Plan To Live Forever But Live Like You will Die Tomorrow. Love Is When Your Companion Possesses The Qualities Which You Admire The Most And The Faults You Can Tolerate – unknown

I’Akobi Tacuma Maloney

Submitted by BU Family member

On exiting the Secondary institution I attended, one of my favourite teachers told me something that has proven to be true and remains with me until present. In his subject area, which I passed at CXC General with the BEST grade in my year group, at the Prize Giving Ceremony I was passed over for another teacher’s offspring. He said, “In Barbados it is WHO you know, not always WHAT you know”.

It is with this in mind that I can come to the conclusion that almost any cover up is possible with the right connections. Prior to these thoughts I was scanning the paper and saw the death announcement of a young man who looked so familiar to me. I therefore assumed we meet in some forum, possibly at the University. Whilst reading the Nation online today (4th July 2008) I realized that this young man was the person who allegedly jumped to his death in St. Lucy.

His mother, relatives, friends and Parliamentary Representative are calling for an investigation into this young mans death. My immediate thought was we are the number 1 developing country in the Caribbean what about an independent autopsy. I was surprisingly unsurprised to read further into the article that this request by the mother was denied. Immediately, I was infuriated DENIED. If the next of kin is financing the procedure and storage of the body, what is the problem?

I regard this denial in the same light as the sacking of Stanton Alleyne at the Sanitation Service Authority, a travesty of Justice. But if the Board who is assigned by the same government, who called for integrity legislation as a matter of urgency and once elected stated that investigation of the legislation would first have to be carried out can attempt to cripple Justice, then way shouldn’t anyone else.

As I would have encouraged every single SSA worker to join the Strike I implore the same to everyone in Barbados who believes in Justice to do the same. Join the Strike for this young man because at anytime it could be your sister or your brother or your son or your daughter. And certainly, if there is anyone who can logically state the barriers, which might plague the allowance of an independent autopsy speak loudly I have no problem with rationality.

  1. we have received so many emails on this incident. Whatever happened the late Tacuma touched many people in a positive way. While interested parties lobby for justice we wish to say to those affected by Tacuma’s loss that his legacy appears to be intake. When any human being departs this earth we all yearn for those left behind us to harbour positive memories of our life when amongst the living.

    May justice be served.
    May He Rest In Peace

  2. No disrespect to I’Akobi’s memory, but where was the travesty of justice in Alleyne’s sacking?

  3. Geez Justice….isn’t there a forum for that. The fact that you said no disrespect , then went on to do it, shows you just don’t care.
I am sure you could have put that comment in the right forum.

How many people who wear locks are “rasta?”
    Do all Rastafari smoke weed?
Do all Rastafari seek to import and supply marijuana?
Is ‘drug dealer’ the only occupation for ‘rastas’.
We are a small society where small mindedness is the norm. It is interesting the kind of comments that I heard about this young man simply because he had locks and was at Consett Bay. Most people did not care who he was until they found out that he was a university graduate……… but his proximity to Consett Bay needed explanation in their eyes ( he is a rasta so he had to be ‘landing’ weed)……. so he was guilty by association. I do not vilify the police but I do not support them blindly either. Considering the comments that were made when the police ‘locked down’ the Pine, our society associates crime with Pine, Chapman Lane, Orleans etc. I used to live near a ‘block’ and you would be surprised how many ‘well to do’ middle class people find their way down to buy and none of these people have a lock on their whole head. Marijuana is the drug of choice of many graduates of older secondary schools, University graduates, Doctors , Lawyers and Politicians. The Police do not usually harrass these people because the middle class smokers generally smoke in their own homes and not on a ‘block’. If the police go to a middleclass home they observe all the rules. I have heard of cases in Ivy, Pine and other city areas where police kick down doors without producing warrants. Sometimes the warrant is read with the wrong name and address but the officers still search. If you are a middleclass person the police will show you respect because you are more likely to know your rights or have an uncle in the force etc. Police are human first with the same weaknesses and presumptions as the rest of us so expecting them to be saints (not even the pastor is) and to always follow the law is a bit utopic……this is the reason for “Internal Affairs” or IA the ‘Police’ for the Police. Abuse of power is a very real problem, especially in small societies like ours. I pray that most of you remain safe in your middleclass situations and do not get a taste of the ‘other side’ of the Barbados Police Force. Yes, they are to protect and serve but who do they protect? and who do they serve? I have read in the Daily Mail of England that a “millionaire person” who sometimes spends time in our country took it upon themselves to plant marijuana on the grounds of the estate the police simply took the plants, destroyed them and ASKED her kindly not to plant them again. Strange that this never made our newspapers. Do you think this person would be treated with kid gloves if they were local and(dread) locked?

