 years are being deported.I know of a case where an indo-guyanese was in Barbados for nearly 20 years was recently deported because he got caught with stolen construction equipment.Daily raids are taking place in Barbados .I believe the authorities are taking decisive action on this immigration matter. However, more needs to be done.I do not know if it is a deliberate act by the media of Barbados but the deportation of illegals in Barbados are happenning on a daily basis and is not being highlighted by the press.I do not know if the government asked for a news black out on this matter.I have my suspicions.

Recently a black guyanese friend of mine who was employed at the Four Season Resort at Paradise Black Rock indicated to me he and many other black workers both local & foreign were laid off and replaced by a lot of indo-guyanese and chinese workers. He said an indian sub contractor is hiring indo-guyanese and laying off black workers.I cannot believe those things are happenning in Barbados.I am in the process of writing a letter to the Prime Minister, and copying it to the Minister of Immigration & Minister of Labour. In the meantime I am calling on the authorities to investigate Four Seasons Resort hiring practises and the blatant discrimintion that is being carry out against the black majority in Barbados.

  29. What nonsense is this? It’s a free market, no one is putting a gun to anyone’s head and forcing them to rent. The market will decide this as it is now. It’s obvious that the economy is stagnating. If you cant afford the rent get to hell out. SIMPLE.
How is it you are cussing the Indian businessmen now? Arent these the same families that afforded Bajans credits over the years when banks wouldnt lend poor people money? Why not learn from them and play their game and stop being the victim with stupid complaints. If you are the consumer or the renter, then you have the power. Leff de people dem tings and buy from wunna own. Nobody forcing wunna to do business wid de coolie man. If de prices high, leff de tings pon de shelves.

  30. […] Faria & the criminal Guyana govt ‘lecturing’ Barbados – yuh lie!! Bush Tea: Surely, it must be the ultimate shame for the government of any country when its people are forced […]

  32. y’all run a story on this one please
    http://propagandapress.org/2008/08/14/guyana-forced-to-borrow-runway-lights-from-barbados-night-flights-still-cancelled/
the govt of Guyana can’t even keep the lights on at the airport and this is not the first time…but they are borrowing lights from Barbados so flights can land at night!
sometimes you guys meaning to do good help these clowns keep us in the misery we’re in…someone should’ve said hell no! or charged them for it. all they are paying is the air freight
couple years ago they had mini buses on the runways so planes can land…these are the people running Guyana!!

  33. Negroman that news about the deportation of the illegals is the best news I have heard for a while.

I too had been getting information that these deportations are taking place and if the government has to do it quietly for the start, then I don’t mind because I believe in time they will let us know what is going on.

  34. Well if the government wanted to do it quietly, you all have opened your big mouths and let the cat out the bag.

  35. Then maybe the message would also get out to all illegal immigrants in Barbados,GET OUT!!

How many times do the regular commenters on BU have to say it ?

Logically speaking,I believe that Government might have finished their statistics on how many have overstayed & realize that they have to start doing something before the problem gets out of hand any more than it already is,or the Antigua incident might have cemented the resolve.Whatever the reason,I salute Government for taking a stand on this issue.

  36. “she could have held a Barbados passport, but after all the hassle she got travelling to and from Guyana on multiple occasions, she refused to get one”

Dear Vetlet: I think that this is what is called shooting yourself in the foot. Your late mother was entitled to a Barbados passport and refused to get one and now you are here complaining on her behalf? I am sorry Vetlet but your late mother was not very wise.

  37. Dear Anonymous:

On Agust 5th at 3:48 p.m. you wrote:

“Out of Curiousity – what about the union and this white lady at Great Escape Hotel?”

How do you know that the white female at the Great Escape is a lady and not just a woman?

Or are you one of those people who believe that white females are ladies and black females are what? just women maybe?

  38. Dear Vetlet:

You wrote” she used a Guyanese passport, but had proof of Barbados citizenship. My memory of these return trips, was sitting in immigration control with my mum for hours”

Now that you ae all grown up you should ask yourself why did your mother do that to you? Made you sit and suffer unnessarily. Why, why, why?

Anybody who had proof of Barbados citizenship and yet chose to be detained on each trip into Barbados had to be mad, and unmindfull of their own poor tired child. Did your mother do this so that she could be “rescued” by her Bajan husband each time? Did that “rescuing” make dad feel like a real man? Some people like your lae mother just seem to enjoy feeling that they are being victimized. Was your late your mother related to Reudon Eversley by any chance?

They are people in this world who shoot themselves in the foot and then cry victim. Such people are attention seekers, and enjoy any attention even negative attention. No wonder people asked why your father married a Guyanese woman. Your mother was clearly mad or foolish. Inded your father should have married a sensible, practical down to earth Bajan woman.