Come on Tech, mate. Whoever’s upset u, just tell your Bimbro, ok?!!!!

    I’m a good listener!!!! 🙂

  22. Hey —”” Advocate””

Without rechecking the information I believe it was COVE BAY not CONSETT BAY
    this is very significant

  23. Who will investigate the Police.
    let us wait and see.
lots of wearing locks Do not even go near smoke far less smoke.

    God is watching us

  24. We need to grow up and realise being our brother’s keeper is the safest way of living.

This is one more unnatural death which if history repeats itself will remain unaddressed for a long period like all the other ones.

Remember what happened when Bob Woolmer died unnaturally in his hotel room in Jamaica?

Never seen officials act with such speed. It shows what is possible.

We want that reaction for everyone of us who dies unnaturally in this country, irrespective of who he or she is or what he or she does.

Life is precious and any unnatural loss should get an immediate response.

One or more of us will find it is our turn one day.

Unless we act for the benefit of our brother as well as ourself we too will be forgotten when that time comes, and it doesn’t much matter what colour we are.

It is we who need to ask ourselves the questions, we who need to come up with the answers, we who need to let the Police, the Coroner or whoever know what it is we expect of the offices and institutions we setup.

It is we who need to make the whole system we (some now departed, naturaaly and unnaturally) adopted without thinking at the time actually work.

Lets start with some simple questions.

Can anyone point to the relevant section(s) of our laws that define how a Coroner’s inquest is to be done?

Can anyone point to the relevant section(s) of our laws which define who investigates the Police and how it is done?

Are these laws specific to the Police and the Coroner available on the internet?

Is there someone who can find them and extract the sections which says what it is we can expect?

    etc, etc, etc….

Don’t let us wait and see.

Let our voices be raised to ensure due process is followed but first, let us find out what that due process is.

We don’t need to be lawyers to read law.

  25. Well said John.
I got your back my brother

  26. I too will like to know how the Coroners inquest is done. I too will like to know why the mothers request was denied.

Many persons will turn a blind eye and label him just another “Rasta criminal”. What about if in the future one of our children, nephew, relative decides to adopt the Rastafari faith will we like for them to be labelled a “criminal” just because he/she has dreadlocks and adopted the Rastafari faith.

Many persons who have locks you know the salon pretty locks be aware you are also at risk.

The truth must be told and I do not trust the police investigation the police have betrayed my trust.

This is a crime against humanity. A life has been taken, a young man who had a significant contribution to make to Barbados and I will go as far to say to the world has been taken away and everything about it seems suspicious.

    Thank you!!
I apologise for my error —but a person with locks associated with any beach is in danger and it does not matter if they are ‘salon locks’ or ‘bongo nattys’. There are certain beaches in Barbados that are always named when ‘drugs’ are seized. No one with locks is safe there if the police show up.
    Rasta+Beach= drugs landing

  28. i was just wondering, at what time of the day did this take place

  29. Justice!!!

  30. re Remember what happened when Bob Woolmer died unnaturally in his hotel room in Jamaica?

Bob Woolmer was eventually shown to have died NATURALLY— just as I suspected from the very beginning when I heard that he was a diabetic, and following the stress of the shock defeat by his team.

  31. 5:30 p.m according to the police press release. Sunset was at 6:28 p.m. on that date. So 1 hour BEFORE sunset