  39. In today’s edition of Heat magazine on page 3 a guyanese lady is crying out about the illtreatment she is receiving from her bajan boyfriend.I read that story and the conclusion is the pressure is beginning to bear on the illgegal Guyanese and all type of trickery and scams are going to be use to play on the emotions of Barbadians to be symphatetic towards guyanese.I believe that article is the beginning of a serious of articles and ploys to offset this government committment to address this immigration problem in a practical way.Barbadians please do not be gullible. That story is hollow and not complete
Bloggers please read the story and analyse it for yourselves.
Another black community in Crane West Coast Guyana was raided by Guyana police. It is in Kaieteur Newspaper today edition.People doors were kicked down and young women some as young 13 were arrested and charged.Police invaded the people’s bedrooms with these young females clad only in the night wear.It is horrendous the treatment blacks are receiving in their communities at the hands of racist PPP government and its institutions especially the police.
That is the scene that will be visited on the new Barbados when the racist wicked indo-guyanese take take over. That is the fate of our children & grand children.Mark Negroman’s words.Corrupt immigration,Custom & other Government officials that is the fate of your children & grand children because of the selling out of our birthrights by you all for meagre sums of $1500 & $2000.
I want to know when will black governemnts in the Caribbean get up and speak out against the abuse of the fundamental human rights of black guyanese in Guyana by the racist Bharat Jagdeo administration.America & Europe just condemn Russia for the abuse of power in the conflict with Georgia.Punitive action is being discuss on that matter. We have black leaders in the Caribbean who instead of condemniing and criticising the racist, wicked Bharat Jagdeo administration are instead having meetings with him, smiling and even lending him light bulbs for his airport.I believe a strong position must be taken by CARICOM about the situation in Guyana today.
My heart goes out to my unfortunate black brothers & sisters in Guyana who have to endure the treatment meted out to them on a daily basis and not one black Carbbean country is prepare to listen to the plight of those people and react in a manner that will benefit them.No wonder Guyana has “FineMan’Rawlins and 15 year old boys being prepare to die .The situation in Guyana is breeding many black freedom fighters and not criminals.
Blacks in Guyana continue to fight for your freedom.
    VICTORY WILL BE ASSURE.

  40. JAY you is somethign else ha ha ha ha ha ha! Although we dont agree at times I respect you, you are REAL! HAHA HA

  41. Negro man for a very long time I have been asking persons to ask Jagdeo why would he allow all of these horrific attrocities to happen in his beloved country; this is total crap! He needs to be held accountable for causing his people to be treated like shi”” in other people’s countries! I will never want to be a leader of any country but I will tell you this I am the leader of my household and if their is one thing I teach my children is for them to have principles Jagdeo fails miserably in this most important area!

therefore, JAGEDEO needs to be CHARGED! That is the bottom line na lotta long talk!

    First charge should be IGNORANCE!
anyone else can list some more charges! Couldn’t care less! Useless man! how could he love his country and allow persons to feel less than human in their country?

Does he expect the Caribbean to carry his people on their back! I think the guyanese people (all races) should cut his ass and put him out of town bottom line BLASTED NUISANCE!

  43. After the olympics the region attention will be focus on CARIFESTA that is going on Guyana.I hope the region wiil also focus on human rights violations taking place in that country against the black population in that trouble state.
There is sytematic targeting of black communities in Guyana by thejoint Police & Defence Forces of Guyana.this time the oppressive government has its police & defence Forces to target the black communities of Buxton,Friendship & surrounding black communities.
When will the deliberate targettuing of black communities in Guyana stop?
I hope the international human rights bodies are observing the human rights abuses occurring in Guyana against blacks .I believe Bharat Jagdeo & Clement Rohee should be charge for genocide.Charges should also be laid against them for crime against humanity. The racist PPP government has allowed hundred of black boys & men to be murdered by Roger Khan phantom gang and the extra judicial killings carried out by the Police.
Justice must be done for the innocent blacks lives that are lost in Guyana daily.

  44. Who you think was at the forefront of CARICOM? Who is in the Guiness Book of World Records for being the most successful attorney? Who started Carifesta? In fact, whose rum won competitions as the best rum in the world, let alone the Caribbean?

Guyanese immigrants, like all immigrants, are doing jobs that Bajan workers either don’t want, or won’t do for the pay that is being given. Guyanese immigrants in Barbados are of Indian and African descent.

  45. Negroman, what do you have to say about the bandits who escaped prison in 2003? About the Lusignan Massacre?

Criminals come from all sides in Guyana. And it’s not always a matter of hate/racism, sometimes it is just poverty, miseducation, or delinquency and it doesn’t matter who the victim is.

  46. WAT I HAV TO SAY ABOUT THIS BLOG THEIR IS LOT OF HATE TOWARDS GUYANESE THEIR IS ONLY ONE RACE IN GUYANA AND THAT THE HUMAN RACE.IMMIGRANTS GOES TO OTHER COUNTRIES BECAUSE THEIR IS JOBS , OPPORTUNITY ETC.THEY GO TO OTHER COUNTRIES TO DO THE SAME JOBS THAT THE PEOPLE DO’NT WANT TO DO IN THEIR COUNTRIES .BECAUSE THE SAME ONE WHO DO’NT WANT TO WORK TURN INTERNET RACIST.WHEN THE SAME IMMIGRANTS WERE POOR WAS OK NOW THEIR WORK THEIR ASS OFF AND OWN STALLS AND ALL THE OTHER STUFF THAT MAKE U JEALOUS AND TURN RACIST.PEACE OUT
